This is the first comprehensive translation of the expanded French version of E.F.F. Chladni's Traité d'Acoustique, using Chladni's 1802 Die Akustik for reference and clarification. Blast: Vorticism 1914-1918.Paul Edwards & Jane Beckett - 2000 - Ashgate Publishing.
An English adaptation of the publication that accompanied the exhibition BLAST: Vortizismus--Die erste Aventgarde in England 1914-1918 in Hanover and Munich in 1996-97. British and German art historians examine the only British avant-garde movement to make an original contribution to European Modernism. Initiated in 1914 by Wyndham Lewis and christened by Ezra Pound, it was a sustained act of aggression against the moribund and moderate Victorianism that they saw as stifling the artistic energies of the new generation. In addition (...)

Walter Benjamin, religion, and aesthetics: rethinking religion through the arts.S. Brent Plate - 2005 - New York: Routledge.
Walter Benjamin, Religion, and Aesthetics is an innovative attempt to reconceive the key concepts of religious studies through a reading with, and against, Walter Benjamin. Brent Plate deftly sifts through Benjamin's voluminous writings showing how his concepts of art, allegory, and experience undo traditional religious concepts such as myth, symbol, memory, narrative, creation, and redemption. Recasting religion as religious practice, as process and movement, Plate locates a Benjaminian materialist aesthetics, what the author calls an "allegorical aesthetics," in order to uncover (...)

There Is No Theory of Everything: A Physics Perspective on Emergence.Lars Q. English - 2017 - Cham: Imprint: Springer.
The main purpose of this book is to introduce a broader audience to emergence by illustrating how discoveries in the physical sciences have informed the ways we think about it. In a nutshell, emergence asserts that non-reductive behavior arises at higher levels of organization and complexity. As physicist Philip Anderson put it, "more is different." Along the text's conversational tour through the terrain of quantum physics, phase transitions, nonlinear and statistical physics, networks and complexity, the author highlights the various (...)

Imaging Otherness: Filmic Visions of Living Together.S. Brent Plate & David Jasper (eds.) - 1999 - Oup Usa.
Imaging Otherness explores relationships between film and religion, aesthetics and ethics. The volume examines these relationships by viewing how otherness is imaged in film and how otherness alternately might be imagined. Drawing from a variety of films from differing religious perspectives -- including Chan Buddhism, Hinduism, Native American religions, Christianity, and Judaism -- the essays gathered in this volume examine the particular problems of 'living together' when faced with the tensions brought out through the otherness of differing sexualities, ethnicities, genders, (...)

Wittgenstein’s ‘ethnological approach’ to the philosophy of mathematics, in particular his discussion of calculation as an experiment and the limits of empiricism in mathematics, is presented against three interrelated backdrops: (1) James’ critique of Spencer’s evolutionary empiricism, specifically regarding necessary truths; (2) the Cambridge Anthropological Expedition to Torres Straits, led by Haddon and Rivers, whose Reports implicitly confuted Spencer; and (3) the subsequent work of Malinowski, especially his supplement to Ogden and Richards’ The Meaning of Meaning, a book sent (...)

Each epigram is followed by an apparatus criticus, an English translation, and a detailed commentary on linguistic, literary, and historical matters, adducing extensive evidence from (...)

Discontinuity in Learning: Dewey, Herbart and Education as transformation.Andrea R. English - 2013 - New York: Cambridge University Press.
In this groundbreaking book, Andrea R. English challenges common assumptions by arguing that discontinuous experiences, such as uncertainty and struggle, are essential to the learning process. To make this argument, Dr. English draws from the works of two seminal thinkers in philosophy of education - nineteenth-century German philosopher J. F. Herbart and American Pragmatist John Dewey. English's analysis considers Herbart's influence on Dewey, inverting the accepted interpretation of Dewey's thought as a dramatic break from modern European (...)

Literary studies and human flourishing.James F. English & Heather Love (eds.) - 2023 - New York: Oxford University Press.
Of all humanities disciplines, none is more resistant to the program of positive psychology or more hostile to the prevailing discourse of human flourishing than literary studies. The approach taken in this volume of essays is neither to gloss over that antagonism nor to launch a series of blasts against positive psychology and the happiness industry. Rather, the essays are attempts to reflect on how the kinds of literary research the contributors themselves are doing, the kinds of work to which (...)

An Analysis of Power in the Writing of Mechtild of Magdeburg.Leona M. English - 2006 - Feminist Theology 14 (2):189-204.
This essay provides an analysis of the theme of power in the text of the mystic Mechtild of Magdeburg, The Flowing Light of the Godhead. The author examines how this mediaeval woman learned to be an adroit shaper of power in her own life; how she understood the effects of corrupt clergy who persecuted her; how she directly faced corrupt power figures; how she used the rhetoric of femininity to subvert the more obvious power structures; how she gathered male friends (...)

Between 1934 and 1937 Maurice Blondel, the French Roman Catholic philosopher best known for his 1893 work, Action, published a trilogy of writings. Out of these writings came a theological ontology of tremendous force, creativity, and coherence. The purpose of the present dissertation is to reassess the viability of Blondel's ontology for contemporary theology. The retrieval begins with John Milbank's 1990 investigation of Blondel's early philosophy. While Milbank focuses on the strengths of Blondel, he also highlights some critical weaknesses. The (...)

Reply to Avi I. Mintz’s Review of Discontinuity in Learning: Dewey, Herbart, and Education as Transformation.Andrea R. English - 2014 - Studies in Philosophy and Education 33 (4):459-462.
Current educational policy is leading teachers, schools, and society at large to fixate on the outcomes of learning. In Discontinuity in Learning, I shift the focus to the process of learning and ask, How is it that we come to new ideas, find cooperative ways of interacting with others, or take on a different perspective? Or, more simply, How do we learn? I believe that until we answer this question, we cannot begin to educate another person. My aim in the (...) is to reveal how our experience of discontinuity is inextricably connected to our ability to question our taken-for-granted knowledge and beliefs, and our ability to critically examine the norms and values of society. Discontinuity points to those moments when we are interrupted by something unexpected, such that our ideas or ways of acting become untenable and need revision. Encounters with the unexpected point to the contingency of human experience; they indicate a blind spot and remind us we are fallible. Such encounters are t. (shrink)

What We Say, Who We Are: Leopold Senghor, Zora Neale Hurston, and the Philosophy of Language.Parker English - 2009 - Lexington Books.
In What We Say, Who We Are, Parker English explores the commonality between Leopold Senghor's concept of "negritude" and Zora Neale Hurston's view of "Negro expression." For English, these two concepts emphasize that a person's view of herself is above all dictated by the way in which she talks about herself. Focusing on "performism," English discusses the presentational/representational and externalistic/internalistic facets of this concept and how they relate to the ideas of Senghor and Hurston.
