Dyadic semantics is a sort of non-truth-functional bivalued semantics introduced in Caleiro et al. Logica Universalis, Birkhäuser, Basel, pp 169–189, 2005). Here we introduce an algorithmic procedure for constructing conservative translations of logics characterised by dyadic semantics into classical propositional logic. The procedure uses fresh propositional variables, which we call hidden variables, to represent the indeterminism of dyadic semantics. An alternative algorithmic procedure for constructing conservative translations of any finite-valued logic into classical logic is also introduced. In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:Epigram into Lyric: Francis Bacon Translates from the Greek Anthology GORDON BRADEN If sir francis bacon did not exactly invent modern science and technology, he did predict it, with remarkable accuracy. The unfinished project of which the writings of his later years were to be component parts is a reformation of the life of the human mind from the ground up—“a complete Instauration of the arts and sciences and (...) all the learning of mankind, raised upon proper foundations ”1—and the most (arguably the only) successful such plan ever drafted. It foresaw both the previously unimaginable worldly triumph of the human race over nature in the centuries that followed and the intellectual means by which that triumph was to be achieved. He also wrote poetry. It is no surprise that someone of his time and place and station should have done so, and its existence is not in itself remarkable. Not much of it has survived, and we have no particular reason to think there was more; and, despite the extensive scholarly and critical scrutiny that Bacon’s work has received, very little attention has been given to this part of it. Still, one poem has achieved something of an afterlife and is worth attention, especially alongside the triumphalism of Bacon’s Magna Instauratio. It concerns hopelessness. Serious attention has been given to Bacon’s remarks on literature and the imagination, including his proposal, amid all his other plans, for what he calls “literary history” (historia literarum).2 But his poems are a different matter. They can be found in the great 19th-century edition of Bacon’s collected works, tucked in between his Prayers and his Christian Paradoxes.3 Most of the poems are from a small volume of psalm translations published under his own name the year before arion 27.1 spring/summer 2019 his death; these are now available in one of the published volumes of the new Oxford edition of Bacon’s works.4 There is also 12-line poem in hexameter couplets that begins sounding like a translation of Horace’s Integer vitae but goes on to be a fairly straightforward completion of its opening thesis and never gets around to sweetly laughing, sweetly speaking Lalage; a manuscript in the British Library attributes it to Bacon, though it is also printed in two of Thomas Campion’s books of airs as if it were one of his.5 My own interest is in the one remaining poem, a 32-line translation of a 10-line poem from the Greek Anthology (9.359 in the Palatine Anthology, though known in Bacon’s time from the Planudean). It first appears in print in 1626, anonymously, as “Certaine verses concerning the present estate of Man,” appended with other “characters, and many other witty conceits ” to an edition of Thomas Overbury’s poem “A Wife.”6 Three years later the classical scholar Thomas Farnaby prints it with an ascription to Bacon in a selection of poems from the Greek Anthology, along with the original text of the Greek poem, a Latin translation of it, and the editor’s facing translation of Bacon’s poem back into Greek.7 Bacon’s poem can also be found, both complete and in fragmentary form, in quite a few manuscripts, which are being collated for the first time for The Oxford Francis Bacon, though the editors have not yet decided where to put it. Isolated citations and quotations of the poem occur over the next several centuries; Francis Turner Palgrave includes it in his much-reprinted Golden Treasury, with the title “Life.”8 But there has been little discussion of the poem. It is the subject of an excellent scholarly article by Herbert Grierson, but that was over a hundred years ago.9 Paul Fussell has some sharp observations on Bacon’s use of his stanza form, but they fit onto a single page.10 Other comment is mostly incidental. I want to gather and slightly enhance what has been learned or said about the poem, and explore why it has snagged my interest. A chief aim of this paper is to provide common ground for discussion of outstanding issues between defenders of classical logic and contemporary advocates of intuitionistic logic. In this spirit, I draw upon (and reconstruct) here the relationship between dialogue and evidence as emphasized in German constructivist authors. My approach depends upon developments in the methodology of empirical linguistics. As a preliminary to saying how one might decide between these two versions of logic (this issue is most closely approached in (...) Section V. discussing the constructivist approach), it is well worth the effort to look closely at how logic is (or might be) learned and at questions concerning logic in translation, i.e., the question of how we might detect the variety of logic actually employed in a given speech community. Each selection is about fifty pages in length, including the introductory remarks, which are typically very concise. The translation is followed by a short and briefly annotated bibliography that is divided into two parts: other translations and secondary works. The volume was originally published in 2001 by Seven Bridges Press, but it is now reprinted by Hackett Publishing.A usual worry one has when using an anthology of translations in which works are not rendered in their entirety is that principal passages might be omitted. It cannot always be the case that one's favorite passages will make it into a condensation of a work, but one does expect to find the major component passages available to the reader. With regard to this collection, I must say that while there can be no guarantee that these translators have included everything that everyone will think is important, nonetheless, as I will try to show in what follows, the selections are very well chosen and ably translated.The first selection is taken from the Analects. Edward Slingerland is the translator. Subsequent to his work in this readings collection, Slingerland has recently published an entire translation of the Analects including a robust collection of the commentarial tradition on that work. What few differences I have been able to notice between this version and the publication of the entire translation seem to be inconsequential. In this readings collection, all twenty chapters of the Analects are represented. [End Page 687] Chapter 4, widely regarded as the centerpiece of sayings reliably traceable to Kongzi himself, is translated in its entirety.Slingerland uses several conventions for dealing with the concepts regarded as fundamental to a Confucian lexicon. For example, he leaves ren untranslated. And a few scholars will be troubled by his decision to translate junzi as "gentleman." As an aid to the reader, he often uses pinyin and gives the Chinese character for other strategic terms, but he does not allow the translation to be cluttered with too many characters. He seems to stay always consistent with the overall intention of the editors of the collection to use characters only as an aid to the beginning student and nonspecialist. What one needs to introduce key Confucian concepts and Kongzi's way of dealing with his students is available here.Philip J. Ivanhoe's translation of Mozi follows next. What struck me in the beginning was Ivanhoe's fine introductory essay on Master Mo, and I think it will be of benefit to students and nonspecialists alike. This is especially true if one is considering this anthology for a first course in Chinese philosophy or comparative philosophy. Some scholars will think that Ivanhoe's translation of jian ai as "impartial care" instead of "universal love" is not adequately explained in the introductory remarks and even somewhat problematic. But this could provide a point of conversation in the study of the text.Ivanhoe bases his translation on his own selections from the various versions available of the central chapters of the Mozi but the result is relatively uncontroversial. He includes the important eighth and eleventh chapters, concerned with worthy ministers, and chapter 16 on jian ai. The inclusion of Mozi's remarks on funerals, ghosts, and spirits demonstrates Ivanhoe's claim that Mozi is the first philosopher of China to exhibit a sustained interest in argumentation and debate. Ich habe vor allem die Tatkraft und die Opferwilligkeit zu ruhmen, die der Verlag an diese Sache gesetzt hat und zwar unter den schwierigsten Umstanden, welche selbst die dankenswerterweise gewahrte Unterstutzung der deutschen Notgemeinschaft alsbald aulserlidi entwerteten. Freilidx blieb (...) davon der innere Wert unberuhrt, der in der Anerkennung von Borinskis Verdienst durch eine so berufene Seite zu erblicken war. In wenig Teilen der Sammlung kommt deren Grundgedanke so stark zum Ausdrudc wie in den zwei Banden Borinskis, ein Gedanke, dessen Fruchtbarkeit sich auch darin zeigt, dal Zneuerdings im Inland wie im Aus land gleichartige Unternehmen hervorgetreten sind. Gewil 3 wird es andrerseits immer deutlicher, da Bdie Antike keineswegs nur ein geschichtli(hes Element unserer Kultur ist, das blol 3 noch wegen des genetisdien Verstandnisses eben dieser Kultur unentbehrlich ware, und zwar gerade auch mit den Erscheinungen ihres Nad1lebens: vielmehr beginnt sie nunmehr wiederum unmittelbare Lebenskrafte zu entfalten. (Was zu ubersehen wohl nur dem erstaunlichen Bildungsmangel moglich ist, mit dem gewisse radikale und fur ihre wichtige Aufgabe vollig unqualifizierte Schulverwaltungen das Andenken ihrer eigenen Fuhrer Lassalle und Pernerstorffer geschandet haben. Der Grund, warum sie zu einem selbstandigen Werke angeschwollen ist, liegt darin, weil ich bei genauerem Studium des Philosophen fand, man habe das naturphilosophische Element in den Schriften Kants bisher bei weitem unterschatzt und insbesondere seinen Bemuhungen um eine dynamische Theorie der Materie lange nicht diejenige Bedeutung zugeschrieben, die ihnen sowohl (...) in Hinsicht auf die Richtung, welche die kantische Gedankenentwickelung genommen hat, wie fur die eigentumliche Ausbildung dieser Gedanken im Einzelnen thatsachlich beizumessen ist. Indem ich versuchte, von Seiten der Logik aus einen Zugang zu den Grundbegriffen der Mathematik zu gewinnen, erwies es sich vor allem als notwendig, die B e g r i f f s f u n k t i 0 n e'lhsimaher zu zergliedern und auf ihre Voraussetzungen zuruckzufuhren. Hier (...) aber machte sich alsbald eine eigentumliche Schwierigkeit geltend: die her kommliche logische Lehre vom Begriff zeigte sich in ihren bekannten Hauptzugen als unzureichend, die Probleme, zu denen die Prinzipienlehre der Mathematik hinfuhrt, auch nur vollstandig z u b e z e i c h n e n. Die exakte Wissenschaft war hier, wie sich mir immer deutlicher zu ergeben schien, zu Fragen gelangt, fur welche die Formensprache der tradi tionellen Logik kein genaues Correlat besitzt. Der sachliche Gehalt der mathematischen Erkenntnisse wies auf eine Grund form des Begriffs zuruck, die in der Logik selbst nicht zu klarer Bezeichnung und Anerkennung gekommen war. A world that never is but always to be cannot remain stable enough for a single moment to allow even of description, let alone of definition and interpretation; and a statement approximately true. Today may be anything but true tomorrow. Metaphysics (...) and Phi 1050phy, in these circumstances, are not so much as even guesses at truth, since the truth about a process of Becoming, if it be no more than that, can only be known when the process is complete, that is to say, when all life has ceased. They are, at best, a kind of meteorological prediction, but in a field vastly more complex than that of weather and, in consequence, at a vastly greater disadvantage than common mete orology. If, as is too. Generally assumed by modern science, what we call life is only Becoming, there is small wonder that Metaphysics and Philosophy proper should be regarded as fancies unworthy of serious attention. Trotz des bevorstehenden Todes eines ihm teuern Mannes erfullte doch nicht das Gefuhl des Mitleides seine Brust; denn gluckselig erschien ihm der (...) Mann hinsicht lich seines Verhaltens sowohl als seiner Reden. Furchtlos und edel ging er in den Tod, so dass I'hadou der Gedanke vor die Seele trat, dass Sokrates auch in den Harles nicht ohne gottliche Schickung hinabsteige, und dass es ihm auch dort wohl ergehen werde, wenn sonst je einem. Aber auch Freude zog nicht bei ihm ein, wahrend sie doch mit philosophischen Fragen beschaftigt waren; sondern es war ein geradezu seltsa mer Zustand, in welchem er sich befand, gemischt aus Freude und aus Schmerz zugleich. Es druckt vollkommen die Stimmung aus, in welcher er dieselben schrieb und sehr oft seine Vortrage hielt. Wie tief ihm selbst auch seine Zeit ans Herz gewachsen war und wie eng er ihre Note und ihre Hoffnungen, ihre Wunsche und Bedurfnisse mit seinem innersten Ringen und Streben verband - er wusste es doch sehr genau, da Ber mit vielen seiner heiligsten Gedanken und Uberzeugungen der Zeit fremd blieb und daB der Same, den er ausstreute, nicht Felder bestellen konnte, sondern nur da und dort zu neuer Blute und Frucht trieb. Aber so klar er das uberschaute und erkannte, so klar und selbstsicher, so voll Zuversicht schaute er auch in die Zukunft. Es gab fur seinen Geist keinen Zweifel daruber, dass das, was er der Welt zu sagen hatte, einmal auch von den Vielen begehrt werden wurde und dass er es sagen musse, um sein Teil an der fortschreitenden Entwicklung der Menschheit zu leisten. Es mochte heutzutage ganz besonders wichtig sein, die bejahende Antwort auf jene Frage neuerdings sicherzustellen. Ist ja nach den Irrfahrten der aprio ristischen und idealistischen deutschen Spekulation und ihrem Umschlag in den Empirismus und Materialismus eine Art von Verzwei ung an (...) der Philosophie bei uns eingetreten. Nun wurde es aber gewiss nicht zur Ermuthigung der forschenden Geister gereichen, wenn man die so vielfach vorgebrachte Behauptung als wahr einraumen musste, dass auch Aristoteles, der traditionell als Furst der Philosophen gefeiert wird, es im theologi schen Theil seines Systems klaglich versehen hatte. Moge man noch so sehr die ubrigen Theile seiner Philo sophie mit Lob erheben, das gleichzeitige Eingestandniss, dass indessen seine Theologie nicht auf derselben Hohe stehe, muss um so entmuthigender Wirken. Denn gerade in diesem Zusammenhangs gewinnt die Besorgniss neue Nahrung, dass das Dasein Gottes an sich nicht beweisbar ist, und dass Aristoteles eben darum, nicht aber wegen anderer Grunde, die ausser der Sache lagen, es zu keiner genugenden Gotteslehre brachte.
