Did early modern European states make themselves sacred? The historian Paolo Prodi insisted that they did, whereas for the philosopher Giorgio Agamben sacred and secular power were so indistinguishable that the question was moot. This group of articles seeks to explain and explore the approaches of these two accomplished Italian scholars to the problem of early modern sacralisation. This introduction reviews the context in which Prodi and Agamben worked, sketches brief biographies, and describes the arguments that they advanced which (...) are most relevant to early modern history. Their work emerged from the debate on secularisation in the German-speaking lands, the confessionalisation thesis as it was advanced by German historians of Reformation, Counter-Reformation, and Catholic Reform, and twentieth-century Catholic thought about the relationship between religion and totalitarian states. Both Prodi and Agamben belonged to traditions that sat at an angle to the liberalism that underpins historical and philosophical thought in the English-speaking world. (shrink)

Urban cities in the sub-Saharan Africa have witnessed unprecedented transformation because of the proliferation of religious orders within the social landscape. From Nigeria, Ghana and Cameroon to Uganda, religious practitioners are actively involved in the spatial transformation through the construction of sacred spaces or prayer camps. The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) typifies one of the several examples of African Pentecostal denominations with transnational status in 200 countries across the world with the hub of its international office situated at (...) the Redemption Camp, Mowe, Nigeria. The sacralisation of forest areas spanning 1600 ha of land has redefined religious institutions such as RCCG as perhaps one of the largest owners of private estate in Nigeria. However, there seems to be an intentional replication of the Redemption Camp, Mowe across Nigeria as well as across the Atlantic as part of the RCCG missionary enterprise. This study aims to utilise the ethnography of the Redemption Camps in Nigeria and Floyd, Texas, United States. The theoretical framework of social worlds is employed to examine the dynamics of religious creativity, innovations, contextual challenges of place-making involved in creating Redemption Camps across borders by the leadership of RCCG through the appropriation of religious capital of its community of sentiments. ABSTRACTDespite their differences in age, professional career and political background, Milošević and Putin share similar views on one of the main consequences of the disintegration of Yugoslavia and the USSR: the involuntary dispersal of Serbs and Russians into different foreign states. This is a study of the segments of Milošević’s and Putin’s speeches referring to Kosovo and to Crimea respectively. The study analyses their rhetorical devices and thematic content, using the analytical framework and instruments for the analysis of nationalist discourses (...) developed by the Vienna School of Critical Discourse Analysis. The speeches, it is argued here, share a topos of sacralisation of the land based on the ancestors’ holy or glorious deeds which proclaims the land to be sacred to the chosen nation. This creates a ‘national entitlement’ to the land in a depoliticised and highly personalised setting. (shrink)

This paper forms part of the feminist critique of the regulatory consequences of biomedicine’s systematic exclusion of the role of women’s bodies in the development of reprogenetic technologies. I suggest that strategic use of notions of the sacred to decontextualise and delimit disagreement fosters this marginalisation. Here conceptions of the sacred and sacralisation afford a means by which pragmatic consensus over regulation may be achieved, through the deployment of a bricolage of dense images associated with cultural loyalties to solidify (...) support or exclude contradictory elements. Hence an explicit renegotiation of the symbolic order structuring salient debates is necessary to disrupt and enrich the entrenched and exclusionary dominant discourse over reprogenetic regulation. I draw upon previous analyses of strategic rhetoric associated with the regulation of infertility treatment and embryo research in the United Kingdom, the cultural anthropology of biomedicine and feminist ethnographies of reprogenetics to illustrate these claims. In this article, I would like to use the case of Rudolf Eucken to examine how the historiography of philosophy, and especially the interpretation of German Idealism, became a medium of national self-assurance. By referring to the philosophical classics of German Idealism, Eucken, at the end of the 19th century, develops a model of a publicly effective philosophy to which he ascribes the task of contributing to the recovery of unity and strength. My aim is to work out the social (...) background and the social function of this characterisation of the history of philosophy. The thesis I would like to develop is that Eucken, in reaction to his perception of social crises and the inner-scientific questioning of the role of philosophy, attempts to establish philosophy as a fundamental element of the historical discourse and practices of the new German nation state. This historical discourse, into which philosophy attempts to inscribe itself, can be interpreted, following Durkheim’s sociological reflections on religion, as an attempt to sacralise the nation. This reveals the social function of this form of philosophical historiography: it becomes the theology of the new German nation state. (shrink)

This article makes a contribution towards understanding the correlation between Úgwú (hill or mountain) and personal names among the Igbo people of Nigeria. Sacralisation of the natural environment which include hills or mountains is a belief that cuts across religions. Among the Igbo, the perceived sacred value placed on such natural environment prompted a series of socio-cultural changes. Personal names are usually drawn from deified entities such as the earth, sun, rivers, and so on. Studies on Igbo personal names (...) portrayed the environmental determinant for personal names in different Igbo-subcultures. However, the pattern of Nsukka-Igbo names, influenced specifically by Úgwú has hardly gotten any scholarly attention. This study, therefore, provided evidence that Úgwú is the single most environmental element that shaped the culture of naming among the Nsukka-Igbo people with its psycho-social and economic implications. Drawing from the theory of sacralisation, which stresses on placing religious values on objects, this article showed that the deified Úgwú environment influenced an unprecedented frequency and exclusive nature of Úgwú personal names in the study area. Documentary research, observation and interview methods were used to collect and analyse secondary, as well as primary data for this study. The article drew attention to the increasing influence of Úgwú on personal names in Nsukka-Igbo, and its effects which include the conservation of the environment occasioned by the deification of Úgwú. Contribution: This article shows that the deification of natural environment of Úgwú influenced the increasing frequency of Úgwú personal names and its associated variants among the Nsukka-Igbo people of Nigeria. After an introduction and views on inculturation, the focus shifts to ‘incarnation’ and ‘contextualisation’ in a broader sense, to also include the transformation and adaptation of the ‘sacred’ for the secular or political sphere. Practices of performing faith through texts and music within diverse liturgical, spiritual, cultural and political contexts in South Africa are discussed. Aspects taken into account are the possible influence of landscape or seasons on the expression of faith and the possible sacro-soundscapes that could come from different (...) contexts, such as the impact of the Karoo landscape on Khoisan descendants singing the sacred; performances in a contextualised music idiom, such as the Genevan Psalms in a Khoi music idiom; and celebrating the Church Year in different hemispheres. The discussion focuses also on contextualising within political contexts – that is, where political space is ‘sacralised’ through sacred songs and where sacred songs are given political meaning or changed for the political sphere. The article closes with the possibility of songs from Africa being sung in other countries and the meaning it could have, or could be given. It is argued that contextualisation from one context to another context of the sacred, or from a ‘secular’ to a sacred context, as well contextualising the sacred into the public or political sphere, could lead to contexts and spaces being changed, enrich the performance of the sacred, stimulate creativity, allow for new processes of attributing meaning, change values and motivate people, form new identities and thus also could lead to changed communities. An analytical review of the current situation of Christian philosophyin Russia is presented, aiming to explain, why so much expectedrenaissance of this philosophy in the post-soviet period did nottake place. Russian philosophy is shown to be structurally a synthesis of the Western conceptual framework and Eastern Christian discourse,the latter being, in turn, the synthesis of patristic and asceticdiscourse, including two basic paradigms, deification (theosis)and sacralisation, and having energy as its dominant category.The key role of ascetic experience in Eastern Christian (...) discourseis stressed. Three decades after their political independence, Black-African republics still search for stability. One-party states and military regimes have failed, but while both systems seem to retreat, presidentialism, the third branch of Negro-African governmentality, is likely to become a permanent phenomenon within post-colonial Central-African politics. Constitutionally rooted in presidential institutions, the single executive disposes of many instruments to establish presidentialist practices. Presidentialism itself refers to such historical precedents as the rule of traditional kings, colonial governors and nationalist leaders. lts legitimacy leans (...) on the need for comprehensible government, political stability, economic development and effective direction. Different kinds of presidentialism exist, but their classification depends on numerous criteria which are aften incompatible, and many characteristics of presidentialism can be indicated, of which the most important are patriarchy, wealth, charisma, sacralisation and historicity. Although presidentialism appears as an important aspect of the contemporary African political systems, few research has been done to explain the emergence and persistence of this phenomenon. This article reflects upon the notion of biopower deriving from Paul Rabinow’s work French DNA. This book undertakes an analysis of the relations between biotechnologies analysis of the relation between biotechnologies and bioethics in France informed by Foucault’s concept of biopower. We can retain two theses from this account: biotechnologies pluralise biopower and take it to the limit towards beings situated at the limits of life; bioethics fails to constitute a biopolitics because it is a discourse of sacralisation and (...) not one of resistance. De Léonard de Vinci à l’artiste surréaliste Max Ernst, sont analysées les relations entre ces temps vacants de diverses natures psychologiques et circonstancielles avec la capacité, qui leur succède, à saisir une sollicitation imprévue pour l’intégrer (...) à leur démarche artistique. Tournure stylistique et dramatique pour mieux faire ressortir l’instant fertile sérendipien? Rhétorique de l’ironie, qui retourne la durée morne en moment d’intense création? Repos nécessaire pour mieux aiguiser l’attention qui succède? Ou plongée dans l’inconscient riche d’images, qui souffle parfois des solutions époustouflantes de justesse? Ces moments vides, quelle qu’en soit la teneur, tiennent probablement un rôle plus soutenu qu’il n’y paraît dans la temporalité de la démarche sérendipienne chez nombre d’artistes. Aussi, même s’il n’est pas question ici de sacraliser leur activité, faut-il considérer leurs temps apparemment vides, comme une chance d’une possible sérendipité artistique. (shrink)

A partir d'un « stock d'axiomes de toute théologie », J.-Y. Lacoste inscrit à son cahier des charges plusieurs tâches. La première consiste à montrer que « ses » vérités ne sont pas celles de tout le monde. La seconde est celle d'une « précision conceptuelle » inscrite dans la distinction de l'expérience et du langage par et dans lequel elle se dit. Enfin, comme troisième tâche, il entend accomplir une « mise en perspective » ou « mise en critique (...) », celle des instruments conceptuels utilisés. De ce fait, devraient apparaître les grandes lignes d'un protocole d'accord entre instances , capable d'aider à éviter des ornières assez habituelles, que ce soit celle de la sacralisation du Vorzeit , ou celle du flirt perpétuel avec la nouveauté chérie comme telle. Ces tâches étant évidemment solidaires, il n'est pas question pour J.-Y. Lacoste de les séparer dans son projet.Beginning with a « stock of axioms from all theology », J-Y Lacoste has a number of items on his list. The first is to show that « these » basic truths are not held by everyone. The second is that of a « conceptual precision » written in the distinction of experience and language by and in which it speaks . Finally, as a third task, he wants to accomplish a « putting in perspective » or « placing in review » of the conceptual tools used. From this there should appear the main lines of an agreement of protocol between matters capable of helping to avoid the fairly habitual ruts, whether it be that of the sacralization of the Vorzeit or that of the unending flirting with the darling novelity as such. Pressed by the impossible claim of giving themselves “authentically” and, at the same time, getting out of the way to (...) the construction of the “historiographical truth”, called into question in the manners and contents of their repeating the same story, the witness has become a paradoxical character. But they are also capable, in a beneficial reversal, of showing us something concerning our own rhetoric and making us think upon respect as a political category: what is it, in fact, that produces a society incapable of respecting the witnesses of its own extreme end? La dissolution de cette sacralisation conduit à une problématique de la laïcité opposant aux religions du pouvoir, les effets impolitiques des religions.

The aim of this paper is to shed light on the changes in perceiving the sacred which have appeared in the history of pilgrimage. These are linked with different theological approaches to space and subsequent periods of desacralisation, secularization and re-sacralisation. Relying on a modern theology of pilgrimage and research into the philosophy of religion by M. Eliade the paper offers a new interpretation of the message of the Camino de Santiago which overcomes previous reductionisms based on seeing the (...) sacred solely in the destination (the shrine). The relationship with the Camino and the content of pilgrim blessings indicate the role of experiencing order, beauty and these virtues which shape the relational order (corresponding with the virtue of _religio_). The effort of pilgrims is linked to this, however, it is no longer described in terms of ‘sacrifice’ although it is related to the same content which is perceived in a new post-secular cultural context. This article focuses on the role that distorted Christian theology played in the construction of the racial ideologies of Nazism and Apartheid. The central theoretical argument is that these theologies were instrumental in sacralising the history of a specific group by creating origin myths, by idolising the ingroup, defining the outgroup, by providing racist ideologies with rituals and symbols and by creating final utopian solutions. The theological doctrines that were used are characterised by certain common features, such as a collectivist (...) anthropology, the identification of the church with an ethnic group, the view of history as a source of revelation, and the appropriation of myths. The article concludes with the remark that the modern global environment is particularly vulnerable to racism. It is therefore important for Christianity to clearly identify the common characteristics of pseudo-racist theology and to educate its adherents on the difference between authentic theology and pseudo-theology, so that they will not fall prey to destructive forms of religion that encourage racism. Dans les sociétés modernes, le respect de l'autonomie est souvent considéré comme la voie royale menant à la reconnaissance de la valeur intrinsèque des personnes. Or, la philosophe américaine Sarah Conly refuse d'emprunter la voie de la sacralisation de l'autonomie. Puisant aux sources de la philosophie, de l'économie comportementale et de la psychologie sociale, elle montre plutôt le caractère irréfléchi de nos décisions et soutient en conséquence que certains de nos choix, présumés autonomes, sont en grande partie nuisibles à (...) l'atteinte de nos propres buts fondamentaux : être en santé, libre et heureux. Nous sommes des êtres rationnels, mais le sommes-nous vraiment dans notre vie de tous les jours? Croyons-nous vraiment être capables de toujours prendre les bonnes décisions? Pour Sarah Conly, dans de nombreux cas - sécurité routière, saine alimentation, retraite -, nos aspirations seraient mieux réalisées si l'Etat nous empêchait d'agir en fonction de nos seules intuitions ou convictions premières. Tel est le sens du paternalisme coercitif, dont l'auteure entend montrer les bienfaits. Une telle prise de position remet largement en question les vues habituelles sur la moralité, la démocratie ou la frontière séparant le public et le privé. (shrink)

A relire les Grecs, generation apres generation, tous a des degres divers, Romains, Juifs, Chretiens, Musulmans, etc., s'inoculerent et se transmirent les uns les autres ce germe critique qui, selon les differents sols et les differentes periodes historiques, epousa des formes variees. Le present essai propose donc une relecture du monde moderne fondee sur une reinterpretation de l'input antique grec, une analyse qui tient compte de la nouvelle humanite, critique et reflechie, decouverte en Grece, et qui prend donc ses distances vis-a-vis des approches proposees par des auteurs comme H. Blumenberg (la Modernite releve d'une auto-affirmation absolument originale, d'une curiosite theoretique sans precedent dans l'histoire), M. Gauchet (le desenchantement du monde est un phenomene essentiellement moderne, la democratie d'aujourd'hui tout autre chose que la democratie antique), et R. Brague (l'Occident tient davantage de la Rome christianisee et hellenisee que d'Athenes). A partir de l'examen de cas concrets, tels que l'idee de creativite artistique dans l'Antiquite, l'agnosticisme ou l'atheisme, la satire sociale tous azimuts d'un Lucien de Samosate, on peut constater que la culture contemporaine n'est pas essentiellement differente mais reprend bien plutot le fil d'interrogations et d'audaces anciennes. Le monde moderne a rompu avec certains aspects de sa tradition, mais il n'a pas rompu avec son passe, celui plus ancien, qu'il redecouvre de maniere plus libre aujourd'hui. Le but de l'ouvrage n'est d'ailleurs aucunement de sacraliser l'hellenisme, mais de montrer que le potentiel critique, inscrit dans la dynamique meme de cette culture, peut nous aider a mieux faconner la societe ouverte de demain. How to theorise religion in International Relations (IR)? Does the concept of post-secularity advance the debate on religion beyond the ‘return of religion’ and the crisis of secular reason? This article argues that the post-secular remains trapped in the logic of secularism. First, a new account is provided of the ‘secularist bias’ that characterises mainstream IR theory: (a) defining religion in either essentialist or epiphenomenal terms; (b) positing a series of ‘antagonistic binary opposites’ such as the secular versus the religious; (...) (c) de-sacralising and re-sacralising the public square. The article then analyses post-secularity, showing that it subordinates faith under secular reason and sacralises the ‘other’ by elevating difference into the sole transcendental term. Theorists of the post-secular such as Jürgen Habermas or William Connolly also equate secular modernity with metaphysical universalism, which they seek to replace with post-metaphysical pluralism. In contrast, the alternative that this article outlines is an international theory that develops the Christian realism of the English School in the direction of a metaphysical-political realism. Such a realism binds together reason with faith and envisions a ‘corporate’ association of peoples and nations beyond the secularist settlement of Westphalia that is centred on national states and transnational markets. By linking immanent values to transcendent principles, this approach can rethink religion in international affairs and help revive grand theory in IR. (shrink)

Certains contre-révolutionnaires ont combattu la laïcité comme une contre-religion à laquelle il fallait opposer une théologie politique de l’autorité. Cette position impossible signale une tension réelle : dès la « religion laïque » de Renouvier et Buisson, la laïcité a été exposée à la tentation de sa propre sacralisation. Une réflexion théologico-politique pourrait servir ici à appuyer l’effort laïque pour échapper à toute « religion civile ».

À l'ère du fondamentalisme islamiste et du jihâdisme international, fondés notamment sur des postulats anhistoriques sacralisés, l'œuvre de Mohammed Arkoun, qui postule une approche critique et historicisée de la pensée islamique, est d'une importance majeure tant au niveau académique que politique. Tout au long de sa carrière universitaire, en qualité d'intellectuel humaniste engagé, il s'attelle à la déconstruction des axiomes médiévaux divinisés de l'orthodoxie sunnite dominante auxquels se réfèrent les acteurs islamistes, dans une optique idéologique totalisante, tout en défendant l'idée (...) d'une reconstruction de la pensée islamique dans une perspective moderne et humaniste. Ce livre met en lumière les apports conceptuels, théoriques et programmatiques de son œuvre dans le traitement de sujets nodaux relatifs au statut théologique du Coran, à la violence sacralisée (jihâd), à ladite loi divine (charîʻa), au califat et à l'enjeu humaniste du vivre-ensemble, à l'échelle locale et mondiale, dans une perspective soustendue par le concept de 'ruptures épistémologiques' qui permettrait, selon Mohammed Arkoun dans une optique religieuse, le passage de l'exercice de la pensée islamique d'une épistémè médiévale à une épistémè moderne. Les écrits d’Étienne Souriau sont traditionnellement associés à l’esthétique sans qu’on sache nécessairement quelle orientation celui-ci entendait précisément lui donner, ni quelle inscription il lui réservait au sein de la philosophie. La présente étude tâchera de ressaisir les étapes de la constitution d’une discipline à l’intérieur de ce discours, discipline au départ circonscrite et assignée à une tâche spécifique, mais qui, à la faveur d’un élargissement de son objet – non plus la forme mais l’ art, défini comme processus instauratif (...) présent à tous les niveaux de l’existence comme son essence –, a fini par s’identifier à la philosophie tout entière, à son tour désignée comme art, à devenir ainsi philosophie première, cosmologie, mais aussi morale. L’esthétique, discipline incertaine, dont la légitimité, au début du xx e siècle, paraissait rien moins que justifiée, accéderait ainsi dans le système de Souriau à une forme de gloire épistémologique et cosmologique à la faveur d’une nouvelle forme de sacralisation de l’art. The Powers of the Sacred is an opportunity for Hans Joas to return to the dynamogenic character of religion highlighted by William James and Émile Durkheim, in order to propose a reflection on the process of sacralisation of values. The present contribution enters into a pragmatist dialogue with Joas’s proposals, based on investigations carried out in an evangelical context. The aim is to show how certain spiritual practices encouraged on the horizon of collective celebrations participate in the creation of (...) values configured by religious entrepreneurs anxious to capture the religious energy of the faithful for the benefit of conservative political mobilizations. These empirical cases shed new light on the notion of the sacred proposed by Joas, and allow us to identify certain methodological knots, notably in the relationship between Joasian concepts and the notions through which social actors confer meaning on their individual or collective experiences. Résumé En réponse à l’appel lancé en mai 2003 par Habermas et Derrida pour « une vision attrayante de l’Europe à venir », cet article identifie six points aveugles qui font du cosmopolitisme dominant une attitude tournée vers le passé (le recours à la notion de devoir moral, le fétichisme du droit, l’attachement à l’Etat-Nation, la problématique identitaire, un reste d’eurocentrisme et la référence à Kant). Il propose ensuite six retournements : du devoir à la puissance, du droit sacralisé à (...) la puissance du droit, du Super-Etat-Nation à la régulation globalisée, de l’identité héritée à l’invention imitative, de l’eurocentrisme à l’interaction des multitudes, et de Kant à Spinoza. Worldview Religious Studies brings the study of religion, spirituality, secularism, and other mixed attitudes of life under the overarching scheme of worldview studies. This book introduces and defines worldviews more generally before establishing a framework specific to religious studies. The drive for meaning-making is explored through ritual-symbolic activities, ideas of 'play', and the power of emotions to transform simple ideas into values and beliefs that frame identity and signpost destiny. Dans les fabliaux, la jeune fille est un personnage soumis à l'autorité parentale, sans épaisseur, muet et sédentaire, objet de fantasme. Dans les récits de miracles, au contraire, c'est un personnage très positif, qui manifeste une relative autonomie dans le processus miraculeux, sublimé et sacralisé en tant que vierge. Ces contrastes de perception tiennent au type de documentation utilisé. Ils reposent sur une série d'oppositions (autonomie (...) / dépendance, mutisme / parole pour Dieu, virginité / sensualité) qui rendent compte d'un regard de clerc sur l'adolescente très ambigu et de la nécessité, pour les hommes d'Eglise, de contrôler le corps de la jeune fille. Shi‘i Islam is often considered to be political per se because of its emergence historically as a movement with a strong position on authority and legitimacy in governance. This piece demonstrates how the politics of salvation in the tradition tie together one’s loyalty to the divine person of the Imam to one’s final destination, and how that relationship is complicated in the physical absence of the Imam. 'Beaucoup perçoivent, devant la progression de la possibilité pour l'individu d'affirmer sa singularité et sa volonté de bien-être, une progression de l'individualisme. Pour maintenir tant bien que mal un semblant de cohérence, ils sont alors obligés de minimiser, voire d'occulter, la progression de la solidarité dans le monde, aussi bien le développement des divers systèmes de protection sociale étatiques que le développement des aides interétatiques ou le développement des organisations non gouvernementales. Mais le concept d'individualisme ne décrit pas ce qui (...) effectivement se passe au niveau de l'individu, il ne fait que l'effleurer de son aile douloureuse et s'écraser contre la vitre du concept d'égoïsme. Il faut inventer un autre concept : ce sera l'individuité. Et alors tout devient plus cohérent. L'individuité, définie comme la désacralisation totale de tout groupe et la sacralisation à égalité de tout individu, est ce qui permet de rendre compte du fait que c'est justement parce que la civilisation se structure peu à peu autour de l'égo, que c'est justement parce qu'elle transfère peu à peu, des dieux aux individus, ses mouvements les plus centraux et ses perspectives les plus fondamentales, qu'elle fait alors croître sa capacité à générer de la solidarité et même de l'altruisme. Le regard humain, qui depuis toujours vacillait, à la fois se courbant vers le despotisme de sa terre et se perdant vers les mirages de l'au-delà, acquiert peu à peu la capacité d'enfin se stabiliser à hauteur d'humain, dans le regard de l'Autre. Vidant progressivement de leur substance les communautés identitaires au profit des individus qu'arbitrairement elles enclosent, déconstruisant progressivement les fausses transcendances au profit de l'autotranscendance de la conscience réflexive, faisant progressivement du Je le centre de l'univers, la civilisation se structure peu à peu autour du fait qu'il y a magnifiquement un nombre incommensurable de centres à l'univers, un par subjectivité. L'humanité n'avait toujours vécu qu'à l'ère des sacralités groupales, qu'à l'ère de la dialectique identitarisme-religion, et puis, d'abord par un frémissement il y a deux millénaires et demi, et se renforçant peu à peu au cours des siècles jusqu'à de nos jours entrer dans un vertige exponentiel, voilà qu'une nouvelle dynamique émerge qui renverse tout : l'individu s'émancipe. Une nouvelle ère anthropologique s'ouvre à nous, il fallait la nommer : l'ère de l'individuité sera, ici, peut-être ailleurs, son nom. Un nom est aussi un outil, il permettra de mieux conceptualiser ce changement, pour mieux l'accompagner, et pour l'accélérer. Car les forces réactionnaires sont là, puissantes, actives, qui le freinent. Le militarisme est l'archétype du vivre-ensemble tel que l'agençait l'ère des sacralités groupales, là où les individus ne sont que des fragments de groupes identitaires, d'insignifiantes munitions ne servant qu'à s'écraser, au mieux par terre, et le labour ainsi se fait, au pire contre celles des autres groupes identitaires, et la mort toujours triomphe : et ce monde affreux, bien qu'affreux, n'est pas facile à quitter, et le vivre-ensemble, bien que souffrant, ne se laisse pas facilement soigner, et le chemin sera alors encore long (peut-être même très long, mais peut-être pas tant que ça si l'on sait le penser) avant que chaque individu soit considéré comme un tout, avant que l'égalité ontologique remplace totalement les hiérarchies identitaires, avant que l'éthique du respect universel remplace totalement la morale sacrificielle, avant que l'humanité ait définitivement choisi entre l'individuité ou la guerre'."--Page 4 of cover. Heidegger’s brief remarks on the theme of love enable us to reconstruct a view of it as a powerful feeling that both requires and amplifies a truthful recognition of oneself. The emphasis this places on the significance of love for the self and of the self for love, along with the kairological temporality Heidegger associates with love, means the account ends up “both sacralising and marginalising the other” (Tömmel, 2019, 242). I will suggest that this problem arises because Heidegger’s account (...) elevates love’s disruptive possibilities at the expense of its capacity to generate a shared world of everyday experience, and that his account of world-time offers underutilized resources for addressing this issue. This, in turn, generates a picture that resonates in illuminating ways with both Yao’s (2020) model of gracious attentive love, and De Jaegher’s (2021) enactivist account of the relationship between loving and knowing. Robert Vosloo’s theological-ethical notion of just memory, derived from Paul Ricoeur, is used to critique President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s call to wounded Zimbabweans to let bygones be bygones. The question answered by the article is, in the light of Vosloo’s notion of just memory, what should Zimbabweans who have been wounded by Zimbabwe African National Union – Patriotic Front’s (ZANU-PF’s) violence do with their memories of violence? The article argues that, in cases of social injustice, remembrance, instead of forgetting, should be (...) used to confront the unjust context. The article describes the nature of ZANU-PF’s culture of violence, and how the party uses the notion of ‘forgive and forget’ to silence the memories of people who have been wounded. After discussing how forgetting sacralises ZANU-PF’s violent patriotic history, the article describes how, in contrast, remembrance confronts the culture of violence. The article closes by describing certain aspects of a theological ethic that fosters redemptive remembrance of past wounds. Contribution: The contribution of the article is providing a theological-ethical framework that can enable victims of state violence to use their painful memories to confront the culture of violence in Zimbabwe. Loin de se focaliser sur le débat esthétique, les diverses approches ont assigné le droit, l'histoire, la sociologie, l'économie et les sciences exactes, pour mieux soumettre cet "objet" à un véritable examen clinique. Cette question ne serait-elle plus d'actualité? Loin s'en faut! Entre cœur et raison, la sacralisation des œuvres d'art produit toujours autant de savoirs, de savoir-faire (...) et de savoirs sur le faire. Mettant en avant le patrimoine, restaurant les objets de l'art, les reconstituant, favorisant le tourisme culturel, exhumant le vrai, condamnant le faux : à sa mesure, le "chef-œuvre" dynamise encore et toujours les divers moments de l'art. This volume revisits the concepts of enchantment and sacralization in light of perspectives which challenge the modern notion that man (alone) is the measure of all things. As Bruno Latour has argued, the battle against superstition entailed shifting power away from God/the gods to humans, thereby disqualifying the agency of all the other objects in the world. Might enchantment and sacralization be understood in other ways than through this battle between almighty gods and almighty humans? Might enchantment be understood to (...) involve processes where power and control are not distributed so clearly and definitely?Like social constructionists, Latour emphasizes that things are constructed; yet, like many other new materialists, such as Jane Bennett, Manuel De Landa and Karen Barad, he emphasizes that this construction is not the result of projecting meaning onto a passive and meaningless world, but a matter of compositional achievements, whereby assemblages of actants co-compose each other and frame, enable and delimit one another's agency. This move recognizes the active and entangled participation of players beyond the humans versus God(s) framework that informed the modernist project. Understanding enchantment and sacralisation as compositionally and relationally constructed does not mean the same as understanding them as constructed by humans alone. What it means is one of the main questions posed in this book. In other words, if enchantment and sacralization are not understood (solely) in terms of projecting anthropocentric meaning onto mute objects, what are some promising alternative approaches - old and new - and what are their implications for how we understand modernity and for method and theory in the study of religion? Le statut des savoirs et des connaissances en sciences humaines et sociales, tel qu'il commençait à être élaboré par les précurseurs et les fondateurs de ce qu'il était convenu d'appeler la sociologie, à laquelle vint s'ajouter l'anthropologie, pose aujourd'hui problème tant au niveau des sacralisations maintenues qu'à celui des modernisations s'accomplissant et accomplies. À partir d'ouvrages inventoriés sur une longue période, principalement les trente dernières années, l'épistémologie des sciences sociales s'interroge sur elle-même, sur ce qu'elle produit : des traces d'objectivation, (...) mais aussi de réflexion. Cet ouvrage est destiné aux chercheurs et enseignants chercheurs, mais aussi à tous ceux, et ils seront de plus en plus nombreux, qui, à l'écart des parti-pris et des dogmatismes, tentent de tracer leur chemin à des légitimations sociales et politiques en train de se faire. Mais, dès maintenant, elles tracent le chemin contre des illégitimations et des illégitimités globales advenues, dont la toute puissance serait apparemment le gage de leur pérennité. (shrink)

Sacred Landscape and Visual Culture. The Paintings of the Lower Church of the Sacro Speco at Subiaco - The purpose of this article is to investigate the emergence of landscape in visual discourses. The subject of this research is the territory of Subiaco and - more specifically - the monastery of the Sacro Speco, built on the site of St Benedict’s hermitage. It is here, in the vast decorative cycle directed by Magister Conxolus at the end of the thirteenth century, (...) that the “sacred landscape” of Subiaco is bent by the monastic community to claim its possession. Benedict is always portrayed inside his Grotto - which becomes a veritable “attribute” of the saint - and the same discourse also includes the portrayal of Chelidonia, a Benedictine hermit nun who lived between the eleventh and twelfth centuries. Through the experiences of the two saints, the landscape becomes sacralised and acquires an identity value for the Benedictine community which lives there. In this context, the figures of Benedict and Chelidonia create a visual bridge to Francis and Clare, and the frescoes becomes a Benedictine response to the “Franciscan challenge”. (shrink)

In European culture the sacred and the secular have existed in a dialectical relationship. Prodi sees the fifteenth-century crisis of Christianity as opening up three paths that eroded this dualism and tended towards modernity: civic-republican religion, sacred monarchy, and the territorial churches. Important counter-forces, which sought to maintain dualism, included the Roman-Tridentine Compromise, and those forms of Radical Christianity which rejected confessionalisation outright. During the Eighteenth Century, all these phenomena tended to contribute to one of two tendencies: towards civic religion, (...) or towards political religion. The former preserved a distinction between conscience and law; the latter comprised a state religion which sought to perfect all of human nature. It was civic religion which become embodied in the early USA, alienating God from worldly power, but leaving him as the guarantor of agreements between humans. Back in Europe, Prodi tracks the relationship between the Catholic Church and the new national states. He then turns to the political religions of the Twentieth Century. Prodi concludes by emphasising that this dualism of sacred and secular power lay at the centre of Western modernity, and expresses his fears about the collapse of civic religion into political religion, especially in the USA. The article proposes a systematic reconstruction of Joas’ theory of the sacred. After having characterized the disciplinary profile of Joas, who is a specialist in social theory and historical sociology, and presenting his approach, which ties together pragmatism and hermeneutics, it will be seen how Joas’ theory of the sacred is rooted in his theory of the genesis of values. For Joas, this genesis is closely tied up with the experiences of self-formation and self-transcendence, which can be collective (Durkheim) as (...) well as individual (James). Joas qualifies them as experiences of the sacred, which are susceptible to religious articulation. Therefore, religion is a possibility for interpreting the sacred. This mode, however, may itself assume a variety of forms, not necessarily making recourse to the category of the transcendental, which represents the major discovery of what Karl Jaspers named the axial age – a central topic of Joas’ work for about 15 years. As an alternative to the Weberian notion of disenchantment, Joas develops his history of sacralization and desacralization on this ground. (shrink)
