This article is a tribute to the late Dr. W. Michael Hoffman's life and professional career (1943–2018), including his important contribution to the business ethics academic community, as well as to the practical world of business. Following a brief summary of Dr. Hoffman's professional achievements, several tributes are provided including from Professor Richard De George, columnist Gael O'Brien, and Professor Patricia Werhane. The tributes are followed by synopses of a small sample of Dr. Hoffman's many journal articles published in (...) several different business ethics journals spanning 35 years (1982–2017). Georgia State University College of Law Professor Emerita Charity Scott quoted these words from Albert Einstein in June of 2022 as she concluded a tribute to Professor Joseph (Jay) M. Healey, one of the founding lights of health law and health law teaching. She chose the quote because she thought the words and sentiment would resonate with Jay. I repeat it because Dr. Einstein’s words capture the essence and heart of Charity’s approach to teaching, pedagogy, and life. Much of this dedication and efforts never reach the limelight whilst the journal enjoys increasing visibility and impact, ranking currently seventh among 328 philosophy journals and featuring on the 94th percentile. We may attribute this achievement to the authors of PPP, but behind this success story, John has been the vital oxygen in the breathing and energy production of PPP.Our senior editors who have been working under John's leadership for some time, attest as follows in reversed alphabetical order: Michael Wong writes,I once wondered how a psychiatric ethicist like John operates as a journal chief editor? Does he always ask three questions for every submission? Could I publish it? Would I publish it? Should I publish it? In 2014, I inherited from Bill Fulford – the founding editor – the role of UK editor of what was, at the time, a dual UK-USA edited journal. 2014 was a bad year for me – my parents both died and I spent a term living in a dark cell in a castle in the University of Durham – and I leant very heavily on John's help, assisted by the very capable Linda Muncy. Editing an interdisciplinary journal seemed to me at the time an almost [End Page 93] impossible task. Balancing clinical, philosophical and relevant other reviews was difficult and time consuming. One paper – a very fine submission taking a theologically informed look at depression – had been in the review process seemingly forever though its author was very understanding of the delays. But John (and Linda) graciously and practically accommodated my apprenticeship. John wisely pressed for both the move to a modern electronic submission system and the recruitment of more senior editors. Both of these seem necessary for the smooth running of a modern journal and are a marked contrast with the time when even using a spreadsheet and a Psion Organiser seemed the height of technology.But the mark of a good editor is not just practical and technological but rather making difficult decisions balancing widening access to publication with high academic standards. This is a particular challenge for philosophy and mental healthcare but one that John has managed with aplomb.Derek Strijbos writesHe was a central figure in the international academic field of philosophy and psychiatry ever since I was introduced to the topic by my supervisors here in the Netherlands, about 20 years ago. According to the approach developed by Thomas A. Sebeok (1921–2001) and his ‘global semiotics,’ semiosis and life converge. This leads to his cardinal axiom: ‘semiosis is the criterial attribute of life.’ His global approach to sign life presupposes his critique of anthropocentrism and glottocentrism. Global semiotics is open to zoosemiotics, indeed, even more broadly, biosemiotics which extends its gaze to semiosis in the whole living universe to include the realms of macro- and microorganisms. “INTELLECTUAL LIGHTENING”: A tribute to John Harris through a collection of memories, imaginary books, fictional reviews, and an interview. John Harris’ impressive and diverse academic career is illustrated and remembered by his colleagues who each contribute with a special memory, story or fake book review, in order to thank John and to cherish the memories. A good philosopher, a kind person, a teacher, different aspects of his work are discussed.

Anthony Dyson was a key figure in the early years of the Society for the Study of Christian Ethics, and was influential in the establishing of this journal. He was a member of its Editorial Board from 1989 until his death in September 1998. We pay tribute to his scholarship and record our gratitude for his outstanding work as a moral theologian. His contribution to Studies in Christian Ethics will be greatly missed.

The term “tribute” had a strong presence in Western literature on China, as a result of Sino-European encounters in the eighteenth to nineteenth centuries. In these studies tribute was examined from the China angle. When views of the neighboring peoples are taken into consideration, it becomes evident that the smaller states in Inner Asia had not adopted the notion of China. A comparison with the practices of the Ottoman empire reveals that they also were using a strategy similar (...) China. The paper suggests examining the practices of the smaller states in their own terms rather than in the shadow of the larger states. (shrink)

In this paper I explore and defend the idea that those who struggle intellectually in theistic religious practice can be given a good reason to persist in it by treating their continuing practice as a way of paying tribute to people and projects and personal relationships and indeed to the whole moral dimension of human life, expressing how important and profoundly significant these things are to them. This ‘tribute of faith’ is a gesture that one makes with one’s (...) life—a moral gesture. The key thought is that the sayings and other doings of a religious life allow one to treat the world as one in which the things, such as projects and people, that are, for one, most deeply imbued with moral value will achieve fulfilment—a fulfillment that without the truth of religious claims they would often be denied.
