Nawet jeżeli integrację poznania rozproszonego z mechanistycznymi koncepcjami wyjaśniania można uznać za ruch interesujący, a w przypadku powodzenia prowadzący do niebanalnego rozszerzenia kognitywistycznych badań nad poznaniem, to z perspektywy teoretyka poznania rozproszonego należy uznać ten ruch za ryzykowny. W poniższej pracy, w dyskusji z propozycją Witolda Wachowskiego (2022), postaram się przedstawić ryzyko, z jakim wiąże się wspomniana integracja i zaproponuję rozwiązanie alternatywne, polegające na połączeniu rozproszenia poznania z teorią sieci. Artykuł omawia koncepcję poznania w ujęciu Błażeja Pascala na tle dyskusji epistemologicznych XVII i XVIII wieku. Wskazuje na integralność ludzkiej wiedzy postulowanej przez Pascala. Winna ona zespalać z jednej strony rozum, pojęty w sensie operacji dyskursywnej, z intuicją i instynktem, a z drugiej – poznanie naturalne z wiarą. Pascal wychodzi poza zestaw prawd dostępnych w poznaniu ugruntowanym na dyskursie. Szczególną rolę wyznaczał intuicji określanej w kategoriach sentir czy nawet instinct, operując takimi kategoriami jak esprit de finesse, utożsamiany z sens (...) droit czy esprit de justesse, istotnymi w odniesieniu do poznania principes. Równocześnie tak pojęte wyposażenie ludzkiego umysłu odpowiada aspektywnie wiedzy ugruntowanej na coeur, przeciwstawianej interpretowanemu racjonalistycznie raison, gdy na gruncie religii lumière naturelle jest komplementarne wobec inspiration czy révélation. Podejście to, opozycyjne wobec przejawów naturalistycznie pojętego racjonalizmu, wydaje się wpisywać w długi ciąg filozofii zdrowego rozsądku liczącej się z realiami ludzkiej natury. Sięga ona myśli Arystotelesa, mimo nowożytnej kontestacji jego nauki. Punktem odniesienia rozważań Pascala nade wszystko jest jednak epistemologia Kartezjusza podkreślającego znaczenie apriorycznych elementów poznania, traktowanych jako naturalne wyposażenie ludzkiego umysłu, do których odwołuje się intuicja czy instynkt. Konsekwencją integralności poznania jest akceptacja maksymalistycznie pojętej filozofii, nawet jeśli w nowożytności zmienił się paradygmat – z metafizycznego na epistemologiczny. Traktowanie ówczesnych ograniczeń w zakresie wykładu metafizyki jako przejawu minimalizmu, a nawet swoistego agnostycyzmu, nie wydaje się jednak uprawnione dlatego, że ze względu na zmianę nowożytnego paradygmatu to epistemologia była głównym terenem, na którym rozgrywały się podstawowe spory filozoficzne. Owocowały one określonymi rozstrzygnięciami światopoglądowymi, istotnymi w perspektywie ówczesnej dominacji kultury religijnej. Być może nawet, że to właśnie religijne milieu wymuszało podjęcie wątków metafizycznych, które stanowiłyby fundament światopoglądu religijnego. W tym kontekście wymóg ten aktualizowało ówczesne szkolnictwo, preferując u schyłku wieku oświecenia szkocką filozofię zdrowego rozsądku, broniącą integralności ludzkiej wiedzy wobec przejawów filozoficznego minimalizmu, a nawet swoistego sceptycyzmu, groźnego dla ładu kulturowego. Názor, že poznanie je hodnotné, tvorí kľúčový predpoklad epistemológie. Vo svojej klasickej podobe je vyjadrený komparatívnou tézou, že poznanie je hodnotnejšie než pravdivá mienka. Rôzne teoretické pokusy o vysvetlenie hodnoty poznania však doteraz neboli definitívne úspešné. Môže za to najmä tzv. problém pohltenia, v dôsledku ktorého akýkoľvek konštituent poznania nad rámec pravdivej mienky nemôže byť zdrojom hodnoty poznania. Časť autorov preto obracia pozornosť k fenoménu porozumenia, ktoré označujú za primárnu epistemickú hodnotu, pričom skúmanie hodnoty poznania odsúvajú (...) do úzadia. V tejto situácii spočíva možné riešenie problému hodnoty poznania v odmietnutí predpokladu, že vysvetlenie hodnoty poznania musí byť univerzálne. Tým sa otvára priestor pre pluralistické koncepcie, ktoré rozličným poznatkom pripisujú odlišné druhy hodnôt. (shrink)

[…] Głównym wnioskiem płynącym z niniejszej próby syntetycznego zestawienia wybranych analogii pomiędzy sceptyczną a Nietzscheańską krytyką poznania jest, iż rzeczonych krytyk nie należy traktować jako rozważań jałowych, nieproduktywnych czy wręcz czysto destruktywnych. Podnosząc problem konstruowania świata, obie krytyki zwiększyły bowiem naszą samoświadomość interpretacji. Jeżeli zaś sceptycy i Nietzsche zgadzają się w tym, iż dostępne nam są jedynie perspektywiczne przekłamania rzeczywistości, a nie „prawdziwa rzeczywistość”, to oba projekty łączy gruntowna krytyka naiwnego realizmu. […] pragniemy podkreślić – wbrew wielokrotnie wygłaszanym sądom, (...) podług których sceptycyzm był przejawem upadku greckiej myśli – iż naszym zdaniem sceptycyzm jest jednym z najważniejszych wydarzeń nie tylko w historii filozofii starożytnej, ale w dziejach historii filozofii w ogóle. Jest on bowiem pierwszą na taką skalę przeprowadzoną, systematyczną próbą zakwestionowania wszelkich roszczeń do posiadania prawdy absolutnej. Co sofistyka rozpoczęła, w sceptycyzmie osiągnęło swą akme, a wedle perspektywy proponowanej w niniejszym artykule otwiera się możliwość spojrzenia na sceptyków jako na myślicieli, którzy występując przeciwko absolutnej prawdzie dogmatyków, przygotowali grunt pod myślenie pluralistyczne. The Limits of Cognition and the Shape of Being Based on the Thought of Karl Jaspers The article points out the elements of Karl Jaspers’ epistemological conception that cross out the possibility of a comprehensive account of being. The key issue here is the limits of cognition, which take the form of object cognition. The theme of limits points to the inadequacies of human thinking in the context of quantifiable and absolutist representations of reality. The impossibility of adequately grasping the (...) totality of reality will be illustrated here by means of the criticism Jaspers levelled at absolutising metaphysics. In connection with the description of the structure of cognition proposed by Jaspers, the article points out the conceptual proximity of the issue of worldview and metaphysics in the light of the thought of the cited author. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest dyskusja z niektórymi tezami zawartymi w książce Witolda Płotki, Studia z fenomenologii poznania. Transcedentalna filozofia Edmunda Husserla a problem wiedzy. Zostaje podjęta kwestia dotyczącą miejsca i znaczenia rozważań nad językiem w kontekście fenomenologii Husserlowskiej. Autor zastanawia się, czy język jest medium przezroczystym, czy jednak jest on elementem konstytutywnym dla treści i charakteru doświadczenia.

"The Problem of Intersubjectivity in Berkeley’s Immaterialism" The paper discusses the issue of intersubjectivity in Berkeley’s early philosophy. In the course of metaphysical analysis I argue that it is not possible to save within Berkeleian metaphysics intersubjectivity of the object of cognition and the unity of the world of experience, either in version of its strict identity or by taking perfect likeness as a criterion of its identity.

The article elucidates and assesses the Marburg School’s account of the cognition. The characteristic feature of epistemology from this School is the rejection of the mirroring and acceptance of the cognitive transformation. The criticism of the mirroring theory is implicitly contained in Paul Natorp’s and Hermann Cohen’s cognitive relationism. Ernst Cassirer articulated this critical epistemology in his philosophy of the symbolic form and his conception of the symbolic representation. The article is devoted the problem of artificial intelligence. The main thesis is that a computer is able to simulate some of human activity, e.g. cognitive activity, but a computer is not substitute for brain (or mind). It can never become an autonomous subject.

In this review-paper, I focus on biopsychological foundations of geometric cognition. Starting from the Kant’s views on mathematics, I attempt to show that contemporary cognitive scientists, alike the famous philosopher, recognize mutual relationships of visuospatial processing and geometric cognition. What I defend is a claim that Tinbergen’s explanatory questions are the most fruitful tool for explaining our “hardwired,” and thus shared with other animals, Euclidean intuitions, which manifest themselves in spatial navigation and shape recognition. I claim, however, that these “hardwired (...) intuitions” cannot capture full-blooded Euclidean geometry, which demands practice with cultural artifacts in various time-scales. (shrink)

The academic community believes that the ulterior end of science is accumulation of knowledge. Other ethical constraints that pertain to the scientist are not different from those which oblige every other man in society to act decently, except for specifically professional norms which bind academics, but these, in point of fact, have their counterparts in any other profession, too. Thus the specific moral commitment of the academic profession worthy of a careful study and discussion is the claim that knowledge should (...) be accumulated as an ulterior end. Moral underpinnings of this position have to be laid bare together with social and moral consequences of the growth of knowledge. (shrink)

It is specific for biology that the scientist himself is an integral part of his subject of study. In the article the problem of the cognitive limitations of the scientist (as a representative of a certain species belonging to the biosphere) is considered.

Śankara did not comment on the first s ū tra in his Brahmas ū trabh āṣ ya, which was a common practice in such cases; rather, he started by defining two terms: ‘superimposition’ and ‘ignorance’, in a special introductory chapter known to a wider audience as Adhy ā sabh āṣ ya. The question arises as to why he deemed it necessary to precede his commentary to the initial s ū tra with these additional elucidations. Bh ā mat ī, Vācaspati Miśra’s (...) commentary on Mah ā s ū trabh āṣ ya, seems to shed some light on the problem. According to the doctrine of advaita, the phrase ‘desire to know Brahman’ in the first s ū tra seems prima facie to have no meaning. Thus, the introductory commentary is an explanation of an idea of Brahman which is foreign to advaita. (shrink)

Mechanika kwantowa wprowadziła nowy zestaw rewolucyjnych idei, takich jak dualizm korpuskularno-falowy, superpozycja stanów, nieoznaczoność, komplementarność, splątanie i całkowicie nowe podejście do prawdopodobieństwa. Mechanika kwantowa została stworzona w celu wyjaśnienia paradoksalnych odkryć, całkowicie niemożliwych do wyjaśnienia w ramach fizyki klasycznej. Współcześnie podobną sytuację możemy znaleźć w naukach o poznaniu i teoriach decyzji – wiele odkryć wydaje się paradoksalnych z punktu widzenia klasycznej teorii prawdopodobieństwa. Na przykład w pewnych warunkach ludzie szacują prawdopodobieństwo koniunkcji zdarzeń A i B jako większe niż prawdopodobieństwo z (...) członów koniunkcji, co jest nazywane błędem koniunkcji, w innych okolicznościach oceniają prawdopodobieństwo sumy zdarzeń A lub B jako mniejsze niż prawdopodobieństwo jednego ze zdarzeń, co jest nazywane błędem dysjunkcji.Celem niniejszego artykułu jest omówienie podstawowych idei programu badawczego Quantum Cognition, który jest zastosowaniem abstrakcyjnego formalizmu mechaniki kwantowej do modelowania czynności poznawczych i procesów decyzyjnych. Kwantowa teoria prawdopodobieństwa, pierwotnie stworzona w celu opisania pomiaru w mechanice kwantowej, wydaje się skutecznym narzędziem w modelowaniu czynności poznawczych i procesów decyzyjnych. Michael Polanyi’s philosophical ideas are interpret in various ways worldwide. In Poland the name remains (barely) listed among such philosophers of science as Thomas Kuhn and Paul Feyerabend, whereas English or German authors regard him rather as a theorist of knowledge and place aside Gilbert Ryle, Charles Sanders Peirce, Hans-Georg Gadamer or Maurice Merleau-Ponty. The aim of the paper is to describe typical ways of how Polanyi’s ideas are being currently received and to report his main statements. It is proceeded (...) in four steps. After short biography of the author briefed in first point, second one sums up the content of all his main works, depicting thereby the evolution of his views. In third point receptions published in Polish, English and German literature are screened and discussed, focusing on issues of rationality, personal knowledge, tacit knowledge and tacit knowing. Fourth point states a problem of alleged holism and eclecticism as interpretative characteristics of Polanyi’s philosophical views. (shrink)

Elements... is a collection of seventeen, rather informal talks closely dependent on the aristotelian and thomist metaphysical setting. The author explicitly disregards a historical approach to the subject and in an essentially systematic way tries to argue in favor of a metaphysically pluralist and epistemologically optimist - realist solution. These two options constitute, therefore, the specific limits of the textbook.

This paper looks at a central issue with embodiment theories in cognition: the role, if any, they provide for mental representation. Thelen and Smith (1994) hold that the concept of representations is either vacuous or misapplied in such systems. Others maintain a place for representations (e.g. Clark 1996), but are imprecise about their nature and role. It is difficult to understand what those could be if representations are understood in the same sense as that used by computationalists: fixed or long-lasting (...) neural structures that represent the sensory stimuli that caused them (e.g. neural response patterns in the visual cortex), or whose “meaning” is fixed innately or in early development for particular functions (e.g. the body schemas for Meltzoff and Gopnik 1993). The paper proposes a distinctions between, on the one hand, neural patterns, traces of sensory activation that while not in themselves representations are available for representational activity, and on the other the act of representing, which is what gives representational content to neural patterns. The paper is a comment on distributed cognition treated as an approach to the study of all cognition. This account is presented by E. Hutchins in the article “The cultural ecosystem of human cognition”, as well as in other works.

The paper is a part of my research on the history of a concept of intuition and a category of insight in writings of Canadian philosopher and theologian Bernard Lonergan (1904-1984). The philosophical discussions make use of many partly or totally different concepts of intuition, and the variety of those concepts is related to many aspects of intuition: a type of “object” that intuition is; the way of grasping of its object by intuition; its epistemic functions, etc. From the metatheoretical (...) point of view I am looking the answer to the question: what type of “objects” (designatum) was denoted in the history by the term intuition and its foreign languages counterparts? When I employ the term designatum of “intuition” I am looking for more general categories for intuition. In classical terms, it is about finding genus proximus for intuition. I distinguish and characterize three basic types of denotation the term intuition: 1) (intuitive) knowing, understood as cognitive acts (for example insight), as something that is not an act, and as process; 2) (intuitive) knowledge, as propositional knowledge (propositions, beliefs) or non-propositional knowledge (knowledge-how or knowledge by acquaintance), and 3) faculty (for example intellect) or ability (disposition) of mind to produce intuitive knowledge. The aim of the paper is an analysis of the theory of knowledge as a reflection (Abbildtheorie), which was presented by Martin Heidegger in the earliest phase his philosophy, when he was under great influence of Neo-Kantian thought. The papers compare Heideggers position with the arguments of the neo-Kantians such as Heinrich Rickert and Ernst Cassirer. These early beliefs are referenced to the subsequent position, when was shown by Heidegger in the work Kant und das Problem der Metaphysik in 1929, (...) where he undertakes the polemics with the Neo-Kantianism. In this article I am dealing mainly with the following notions: “perception apparatus” (Weltbildapparat), “view of the world” (Weltbild, picture of the world) and “representation”. The first and the second ones belong to the basic notions in the vocabulary of K. Lorenz’s evolutionary epistemology, the third in cognitive sciences. I seek to demonstrate the relationships between them. This analysis is put in a broader context, indicating the relationships between expensively developing cognitive sciences and evolutionary epistemology (much less popular today). It (...) is quite easy to determine what the perception apparatus is, however, it is harder to state what the view of the world, especially in its ontological aspect, is. Nevertheless, the view of the representation in the context of evolutionary epistemology points to the fact that this notion is still unclear and many representational features can be assigned to objects which, as it seems, are not representations according to cognitive sciences. The article makes an attempt at comparing two perspectives from which philosophical cognition starts – a perspective which can be encountered in Spinoza’s Ethics and a perspective which can be encountered in Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason. In the first case, a finite subject of the philosophical cognition embarks on the cognition of the substance, that is, reality in its comprehensiveness; in the second case, a finite subject of philosophical cognition reflects upon the totality of the field of possible experience, (...) uncovering the conditions of its possibility. Both kinds of cognition consist in a pursuit to comprehend what is necessary and strictly universal. I claim that as much as the source of the cognition at stake is, on Spinoza’s account, provided by the intuitive grasp of the ontological identity of the subject and the whole of the reality, on Kant account, indicating the source or the ground of the transcendental cognition proves more difficult, even though it might be granted that as in Spinoza’s cognition of the substance, also in the cognition which furnishes the judgments of the Critique of Pure Reason, intuition plays the decisive role.
