Fénelon’s letters to Madame Guyon show Eros, the life drive that aims a joyful creation, intimately dialoguing with the deadly asceticism: Thanatos. This polarity is indeed required by quietism. The idea is, by reaching the end of Thanatos ("the weakness of man" - his annihilation), to glimpse Eros ("the craziest hope" of uniting with God). The letters are structured thematically around this wager of the "union" in the "death" and provide us with the opportunity to explore the genesis of Fénelon’s (...) writing’s most radical stakes: a contradictory relationship to life and death drives and its effect on repetition. Throughout these letters, Fénelon evokes his famous "dryness", turning him into "a boat that has neither oars nor sails", and which has since been studied as a death drive. Written between 1689 and 1690, the letters give an insight on the origins of the link between mysticism, psychoanalysis and stylistics in Fénelon’s work. They teach us that in this epistolary relationship lived and narrated as exceptional by both Guyon and Fénelon, the life drive finds an anchor point and, as a result, the literary value of repetitions is diminished. If redundancies always express as much as elsewhere the dogma of pure love or death instinct - which the correspondents never cease to gloss, the impulse of life is slightly expressed, dried up by the love confessions. Fenelon definitively seals the Eros and Thanatos’s marriage through the expression "to die of envy". Once this marriage pronounced, the writing has no more reason to start. It stops. (shrink)

Objectives: To clarify how lay people and health professionals judge the acceptability of ending the life of a terminally ill patient.Design: Participants judged this acceptability in a set of 16 scenarios that combined four factors: the identity of the actor , the patient’s statement or not of a desire to have his life ended, the nature of the action as relatively active or passive , and the type of suffering .Participants: 115 lay people and 72 health professionals in Toulouse, France.Main (...) measurements: Mean acceptability ratings for each scenario for each group.Results: Life ending interventions are more acceptable to lay people than to the health professionals. For both, acceptability is highest for intractable physical suffering; is higher when patients end their own lives than when physicians do so; and, when physicians are the actors, is higher when patients have expressed a desire to die than when they have not . In contrast, when patients perform the action, acceptability for the lay people and nurse’s aides does not depend on whether the patient has expressed a desire to die, while for the nurses and physicians unassisted suicide is more acceptable than physician assisted suicide.Conclusions: Lay participants judge the acceptability of life ending actions in largely the same way as do healthcare professionals. Objective: To determine under what conditions lay people and health professionals find it acceptable for a physician to breach confidentiality to protect the wife of a patient with a sexually transmitted disease .Methods: In a study in France, breaching confidentiality in 48 scenarios were accepted by 144 lay people, 10 psychologists and 7 physicians. The scenarios were all possible combinations of five factors: severity of the disease ; time taken to discuss this with ; intent to inform the spouse about (...) the disease ; intent to adopt protective behaviours ; and decision to consult an expert in STDs , 2×2×3×2×2. The importance and interactions of each factor were determined, at the group level, by performing analyses of variance and constructing graphs.Results: The concept of breaching confidentiality to protect a wife from her husband’s STD was favoured much more by lay people and psychologists than by physicians . The patient’s stated intentions to protect his wife and to inform her of the disease had the greatest impact on acceptability. A cluster analysis showed groups of lay participants who found breaching confidentiality “always acceptable” , “depending on the many circumstances” , requiring “consultation with an expert” and “never acceptable ”.Conclusions: Most people in France are influenced by situational factors when deciding if a physician should breach confidentiality to protect the spouse of a patient infected with STD. In this article, we put forward a new strategy for teaching the concept of energy. In the first section, we discuss how the concept is currently treated in educational programmes at primary and secondary level (taking the case of France), the learning difficulties that arise as well as the main teaching strategies presented in science education literature. In the second section, we argue that due to the complexity of the concept of energy, rethinking how it is taught should involve teacher (...) training specifically developed for the concept. In our view, Epistemology and the History of Science and Technology (EHST) is the best method for a full understanding of the concept of energy and should thus be included in the teacher training programme. In the third section, we provide a general framework for a teacher training programme on energy, based on the history and epistemology of the concept and structured on the following three questions: ‘What is the origin of the concept of energy?’, ‘What is energy?’ and ‘What purpose does the concept of energy serve?’. Institutions in France are not yet well prepared to respond to allegations of scientific misconduct. Following a serious allegation in late 1997. INSERM,* the primary organization for medical and health-related research in France, began to reflect on this subject, aided by scientists and jurists. The conclusions have resulted in establishing a procedure to be followed in cases of alleged misconduct, and also in reinforcing the application of good laboratory practices within each laboratory. Guidelines for authorship practices and scientific assessment must (...) also be considered. Even though each institution must remain responsible for responding to allegations of scientific misconduct within its doors, INSERM would like to see national, European, and international co-ordination about the methods of such response. But the media are also computerized and, above all, a place to define the objects and political posturing. In particular, the desire to provide the elements of a possible debate often turns to set visibility, less speech than of its possibility. My lecture is concerned with a presentation of the method of Deleuzian thought, which - I would like to contend - well represent the change that has taken place in postmodernist thought. Deleuze is unique in calling himself a "classical metaphysicist," i.e. a restorer of classical thought, albeit via the screen - thought which has managed to survive and overcome the obstacle of modernity. The Deleuzian unification of pre-modern thought and modernist critique with Nietzsche's theory of eternal repetition gives rise (...) to a method, whose utter meaning is an attempt to provide thinkers with sharp tools for successfully opposing later capitalism and globalization, something that stands at the very heart of Deleuzian metaphysics. This opposition, which in effect is also a new doctrine of moral aesthetics, lies at the core of this present lecture. I would like to present the special combative nature of Deleuzian thought, and through him to present a different radical angle of the post-modern paradigm. (shrink)

Between 1987 and 1997, Thailand experienced a bubble economy. When the bubble economy exploded in 1997, the country suddenly experienced an economic crisis: it was in heavy debt and became financially controlled by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The problem was caused by the country’s desire to rapidly change itself from an agricultural country to an industrial one, without considering its own comparative advantage in that its climate and resources are more suitable for agriculture. Thailand also wanted to become a (...) newly industrialized country and a inancial hub of Southeast Asia without considering its readiness. These ideas came to a halt after the bubble economy explosion. However, just after Thailand managed to solve its debt problem with the IMF, thegovernment once again declared its desire to turn the country into the ‘Detroit of Asia’, to develop the capital, Bangkok, into the region’s fashion hub and to launch a substantial number of mega-projects, albeit with the existence of a widening economic gap between the rural and urban areas. This economic trend became known as “Thaksinomics” with reference to the name of the Prime Minister at that time, Thaksin Shinawatra. On the other hand, there has been a great deal of criticism of such a trend, which has been seen as a capitalist move promoting the consumerist behaviour of Thai people. There is, therefore, a call for Thai society to review itself, especially in its social and economic development aspects, and a change to a new kind of development with an emphasis on self-reliance andmoderation. This call is based on a Buddhist belief which is reflected in the old Thai way of life. This kind of economy is called “Self-Sufficiency Economy” as opposed to a capitalist-consumerist economy. It is believed that this new direction will help lay a strong foundation for the Thai economy and provide it with a high level of immunity for progress towards a more stable and sustainable economy. Félicité Robert de La Mennais serait-il le précurseur de Karl Marx? Voici la question originale que pose ici Aimé Richardt à propos d'une personnalité complexe, qui va consacrer sa vie à la défense des pauvres, des humbles, des ouvriers. Celui qui avait tout d'abord défendu avec ferveur l'autorité spirituelle absolue du pape dans son Essai sur l'indifférence en matière de religion, va, en quelques années, changer radicalement. Avec Montalembert et Lacordaire, il fonde le journal L'Avenir, lieu d'expression d'un christianisme (...) libéral en gestation. Par leurs articles et leurs prises de position tranchées, ils s'attirent les foudres de Rome et du pouvoir. Condamnés par le pape Grégoire XVI, les trois hommes se séparent. Les premiers se soumettent, mais Lamennais, dans une dérive inéluctable, se révolte et rompt avec l'Eglise catholique. Il publie alors un ouvrage qui fera date : Paroles d'un croyant. Ce livre connaît un succès immédiat, en appelant à la révolte contre l'injustice au nom de l'Evangile. Il contient en germe, plus de trente ans avant Le Capital, la plupart des idées qui y seront développées. Après des aventures politiques contrastées et décevantes - député de gauche à l'Assemblée nationale de 1848 -, Lamennais meurt dans la pauvreté, à Paris, hors de l'Eglise. Replongeant dans les écrits et la correspondance de Lamennais, Aimé Richardt le suit pas à pas dans ses combats et ses révoltes, jusqu'à la fosse commune du Père-Lachaise, où fut déposé son corps le 1er mars 1854. The impact of smaller firm size on corporate social responsibility (CSR) is ambiguous. Some contend that small businesses are socially responsible by nature, while others argue that a smaller firm size imposes barriers on small firms that constrain their ability to take responsible action. This paper critically analyses recent theoretical and empirical contributions on the size–social responsibility relationship among small businesses. More specifically, it reviews the impact of firm size on four antecedents of business behaviour: issue characteristics, personal characteristics, organizational (...) characteristics and context characteristics. It concludes that the small business context does impose barriers on social responsibility taking, but that the impact of the smaller firm size on social responsibility should be nuanced depending on a number of conditions. From a critical analysis of these conditions, opportunities for small businesses and their constituents to overcome the constraining barriers are suggested. (shrink)
