In her 2006 book ‘‘My Stroke of Insight” Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor relates her experience of suffering from a left hemispheric stroke caused by a congenital arteriovenous malformation which led to a loss of inner speech. Her phenomenological account strongly suggests that this impairment produced a global self-awareness deficit as well as more specific dysfunctions related to corporeal awareness, sense of individuality, retrieval of autobiographical memories, and self-conscious emotions. Didacticism, romanticism, and classicism are the possible schemata for the knotting of art and philosophy, the third term in this knot being the education of subjects, youth in particular. What characterizes the century that has just come to a close is that, while it underwent the saturation of these three schemata, it failed to introduce a new one. Today, this predicament tends to produce a kind of unknotting of terms, a desperate dis-relation between art and philosophy, together with the pure (...) and simple collapse of what circulated between them: the theme of education. Whence the thesis of which this book is nothing but a series of variations: faced with such a situation of saturation and closure, we must attempt to propose a new schema, a fourth type of knot between philosophy and art. Among these “inaesthetic” variations, the reader will encounter a sustained debate with contemporary philosophical uses of the poem, bold articulations of the specificity and prospects of theater, cinema, and dance, along with subtle and provocative readings of Fernando Pessoa, Ste;phane Mallarme;, and Samuel Beckett. The present review of literature surveys two main issues related to self-referential processes: (1) Where in the brain are these processes located, and do they correlate with brain areas uniquely specialized in self-processing? (2) What are the empirical and theoretical links between inner speech and self-awareness? Although initial neuroimaging attempts tended to favor a right hemispheric view of selfawareness, more recent work shows that the brain areas which support self-related processes are located in both hemispheres and are not uniquely activated (...) during self-reflective tasks. Furthermore, self-awareness at least partially relies on internal speech. An activation of Broca's area (which is known to sustain inner speech) is observed in a significant number of brain-imaging studies of self-reflection. Loss of inner speech following brain damage produces self-awareness deficits. Inner speech most likely can internally reproduce social mechanisms leading to self-awareness. Also, the process of self-reflection can be seen as being a problem-solving task, and self-talk as being a cognitive tool the individual uses to effectively work on the task. It is noted that although a large body of knowledge already exists on self-awareness, little is known about individual differences in dispositional self-focus and types of self-attention (e.g., rumination vs. self-reflection). Cutting through simultaneously the conventions of sinology and a capitalist universalism modeled on the West, Jullien unfolds a difference between Chinese thought and philosophy that allows it to be thought out without taking sides. His unusual move insists on the irreducibility of the difference yet at the same time renders the irreducibility intelligible; Jullien gives us a world structured by distinct lines of thought.

Szmimary.—The present report investigated the question of how individual differences in self-consciousness devdop. Rimé and LeBon proposed that high self-consciousness follows a history of frequent exposure to selffocusing stimuli, i.e., mirrors, audiences, audio and video devices, and cameras. To explore this hypothesis private and public self-consciousness and past exposure to self-focusing stimuli were assessed in 438 subjects. Analysis indicated that history of frequent exposure to self-focusing stimuli is significantly but weakly related to high private self-consciousness in men and to high (...) public self-consciousness in women. This supports previous observations suggesting that the routes to the development of selfconsciousness seem to differ for the two sexes. (shrink)

Little is know about factors that influence the development of public self-consciousness. One potential factor is exposure to audiences: being repeatedly aware of one's object status could create a high disposition to focus on public self-aspects. To explore this hypothesis public self-consciousness was assessed in two groups of subjects: 62 professors and actors (high exposure to audiences) and 39 people without audience experience. Analysis show that significant differences exist for public self-consciousness in men only. Also, history of frequent exposure to (...) audience is significantly but weakly correlated with high public self-consciousness in men. This supports previous observations indicating that self-consciousness seems to develop differently for men and women. (shrink)

Les politiques contradictoires des États et des institutions internationales ne contribuent pas non plus à améliorer une situation qui reste préoccupante.The resumption of Gypsy migrations since the fall of communist regimes in Central and Eastern Europe revives a series of prejudices and stereotypes that do not capture the complexity of the phenomenon. Displacement of Roma do not occur only in the East to the West of the continent, but reflect a general recovery in the movement of families into mobile mainly economic. The cultural consequences of this phenomenon are unexpected. If the logic of family networks both flexible and centripetal is not challenged by the exploration of new lands, the xenophobic discourse against Gypsies do not disappear and therefore restrict the role of smugglers culture that they fulfill traveling. Contradictory policies of states and international institutions do not contribute more to improve a situation that is worrying. (shrink)

Il s'agit, en d'autres termes, d'encourager la production des contenus qui tiennent compte à la fois des différentes cultures et des contextes particuliers. Tout en se situant dans une perspective de «e-inclusion», cette étude vise à comprendre la manière dont les internautes africains francophones adaptent les nouvelles technologies à leurs besoins, de déceler les usages spécifiques à cette communauté. En (...) effet, si la technologie demeure «un phénomène universel », son utilisation reste liée à l'appartenance socioculturelle de l'internaute. En d'autres termes, les croyances, les habitudes de vie des individus influent sur l'usage que chacun fait de la technologie. S'interroger sur les usages particuliers des africains francophones revient donc à analyser la façon dont cette « double identité » se manifeste sur le cyberespace.The World Summit on the Information Society confirmed the necessity to promote cultural diversity on the internet. This means that content production which takes different cultures and particular contexts into account must be encouraged. In the prospect of "e-inclusion", this article aims to show how French-speaking African internauts adapt new technologies to their needs by showing the specific user behaviour of this community. Indeed, if technology remains a universal phenomenon, its use is linked with the internauts’ social and cultural profiles. On the other hand, people’s beliefs and ways of life influence individual and collective uses of technology. The question about the particular user behaviour of African French speakers leads us to analyse the way this "double identity” has shown itself in cyberspace. (shrink)

Il s’agira donc d’observer ce qui se donne à voir sur des réseaux socionumériques considérés comme nouveaux et émergents dans une diaspora « reconnue » par son caractère solidaire. Cette réflexion s’appuie sur des données issues d’une enquête en ligne, réalisée sur la base d’un questionnaire, auprès d’internautes de la diaspora. En effet, la question de la diaspora est nécessairement liée à celle (...) de la solidarité dans la mesure où elle implique une recherche d’amélioration des conditions de vie du pays ou de la région d’origine. Quant à la solidarité, elle est indissociable de la réflexion sur le lien social dans la mesure où ce dernier traduit tout ce qui maintient, entretient une solidarité entre les membres d’une même communauté.In discussing the various uses of social networks, this article seeks to highlight signs and expressions of solidarity and sharing. We therefore observe what is being disclosed on emerging social networking sites that are seen as newcomers to a diaspora which is “recognised” as rooted in solidarity. Our discussion draws on data from an online survey conducted through a questionnaire among web users within the diaspora. The diaspora idea necessarily stems from the question of solidarity, insofar as it implies the goal of improving living conditions in the country or region where it originated. As for solidarity, this is inseparable from the question of social ties, since these reflect anything that maintains and sustains solidarity between the members of a community. (shrink)

Kant’s essay on the question of literary piracy has so far been read as a foundational text in the history of literary property. When Kant refers to the book as a “mute instrument,” scholars of intellectual property already know how to interpret that formulation because they presume the distinction that the contemporary jurisprudence of intellectual property makes between matter and form and its concomitant assumption that print is just an inert, nonagentive medium. In fact, Kant begins his analysis of unauthorized (...) publication not with the question What is an author? but with the question What is publication?. His insight was that unauthorized publication revealed a structural feature of publication in general. The effect of the interposition of print, or the fact that speech begins in and with print, is that the author is structurally alienated from his or her speech. Kant was not an Enlightenment media theorist, but he recognized that speech had to be mediated and therefore delivered to the reader and that it was the medium itself that determined the conditions under which authors and readers could exist and be present to one another and under which speech could become an authorship. In order to create a language channel for public reason, Kant had to take a detour through the legal fiction of agency. Speech might have been an action that could have its existence “only in a person,” but this supposedly innate bond was made by a legal fiction of representation, according to which one person could truly speak “as if” they were another. Kant’s answer to the question What is a book? developed a law that was not so much a law of literary property as a law that sought to suspend the alienating effects of print so as to restore the Enlightenment ideal of communication. Published in 1973, "L'Etourdit" was one of the French philosopher Jacques Lacan's most important works. The book posed questions that traversed the entire body of Lacan's psychoanalytical explorations, including his famous idea that "there is no such thing as a sexual relationship," which seeks to undermine our certainties about intimacy and reality. In There's No Such Thing as a Sexual Relationship, Alain Badiou and Barbara Cassin take possession of Lacan's short text, thinking "with" Lacan about his propositions and what (...) kinds of questions they raise in relation to knowledge. Cassin considers the relationship of the real to language through a Sophist lens, while the Platonist Badiou unpacks philosophical claims about truth. Ce texte propose une définition de la conscience de soi et explique en quoi cette capacité naît du monde social. Il est postulé que ce dernier permet un mouvement de recul - une «distanciation » - par rapport à soi, et que le cerveau reproduit ce mouvement grâce à certains processus cognitifs qui en ont été imprimés. Parmi ceux-ci, on retrouve le langage intérieur, qui, par analogie, agirait comme un miroir interne capable de confronter l'expérience subjective à elle-même; de cette (...) confrontation naîtrait le soi. Un argument est présenté en faveur de la supériorité du langage intérieur sur d'autres processus cognitifs impliqués dans la conscience de soi. Le problème de la conscience de soi chez les primates est abordé, et l'article conclut sur diverses réflexions ayant trait à la schizophrénie, la prière, la méditation, et les drogues psychodysleptiques.This text proposes a definition of self-awareness and explains its social origin. It is postulated that the social milieu permits a movement to a more objective perspective for self- perception, and that this movement is then reproduced in the brain by specific cognitive processes. It is suggested that inner speech represents one such cognitive processes, which acts like a mirror to reflect subjective experience back upon itself-, the self would be generated by this reflective activity. It is argued that inner speech has a pre-eminent position among the cognitive processes implicated in self-awareness. The problem of self-awareness in primates is discussed, and the article concludes with ideas concerning schizophrenia, prayer, medi- tation, and psychodysleptic drugs. (shrink)

Cette évolution permet-elle de faire l'hypothèse que la décentralisation s'apparente à une forme instituée d'expérimentation et d'innovation publiques ? L'hypothèse mérite discussion tant elle heurte frontalement une certaine tradition politique française.

Η φυσικοχημική ανάλυση των χρωστικών υλών δεκαοκτώ σπαραγμάτων έγχρωμων κονιαμάτων, που προέρχονται από διαφορετικούς μινωικούς χώρους της Κρήτης της εποχής του Χαλκού (Αμνισός, Κνωσός, Αγία Τριάδα, Χανιά και Μάλια), επέτρεψε την ταύτιση νέων χρωστικών υλών που δεν ήταν έως σήμερα γνωστές παρά μόνο από την αιγυπτιακή ζωγραφική της ίδιας περιόδου. Η παρούσα εργασία, που δημοσιεύεται είκοσι και πλέον έτη μετά την τελευταία σημαντική μελέτη της τεχνικής των μινωικών τοιχογραφιών, προσφέρει την ευκαιρία να συνταχθεί ένας κριτικός κατάλογος χρωστικών υλών και χρωμάτων (...) που χρησιμοποιούνταν στην αιγαιακή και την αιγυπτιακή ζωγραφική. Αυτό επιτρέπει κυρίως να καθοριστεί με κάποια βεβαιότητα η προέλευση πολλών από αυτά. (shrink)

Ces différences de composition — sur la base desquelles on a tenté d'élaborer un système chronologique — démontrent que, contrairement à une idée très répandue, la plupart des matériaux utilisés dans la confection des enduits ne résultent pas forcément d'une production technologique sophistiquée.
