Background: COVID-19 pandemic has led to heightened moral distress among healthcare providers. Objectives: To identify types of moral distress among women healthcare providers during the COVID-19 pandemic; to explore how feminist political economy might be integrated into the study of moral distress. Research Design: This research draws on interviews and focus groups, the transcripts of which were analyzed using framework analysis. Research Participants and Context: 88 (...)

  17. Freedom, determinism and Gale's principle.Alexander R. Pruss - manuscript
In simplified form, the argument that I am defending holds that the incompatibility of our freedom with determinism follows from the conjunction of (1) a plausible supervenience claim which says that whether a human agent is free depends only on what happens during the agent’s life and (2) a freedom-cancellation principle of Richard Gale which says that an agent is not free if all of her actions are intentionally brought about by another agent. Improved versions of (1) and (2) are (...)

Commentary: Physicians as Public Servants in the Setting of Bioterrorism.G. Caleb Alexander & John D. Lantos - 2006 - Cambridge Quarterly of Healthcare Ethics 15 (4):422-423.
Physicians have special professional obligations to respond to medical emergencies. A bioterrorism attack would be a medical emergency. Thus, it seems that physicians would have an obligation to respond to a bioterrorist attack. However, the scope of those obligations, and their limits, are vexed topics. General rules may be comforting but the details and nuances of particular situations will always be relevant.

Nonmonotonic reasoning is a theory of the rational use of assumptions. We describe the relations between NMR and Logic, and two main paradigms of NMR, preferential and explanatory one.

Linguistic universals in the structure of understanding.Alexander L. Nikiforov - 2017 - Epistemology and Philosophy of Science 54 (4):49-56.
The author considers a problem of understanding. He claims that we understand texts, cultural objects rather than a man. He considers understanding as a process of interpretation of linguistic expressions and cultural objects. The author observes two sides of the meaning of linguistic expressions: a general (or social) one, which is common in a certain language community, and a personal one, which defines personal understanding. It is argued that mutual understanding is possible only on the stage of general meaning. However, (...)

Extending the language of the intuitionistic propositional logic Int with additional logical constants, we construct a wide family of extensions of Int with the following properties: (a) every member of this family is a maximal conservative extension of Int; (b) additional constants are independent in each of them.

    A Note on Surplus Content.Alexander Steinberg - 2017 - Australasian Philosophical Review 1 (2):202-205.
ABSTRACTIn the target article, Stephen Yablo appeals crucially to the notion of surplus content. But when he does so, it is by appeal to the notion of mathematical addition and subtraction. In this commentary, I argue that the analogy with mathematical subtraction is underdeveloped and potentially misleading.

    What, If Anything, Is Linguistic Creativity?Alexander Bergs - 2019 - Gestalt Theory 41 (2):173-183.
Summary This paper investigates the nature of creativity in language and linguistics. Following Sampson (2016), it distinguishes between F-creativity (which roughly equals linguistic productivity) and E-creativity (which leads to new and unexpected innovations). These two notions of creativity are discussed on the basis of examples from three different domains: snow cloning, mismatch/coercion, and aberration. It is shown that pure E-creativity may only be found in the case of aberration. Both snow cloning and mismatch/coercion are examples for F-creativity, but to varying (...)
