This article presents a new reading of Fichte’s aesthetics that differs from a primarily functionalist interpretation of the imagination and art. It demonstrates that the “hovering” (Schweben) of the creative imagination should be viewed as the first principle of Fichte’s aesthetics, in which the latter consists of a triad of the pleasant, the beautiful and the sublime. Moreover, it argues that in the text Ueber Geist und Buchstab in der Philosophie (1795/1800) Fichte created a real and original monogram of the (...) hovering creative imagination, a monogram whose theoretical basis stems from Kant’s concept of the monogram in the 1st Critique as a “wavering sketch”. It contends that this overlooked but key artistic and practical example of a monogram opens up new perspectives for Fichtean aesthetics, further confirming that its first principle should be explicitly identified with the theory of the hovering imagination in the Grundlage der gesammten Wissenschaftslehre of 1794/95. Issue number 4 of "SYMPHILOSOPHIE: International Journal of Philosophical Romanticism" is devoted to the Dutch philosopher François Hemsterhuis and 250th anniversary of the birth of the German romantics Novalis and Friedrich Schlegel. This fourth issue of the journal contains nearly 600 pages of new research articles, translations, review-essays, and book reviews. The main section on Hemsterhuis among the German Romantics was guest edited by Daniel Whistler (Royal Holloway, University of London).

This third 2021 issue of "SYMPHILOSOPHIE: International Journal of Philosophical Romanticism" contains a main dossier of new research articles guest edited by Leif Weatherby (New York University) and devoted to the topic of early German romanticism and science. In addition to the papers of this main section issue number 3 of SYMPHILOSOPHIE includes translations of primary sources and book reviews. All contents are freely available online.

This article presents a new interpretation of the notorious "Horen" dispute between Schiller and Fichte by examining the text that was the catalyst for it, Fichte’s "On Spirit and Letter in Philosophy" (1795-1800), from the overlooked perspective of Schiller’s 1793 essay "On Grace and Dignity". It demonstrates that the Horen dispute is based on a theoretical misunderstanding rather than an irreconcilable opposition, arguing that Schiller’s notion of grace as beauty in movement provides the idealism and aesthetics of Fichte’s Wissenschaftslehre with (...) a powerful conceptual tool that was lacking in Kant’s critical philosophy. Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805) is now regarded by many readers and scholars not simply as a poet, historian, or playwright, but as a genuine philosopher in his own right. -/- The following research articles in French and English are devoted to understanding the relationship between Schiller’s philosophy and German idealism, especially some of the chief figures associated with the inception and extended development of this movement: Kant, Reinhold, Fichte, Schelling, Hegel, and Lotze. -/- In the last twenty years in particular, ground-breaking (...) edited collections have appeared on the content and legacy of Schiller’s thought. The present volume of articles, however, is one of the first to attempt a broader investigation of Schiller’s connection to German idealism, in which the contributions have above all been written by scholars of German idealism itself. -/- The aim of this volume is to furnish foundational material for better answering the question: To what extent should Friedrich Schiller be considered a German idealist? Naturally, the response to this question depends on one’s conception of German idealism, a point discussed below. In recognition of Kant’s enduring importance, we have invited authors to mark his 300th birth year with articles, translations, and reviews that take up Kantian themes present in romantic thinkers. La distinction entre ce qui est rationnel et ce qui ne l’est pas, si structurante pour la fin de l’Antiquité et le Moyen Âge, empêche-t-elle de concevoir une condition animale commune aux bêtes et aux hommes, et surtout la possibilité d’une entente et d’une intelligence entre eux? Cet article montre que cette distinction agit comme un obstacle épistémologique dans la cosmologie et l’anthropologie du cistercien Guillaume de Saint-Thierry, pour qui la raison constitue à la fois le sommet de la vie (...) animée et la faculté qui met irrémédiablement l’homme à part. C’est sous la pression d’une expérience, celle de François d’Assise, que cette distinction, sans jamais être annulée, se trouve suspendue chez les auteurs franciscains qui méditent sur la vie du Poverello : « comme si elles avaient par à la raison », les bêtes forment avec François d’Assise une communauté de créatures qui se comprennent grâce à une intelligence plus vaste que la rationalité humaine. Contre toute attente, si l’on adopte la perspective d’un « augustinisme politique », les concepts de « cité céleste » et de « cité terrestre » ne font justement l’objet d’aucune interprétation politique dans les milieux intellectuels franciscains du xiii e siècle. Jérusalem et Babylone représentent d’abord des manières d’être et de vivre ensemble, et font donc l’objet d’une lecture spirituelle. Les frères mineurs n’en ont pas moins essayé d’esquisser, à l’écart des deux cités mystiques, un espace intermédiaire, cité des (...) hommes, qui pouvait prendre la forme d’une république chrétienne universelle (Roger Bacon), d’une théocratie juridique dont le pape est le sommet terrestre (Bonaventure), ou plus radicalement d’une anticipation de la Jérusalem céleste. Cette dernière voie est celle du joachimisme, dont Bonaventure a tenté de présenter une version orthodoxe à travers l’image de la Jérusalem d’en bas. (shrink)

This volume provides an innovative approach to the referential process thanks to its focus on the relationship between conventions and discourse pragmatics. It brings together a cross-section of current research on referential conventions and pragmatic strategies, in a number of different fields (formal and theoretical linguistics, semantics, discourse analysis, psycholinguistics, interactional linguistics, natural language processing), in a variety of verbal and non-verbal languages (English, German, different varieties of French, Indonesian, Belgian sign language) and in a diversity of contexts (the coining (...) of names, language acquisition, second language learning, and various genres such as news articles, narratives, satire or game playing). The volume is meant as a series of thought-provoking studies which place speakers and addressees at the core of the referential act, thus providing evidence on how they negotiate and adjust, depending on the context. This article proposes to retrace the path of trust that Paul Ricœur has drawn across his works. If the concept of trust is never themed as such, nevertheless it unfolds in subtle ways in fields as diverse as ethics, morality, politics, and religion. We will argue that trust is a solid but fragile foundation for Ricœur’s recognition theory. Rooted in man’s structural disproportion, trust is a perpetual tension between the finitude of existence and the infinitude of mutual recognition, between the (...) ability and fallibility of the human being -it is thus a continuous search, always disappointing but always renewed, of a mediation between the self and the other, the hope of happiness and the reality of evil. The analysis of various forms of trust, including interpersonal and institutional forms, will then be coupled with a study of trust in practical terms, based on Ricœur’s approach to healthcare relationships, or the perception of foreigners. This article investigates account episodes in Italian family dinner conversations and illustrates how sequential patterns and participation are organized in terms of preferences indexical of moral ideology and moral order. Accounts have been mostly examined as speech acts abstracted from embedding sequential environment; this article shows that different design features of the priming move in account episodes retrospectively define different aspects of a situation as problematic and prospectively activate the relevance for distinctive remedial moves. On an ideological level, narrative elicitations (...) as priming moves and accounts as remedial moves index a moral perspective that promotes moral reasoning and thus the negotiation of norms. In addition, such moves realize a practice of morality that tends to be inquisitory vs condemnatory, offering the benefit of the doubt prior to guilt allocation. In conclusion, the discursive mechanics of accountability constitutes a medium for reproduction of, and innovation in, the moral order. (shrink)

Pour Alexandre de Halès et saint Bonaventure, la totalité bien comprise n’est pas incompatible avec une multiplicité réelle et favorise à la fois la consistance ontologique et l’intelligibilité de celle-ci. À partir d’une réflexion sur le « tout parfait » (Aristote) et le « tout de puissances » (Boèce), Alexandre forge un concept de totalité compatible avec la présence d’immensité divine et même, dans le cas de Bonaventure, avec (...) l’infinité et la simplicité de Dieu. The muscle-specific kinase MuSK is part of an agrin receptor complex which stimulates tyrosine phosphorylation and drives clustering of acetylcholine receptors (AChRs) in the postsynaptic membrane at the vertebrate neuromuscular junction. MuSK also regulates synaptic gene transcription in subsynaptic nuclei. Over the past few years decisive progress has been made in the identification of MuSK effectors, helping at understanding its function in the formation of the NMJ. Alike AChR, MuSK and several of its partners are the target of mutations responsible (...) for diseases of the NMJ, such as congenital myasthenic syndromes. This minireview will focus on the multiple MuSK effectors so far identified that place MuSK at the center of a multifunctional signaling complex involved in the organization of the NMJ and associated disorders. Extracting the regularities of our environment is one of our core cognitive abilities. To study the fine-grained dynamics of the extraction of embedded regularities, a method combining the advantages of the artificial language paradigm and the serial response time task was used with a group of Guinea baboons in a new automatic experimental device. After a series of random trials, monkeys were exposed to language-like patterns. We found that the extraction of embedded patterns positioned at the end of larger patterns (...) was faster than the extraction of initial embedded patterns. This result suggests that there is a learning advantage for the final element of a sequence that benefits from the contextual information provided by previous elements. (shrink)

L’évolution du statut et de la libération des femmes dans la société espagnole contemporaine est ici étudiée à travers leur participation progressive dans une fête de Maures et Chrétiens du pays valencien. Leur trajectoire, liée aux contextes politiques et sociaux successifs, est marquée, dès le début du XXe siècle, par leur appropriation de rôles festifs jusque là réservés aux hommes. Mais ce n’est qu’à partir des années 1960 qu’elles commencent à revendiquer leur identité propre, et cette émancipation se traduit par (...) l’adoption de costumes masculins. Grâce à cette phase de marginalisation, caractérisée par le travestissement, les femmes, représentées par les « Negras », vont peu à peu reconquérir leur « féminité ». (shrink)

Dans le cadre d’une approche pragmatique, centrée sur l’usage en contexte des formes linguistiques, nous opérons une disjonction fondamentale entre fonction d’exclamation et formes d’exclamation. Le corpus choisi illustre la grande diversité des formes d’exclamation en anglais, qui ne se réduisent pas aux exclamatives en what et how. En nous appuyant sur divers travaux pragmatiques, nous montrons que la fonction d’exclamation est éminemment complexe, liée à l’expression de la subjectivité du locuteur mais également à des paramètres intersubjectifs : elle exprime (...) prototypiquement un décalage cognitif entre un état de fait et des représentations, ou entre deux états de fait, mais elle peut aussi être motivée par des conventions sociales, ou participer d’un positionnement expressif particulier d’un locuteur vis-à-vis de son interlocuteur. The third sex, which for a long period of history meant the androgyne and the homosexual, took on a new sense around 1900, when it was applied to emancipated women, who were featured by novelists and analysed by psychiatrists. Assimilated with lesbians, 'desexualized' by their modern way of life, they were labelled 'neuter', worker bees in a hive-state where 'female–male' markers were tending to disappear. Neither men in sex, nor women in gender (at least according to traditional assumptions), they constituted (...) a new 'battalion' which highlighted all the anxieties of the time: the involution of dimorphism, the threat of lack of differentiation and the 'extinction of the race'. But for those who accepted the label, neuterdom evolved from a pejorative concept into an instrument of a kind of liberation and the strategic means to set up creative space cleared of sexual stigma, until political cooption, aware of the resurgence of a 'superior species', changed its meaning and tipped over into the worst sort of excess. L’extension de la négociation collective pendant la première moitié du xxe siècle accompagne la généralisation des grilles de salaires suivant la qualification du travail. Ces dernières représentent un acquis ambigu pour les ouvrières. L’élaboration des grilles rend visible la variété et la qualification des tâches exécutées par les femmes. Elle coïncide avec une politique de revalorisation salariale qui permet de réduire l’écart avec les salaires masculins. Mais elle entérine également les frontières sexuelles de la division du travail. L’examen des négociations (...) entreprises laisse voir le jeu complexe des stratégies déployées par les acteurs impliqués dans la définition et l’évaluation de la qualification. L’État et les syndicats ouvriers ne s’engagent que tardivement dans la promotion de la qualification féminine. (shrink)

Le point de départ de cet ouvrage est l'hypothèse d'un courant majoritaire, quasi hégémonique, instruisant les manières de penser les crises du monde. Il s'agit donc premièrement d'enquêter sur ce mode d'analyse dominant, d'en tracer la généalogie, d'en révéler le modèle initial présidant à sa diffusion, à sa généralisation présumée dans les pratiques et les discours. Deuxièmement, d'en discuter l'adéquation en ce qui concerne les crises du monde social, ce qui revient à interroger les ressorts des discours spécialisés dans leur (...) analyse : sciences sociales et journalisme. Si le critère de scientificité et de validité que représente l'adéquation à la nature de l'objet étudié n'est pas satisfait, interrogeons-nous sur ce qui fonde leur validité : effets et impacts sociopolitiques des analyses dominantes des crises du monde. The ABO histo‐blood group, first discovered over a century ago, is found not only in humans but also in many other primate species, with the same genetic variants maintained for at least 20 million years. Polymorphisms in ABO have been associated with susceptibility to a large number of human diseases, from gastric cancers to immune or artery diseases, but the adaptive phenotypes to which the polymorphism contributes remain unclear. We suggest that variation in ABO has been maintained by frequency‐dependent or (...) fluctuating selection pressures, potentially arising from co‐evolution with gut pathogens. We further hypothesize that the histo‐blood group labels A, B, AB, and O do not offer a full description of variants maintained by natural selection, implying that there are unrecognized, functionally important, antigens beyond the ABO group in humans and other primates. Is there a link between how a firm manages its internal and external stakeholders? More specifically, are firms that give employees stock ownership and more say in running the enterprise more likely to engage with external stakeholders? This study seeks to answer these questions by elaborating on mechanisms that link employees to external stakeholders, such as the community, suppliers, and the environment. It tests these relationships using a sample of 347 private, mostly small-to-medium size firms, which completed a stakeholder impact (...) assessment organized by the non-profit B Lab. The results support the hypotheses that both employee ownership and employee involvement are positively associated with external stakeholder engagement. Further, we found that certification plays a role, as employee ownership contributes to external stakeholder engagement only in certified B Corporations, and not in firms that merely completed the B Lab Impact assessment. Our findings have import for stakeholder engagement frameworks, as we show that there is interplay between internal employee stakeholders and external stakeholders that may be important to overall firm–stakeholder management. L’Europe s’est érigée ces dernières décennies en forteresse qu’il est de plus en plus difficile d’atteindre pour les personnes en migration. L’enfermement en est devenu l’instrument central de gestion des personnes étrangères dans le cadre du contrôle des frontières. Au niveau français, la zone d’attente est, depuis plus de 30 ans, l’outil essentiel de l’enfermement aux frontières. Alors qu’elle est source de nombreuses violations des droits humains et qu’elle criminalise les personnes étrangères, la zone d’attente a pourtant été déclinée au (...) niveau européen dans le cadre du Pacte sur la migration et l’asile en 2024. Le présent article a pour objectif de comprendre les enjeux de l’expansion du régime d’enfermement aux frontières « à la française » à l’Union européenne, en analysant le régime de la zone d’attente et les conséquences qu’il a sur les personnes qui en sont victimes. Despite decades of development, Actor-Network Theory continues to be characterized by a good deal of ambiguities and internal tensions. This situation has led to a suggestion that instead of one ANT it may be meaningful to speak of ‘the ANT multiple’. Following this line of reasoning, this article aims to create a map of the variety of positions riding under the ANT banner. Based on an in-depth reading of ANT literature, seven different interpretations of ANT are identified and subjected to (...) critical analysis while accommodating for the concerns of ANT proponents about the way ANT has been previously criticized. The results of the analysis serve to increase the reflexivity of both sides of the debate about their underlying assumptions, and provide suggestions how ANT could be employed, developed and criticized more productively in the future. Si, comme la précédente, elle préconise trois séances annuelles, elle innove avec une articulation entre trois champs de compétences : biologique, psycho-émotionnel et juridico-social.
