The Structure of Political Thought: A Study in the History of Political Ideas.N. R. McCoy Charles & M. Neumayr Thomas - 2017 - Routledge.
Originally published in 1963, this classic book is a rethinking of the history of Western political philosophy. Charles N. R. McCoy contrasts classical-medieval principles against the "hypotheses" at the root of modern liberalism and modern conservativism. In Part I, "The Classical Christian Tradition from Plato to Aquinas," the author lays the foundation for a philosophical "structure" capable of producing "constitutional liberty." Part II, "The Modern Theory of Politics from Machiavelli to Marx," attempts to show, beginning with Machiavelli, the reversal (...)

    Giulio Castellani (1528-1586): A Sixteenth-Century Opponent of Scepticism.Charles B. Schmitt - 1967 - Journal of the History of Philosophy 5 (1):15-39.
In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:Giulio Castellani (1528-1586): A Sixteenth-Century Opponent of Scepticism CHARLES B. SCH1VHTT THE PROBLEMOF THE ORIGINS of scepticism in early modern philosophy has been a much debated issue. Sanches, Montaigne, Charron, and Bayle all contributed to the milieu which made it possible for the sceptical direction of thought to develop into such a potent force by the time of David Hume. The actual origins of modern scepticism, which seem (...)

De raisonnables désaccords.Charles E. Larmore - 2022 - Paris: Les Petits Platons. Edited by Pierre Fasula.

  8. Maimonides and Jewish theocracy: the human hand of divine rule.Charles H. T. Lesch - 2024 - New York, NY, USA: Cambridge University Press.
Theocratic movements are on the rise. But what does it actually mean for God to rule? This study offers one answer by recovering the theocratic project of medieval Judaism's most important thinker, Moses Maimonides. Theocracy is often thought to quash human agency, evoking an overpowering deity and clerical domination. Yet, by reconsidering Maimonides' debt to the Islamic philosopher al-Fārābī, and challenging Leo Strauss' influential reading, I argue that among Maimonides' aims was to elevate humanity's role in divine rule. In its (...)

    Bioethics and modern techniques in genetics.Charles Susanne - 1997 - Global Bioethics 10 (1-4):65-90.
To refuse new knowledge and new technologies is at long term a lost battle: this general constatation may, without doubt, be extrapolated to genetic engineering. The influence fundamental science-applied science is always mutual. Such as is also the influence science-society. If the genetics influences the society, the society influences the genetics and the sciences of the reproduction. The goal is indeed nowadays to have a limited number of children, and to offer a life of quality with minimal sufferings. Without doubt these (...)

Current status of transpersonal psychology.Charles Tart - 2006 - Journal of Consciousness Studies 13 (4):83-87.
Anthony Freeman, in his stimulating and valuable article 'A Daniel Come to Judgment? Dennett and the Revisioning of Transpersonal Theory' in the last issue of this journal (Freeman, 2006), outlines the current state of transpersonal psychology, noting theoretical problems, and speculating on how Dennett's heterophenomenology might help in understanding the transpersonal. The reader who is not well acquainted with transpersonal psychology, however, may come away from this article with the feeling that the field is rife with inherent contradictions and is (...)

    Intuitionism and logical syntax.Charles McCarty - 2008 - Philosophia Mathematica 16 (1):56-77.
, Rudolf Carnap became a chief proponent of the doctrine that the statements of intuitionism carry nonstandard intuitionistic meanings. This doctrine is linked to Carnap's ‘Principle of Tolerance’ and claims he made on behalf of his notion of pure syntax. From premises independent of intuitionism, we argue that the doctrine, the Principle, and the attendant claims are mistaken, especially Carnap's repeated insistence that, in defining languages, logicians are free of commitment to mathematical statements intuitionists would reject. I am grateful to (...)

William Tait's standing in the philosophy of mathematics hardly needs to be argued for; for this reason the appearance of this collection is especially welcome. As noted in his Preface, the essays in this book ‘span the years 1981–2002’. The years given are evidently those of publication. One essay was not previously published in its present form, but it is a reworking of papers published during that period. The Introduction, one appendix, and some notes are new. Many of the essays (...)
