Erfahrung und Urteil: Untersuchungen zur Genealogie der Logik.Edmund Husserl - 1999 - Meiner, F.

  4. Logical Investigations Volume 2.Edmund Husserl - 2001 - Routledge.
Edmund Husserl is the founder of phenomenology and the Logical Investigations is his most famous work. It had a decisive impact on twentieth century philosophy and is one of few works to have influenced both continental and analytic philosophy. This is the first time both volumes have been available in paperback. They include a new introduction by Dermot Moran, placing the Investigations in historical context and bringing out their contemporary philosophical importance. These editions include a new preface by Sir (...)

Professionalism: One Size Does Not Fit All.Edmund G. Howe - 2015 - Journal of Clinical Ethics 26 (1):3-15.
When a child is born with or acquires special needs, the parents may find some parental tasks more difficult. They may not know how to make their tasks easier, or that some parents find it exceptionally rewarding and meaningful to raise their children with special needs. This piece explores how clinicians might share this potentially life-altering information. It also explores when and why clinicians might want to make one-of-a-kind exceptions to their usual professional practices.

The Functions of the Orbitofrontal Cortex.Edmund T. Rolls - 2002 - In Donald T. Stuss & Robert T. Knight (eds.), Principles of Frontal Lobe Function. Oxford University Press.
This chapter considers the functions of the orbitofrontal cortex. It shows that the orbitofrontal cortex is involved in decoding and representing some primary reinforcers such as taste and touch; in learning and reversing associations of visual and other stimuli to these primary reinforcers; in controlling and correcting reward-related and punishment-related behavior; and, thus, in emotion.

Language, Soil, and “Jewish” Alienation in Levinas and Adorno.Edmund Chapman - 2023 - Diacritics 51 (1):50-73.
Emmanuel Levinas and Theodor Adorno are both post-Shoah philosophers who experienced refugeedom. In different contexts, both discuss the question of a linkage between language and soil, and ultimately show that the distinction between the native and the foreign is untenable. I suggest that Levinas’s evocation of linguistic soil illustrates his understanding of Jewishness as defined by a ceding of ground, thus showing that Levinas’s thought relies on a conception of ground in order to then reject it. Adorno, in evoking a (...)

What produces emotions? Why do we have emotions? How do we have emotions? Why do emotional states feel like something? The Brain, Emotion, and Depression addresses these issues and more, providing a unified approach to emotion, reward value, economic value, decision-making, and their brain mechanisms.

  23. What are Emotional States, and Why Do We Have Them?Edmund T. Rolls - 2013 - Emotion Review 5 (3):241-247.
An approach to emotion is described in which emotions are defined as states elicited by instrumental reinforcers, that is, by stimuli that are the goals for action. This leads to a theory of the evolutionary adaptive value of emotions, which is that different genes specify different goals in their own self-interest, and any actions can then be learned and performed by instrumental learning to obtain the goals. The brain mechanisms for emotion in brain regions such as the orbitofrontal and anterior (...)

    Ethics and jurisprudence for dentists.Edmund Noyes - 1915 - Chicago,: Tucker-Kenworthy.
This early work on dentistry is both expensive and hard to find in its first edition. It contains details on professional ethics and jurisprudence for the dentist. This is a fascinating work and thoroughly recommended for dentists and dental students. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

    Tyranny in Tragedy.Edmund Stewart - 2023 - Polis 40 (2):234-258.
The meaning of the word tyrannos in Greek tragedy is much debated. Some have assumed that the word is always a neutral term signifying ‘ruler’ alone. Others argue for competing ideologies regarding tyranny: the result of an evolution in thinking on autocracy. This article challenges both of these assumptions. The negative meaning of tyrannos is always latent in tragedy, even where the word is used objectively and not as a term of abuse. Tyrannos does not simply indicate a powerful individual (...)

    How Clinicians Can Reduce “Bullied Acquiescence”.Edmund G. Howe - 2016 - Journal of Clinical Ethics 27 (1):3-13.
Clinicians and patients and their families may disagree about a course of treatment, and the ensuing conflict may seem intractable. The parties may request mediation, or use mediation-based approaches, to help resolve the conflict. In the process of mediation, and at other times, parties in conflict may feel so pressured to accept a resolution that they acquiesce unwillingly—and such resolutions often unravel. In this article I investigate how “bullied acquiescence” might happen, and how to avoid it.

Questions Care Providers Should Ask When They Have Ethical Discretion.Edmund G. Howe - 2023 - Journal of Clinical Ethics 34 (1):5-10.
Since some care providers give colleagues’ interests priority over patients’ and families’, they are at risk of imposing their bias on patients without knowing this. In this piece I discuss how the risk increases when care providers have greater discretion and how they can best avoid this risk. I discuss identifying these situations, assessing them, and then, based on what they have concluded, intervening and use their having inadequate resources, their seeing what patients want as futile, and their making decisions (...)

    Seeing the Invisible.Edmund G. Howe - 2022 - Journal of Clinical Ethics 33 (2):81-91.
This article focuses on three different ways that we may demean people by seeing them as less than they are, and describes ways we may best avoid doing this. More specifically, I explain how we may not see the physical and emotional issues that plague patients and others. This may be because they choose not to disclose their difficulties to us. We may also err when we see only one aspect of who and how others are. These challenges pose ethical (...)

    When Should Careproviders Deviate from Consensus?Edmund G. Howe - 2022 - Journal of Clinical Ethics 33 (3):165-174.
Consensus documents may be extremely helpful. They may, however, also do harm. They may, for example, suggest interventions that are less than optimal, especially when they apply to patients whose situations are at the “outer margins” of their applicability. Yet, even in these instances, clinicians and ethics consultants may still feel pressure to comply with a guideline. Then, we may not do what we think is best for our particular patient because we fear departing from a guideline. In this article (...)
