In den letzten Jahren hat das theoretische und praktische Interesse an Diagrammen stark zugenommen. Kultur- und Bildwissenschaft, Philosophie, Medientheorie, Gestaltung und Kognitionsforschung sind gleichermaßen am epistemischen Gebrauch diagrammatischer Bild- und Denkformen interessiert. Bislang gibt es jedoch keine gemeinsame Lektürebasis, die die Diskussionen zu diesem Thema bündelt. This essay concentrates on the reception of Oswald Spengler's book, „Der Untergang des Abendlandes” by German Protestant theologians in the early 1920s, who were more susceptible to the influence of this book than were philosophers. Just after the First World War, for example, Werner Elert, Karl Heim and Ernst Troeltsch – not to mention Emanuel Hirsch, Friedrich Gogarten and others – had to cope with deeply interconnected crises in faith, church, theology and nation. Spengler's idea of cycles in history (...) seemed to help them understand Germany's 1918 defeat not as due to military exhaustion but to a sort of divine destiny. But it also gave hope that this destiny would help to overcome the crisis. The authors drew epon certain aspects of Spengler's thinking to establish their theory of Christianity. However, the influence of Spengler vanished soon enough. As a result, the story of his reception is an example of the struggle to locate Christianity within post-war German society. (shrink)

Wegen der engen Symbiose zwischen Mutter und Kind, die charakteristisch für die Schwangerschaft ist, können sich Interessenskonflikte zwischen den beiden Individuen entwickeln. Konflikte, bedingt durch die Bedrohung der mütterlichen Gesundheit einerseits und das Recht des Fetus auf Leben, stellen Ausnahmesituationen dar und können in der Regel ohne Opferung der Fetus gelöst werden. Bei unerwünschten Schwangerschaften stellt sich die Frage nach der Priorität von dem Recht der Mutter auf Autonomie und Wahrung ihrer psychosozialen Gesundheit und dem Recht auf Leben des Fetus. Auch die frühzeitige Diagnose eines kranken Fetus mit Aussicht auf ein schwerbehindertes Kind kann – bedingt durch die psychische Belastung – als Bedrohung der mütterlichen Gesundheit aufgefaßt werden. Die gesetzlichen Vorgaben zur Lösung dieser Konflikte variieren zwischen verschiedenen Ländern und unterliegen ihrerseits Anpassungen und Veränderungen. In Anbetracht der verschiedenen kulturellen und religiösen Einflüsse moderner Gesellschaften kann es keinen übergreifenden Konsens zur Lösung dieser Konflikte geben, und die Entscheidung wird im Einzelfall in Abhängigkeit von den moralischen und religiösen Auffassungen der Betroffenen unter Beachtung der rechtlichen Rahmenbedingungen gefällt. In der Schweiz ist nach wie vor eines der ältesten und restriktivsten Gesetze über den Schwangerschaftsabbruch gültig, das eine Unterbrechung nur in Situationen ernsthafter Bedrohung des Lebens oder der Gesundheit der Mutter nach entsprechender Bestätigung durch einen medizinischen Fachexperten zuläßt. Die Anwendung bzw. die Auslegung des Gesetzes hat in den letzten 50 Jahre eine erhebliche Ausweitung erfahren und in der Mehrzahl der Kantone wird die psychosoziale Notlage im Zusammenhang mit einer unerwünschten Schwangerschaft als ernste Bedrohung der Gesundheit der Mutter akzeptiert, so daß der Schwangerschaftsabbrucht straffrei ist. Dem Parlament liegt eine neue Initiative zur Anpassung des Gesetzes an die herrschende Rechtspraxis vor, in dem der straffreie Schwangerschaftsabbruch bis zu 14 Wochen nach der letzten Periode auf Wunsch der Frau gefordert wird. Jenseits dieses Zeitpunkt wird dem Recht des Fetus auf Leben zunehmend Gewicht eingeräumt, so daß die Priorität des Rechtes der Mutter auf Autonomie und Selbstbestimmung nicht mehr gegeben ist. Der Schwangerschaftsabbruch beschränkt sich jenseits von 14 Wochen in der Regel auf Fälle mit schwerer nachgewiesener Pathologie des Fetus. Nach Erreichen der extrauterinen Lebensfähigkeit des Fetus (22–24 Wo-chen) wird der Abbruch auch bei nachgewiesener Pathologie des Fetus zunehmend restriktiv gehandhabt und beschränkt sich auf die Fälle mit schwerer Pathologie ohne Aussicht auf ein extrauterines Überleben oder ein Minimum an kognitiver Entwicklungsfähigkeit wie etwa bei Trisomie 13, 18, Anencephalus oder beidseitiger Nierenagenesie.Durch die Fortschritte der pränatalen Diagnostik ist eine präzise Abklärung fetaler Erkrankungen mit detaillierter Beurteilung der Prognose möglich. Die Methoden der Molekularbiologie ermöglichen den Nachweis oder Ausschluß von genetischen Erkrankungen wie auch von Virusbefall fetaler Zellen, so daß die Entscheidung für einen Schwangerschaftsabbruch in diesen Fällen nicht mehr auf Grund von Wahrscheinlichkeitsangaben, sondern abgestützt auf den definitiven Nachweis diskutiert werden kann.Die fetalen Erkrankungen, die einer intrauterinen Behandlung zugängig sind, bilden eine zunehmend länger werdende Liste, die mit der Transfusion von Blut bei Hämolyse wegen Rhesusinkompatibilität begonnen hat. Dazu kommt eine Reihe chirurgischer Eingriffe wie die Laserkoagulation kommunizierender Gefäße beim Zwillingstransfusionssyndrom oder die Ableitung von Flüssigkeit aus verschiedenen Körperhöhlen des Fetus in die Amnionhöhle. Diese Eingriffe werden unter Ultraschallsicht durchgeführt. Größere Eingriffe, die eine Eröffnung des Uterus erforderlich machen, beschränken sich auf Zwerchfellhernien, die Entfernung großer Teratome sowie auch die Behebung obstruktiver Uropathien. Die Erfolgsrate dieser invasiven Eingriffe, die nur in wenigen Zentren durchgeführt werden, bleibt begrenzt. Medizinische Behandlungen des Fetus können durch Verabreichung von Medikamenten an die Mutter mit transplazentarem Übertritt zu dem Fetus oder durch direkte Injektion in Nabelschnurgefäße erfolgen. Die häufigste Indikation stellen Tachyarrhythmien mit Herzinsuffizienz des Fetus dar. (shrink)

(Athens, Ohio: Ohio University Press, 1966. Pp. lx + 353. $7.00.) This expansion of the theme outlined in Professor Easton's article of 1962 gives us fulllength accounts of the careers and ideas of four picturesque characters of the Ohio River Valley during the 19th century. The four had little in common except Hegel, and even him they did not really share, for they interpreted him differently and used him for different interests. The author is somewhat generous in calling them "Hegelians" and "followers" of Hegel, for like practically all those Americans who have been influenced by Hegel, they followed him at a safe distance and not very long. But this diversity makes Easton's account all the more fascinating. He portrays not only four characters but also the culture of Cincinati and its environment. J. B. Stallo is better known among American historians and philosophers than the other three, and deservedly so, for he was more philosophical. But he gains in stature here, noteworthy not only for his philosophy of nature but also as a prominent citizen, judge of a Superior Court, and political leader of a large German community. Stallo had two very different careers: the early Catholic student and teacher of Oken's philosophy of nature, mixed liberally with Schelling's similar system and with Hegel's Encyclopedia and his Phenomenology. Emerson was probably right in getting out of Stallo's General Principles an idea of "nature's rhythmic unfolding" rather than an idea of historical dialectic. Then came the later Stallo (after 1855), a convert from Catholicism and transcendentalism to empiricism, and a devoted follower of Ernst Mach. It is this later Stallo, author in 1881 of The Concepts and Theories oJ Modern Physics, who is better known, and who used the term "relativity" to indicate that physics deals not with things-in-themselves but with the data given to observers. Peter Kaufmann is an excellent representative of those pietists who, when they came to the open spaces and free manners of America, made serious attempts to give their religious "perfectionism" a practical social embodiment in utopian, communal economies. He became a teacher in the Rappite "Community of Equality and Social Harmony" and after a few years founded his own "Society of Germans at Teutonia." The members of this society agreed to devote their communal surplus to the education of orphans, the conversion of Indians, the spreading of the Gospel to "the four corners of the earth", and publishing a weekly Herald o] Better Times. After four years of this Society he moved northward to Canton, Ohio, where he settled down comfortably as a publisher and promoter of public education. His major publication, The Temple oJ Truth, incorporated some ideas on dialectic taken from Hegel. He continued his contacts with many utopian communities and urged his fellow citizens to help in making the United States of America "a saviour nation of the rest of mankind." Moncure Conway, a native of Virginia and graduate of Dickinson College, became an itinerant Methodist minister. But in 1853 the Harvard Divinity School made a Unitarian of him and an enthusiast for the higher criticism of Strauss and the transcendentalism of Hegel. In 1858 his wife introduced him to her home town, Cincinnati, and there he became BOOK REVIEWS 379 the minister of a very influential and liberal congregation. Neben einer begrifflichen, methodischen und inhaltlichen Klärung, was aus interkultureller Sicht bedeutet, werden in den verschiedenen Beiträgen ethische und politische Ansätze im heutigen Weltkontext der Philosophie erörtert. Interkulturell orientiertes philosophisches Denken weist alle Zentrismen zurück, ohne jedoch die jeweilige kulturelle Sedimentiertheit in Frage zu stellen. Folgerichtig wird so auch ein jeder Monismus abgelehnt. Das heutige Angesprochensein der Kulturen verlangt von uns, von den beiden Fiktionen einer totalen (...) Identität und völligen Differenz unter den ethischen und politischen Modellen Abschied zu nehmen. Die These von der Überlappung zielt auf das Wahrnehmen von grundsätzlichen Ähnlichkeiten und erhellenden Differenzen in den Ansätzen. Wer einen Pluralismus bejaht, muß auch bereit sein, im Geiste der Toleranz die unterschiedlichen Ansätze zur Ethik und Politik ernst zu nehmen. Wer den Konsens zu sehr betont, liebäugelt mit irgendeinem Identitätsmodell, vernachlässigt den Kompromiß. Tatsache ist jedoch, daß gerade Kompromisse zur Konfliktlösung beitragen. So sind die Beiträge dieses Bandes dem Ziel gewidmet, sowohl eine theoretische Begründung als auch eine praktische Bewältigung der interkulturellen Verständigung in Ethik und Politik zu leisten. The famous debate between Ernst Cassirer and Martin Heidegger of 1929 in Davos was set on a global stage and, yet, inherently Eurocentric. This volume explores how the hypothetical presence of the Kyoto school founder Nishida Kitarō would have overcome this limitation.

What does it mean to be human? We invite the reader to discuss this most fundamental issue in philosophy and to do so in an intercultural framework. The question of the human was the starting point for a legendary discussion between two German philosophers who met in Davos in 1929. We return to this historical event and re-imagine the debate between Martin Heidegger and Ernst Cassirer from a global perspective. Generating twenty papers from elaborate discussions, our authors contribute to (...) the thought experiment by inviting the Japanese philosopher Nishida Kitarō from Kyoto and other Japanese thinkers into the debate to overcome the challenge of Eurocentrism inherent to these historic days in Davos. In her 1921 book, The Space-Time Problem in Kant and Einstein, Ilse Schneider examines the foundations and consequences of the theory of relativity from an epistemological perspective. Beyond addressing detailed questions of early 1920s physics, it is a programmatic attempt to reconcile Kant’s transcendental idealism with Albert Einstein’s physics. The Kantian background puts the book in direct competition with Ernst Cassirer’s book Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, published in the same year. Schneider’s approach was largely ignored in the (...) research compared with Cassirer’s. What has not been considered so far is that Schneider and Cassirer represent two different interpretations of Kant, which they apply to Einstein’s physics. Recent Kant scholarship has differentiated these interpretations into the “metaphysical” and “epistemological dual-aspect” views. The former view can be found in the work of Schneider’s academic supervisor, Alois Riehl, and clearly distinguishes Schneider’s realist-inspired approach from Cassirer’s idealism. Given these differing views, it is necessary to be more precise when speaking of “immunization strategies” in the context of neo-Kantianism in order to make the differences between Schneider and Cassirer clear. Cassirer immunizes philosophy from the results of physics. In contrast, Schneider exposes philosophy much more strongly to physics. (shrink)

The symbol is a form composed by man more unconsciously than consciously. With primitive peoples, this form seems to have been born from the desire to penetrate to the kernel of supernatural or magical power by means of a concise formula, all-inclusive or ambiguous, particularly through a magic incantation or a song. This penetration, however, is only possible if one understands the inner structure of such a power. According to primitive belief, the true seat of this power is not found (...) in the world of our direct experience but in a magical area in which it rests in a completely abstract, latent state. In this condition it has not yet spread out into various shapes which it has to assume for concrete manifestation but appears completely homogeneous and solid. Moreover, the innermost substance (kernel) of this power is always organized antinomically. From this fundamental tendency to include opposites in a dualistic way, thunderstorms for example emerge as a dual combination of fire and water. Also dualistic is the “fiery stream of volcano and smithy,” the light-dark, hermaphroditism, etc. Psychologically, the original dual event is expressed in the fusion of love and hatred or the combination of a lust for power with inferiority. Eu creio que devemos agradecer a Heidegger por nos ter claramente colocado, diante de nossos olhos, o verdadeiro “acontecimento” filosófico, que se consuma na fundamentação da filosofia de Kant, de modo que tal acontecimento torna-se visível na totalidade de sua força interna e em seu ímpeto. Mas, me parece que ele não percorreu a totalidade da esfera da problemática do “idealismo transcendental”.

The discovery of emotional value in conceptual history Resumen: Este artículo aborda histórica y metodológicamente la cuestión del papel atribuido a las emociones en la investigación de la historia conceptual. No se trata, por tanto, de la historia de la metaconceptualización de las emociones ni de la historia de las propias emociones. Me gustaría rastrear una vertiente conceptual de la larga prehistoria de la historia de los conceptos y la semántica histórica, a saber, la del concepto de valor emocional. Junto (...) a este concepto, la atención se centra también en la carga sentimental y afectiva de los conceptos, que no puede describirse con predicados semánticos, pero que es esencialmente responsable de la posición de los conceptos en el discurso, de su ascenso y decadencia. Mi impresión es que tanto el concepto como el problema del valor emocional de un término han ido retrocediendo en la historia conceptual koselleckiana. En el artículo también se presentan las consideraciones de por qué esto es así.: This article approaches historically and methodologically the question of the role attributed to emotions in conceptual history research. It is therefore neither about the history of the metaconceptualization of emotions nor about the history of emotions themselves. I would like to trace one conceptual strand of the long prehistory of the history of concepts and historical semantics, namely that of the concept of emotional value. Alongside this concept, attention is also focused on the sentimental and affective charge of concepts, which cannot be described by semantic predicates, but which is essentially responsible for the position of concepts in discourse, for their rise and decline. My impression is that both the concept and the problem of the emotional value of a term have been receding in Koselleckian conceptual history. : The paper presents some mathematical aspects of the question of reducibility of relations. After giving a formal definition of reducibility we present the basic result (due to Herzberger) to the effect that relations of valency at least 3 are always reducible if the cardinality of the relation is at most equal to the cardinality of the underlying set (which is automatically the case if this set is infinite). In contrast to this, if the term "reduction" is given a practicable (...) form, relations on finite sets are "generically" irreducible, as is shown by a simple counting argument. Next we discuss the question of an "intrinsic" criterion for reducibility. Finally we propose a scheme for the graphic representation of reductions. (shrink)

Ernst Cassirers 1932 erschienene Darstellung der »Philosophie der Aufklärung« zählt zu den herausragenden Standardwerken zur Bestimmung der Leitgedanken der Epoche. »Die eigentliche ›Philosophie‹ der Aufklärung ist und bleibt«, so Cassirer, »etwas anderes als der Inbegriff dessen, was ihre führenden Denker [...] gedacht und gelehrt haben«. Entsprechend sah er das auszeichnende Merkmal seiner historischen Rekonstruktion der Epoche darin, »daß sie nicht die Geschichte der einzelnen Denker und ihrer Lehren, sondern eine reine Geschichte der Ideen der Aufklärungszeit zu geben suchte, und (...) daß sie diese Ideen selbst nicht nur in ihrer abstrakt-theoretischen Fassung darlegen, sondern in ihrer unmittelbaren Wirksamkeit aufzeigen und sichtbar machen wollte«.
