Eu estava no campinho de futebol da casa dos meus pais, os quero-queros tinham feito ninho e seus três filhotes pequenos estavam aprendendo a comer bicando lá sei eu o quê numa parte mais úmida, onde nas chuvas corria uma fonte. Quando os quero-queros faziam ninho, cessavam todas as peladas. Não havia nem discussão, afinal eles moravam aí antes de chegarem os humanos, o terreno era deles, nós éramos os invasores. Ter uma noção mais clara sobre o que possa ser a verdade é central não só para a ciência, também não só para a filosofia, mas também para a arte. Há uma longa tradição filosófica que diz, com Aquino, que o belo é o resplendor da verdade ou, com Hegel, que o belo é a aparição sensível da ideia. Para o idealismo alemão, a ideia tinha de ser verdadeira, pois se não ela seria apenas um palpite infeliz. Como a verdade (...) permite distinguir o que é justo e correto, o que vale e o que não tem valor, ela também é central para a vida das pessoas, para as grandes decisões que precisam tomar e para a estruturação do seu dia a dia. A mímese foi fundante na tradição judaico-cristã por causa da crença de que Jeová teria feito o homem “à sua imagem e semelhança”. Isso poderia ter sido entendido que o homem teria sido feito semelhante a si mesmo, mas ele preferiu acreditar que era parecido com Deus. Não entendeu que a divindade poderia ser parecida com ele, uma projeção cósmica. Descartes observou que Deus e homem seriam antitéticos: um seria eterno, o outro finito; um onisciente, outro de parco saber; um (...) todo poderoso, outro de poucas forças; um onipresente, outro estando em um só lugar. A vaidade se sobrepõe à racionalidade. (shrink)

Pascal assegura que acima de tudo ele preza a honestidade, mas tem um pensamento curto que diz “poète, et non honnête homme”. A ficção seria uma desonestidade. Outro pensamento comenta o provérbio latino “in vino veritas”, dizendo que é preciso não haver vinho demais nem vinho de menos para buscar a verdade. Se o vinho é o acesso ao subconsciente, isso significa que é preciso ampliar a racionalidade para além do âmbito consciente. Será que Pascal, saindo da ciência e se (...) tornando monge católico, era honesto a ponto de acusar os poetas de serem desonestos, por que não ver antes a desonestidade nas crenças? "A arte que servisse para enaltecer a grandeza dos senhores e mostrar a baixeza dos escravos estava aí dentro dos padrões da “veritas aestheticologica”. Isso pode ser comprovado em Aristófanes e Plauto, como em Homero e Platão. O cristianismo contrapôs a tese de que todos os humanos teriam alma, mas soube conviver com a escravidão durante séculos, inclusive sacramentando-a como vontade divina (baseando na suposta maldição de Noé). Baudelaire fez, porém, no poema sobre “A raça de Caim”, a inversão do (...) discurso bíblico. Quando se fala sobre a escravidão antiga, parece que o problema não nos afeta: nosso “correto” não vê o assalariado, o desempregado e quem vive de bicos como escravos modernos, mais baratos que os antigos. Fala-se em fake, mas não se admite que milagres de Cristo ou hagiografias de santos poderiam ser fakes também. As religiões treinaram, no entanto, os políticos no sentido de esperarem que se acredite no que dizem, por mais absurdo que seja. Com que concepção de verdade se tem operado? É possível “operar” com ela, como se coisa fosse, um instrumento? Ou ela nos é, nos abrimos à verdade que em nós assoma e se torna palavra e imagem?

A Estética deriva de uma crença que pode conter um erro grave, nos fundamentos, e toda sua edificação pode afundar. Oriunda da metafísica psicológica, ela pressupõe que o homem se divida em corpo e alma, como instâncias separáveis, tendo a alma prioridade por ser imutável, eterna e independente do corpo. Assim como a Lógica cuidaria das ilações da alma em termos analíticos, a Estética cuidaria das percepções corporais, das imagens corpóreas. Essa concepção cristã está presente em Descartes, Leibniz, Wolff, Baumgarten, (...) Kant, Fichte, Solger, Hegel e vários outros. (shrink)

This paper presents a dynamic perspective in which the psychological contract is treated as a structured set of beliefs that are held by individual employees about the mutual obligations of the organization as employer and themselves as employees. This set of beliefs is assumed to produce a state of commitment to the organization in which the employee is willing to accept work roles and tasks offered by the organization, and to carry them out in accordance with certain standards. The dynamic (...) model that is presented can help to explain why the commitment of employees remains relatively stable over time, and why it may suddenly decrease or increase under circumstances that are perceived as critical by the employee. The model assumes that the employee's evaluation of the organization's behavior changes over time, but that the structure of the psychological contract and the associated commitment change only when certain limits are overstepped. This perspective on changes in the psychological contract transforms the concept into a powerful construct that may lead to fruitful research on the dynamics of organization-employee relationships. Implications for future research are discussed. (shrink)

Theory of Literature was originally published in 1949. It is not a textbook introducing the young to the elements of literary appreciation nor a survey of the techniques employed in scholarly research. The authors have sought to unite "poetics" (or literary theory) and "criticism" (evaluation of literature) with "scholarship" ("research") and "literary history" (the "dynamics"of literature, in contrast to the "statics" of theory and criticism).

David Hollenbach’s introduction explains how the book brings together Christian (mostly Catholic) theologians, human rights activists, humanitarian practitioners, and legal scholars to help us focus on a class of persons referred to as “forced migrants” or “persons needing protection.” These individuals are neither classical “convention refugees” (according to international law definitions) nor are they simply “migrant workers” (in the classical sense) since their basic human rights to security and subsistence cannot [End Page 230] be adequately guaranteed in their home country or region. They do not emigrate merely in search of a higher standard of living; rather, forced migrants enter and settle in foreign lands seeking some sort of “protection” similar to that afforded to “conventional” refugees. More concretely, the book focuses on persons on the move—individuals fleeing violence and the extreme poverty rampant in regions devastated by ecological degradation and natural disasters.Extending the logic of the 1952 Refugee Convention and adapting it to the realities of today, one can argue convincingly that the international community has a duty to protect such persons when their states of origin are structurally unable or unwilling to afford protection (as argued in Susan Martin’s essay). However, paternalistic approaches that diminish rather than augment the agency of local governments and migrants are to be avoided (as maintained in M. Brinton Lykes’ essay). The book helps us reflect on what can be done to guarantee the basic rights of forced migrants not only at the level of international law and institutions but also through domestic and regional policymaking spurred and inspired by both Christian and secular global-humanitarian values. Such values are eminently compatible when applied to this particular issue (see Silvano Tomasi’s contribution). Agbonkhianmeghe Orobator’s essay—which offers insightful reflections (albeit rather general ones) from Christian ethics, ecclesiology, and biblical theology—likewise points to the need for a truly interdisciplinary approach to the issue. The other authors help the book achieve precisely this. Theological ethics finds its own distinctive place and voice in dialogue with a range of perspectives: legal and political sciences and case studies (Frank Brennan, Daniel Kanstroom); philosophical approaches (Arash Abizadeh); and sociological research on particular migrant populations (M. Brinton Lykes, Maryanne Loughry). The book includes essays that integrate case studies, technical reflections, useful summaries of theological principles and doctrines (J. Bryan Hehir, Mary M. DeLorey, and Tomasi), and philosophical stances (Abizadeh, Thomas G. Weiss), and present practical and legal proposals (see Martin’s essay). A stimulating read for scholars and for the general public, the volume provides good training material for faith-based activists and practitioners.The argumentation strategy in many of the essays in Driven from Home is to appeal to the reader’s sense of solidarity with the needy or suffering neighbor. It promotes the virtues of hospitable citizenship and hospitable disciple-ship while carefully trying to convince national and international policymakers to reinforce and expand the international protection regime. Emboldened by the 2005 “Responsibility to Protect” breakthrough at the United Nations, the authors seek to remain acceptable to a wide audience in an atmosphere of resurgent nationalism, nativism, and protectionism. The authors generally avoid harsh critiques of Westphalian models of sovereignty and do not dwell [End Page 231] on the Catholic doctrines of the universal destination of created goods and the (circumscribed) right to immigrate (and not only to emigrate).
