    On Women Englishing Homer.Richard Hughes Gibson - 2019 - Arion 26 (3):35-68.
In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:On Women Englishing Homer RICHARD HUGHES GIBSON Seven kingdoms strove in which should swell the womb / That bore great Homer; whom Fame freed from tomb,” so begins the fourth of “Certain ancient Greek Epigrams ” that George Chapman placed at the head of his Odyssey at its debut in 1615.1 The epigram was no mere antiquarian dressing for the text. It suggests a historical parallel with (...)

    Theological Ethics And Business Ethics.Richard T. De George - 1986 - Journal of Business Ethics 5 (6):421-432.
Philosophers have constituted business ethics as a field by providing a systematic overview that interrelates its problems and concepts and that supplies the basis for building on attained results. Is there a properly theological task in business ethics? The religious/theological literature on business ethics falls into four classes: (1) the application of religious morality to business practices; (2) the use of encyclical teachings about capitalism; (3) the interpretation of business relations in agapa-istic terms; and (4) the critique of business from (...)

  15. Ethics, academic freedom and academic tenure.Richard T. De George - 2003 - Journal of Academic Ethics 1 (1):11-25.
Universities can and have existed without academic freedom and academic tenure. But academic freedom is necessary for a university dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge in a democratic society. Both academic freedom and academic tenure are not only rights but also carry with them moral obligations. Furthermore academic tenure is the best defense of academic freedom that American universities have found. Academic tenure can be successfully defended from the many contemporary attacks to which it is being subjected only insofar as (...)

    Social Reality and Social Relations.Richard T. De George - 1983 - Review of Metaphysics 37 (1):3 - 20.
THE emphasis of modern and contemporary philosophy on the individual has led to finely honed theories about knowledge, morality, and being. These have produced a variety of insights, despite the fact that the human individual is always and necessarily found in a social context, and has no knowledge, morality, or being apart from a larger whole. The emphasis on the individual, however, has tended to overshadow concern with the social whole.

Although I share many of the doubts about corporate citizenship of Néron and Norman, I join in their constructive project both by offering friendly criticism and by suggesting that their approach be extended further than they carry it. I argue first that rather than attempting to reform the language of corporate citizenship, we support its use where the effects are positive; second, that we concentrate on the fifth of their candidates for assessment; and third, that we extend the discussion to (...)

    Morality, ethics and East‐European Marxism.Richard T. De George - 1966 - Inquiry: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Philosophy 9 (1):11 – 29.
In recent years an orthodox Marxist-Leninist ethics has been developing in the Soviet Union. It is metaphysically based, teleologically oriented, and objectivist in its claims. Soviet ethical writings encompass five different activities: description, interpretative classification, prescription, content-analysis, and refutation. Among the distinctive features of the new Soviet Moral Code are its requirement of devotion to the Communist cause, its exclusively social orientation, and its emphasis on work. Upon analysis it turns out to prescribe a completely externalized and provincial morality. A (...)

What I shall argue in this paper is that both the meaning and criteria of truth are functions of some context, framework, or system. While I shall therefore to some extent challenge Brand Blanshard’s claims that coherence is the nature and the sole criterion of truth, I hope at the same time to do justice to his theory, as well as to other rival theories of truth.

Business Ethics and the Challenge of the Information Age.Richard T. De George - 2000 - Business Ethics Quarterly 10 (1):63-72.
The standard ethical issues of business, so familiar to those in business ethics, are all being transformed as the Industrial Age isgiving way to the Information Age. In the Information Age companies are learning to do business in new ways. The computer has entered and is entering more and more into all the realms of business so that it leaves none of them unchanged. This means that marketing is done differently, that manufacturing is done differently, that management is done differently, (...)

    The Uneasy Revival of Metaphysics.Richard T. De George - 1962 - Review of Metaphysics 16 (1):68-81.
The present revival of metaphysics seems to be characterized primarily by the fact that it is now once again respectable to turn one's attention to perennial problems and to speak of them openly as metaphysical problems. Amid the resulting discussions, a certain amount of uncertainty and caution pervades the air, and there is still a great deal of doubt about how far one may or should go with respect to metaphysical speculation. Discussion seems to be centering primarily on the meaning (...)

This paper illustrates the overlap of computer ethics and business ethics by examining two issues. The first is the lack of fit between digitalized information and copyright protection. Although there are moral arguments that can be used to justify protection of intellectual property, including computer software and digitalized data, the way that copyright protection has developed often reflects vested interests rather than the considered weighing of moral considerations. As a result, with respect to downloading MP3s, among other material, what is (...)

Over the course of three decades, in works spanning questions of theory, technique, and clinical practice, Charles Brenner has emerged as one of the preeminent analysts of his generation, a thinker whose probing estimation of mental conflict has promoted the evolutionary growth of analysis as theory even as it has clarified the clinical import of analysis as therapy. In _Psychoanalysis: The Science of Mental Conflict_, distinguished theorists and clinicians pay homage to Brenner by presenting original essays that converge in their (...)
