Et d'abord, que signifie la mort de l'autre, du prochain? Pour Paul-Louis Landsberg, l'appropriation spirituelle de la mort est une tâche décisive pour toute personne humaine. Les voies de cette appropriation sont diverses, mais ce n'est qu'en relation avec une personnalisation progressive du tout de l'existence humaine qu'elle acquiert réellement un (...) sens nouveau. Et c'est dans l'expérience mystique que la proximité avec l'expérience de la mort est la plus forte. Le Problème moral du suicide (1942) est un texte précieux, plus encore aujourd'hui qu'il y a cinquante ans. A l'encontre de ceux qui soutiennent le "droit" à la mort volontaire, P.-L. Landsberg explique que "l'homme est l'être qui peut se tuer et qui ne doit pas le faire", et, en ce sens, le suicide est un " problème spécifiquement humain". (shrink)

Support functions $s(h,e)=p(h\backslash e)-p(h)$ are widely used in discussion of explanation, causality and, recently, in connection with the possibility or otherwise of probabilistic induction. With this latter application in view, a rather complete analysis of the variety of support functions, their interrelationships and their "non-deductive" and "inductive" components is presented. With the restriction to two propositions, three variable probabilities are enough to discuss such problems. The analysis is illustrated by graphs, a Venn diagram and by using the Laplace Rule of (...) Succession as an illustrative example. It is concluded that within this framework one cannot prove or disprove the possibility of probabilistic induction. (shrink)

Two problems have long been confused with each other: the gravitational redshift as discussed by the equivalence principle; and the Doppler shift observed by a detector which moves with constant proper acceleration away from a stationary source. We here distinguish these two problems and give for the first time a solution of the former which is ‘exact’ within the context of the equivalence principle in a sense discussed in the paper. The equivalence principle leads to transformations between flat spacetimes. These (...) are analyzed, and a generalized Lorentz transformation is proposed which covers transformations from inertial to uniformly accelerated frames of reference. (shrink)

It is suggested that anoversight occurred in classical mechanics when time-derivatives of observables were treated on the same footing as the undifferentiated observables. Removal of this oversight points in the direction of quantum mechanics. Additional light is thrown on uncertainty relations and on quantum mechanics, as a possible form of a subtle statistical mechanics, by the formulation of aclassical uncertainty relation for a very simple model. The existence of universal motion,i.e., of zero-point energy, is lastly made plausible in terms of (...) a gravitational constant which is time-dependent. By these three considerations an attempt is made to link classical and quantum mechanics together more firmly, thus giving a better understanding of the latter. (shrink)
