Editors' Overview: Topics in the Responsible Management of Research Data.Joe Giffels, Sara H. Vollmer & Stephanie J. Bird - 2010 - Science and Engineering Ethics 16 (4):631-637.
Responsible data management is a multifaceted topic involving standards within the research community regarding research design and the sharing of data as well as the collection, selection, analysis and interpretation of data. Transparency in the manipulation of images is increasingly important in order to avoid misrepresentation of research findings, and research oversight is also critical in helping to assure the integrity of the research process. Intellectual property issues both unite and divide academe and industry in their approaches to data management. (...)

Peer review is a widely accepted instrument for raising the quality of science. Peer review limits the enormous unstructured influx of information and the sheer amount of dubious data, which in its absence would plunge science into chaos. In particular, peer review offers the benefit of eliminating papers that suffer from poor craftsmanship or methodological shortcomings, especially in the experimental sciences. However, we believe that peer review is not always appropriate for the evaluation of controversial hypothetical science. We argue that (...)

Public support for producer adoption of soil health practices.Dayton M. Lambert, Lixia H. Lambert, Joe Ripberger, Hank Jenkins-Smith & Carol L. Silva - forthcoming - Agriculture and Human Values:1-17.
This study investigates the effects of issue framing on public support for programs encouraging farmer adoption of soil health practices. While extensive research exists on farmer adoption of best soil management practices, this study uniquely examines public willingness to support such initiatives. Using data from a survey of Oklahoma residents, we assess the public’s attitudes concerning hypothetical programs supporting farmer adoption of soil health practices to control soil erosion, sequester carbon, and retain moisture. Three implementation methods were considered and framed (...)

Is This Within Reach? Left but Not Right Brain Damage Affects Affordance Judgment Tendencies.Jennifer Randerath, Lisa Finkel, Cheryl Shigaki, Joe Burris, Ashish Nanda, Peter Hwang & Scott H. Frey - 2021 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 14.
The ability to judge accurately whether or not an action can be accomplished successfully is critical for selecting appropriate response options that enable adaptive behaviors. Such affordance judgments are thought to rely on the perceived fit between environmental properties and knowledge of one's current physical capabilities. Little, however, is currently known about the ability of individuals to judge their own affordances following a stroke, or about the underlying neural mechanisms involved. To address these issues, we employed a signal detection approach (...)

We report the identification of a recurrent, 520-kb 16p12.1 microdeletion associated with childhood developmental delay. The microdeletion was detected in 20 of 11,873 cases compared with 2 of 8,540 controls and replicated in a second series of 22 of 9,254 cases compared with 6 of 6,299 controls. Most deletions were inherited, with carrier parents likely to manifest neuropsychiatric phenotypes compared to non-carrier parents. Probands were more likely to carry an additional large copy-number variant when compared to matched controls. The clinical (...)

More Than Free Markets: Adam Smith and the Virtue of Responsibility.Joe Blosser - 2016 - Journal of the Society of Christian Ethics 36 (1):163-179.
In recent years, scholars have increasingly emphasized the reliance of Adam Smith’s moral theory on the virtues. This essay argues that Smith’s account of the virtues differs from most virtue theories because his must be read through the construct of the impartial spectator. Smith’s spectator bears what Emmanuel Levinas might call a “trace” of the transcendent and employs what Amartya Sen calls an “open impartiality,” which is an impartiality not bound to any social group. As the essay explores how Smith (...)

  29. How necessary is the past? Reply to Campbell.Matthew H. Slater - manuscript
Joe Campbell has identified an apparent flaw in van Inwagen’s Consequence Argument. It apparently derives a metaphysically necessary conclusion from what Campbell argues is a contingent premise: that the past is in some sense necessary. I criticise Campbell’s examples attempting to show that this is not the case (in the requisite sense) and suggest some directions along which an incompatibilist could reconstruct her argument so as to remain immune to Campbell’s worries.

At 30 years' distance, it is safe to say that Nozick's Anarchy, State and Utopia has achieved the status of a classic. It is not only the central text for all contemporary academic discussions of libertarianism; with Rawls's A Theory of Justice, it arguably frames the landscape of academic political philosophy in second half of 20th century. Many factors, obviously account for the prominence of the book. This paper considers one: the book's use of rhetoric to charm and disarm its (...)

Both Kant and James claim to limit the role of knowledge in order to make room for faith. In this paper, we argue that despite some similarities, their attempts to do this come apart. Our main claim is that, although both Kant and James justify our adopting religious beliefs on practical grounds, James believes that we can—and should—subsequently assess such beliefs on the basis of evidence. We offer our own account of this evidence and discuss what this difference means for (...)
