Identifying Rewards Over Difficulties Buffers the Impact of Time in COVID-19 Lockdown for Parents in Australia.Jane S. Herbert, Annaleise Mitchell, Stuart J. Brentnall & Amy L. Bird - 2020 - Frontiers in Psychology 11.
ObjectivePhysical isolation measures, known as lockdown or shelter-in-place, experienced during coronavirus disease 2019 have the potential to cause psychological distress. This study was conducted to examine parents’ perceived stress and whether reports of rewards and challenges during lockdown impact stress.MethodsData were collected using a cross-sectional online survey in New South Wales, Australia, across the 4-week lockdown. The survey was completed by 158 parents of children aged under 6 years. Stress was measured using the short form of the Perceived Stress Scale. (...)

Precarious projects: the performative structure of reclamation.Cassie Herbert - 2015 - Language Sciences 52:131–138.
Derogatory terms can be powerful mechanisms of subordination, while re-appropriating these terms can be a strategy to fight back against social injustice. I argue that projects seeking to reclaim slurs have a performative structure that raises particular hazards. Whereas more familiar forms of protest may fail to bring about their intended result, attempts to re-appropriate slurs can fail to be understood as transgressive acts at all. When attempts at reclamation fail, their force is distorted; context and convention lead the hearer (...)

A convenient and practical method is presented for the generation of unbiased random sequences. The method is based on combining discrete outputs and does not require either precisely specified and unbiased input or complex procedures and equipment.

A Perfect Set of Reals with Finite Self-Information.Ian Herbert - 2013 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 78 (4):1229-1246.
We examine a definition of the mutual information of two reals proposed by Levin in [5]. The mutual information iswhereK is the prefix-free Kolmogorov complexity. A realAis said to have finite self-information ifI is finite. We give a construction for a perfect Π10class of reals with this property, which settles some open questions posed by Hirschfeldt and Weber. The construction produces a perfect set of reals withK≤+KA+f for any given Δ20fwith a particularly nice approximation and for a specific choice of (...)

    Time in Philosophy and in Physics.Herbert Dingle - 1979 - Philosophy 54 (207):99 - 104.
The essay centers on Godel's views on the place of our intuitive concept of time in philosophy and in physics. It presents my interpretation of his work on the theory of relativity, his observations on the relationship between Einstein's theory and Kantian philosophy, as well as some of the scattered remarks in his conversations with me in the seventies-namely, those of the philosophies of Leibniz, Hegel and Husserl-as a successor of Kant-in relation to their conceptions of time.

Group selection and human prosociality.Herbert Gintis - 2000 - Journal of Consciousness Studies 7 (1-2):1-2.
Are humans genetically predisposed to exhibit prosocial behaviours? Elliott Sober and David Sloan Wilson have made major contributions to our understanding of this question. In my remarks here I will propose a revision in their definition of altruism, suggest a broader term, ‘prosociality', to account for cooperation in humans, and present evidence for a particular set of human prosocial traits that likely evolved with our species and may account for our unique ability to maintain intricate cooperative networks not based on (...)

Electronic mail and information exchange on the World Wide Web have in recent years developed into indispensible features of scholarly activity. The speed and convenience of computer-mediated communication across the planet are rapidly changing the established patterns of academic transactions. While thousands of philosophers have begun to take advantage of e-mail, web-servers or digital text repositories, systematic exploration of the newly available technology has been lagging behind. There is, it has to be admitted, a colourful offspring of postmodern writing celebrating (...)
