New concepts may prove necessary to profit from the avalanche of sequence data on the genome, transcriptome, proteome and interactome and to relate this information to cell physiology. Here, we focus on the concept of large activity-based structures, or hyperstructures, in which a variety of types of molecules are brought together to perform a function. We review the evidence for the existence of hyperstructures responsible for the initiation of DNA replication, the sequestration of newly replicated origins of replication, cell division (...) and for metabolism. The processes responsible for hyperstructure formation include changes in enzyme affinities due to metabolite-induction, lipid-protein affinities, elevated local concentrations of proteins and their binding sites on DNA and RNA, and transertion. Experimental techniques exist that can be used to study hyperstructures and we review some of the ones less familiar to biologists. Finally, we speculate on how a variety of in silico approaches involving cellular automata and multi-agent systems could be combined to develop new concepts in the form of an Integrated cell (I-cell) which would undergo selection for growth and survival in a world of artificial microbiology. The present contribution offers an overview of a new area of research in the field of foreign language acquisition, which was triggered by the introduction of Positive Psychology (PP) ( MacIntyre and Gregersen, 2012 ). For many years, a cognitive perspective had dominated research in applied linguistics. Around the turn of the millennium researchers became increasingly interested in the role of emotions in foreign language learning and teaching, beyond established concepts like foreign language anxiety and constructs like motivation and attitudes (...) toward the foreign language. As a result, a more nuanced understanding of the role of positive and negative learner and teacher emotions emerged, underpinned by solid empirical research using a wide range of epistemological and methodological approaches. PP interventions have been carried out in schools and universities to strengthen learners and teachers’ experiences of flow, hope, courage, well-being, optimism, creativity, happiness, grit, resilience, strengths, and laughter with the aim of enhancing learners’ linguistic progress. This paper distinguishes the early period in the field that started with MacIntyre and Gregersen (2012), like a snowdrop after winter, and that was followed by a number of early studies in relatively peripheral journals. We argue that 2016 is the starting point of the current period, characterized by gradual recognition in applied linguistics, growing popularity of PP, and an exponential increase in publications in more mainstream journals. Jean-Marc Coicaud's article begins by stressing the contemporary importance and the current trend of political apology. Recent political apologies offered in Australia and Canada to their indigenous populations form a significant part of this story. He then analyzes a number of intriguing paradoxes at the core of the dynamics of apology. These paradoxes give meaning to apology but also make the very idea of apology extremely challenging. They have to do with the relationships of apology with time, law (...) and the unforgivable. The most intriguing of these paradoxes concerns apology and the unforgivable. Indeed, the greater the wrong, the more valuable the apology. But, then, the more difficult it becomes to issue and to accept an apology. This latter paradox is namely examined in the context of mass crimes, taken from Europe, Africa and Asia. As a whole these paradoxes are all the more intriguing considering what apology in a political context aims to accomplish, for the actor who issues the apology, for the one who receives it, for their relationship, and for the social environment in which this takes place. This paper proposes a synthetic presentation of the proof construction paradigm, which underlies most of the research and development in the so-called “logic programming” area. Two essential aspects of this paradigm are discussed here: true non-determinism and partial information. A new formulation of Focussing, the basic property used to deal with non-determinism in proof construction, is presented. This formulation is then used to introduce a general constraint-based technique capable of dealing with partial information in proof construction. One of the baselines (...) of the paper is to avoid to rely on syntax to describe the key mechanisms of the paradigm. In fact, the bipolar decomposition of formulas captures their main structure, which can then be directly mapped into a sequent system that uses only atoms. This system thus completely “dissolves” the syntax of the formulas and retains only their behavioural content as far as proof construction is concerned. One step further is taken with the so-called “abstract” proofs, which dissolves in a similar way the specific tree-like syntax of the proofs themselves and retains only what is relevant to proof construction. The creation of the world, strictly understood as the “ontological self-insufficiency” appears as a concept independent of the original gift and allows to consider God the Creator as unnecessary. The present article compares Ms. Nordmann’s analysis with the one inherited from the theological tradition. The main book thesis is disputed on the basis of counter-examples issued from contemporary natural sciences. Yet, the conclusion proclaims a connection between creation and redemption of a world in the process of accomplishment. The article focuses on how emotions and passions are addressed in the field of international relations. As such it makes three main points. First, the article argues that, although presupposed in mainstream international relations, because of the influence of positivism emotions and passions have tended to be overlooked. Second, it makes the point that in recent years scholars with constructivist leanings have been increasingly interested in taking emotions and passions seriously as an academic area of research. Third, and finally, the (...) article concludes that despite the progress made in the 2000s on the understanding of emotions and passions in international relations, more work remains to be done. The idea that some day robots may have emotions has captured the imagination of many and has been dramatized by robots and androids in such famous movies as 2001 Space Odyssey's HAL or Star Trek's Data. By contrast, the editors of this book have assembled a panel of experts in neuroscience and artificial intelligence who have dared to tackle the issue of whether robots can have emotions from a purely scientific point of view. The study of the brain now usefully (...) informs study of the social, communicative, adaptive, regulatory, and experimental aspects of emotion and offers support for the idea that we exploit our own psychological responses in order to feel others' emotions. The contributors show the many ways in which the brain can be analyzed to shed light on emotions. Fear, reward, and punishment provide structuring concepts for a number of investigations. Neurochemistry reveals the ways in which different "neuromodulators" such as serotonin, dopamine, and opioids can affect the emotional valence of the brain. And studies of different regions such as the amygdala and orbitofrontal cortex provide a view of the brain as a network of interacting subsystems. Related studies in artificial intelligence and robotics are discussed and new multi-level architectures are proposed that make it possible for emotions to be implemented. It is now an accepted task in robotics to build robots that perceive human expressions of emotion and can "express" simulated emotions to ease interactions with humans. Looking towards future innovations, some scientists posit roles for emotion with our fellow humans. All of these issues are covered in this timely and stimulating book which is written for researchers and graduated students in neuroscience, cognitive science, psychology, robotics, and artificial intelligence. This article focuses on the relationship between emotions and passions, on the one hand, and values, needs and rights, on the other. This relationship is indeed central to the social dimension of international politics. In this perspective, the article examines how emotions and passions can be at the same time effects and causes of the extent to which actors feel that their needs and rights are fulfilled or not. In the process, the article also explores the negative and positive features (...) of emotions and passions, and their impact on the nature and dynamics of change in international affairs. Beyond this general approach to emotions and passions in connection with the social dimension of international politics and the questions of values, needs, and rights of actors and change, it concludes with the idea that there is also a contextual dimension to the generic argument developed in the article. The favourable reception of the analytic philosophy of language plays a central role in the composition of Ricœur’s literary hermeneutics. Following a brief description of the historical and methodological context of this reception, we show how Ricœur intends to link up phenomenology and analytic philosophy of language. Then we examine the role allocated to the analytic philosophy of language in establishing the idea of metaphor as a “more fundamental mode of reference” in The Rule of Metaphor . But once again (...) Ricœur situates this semantic interpretation of metaphor within the context of an ontology. Based on a typical case study, this article proposes to explore the question of grief experienced during a process of evangelical deconversion. In an interdisciplinary and clinical approach, it seeks to conceive a typologization of the grief of religion from the philosophy of Aristotle’s Rhetoric of the Passions, the sociology of deconversion, the sociology of grieving, and the anthropology of spiritual guidance. It explores the construction of spontaneous and institutional grieving rituals adapted to the process of deconversion.

Finding its originality in an anchorage that is both clinical and speculative, this article brings to the science of spiritual accompaniment not only the consideration of a double typology of spiritual wounds, but also and above all the way of accompanying them spiritually. Regarding the double typology of spiritual wounds, the author draws on his research developed in his work Soins palliatifs. Accompagner pour vivre, which presents a typology of so-called “fundamental” injuries. Armed with this foundation, the author takes on (...) the work of a spiritual care intern who he has supervised himself. From the 20 verbatim produced by the latter, based on a qualitative methodology, he updates a second typology of injuries which he calls “transversal.” It is then, in the conjunction of these two typologies, that the author deals with the way of accompanying them and offers secular spiritual accompaniment going beyond what the anthropology of the theologian and philosopher Louis Roy suggests. This surpassing takes place thanks to the appropriation that Corine Pelluchon makes of the anthropology of Bernard de Clairvaux. The conceptual framework of the article invites us to revisit the notion of “existential suffering” in the light of spiritual wounds and therefore “spiritual suffering.”. (shrink)

Despite her hostility to surrealism, Simone Weil received a paradoxical reception in the work and thought of Georges Bataille. From this point onwards she has attracted the interest of psychoanalysis up to the present day. After their meeting and exchanges at the beginning of the 1930s, Bataille wrote a novel in which he created a portrait of Simone Weil and asks, through her, questions which served to develop and enrich the next stages of his theoretical constructions. This pathway to progress (...) through reference to Simone Weil has often gone unnoticed. However, it deserves to be reconstituted because it brings a disturbing light that Weil would not have approved but that could help us to renew our understanding of her personality and her work. This book reveals the French scientific contribution to the mathematical theory of nonlinear oscillations and its development. The work offers a critical examination of sources with a focus on the twentieth century, especially the period between the wars. Readers will see that, contrary to what is often written, France's role has been significant. Important contributions were made through both the work of French scholars from within diverse disciplines, and through the geographical crossroads that France provided to scientific communication at the (...) time. This study includes an examination of the period before the First World War which is vital to understanding the work of the later period. By examining literature sources such as periodicals on the topic of electricity from that era, the author has unearthed a very important text by Henri Poincaré, dating from 1908. In this work Poincaré applied the concept of limit cycle to study the stability of the oscillations of a device for radio engineering. The “discovery” of this text means that the classical perspective of the historiography of this mathematical theory must be modified. Credit was hitherto attributed to the Russian mathematician Andronov, from correspondence dating to 1929. In the newly discovered Poincaré text there appears to be a strong interaction between science and technology or, more precisely, between mathematical analysis and radio engineering. This feature is one of the main components of the process of developing the theory of nonlinear oscillations. Indeed it is a feature of many of the texts referred to in these chapters, as they trace the significant developments to which France contributed. Scholars in the fields of the history of mathematics and the history of science, and anyone with an interest in the philosophical underpinnings of science will find this a particularly engaging account of scientific discovery and scholarly communication from an era full of exciting developments. La thèse typiquement plotinienne de la non-descente partielle de l’âme n’est pas le simple reflet de la capacité personnelle de Plotin à remonter par lui-même vers le principe - comme on l’a longtemps suggéré faute de mieux -, mais la reformulation plotinienne d’une doctrine précise, l’?µ???s??? gnostique/hermétique, l’élu gnostique - le «pneumatique» plus précisément -, dont l’âme demeure consubstantielle au Plérôme divin, ne perdant jamais son lien substantiel avec lui et se trouvant par là même assuré du salut. L’âme non (...) pas simplement parente du divin comme l’enseignait déjà Platon, mais véritablement non descendue et consubstantielle à lui , telle que l’échafaude Plotin, accorde donc à tout homme ce lien ininterrompu et indissoluble avec les réalités les plus hautes que la gnose réservait seulement à quelques-uns. L’audace revendiquée sur ce point par Plotin , consiste à s’opposer non à des adversaires platoniciens en vérité ici introuvables, mais à des gnostiques platoniciens, des «séthiens» qui fréquentent son École et s’accordent à eux seuls le pouvoir d’atteindre l’Intelligible , tandis que, de l’avis du philosophe néoplatonicien, «toute âme est fille du père de là-bas». La revue _Temporalités_ est une nouvelle fois endeuillée avec la disparition de l’un ses proches collaborateurs. Nous avons appris en effet le décès de Max Reinert survenu à Brest, le dimanche 28 janvier. Il avait 80 ans. Max avait exercé ses compétences d’ingénieur de recherche dans divers laboratoires dont le dernier fut le PRINTEMPS. Claude Dubar qui en était le Directeur en 2004 avait tenu à associer notre ami aux travaux de l’équipe fondatrice de la revue. Son implication dans le (...) projet éditorial s’est concrétisée d’emblée par une contribution dont témoigne le sommaire du premier numéro intitulé « Premiers Jalons ». Mais surtout le nom de Max Reinert est indissolublement lié au logiciel ALCESTE. Il en a été le créateur et s’en est fait le démonstrateur dans de nombreux colloques dont les JADT, les _Journées internationales d’Analyse statistique des Données Textuelles _auxquelles il a régulièrement participé depuis l’origine. Aristotle considers that justice in general varies according to constitutions and that it also takes different forms according to times and cultures. But this assumed conventionalism does not prevent us from considering certain things just absolutely, precisely those that correspond to laws enacted in the three regimes themselves considered just absolutely (royalty, aristocracy, polity). But since the laws may still differ between these three regimes, should we postulate the existence of an even more fundamental just? Would it be the just (...) natural? Not sure, since Aristotle sometimes maintains that everything changes in the sensible world including what is natural. But perhaps there is a deeper just which is natural, and which frees itself from all change, imposing itself absolutely everywhere? It would then remain to determine what such a concept of just contains and whether it should be placed at the limit of the positive law, or even still beyond it. (shrink)

Narration ou argumentation? Une nouvelle polarité philosophique se dessine ainsi, chargée d'enjeux relatifs à la question de l'éthique. Par la mise en récit des expériences, la narration confère à l'identité personnelle un ancrage et une épaisseur historiques, orientant l'éthique vers un idéal substantiel de vie bonne. Par la justification rationnelle des réclamations, l'argumentation engage la responsabilité des sujets de droit, infléchissant l'éthique vers une idée procédurale de la société juste. Mais comment articuler la visée substantielle à la voie procédurale? Comment (...) assurer, sur la voie du discours, le principe de reconnaissance? Dans cette entreprise, l'éthique de la reconstruction revêt une signification décisive. C'est à introduire ce concept original que sont consacrées ces réflexions. Aucun philosophe n’aura entretenu des visées aussi universalisantes et sans frontières. C’est le cas, notamment, dans le domaine de la métaphysique, de la logique, du politique ou de la poétique. Les messages de vœux des présidents de la République constituent un genre discursif particulier, lié à l’épidictique, et fournissent un angle d’approche original pour l’analyse de l’ethos présidentiel vu du rituel politique. A la différence de Cotteret [1969], Labbé [1983, 1990], désormais Mayaffre [2004], nous saisissons le discours présidentiel sous un angle plus étroit mais dont on peut penser qu’il apportera des éléments intéressants si l’on considère cette forme codifiée comme une quintessence du statut présidentiel en représentation. A la suite (...) de Françoise Finniss Boursin [1992] mais aussi de Françoise Chambre [1984] et Elisabeth Rivory [1991], nous nous intéressons aux allocutions de fin d’année des présidents français, mais adoptons une démarche plus expérimentale, mobilisant différents outils lexicométriques que nous comparons. Nous saisissons ici l’ethos politique à travers les emplois des marques personnelles inscrivant le locuteur dans son discours, par le biais de plusieurs analyses des cooccurrences. (shrink)

This work presents a computational interpretation of the construction process for cyclic linear logic and non-commutative logic sequential proofs. We assume a proof construction paradigm, based on a normalisation procedure known as focussing, which efficiently manages the non-determinism of the construction. Similarly to the commutative case, a new formulation of focussing for NL is used to introduce a general constraint-based technique in order to dealwith partial information during proof construction. 2013 : la ville de Marseille était « Capitale européenne de la culture ». Dans ce contexte, l'Église catholique de Marseille a organisé, en juin 2013, un événement sur le modèle du « Parvis des Gentils », cet espace du Temple de Jérusalem auquel pouvaient accéder tous ceux qui n'étaient pas de confession juive : un lieu d'échanges donc, entre personnes de confessions ou de convictions différentes. - Le présent ouvrage rend compte des travaux universitaires organisés sur le thème « (...) humanisme et religion », en prenant appui sur l'oeuvre de deux grandes figures de l'humanisme contemporain, Albert Camus et Paul Ricoeur, tous deux nés en 1913. - Scruter l'énigme de l'humain dans l'inlassable recherche de ce qui fonde son désir de vivre : c'est à cette tâche que les oeuvres d'Albert Camus et de Paul Ricoeur nous convient, par les chemins complémentaires de la littérature et de la philosophie, renouvelant en profondeur la relation toujours renaissante entre humanisme et religion.
