Cq Interview With Heleen M. Dupuis: Actively Ending The Life Of A Severely Handicapped Newborn: A Dutch Ethicist's Perspective.Heleen M. Dupuis - 1993 - Cambridge Quarterly of Healthcare Ethics 2 (3):275-280.
CQ: The Baby Bas Ross case stirred much public debate in The Netherlands since 1988 -a newborn infant with Down's syndrome whose parents refused to consent to a surgery that would have repaired an otherwise fatal congenital anomaly. Can you share your thoughts with us on this case?HD: I was the first ethicist to comment on this case because I was a friend of Dr. Molenaar, who was the final surgical decision maker for Baby Bas. A physician and I supported (...)

    East and west in the face of technological change.Marc R. Dupuis - 1989 - Zygon 24 (4):437-445.
Technological changes affect Western culture in three ways: the ratio between the lifetimes of technologies and the human lifetime is inverted; the three principal realms of human life (the home, the workplace, and leisure activity), as well as political systems, are affected; and the cohesion of the social body is threatened. The impact on Eastern culture is softened by a clearer role assigned to school, the resulting level of education, and the influence of Confucian ethics. However, acculturation will vary among (...)

    Renewal of christianity through interreligious dialogue.Jacques Dupuis - 2004 - Bijdragen 65 (2):131-143.
The aim of the paper is to show that in the present world a renewal of Christianity is more likely to take place through interreligious dialogue than in opposition to the other religious traditions. Religious pluralism must not be viewed as a mere fact of life to be reckoned with, much less as an impediment to Christian mission and identity, but as a divine grace to be thankful for and an opportunity to be seized – a gift and a task. (...)

Scoping the ethical principles of cybersecurity fear appeals.Marc Dupuis & Karen Renaud - 2020 - Ethics and Information Technology 23 (3):265-284.
Fear appeals are used in many domains. Cybersecurity researchers are also starting to experiment with fear appeals, many reporting positive outcomes. Yet there are ethical concerns related to the use of fear to motivate action. In this paper, we explore this aspect from the perspectives of cybersecurity fear appealdeployersandrecipients. We commenced our investigation by considering fear appeals from three foundational ethical perspectives. We then consulted the two stakeholder groups to gain insights into the ethical concerns they consider to be pertinent. (...)

What the Past Will Be: Curating Memory in Peru’s Yuyanapaq: Para Recordar.Kaitlin M. Murphy - 2015 - Human Rights Review 16 (1):23-38.
This article analyzes the photographic exhibit Yuyanapaq: Para Recordar, which was a product of the Peruvian Truth and Reconciliation Commission. It focuses specifically on the curatorial process and political desires shaping Yuyanapaq, and it examines the ways in which photographs were intended to intervene in and script a national consciousness and shared memory during and after Peru’s transition process. Exploring across the three iterations of Yuyanapaq, I ask how we might attempt to bear witness to past conflict without inadvertently perpetuating (...)

The biobehavioral family model with a seminarian population: A systems perspective of clinical care.Kaitlin Smith, David Wang, Andrea Canada, John M. Poston, Rick Bee & Lara Hurlbert - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
Seminary students remain unstudied in the research literature despite their eminent role in caring for the wellbeing of congregants. This study aimed to conduct baseline analysis of their family of origin health, psychological health, and physiological heath by utilizing the Biobehavioral Family Model as a conceptual framework for understanding the associations between these constructs. Statistical analysis utilizing structural equation modeling provided support that the BBFM was a sound model for assessing the relationships between these constructs within a seminary sample. Additionally, (...)

Cet obscur objet du désir-cinéma: concept majeur, concept mineur.Joachim Daniel Dupuis - 2024 - Paris: L'Harmattan.
L'inspiration (...)

Import Penetration and Corporate Misconduct: A Natural Experiment.Christopher Dupuis & Ying Zheng - 2024 - Journal of Business Ethics 195 (3):475-506.
Corporate misconduct receives significant attention in the business ethics literature. This paper studies how corporate misconduct is impacted by import penetration from China, which is largely exogenous to the U.S. product market. Using this natural experiment, we find that heightened Chinese import penetration curbs corporate misconduct of U.S. firms. The effect is more pronounced for firms with weaker corporate governance and firms more vulnerable to product market competition. The findings provide implications for firms facing increased import penetration. Firms may consider (...)

    Herbert Marcuse and the.Francis Dupuis-déri - 2013 - Radical Philosophy Review 16 (2):529-547.
There is at present a broad social movement opposing the advanced capitalist system and the politicians that support it. As in the 1960s, this political current is comprised of reformists on the one hand and radicals on the other. In proposing a rereading of Herbert Marcuse, we hope to facilitate a better understanding of the frame of mind of the radicals participating in today’s movement against capitalist globalization. The limitations of Marcuse’s thought may point to the limitations of contemporary radicalism (...)

When someone encounters an explanation perceived as weak, this may lead to a feeling of deprivation or tension that can be resolved by engaging in additional learning. This study examined to what extent children respond to weak explanations by seeking additional learning opportunities. Seven‐ to ten‐year‐olds (N = 81) explored questions and explanations (circular or mechanistic) about 12 animals using a novel Android tablet application. After rating the quality of an initial explanation, children could request and receive additional information or (...)

Not in my body: BGH and the rise of organic milk. [REVIEW]E. Melanie DuPuis - 2000 - Agriculture and Human Values 17 (3):285-295.
The advent of rBGH (recombinant bovinegrowth hormone) has spurred the establishment of anorganic milk industry. The food systems/commoditychain analytical framework cannot fully explain therise of this new food. An adequate understanding ofthe consumer's role in the food system/commodity chainrequires more attention to consumption as a form ofpolitics. One way to do this is to look at thepolitics of other new social movements, especiallythose contesting mainstream notions of risk. From thisapproach, organic milk consumption challenges rBGHfrom a ``Not-in-my-Body'' or ``NIMB'' politics of (...)

Migrating Metaphors: Why We Should Be Concerned About a ‘War on Mental Illness’ in the Aftermath of COVID-19.Kaitlin Sibbald - 2023 - Canadian Journal of Bioethics / Revue canadienne de bioéthique 6 (1):13-23.
In the aftermath of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, there is a predicted (and emerging) increase in experiences of mental illness. This phenomenon has been described as “the next pandemic”, suggesting that the concepts used to understand and respond to the COVID-19 pandemic are being transferred to conceptualize mental illness. The COVID-19 pandemic was, and continues to be, framed in public media using military metaphors, which can potentially migrate to conceptualizations of mental illness along with pandemic rhetoric. Given that metaphors shape (...)

An Agent-Based Model of MySide Bias in Scientific Debates.Louise Dupuis de Tarlé, Matteo Michelini, AnneMarie Borg, Pigozzi Gabriella, Rouchier Juliette, Straßer Christian & Dunja Šešelja - unknown
In this paper, we present an agent-based model for studying the impact of 'myside bias' on the argumentative dynamics in scientific communities. Recent insights in cognitive science suggest that scientific reasoning is influenced by `myside bias'. This bias manifests as a tendency to prioritize the search and generation of arguments that support one's views rather than arguments that undermine them. Additionally, individuals tend to apply more critical scrutiny to opposing stances than to their own. Although myside bias may pull individual (...)
