    Content Differences for Abstract and Concrete Concepts.Katja Katja Wiemer-Hastings & Xu Xu - 2005 - Cognitive Science 29 (5):719-736.
Concept properties are an integral part of theories of conceptual representation and processing. To date, little is known about conceptual properties of abstract concepts, such as idea. This experiment systematically compared the content of 18 abstract and 18 concrete concepts, using a feature generation task. Thirty‐one participants listed characteristics of the concepts (i.e., item properties) or their relevant context (i.e., context properties). Abstract concepts had significantly fewer intrinsic item properties and more properties expressing subjective experiences than concrete concepts. Situation components (...)

    Who needs created features?Katja Wiemer-Hastings & Arthur C. Graesser - 1998 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 21 (1):39-39.
Schyns, Goldstone & Thibaut present reasonable arguments for feature creation in category learning. We argue, however, that they do not provide unequivocal evidence either for the necessity or for the occurrence of feature creation. In an effort to sharpen the debate, we take the stand that a fixed feature approach is to be preferred in the absence of compelling evidence.

    Perceiving abstract concepts.Katja Wiemer-Hastings & Arthur C. Graesser - 1999 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 22 (4):635-636.
The meanings of abstract concepts depend on context. Perceptual symbol systems (PSS) provide a powerful framework for representing such context. Whereas a few expected difficulties for simulations are consistent with empirical findings, the theory does not clearly predict simulations of specific abstract concepts in a testable way and does not appear to distinguish abstract noun concepts (like truth) from their stem concepts (such as true).

Modern nursing and modern physics: does quantum theory contain useful insights for nursing practice and healthcare management?John Hastings - 2002 - Nursing Philosophy 3 (3):205-212.
In recent years, a number of articles have appeared in the nursing literature proposing that the branch of modern physics known as quantum theory offers insights that may be useful in nursing practice and healthcare management. This paper critiques this literature in the light of key concepts in quantum theory. The conclusion is that quantum theory has been misunderstood and misapplied within the nursing journals. Quantum theory is essentially mathematical and is based on quantitative experimentation. To successfully apply this theory (...)

William James, Conversion and Rapid, Radical Transformation.Arthur Hastings - 2010 - Journal of Consciousness Studies 17 (11-12):11-12.
This essay briefly considers the psychology of radical psychological transformations, sometimes termed 'quantum change', such as religious conversions. Such transformations are the focus of two of William James's chapters in The Varieties of Religious Experience. They can occur abruptly, resulting in a restructuring of the entire personality, sometimes in the direction of greater health, or recovery from drug addiction. The author summarizes seven reported aspects of quantum change such as positive shifts of values or attitudes, widening of perspectives, and increases (...)

Affective science conducts interdisciplinary research into the emotions and other affective phenomena. Currently, such research is hampered by the lack of common definitions of te rms used to describe, categorise and report both individual emotional experiences and the results of scientific investigations of such experiences. High quality ontologies provide formal definitions for types of entities in reality and for the relationships between such entities, definitions which can be used to disambiguate and unify data across different disciplines. Heretofore, there has been (...)

Mental and behavioral disorders represent a significant portion of the public health burden in all countries. The human cost of these disorders is immense, yet treatment options for sufferers are currently limited, with many patients failing to respond sufficiently to available interventions and drugs. High quality ontologies facilitate data aggregation and comparison across different disciplines, and may therefore speed up the translation of primary research into novel therapeutics. Realism-based ontologies describe entities in reality and the relationships between them in such (...)

The Emotion Ontology is an ontology covering all aspects of emotional and affective mental functioning. It is being developed following the principles of the OBO Foundry and Ontological Realism. This means that in compiling the ontology, we emphasize the importance of the nature of the entities in reality that the ontology is describing. One of the ways in which realism-based ontologies are being successfully used within biomedical science is in the annotation of scientific research results in publicly available databases. Such (...)

Steinbeck - 2011 - In Ronald Cornet & Stefan Schulz, Semantic Applications in Life Sciences. Proceedings of the 4th International Workshop on Formal Biomedical Knowledge Representation, hosted by Bio-Ontologies 2010.
Ontologies aim to represent what is general, by means of universal statements. In contrast, dispositional predications capture knowledge about what is likely to happen if a certain set of circumstances obtain, which is crucial in investigative research such as in drug discovery and systems biology, where entities which are constitutionally dissimilar can nevertheless have similar behavior in a biological context. While such dispositional properties are increasingly included in biomedical ontologies, the circumstances under which the dispositions are realized are seldom explicitly (...)

    Libanius on Constantine.Hans-Ulrich Wiemer - 1994 - Classical Quarterly 44 (2):511-524.
It is well known that the emperor Julian plays a central role in the life and writings of the Antiochene sophist Libanius. As a commentator on the life and reign of the emperor Constantine, he is seldom taken into account, and if he is, he usually gets short shrift as being verbose and unreliable. This neglect is, I believe, hardly justified. Even if it were true that Libanius could not teach us anything about the historical Constantine, his testimony still deserves (...)

    The Role of Ethical Ideology in Reactions to Injustice.Stephanie E. Hastings & Joan E. Finegan - 2011 - Journal of Business Ethics 100 (4):689 - 703.
Forsyth (J Pers Soc Psychol 39(1): 175-184, 1980) argued that ethical ideology includes the two orthogonal dimensions of relativism and idealism. Relativists determine morality by looking at the complexities of the situation rather than relying on universal moral rules, while idealists believe that positive consequences can always be obtained without harming others. This study examined the role of ethical ideology as a moderator between justice and constructive and deviant reactions to injustice. Students with work experience (N = 200) completed Bennett (...)

This introductory article begins by discussing why economic inequality is of such profound interest, particularly in the light of recent changes in national and global economies. It goes on to consider the concept of economic inequality and the breadth of topics it encompasses. The distinctive nature of this field of research is discussed, followed by a description of a framework within which the various elements or aspects can be viewed and organized. The aim of the book and its intended audience (...)

Catching the elusive: lexical evidentiality markers in Slavic languages: (a questionnaire study and its background).Björn Wiemer - 2018 - New York: Peter Lang.
Evidentiality deals with the marking of information source, that is with means that specify how we come to know what we (think to) know. For instance, such means indicate whether knowledge derives from hearsay, or whether an inference has been based on perception or on knowledge about habits. Often these indications are vague. This book focuses on sentence adverbs and so-called function words in Slavic languages. Six of them were subject of a questionnaire survey, whose discussion, preceded by general methodological (...)

Ontologies are being developed throughout the biomedical sciences to address standardization, integration, classification and reasoning needs against the background of an increasingly data-driven research paradigm. In particular, ontologies facilitate the translation of basic research into benefits for the patient by making research results more discoverable and by facilitating knowledge transfer across disciplinary boundaries. Addressing and adequately treating mental illness is one of our most pressing public health challenges. Primary research across multiple disciplines such as psychology, psychiatry, biology, neuroscience and pharmacology (...)
