A. Tarski [21] proposed the study of infinitary consequence operations as the central topic of mathematical logic. He considered monotonicity to be a property of all such operations. In this paper, we weaken the monotonicity requirement and consider more general operations, inference operations. These operations describe the nonmonotonic logics both humans and machines seem to be using when infering dofeasible information from incomplete knowledge. We single out a number of interesting families of inference operations. Evidence of the intimate linkage of the shaman's song and divinatory procedures may be viewed in the ancient epics. These narrative poems contain structural and thematic elements recognizable from the shaman's song—in particular his or her voyage to the Otherworld and the guidance of oracular powers. In this paper, The Epic of Gilgamesh, Euripedes' Ion, and The Ozidi Saga (a living epic from West Africa) are examined as recuperations of the orally composed and transmitted song of the shaman. I argue (...) that the epics—the origins of which predate their composition in literary form—bear witness to these most ancient and mysterious forms of linguistic expression. As depictions of Otherwordly journeys, they can be viewed through a metaphysic outside of time, rendering divination not only possible but inevitable, and necessitating a language of abstraction, allusion, and ambiguity. Today's experimental poetries may not all partake of a conscious recuperation of shamanic themes and forms, but they share an imaginary (yet not imagined) repositioning of reality, an open questioning of consensus forms of awareness, and an aesthetic shaping of what Jean Gebser calls “Integral Consciousness” (15), the simultaneous integration-disintegration of archaic, mythic, magic, and mental paradigms in an intensification of awareness which sees time as diaphanous, and Mind as a doorway between possibilities. Was ist Philosophie? Philosophie sei die Anleitung zu philosophieren heiBt es und die Gesmichte der Philosophie das imaginare Museum, das dem Publikum zu andamtigem Besum offen zu halten sei und in dem der junge Philosoph die Meister studiere, um seinen eigenen Stil zu finden. Diese Parallele zur Kunst macht die Mannigfaltigkeit der Smulen, die so bedrockend ist, wenn Philosophie eine Wissenschaft sein solI, zu Reimtum und es ware alles gut, wenn die klassische Philo sophie nimt so unverkennbar im Stil der (...) Wissenschaft gesmrieben ware. Das gibt zu denken: Die scheinbar soliberale Idee, die Philo sophie sei nimt eine Wissenschaft, wird zu einem Vorurteil, sob aId man folgert, nach ihrer Wissenschaftlichkeit braume nun nicht mehr gefragt zu werden, und die Objektivitat der Unterbringung von Ge danken in der Geschichte der Gedanken ist eine Verflihrung, in Ge schichte zu spekulieren statt selbst zu denken. Aber PLATO und DES CARTES wenden sich an verbindlich mitdenkende Leser und die Kritik der Vernunft ist nicht als Dokument des geistigen Adels eines groBen Mannes oder als Ausdruck einer Epoche geschrieben, sondern als Lehre. Die drei Antinomieen der Vernunft z. B. wollen gewiB als eine kri tische Entdeckung gelten und es ist nimt von vorne herein klar, daB diese Absicht keine Rlicksicht verdient. Welche Bedeutung hat die Wissenschaftlichkeit flir die Philosophie? Konnen wir sie zurockgewinnen, sollten wir es und wie. (shrink)

Recent research on “psychotherapy” in Greek philosophy has not been fully integrated into thinking about philosophy as a way of life molded by personal relationships. This article focuses on how the enigma of Socratic eros sustains a network of thought experiments in the fourth century BCE about interpersonal dynamics and psychical transformation. It supplements existing work on Plato's Symposium and Phaedrus with comparative material from Aeschines of Sphettus, Xenophon, and the dubiously Platonic Alcibiades I and Theages. In order to select (...) and illuminate commonalities among all of these, it also draws critically upon Jacques Lacan's psychoanalytic technique and his numerous comparisons between Socrates and psychoanalysts. What emerges is a more complex and qualified but no less sincere appreciation for the ideal of reflective, cooperative aspiration toward Beauty portrayed in Plato's dialogues. (shrink)

Im Ausgang von Ernst Cassirers methodischen Überlegungen zur Geschichtsschreibung werden dichterische, ästhetische und künstlerische Intentionen der geschichtlichen Darstellung bei David Hume, Wilhelm von Humboldt, Heinrich von Treitschke, Benedetto Croce und Hayden White hinsichtlich ihrer Möglichkeiten und Gefahren nachgezeichnet. Die Abhandlung schließt mit kritischen Stellungnahmen von Thomas Nipperdey und Joachim Fest zur gegenwärtigen Geschichtsschreibung. Zur Diskussion steht, ob die Aufnahme ästhetischer Kriterien in die Geschichtsschreibung den Anspruch einlösen kann, Wahrheit in der Geschichte darzustellen, ob diese Kriterien nicht eher zu einer Abschwächung (...) und Verdunkelung dieses Anspruchs beitragen, und ob nicht vielmehr davon auszugehen ist, daß sich ästhetische und wissenschaftliche Kategorien geschichtlicher Darstellung gegenseitig ausschließen.
