The idea at the core of the New Mechanical account of explanation can be summarized in the claim that explaining means showing ‘how things work’. This simple motto hints at three basic features of Mechanistic Explanation (ME): ME is an explanation-how, that implies the description of the processes underlying the phenomenon to be explained and of the entities that engage in such processes. These three elements trace a fundamental contrast with the view inherited from Hume and later from strict logical (...) empiricism (see Creath 2017), focused on epistemic and formal features of science and according to which issues concerning the kind of entities and processes that lie within a theory’s domain are extraneous to science and belong instead to ontology or metaphysics. Philosophers belonging to the new mechanical philosophy believe that the received view of scientific explanation (Hempel 2001), pivoting on the notion of law of nature, overshadows this insight. Since its origin in the 17th century, mechanical philosophy aimed to explain natural phenomena by reducing them to mechanisms. Traditional attempts to define the concept of mechanism involved the identification of a limited set of fundamental elements as, for instance, contact action, action at a distance, inertial motion (see e.g. Hesse 2005), and, more recently, transmission of a mark, or of a conserved quantity (see Frisch, this volume). The new mechanical philosophy rejects this austere characterization of mechanisms and mechanistic explanation and aim at providing a novel, philosophically rigorous explication of the concept of mechanism and of its role in scientific explanation and practice. ME has been adopted with profit in philosophy of special sciences (for instance in biomedical sciences, e.g. in the explanation of chemical transmission at synapses ((Machamer, Darden and Craver 2000), MDC henceforth); but also in social sciences, e.g. the three kinds of social mechanisms in Coleman’s analysis of Max Weber’s account of the role of the Protestant ethic in the growth of capitalism (Hedström and Swedberg 1998)), where exceptionless regularities are rarely ever found. In physics, it is generally possible to formulate explanations in law-based form, with the result that the plurality of explanatory forms might be overlooked. This should not come as a surprise, given that physics was the main inspiration for logical empiricists, and, in particular, Newtonian physics was a template for Hempel’s formulation of the covering law model. However, this situation is unfortunate, since, we will argue, knowing how things work is often part of the explanation of physical phenomena. In this chapter, we provide an introduction to the basic features of ME, with specific focus on its application to physics (section 1). The main part of the chapter is devoted to the defence of two theses: on the one hand, some domains of physics are not compatible with mechanistic reasoning and explanation (section 2); on the other hand, a comprehensive account of explanation in physics can’t dispense with ME (section 3). Traditional normative realists are committed to the idea that different individuals manage to pick out on the very same property with terms like ‘morally right’, despite variations in their understanding and use of the term. How is this possible? In this chapter, we sketch a metasemantic account that promises to vindicate traditional normative realism within a broadly rationalist framework. We will first introduce a metasemantic principle that ties reference determination to what is justifiable from the perspective of the conceptually competent (...) subject. This type of metasemantic approach has been andstill is the most influential general model of reference determination. We explain how this metasemantic principle can help vindicate something close to the traditional rationalist claim that normative truths can be known a priori. We will then show how an anti-individualist version of this principle can handle the problem of radical disagreement among competent speakers. Finally, we explain how the principle can help to vindicate the traditional rationalist thesis that moral requirements entail valid reasons for action. (shrink)

The term “Anthropocene” is frequently used to refer to the present planetary epoch, characterized by a geological signature of human activities, which have led to global ecological crises. This paper probes at what it means to be human on earth now, using healing as a concept to orient humanity in relation to other species, and particularly medicinal plants. Donna Haraway’s concept of the “Chthulucene” is used as an alternate lens to the Anthropocene, which highlights the inextricable linkages between humans and (...) other-than-human species. Healing can be viewed as a type of embodied orientation or engagement with the world, which has the potential to reach across boundaries of the skin, blur distinctions between self and other, and allow for both transpersonal and trans-species reconciliation. I focus my attention on Indigenous Shipibo healing rituals, and Shipibo concepts of healing that integrate humans within the ecosystem, and traverse species boundaries through communication with and embodiment of plant spirits. These healing rituals offer ways of coming into being within an ecology of selves—both internal and external, human and non-human—through listening and lending voice. I explore the potential for healing and ritual to work as a form of porous resistance through the internal blurring of binaries and hierarchical structures. (shrink)

Resumo Entre 1988 e 1993, Iúri M. Lótman formulou algumas proposições sobre “a voz da massa anônima”: uma voz coletiva que, em certas situacões ligadas a crises de caráter cultural, é portadora de paixões violentas que podem produzir interferências profundas no curso da história. Em seus últimos trabalhos, o semioticista russo postulou, diante disso, a noção de uma semiótica das emoções como objeto de estudo para entender a dinâmica cultural, em especial de períodos tidos como revolucionários ou de transição, a (...) saber, quando a massa anônima é capaz de manipular os eventos ou quando, revendo o passado, confere aos eventos uma interpretação distorcida. Lótman focalizou, principalmente, a relação entre as grandes fraturas históricas, os mecanismos de autopropagação do medo e a criação cultural de bodes expiatórios. O presente estudo visa abordar a reflexão de Lótman sobre perseguição, com especial atenção à figura da mulher durante o fenômeno de caça às bruxas. ABSTRACT Between 1988 and 1993, Yuri Lotman composed a series of reflections on “the voice of the anonymous mass”: a collective voice that, in particular situations linked to a cultural crisis, is the bearer of striking passions, which can deeply influence history. In his late works, the Russian semiotician postulated, therefore, the idea of a semiotics of emotions as an object of study to understand the dynamics of culture, especially during periods perceived as revolutionary or transitional―namely, when the anonymous mass manipulates the events or, when looking back, gives them a distorted interpretation. Lotman focused in particular on the relationship between great historical fractures, the self-propagating mechanisms of fear, and the cultural creation of scapegoats. This paper is devoted to framing Lotman’s reflection on persecution, paying particular attention to women during the phenomenon of the witch hunt. (shrink)

This article explores the British anti-slavery writings of the mid- to late 18th century, and the meanings which they gave to the idea of owning a property in the person. It addresses the construction of a particular moral and political landscape where freedom was understood as both a kind of property and as non-domination, and slavery was constructed as a form of theft, and as the exercise of arbitrary power. This created a complex moral space, where possession, commerce, savagery, tyranny (...) and the emergence of race were all caught up with each other and entangled with the concept of consent. The article concludes with the suggestion that our current understandings of slavery continue to be informed by our notions of contract and consent, and so by conceptions of freedom and ownership that take us back to the tensions and debates of the 18th century. This interview covers topics related to Everyday Aesthetics and confirms the multi-faceted, rich and inclusive environment surrounding Nino Migliori,1 both as a human being and as a photographer. In particular, the experience from some of his workshops reveal how such concepts as space and time, playing and experiencing, amplify and broaden the classic definition of Everyday Aesthetics provided by field literature.2 More generally, this approach also provides a cue to conduct an aesthetic analysis that is free from judgments in taste. (...) This means considering Migliori’s photographic gesture within an everyday life aesthetic perspective and proposing that it is analyzed along a pragmatic course. The study described in this article examines whether wives' relative resources and material conditions affect husbands' domestic labor within varying economic development contexts. The study tests: whether wives' relative resources increase husbands' regularity of housework participation and whether the effects of wives' relative resources on husbands' regularity of housework participation vary in quantity and effect at different levels of economic development. The study indicates that wives' material conditions and relative resources have no consistent, significant effects on husbands' regularity of housework (...) participation. Este trabajo surge de la tesis de Maestría en Educación Superior denominada "El campo de la Tecnología Educativa en los planes de estudio de la carrera de Ciencias de la Educación de la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras, Universidad Nacional de Cuyo". Allí se analizan los sentidos plasmados en los planes de estudio y en las prácticas de los docentes que formaron parte del campo. Aquí, trabajamos específicamente los hallazgos en los planes de estudio, desde una perspectiva hermenéutico-interpretativa, realizando un (...) estudio longitudinal, desde la creación de la carrera, en 1986, hasta el año 2009. En este artículo ponemos especial hincapié en cómo se refleja en los planes de estudio y en el campo de la Tecnología Educativa, la influencia de los macro y micro contextos de cada época histórica, marcando rupturas y continuidades en el significado que se le atribuyó a dicho campo dentro de la carrera de Ciencias de la Educación. When R is a recursive real closed field this yields the decidability of the theory of free modules. Where it makes sense, we address the same questions for continuous definable functions in o-minimal expansions of a real closed field. From the free module case we are able to deduce generalisations of some results to arbitrary modules over the ring. The field of ethics is enjoying a much-needed renaissance. Traditional theories and approaches are appropriately coming under fire, although not every new idea will stand time's test. Feminist thinking suggests that we at least emphasize the importance of women and their interests, focus on issues specially affecting women, rethink fundamental assumptions, incorporate feminist insights and conclusions from other areas, and be consistent with respect to our concerns about equality by paying attention to race and class.

Little is known about how researchers view ethically salient aspects of human studies. As part of a National Institutes of Mental Health-funded study, the authors performed a confidential written survey to assess the attitudes, views, and experiences of researchers with institutional review board approved protocols at the University of New Mexico. A total of 363 researchers (57% response rate) participated. Investigators overall held favorable views of general ethical aspects of research and ethics-based safeguards, and they identified a positive role of (...) ethics training. Investigators with more experience encountering ethical problems (p < .001), more ethics training (p = .001), and a PhD or MD/PhD (p = .003) held more favorable general ethical perspectives. Women investigators (p < .03), nonphysician investigators (p < .001), those whose training had been helpful in resolving ethical dilemmas (p = .006), and those for whom spirituality is important (p = .008) more strongly endorsed ethical safeguards. Investigators perceive the scientific and ethical aspects of their work as valuable and linked, and they affirm the role of safeguards in human studies. Formal ethics preparation and training initiatives were also viewed positively by investigators. (shrink)

IntroductionIn the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, Romanian universities switched to emergency relocation and online education, with students experiencing a sense of isolation, which affected their well-being, pace and normal learning style, relationships with other colleagues, and Professors. Beyond the technological obstacles that have arisen in learning, the aim of this study is to highlight the psychological variables that are associated and that explain the self-perceived well-being of students, in university, in the pandemic. The psychological variables studied were the following: the (...) level of openness and personal autonomy, as personality traits of students but also the mechanisms for regulating their academic motivation.MethodWe used a questionnaire-based survey, wherein all four research instruments had been validated and adapted to the investigated population. The subjects were BA and MA students at the University of Oradea, Romania, the majority being females with the age range of 27 years old. Pearson Correlation and Multiple Linear Regression were used to test the two hypotheses.ResultsResearch data obtained in the correlation analysis, point out association relationships with moderate and high effects size, between positive attitude toward self, others and student life and: openness to learning, openness to aesthetics, behavioral autonomy, cognitive autonomy, intrinsic motivation, and identification motivation. Furthermore, in regression analysis, it was revealed that regarding the variance of results concerning students’ self-perceived well-being in university, it contributes both of students’ personality traits and their intrinsic motivation and identification motivation.ConclusionThe fundamental conclusion of the research is that, although the personality traits of students explain in a higher percentage the variability of results in students’ self-perceived well-being, motivation regulation mechanisms play an important role, especially in the conditions of online activities. The results have direct implications for the work carried out in universities. The educational policies developed by specialists and government will have to emphasize the ways of forming resilient student communities in periods of sudden transition and adaptation to change which take place in education and society. Tomando 1968 como punto de inflexión que anticipa el endurecimiento creciente de la política cultural de la Revolución Cubana, el artículo se propone dos objetivos. Por un lado, reconstruir las condiciones sociales de producción de las prácticas simbólicas entre 1968 y 1971. Dichas condiciones resultaron, fundamentalmente, de los marcos normativos dictados por las instituciones culturales (la Unión de Escritores y Artistas Cubanos, las declaraciones emanadas de los congresos de 1968 y 1971) tanto como de las propias prácticas de los funcionarios (...) de esas instituciones (por ejemplo, de su modo de entender qué obras merecían ser premiadas o expulsadas de la ciudad letrada). Por otro, ver de qué manera estas condiciones reguladoras de la producción simbólica fueron desafiadas por y en dos obras ocultadas por sus autores que trabajan en torno a lo indecible: Una caja de zapatos vacía (1968), de Virgilio Piñera, y El central (fundación) (1970), de Reinaldo Arenas. Desde el punto de vista metodológico, el análisis se funda en la sociología de la cultura y en la crítica literaria. (shrink)

Currently, millions of minors are being inoculated against SARS-CoV-2 in many countries in the world. Ethical concerns about clinical research involving children have barely been addressed in the literature, despite the fact that the paediatric population is particularly vulnerable within this context. Children should be included in the research plans for COVID-19 vaccines. Nevertheless, it is necessary to critically assess to what extent clinical trials are being conducted according to methodological and ethical criteria that allow us to conclude that the (...) results are valid and, in consequence, how far the vaccination plans for children are scientifically justified.The principal aim of this article is to analyse critically the process of clinical research on COVID-19 vaccines involving children, highlighting the ethical concerns that arise, including the need to stratify the results from older adolescents separately for analysis before proceeding, if further research is warranted, in descending age order. The development of COVID-19 vaccines is examined, with a special look at the participation of children throughout their clinical development, including a review of the clinical trials registered in three international databases. We also offer some additional considerations about the inclusion of minors in vaccination plans. Finally, we conclude with some recommendations, with particular emphasis on the following ethical duties: research in children should be carried out only once the relevant research in adults has previously been conducted; issues that concern children’s needs and rights should be specifically addressed; and, therefore, the highest standards of ethical and scientific quality should be met. Apoptotic pathways have always been regarded as a key‐player in preserving tissue and organ homeostasis. Excessive activation or resistance to activation of cell death signaling may indeed be responsible for several mechanisms of disease, including malignancy and chronic degenerative diseases. Therefore, targeting apoptotic factors gained more and more attention in the scientific community and novel strategies emerged aimed at selectively blocking or stimulating cell death signaling. This is also the case for the TMEM219 death receptor, which is activated by a (...) circulating ligand, the Insulin‐like growth factor binding protein 3 (IGFBP3) and induces a caspase‐8‐dependent apoptosis of the target cells. Interestingly, stimulation of the IGFBP3/TMEM219 axis exerts an anti‐proliferative effect, while blockade of the TMEM219 deleterious signal protects TMEM219‐expressing cells of the endocrine pancreas, lung, and intestine from damage and death. Here, we summarize the most updated reports on the role of the IGFBP3/TMEM219 apoptotic axis in disease conditions, including intestinal disorders and diabetes, and we describe the advancements in designing and testing novel TMEM219‐based targeting approaches in emerging potential clinical applications. L’investigazione del testo, che pone il «valore di legge» ma che disorienta il diritto accostando al valore la «forza di legge», passa dalla sua scomposizione, dall’interrogazione delle lettere che sono depositate e custodite nei suoi anfratti, negli interstizi. Bisogna, cioè, seguire tanto l’esplicito, la superficie, quanto le tracce disseminate, talvolta nascoste, senza dimenticare che la superficie è tale per il profondo. La ricerca muove da un’opzione ermeneutica. Ogni ricerca presuppone un’ipotesi preliminare, che l’inchiesta abbia già una direzione. In principio era (...) il Verbo e il Verbo si fece carne, ma in un senso peculiare. Nella Seconda Lettera ai Corinzi, Paolo di Tarso disse che «la lettera uccide, lo spirito dà vita», opponendo la Legge cristiana, la buona novella, l’evangelo, la parola orale portata «sulle tavole di carne dei [...] cuori», alla Legge ebraica, antica, immobile, rigida, scritta «su tavole di pietra». Altrove, però, nella Lettera ai Romani, precisò: «Togliamo dunque ogni valore alla legge mediante la fede? Nient’affatto, anzi confermiamo la legge», ove la legge, a cui il valore è qui già legato da una relazione di predicazione, è la lettera giudaica e la fede è lo spirito vivente della rivelazione cristiana. Ecco che il «valore di legge» è la secolarizzazione, più o meno consapevole, di un tema messianico. E, muovendo dalla prospettiva teologica in cui la Legge “significa”, si azzarda che «la lettera uccide chi la ignora». Contro lo spettro paolino, o meglio prima del paolinismo e poi dell’agostinismo, dell’ordine nuovo dello spirito contro la antica, morta, silente, lettera, questa lettura della Legge tenta di farsi carico del peso del testo, di “valorizzarlo” e di non ridurlo a figura, a immagine di altro, ad anagogia o ad allegoria con quel tanto di nichilismo che questa porta con sé, ove la lettera assume valore ancillare. La lettera della Legge è dura, nel senso che è, teologicamente, «scrittura su tavola» ed è, nel Secolo, scrittura incisa su carta. Ha una sua fissità, seppure alterabile. La sua normatività è tutt’uno con la sua inscalfibilità, con la sua resistenza e, dunque, con la sua positività. Ma – per restare dentro l’ordine discorsivo dell’interpretazione della Scrittura – non si avanza una proposta interpretativa masoretica, che venera superstiziosamente la lettera della Scrittura originaria e men che meno il pensiero e la voce di chi la creò e rivelò. Tutto al contrario. Per dirla nel discorso dell’interpretazione delle leggi e, tra esse, della prima legge, la Costituzione, implica il testualismo, ma non nella versione soggettivistica dell’original intent, perché i testi scritti, che sono “cose”, vivono di vita propria, separata dal loro autore (o “firmatario”) e dai lettori, potenzialmente infiniti, e producono sensi e conseguenze inintenzionali. Senza arrivare alla radicale conclusione strutturalista di Roland Barthes, che già nel 1968 decretava La mort de l’auteur, perché lo impedisce – ove ritenuta applicabile alla Costituzione/legge – l’art. 12 delle preleggi che prescrive di ricavare il senso della legge fatto palese (anche) dall’intenzione del legislatore, l’autore si trasfigura in funzione (dell’autore), perde la propria individualità e intenzionalità e si confonde, si disfa, nel discorso, nell’ordine del testo. La scissione strutturalista (e non solo) tra autore e testo nella teoria costituzionale conduce difilato al rigetto delle ragioni dell’originalismo ingenuo delle intenzioni e, con esso, del mito delle origini, ma non porta affatto all’oblio del testo in nome della esclusiva normatività della unwritten o living Constitution: sostiene, anzi, il privilegio della scrittura della legge e non della voce, del corpo e non del senso. Nel mezzo, contro il dualismo tra materia e pensiero, tra il significato immanente alle lettere, “cose scritte” nel testo e il tesoro delle intenzioni di chi scrisse la Costituzione, ciò che conta è la posizione, la “incorporazione”, nel documento costituzionale, nella scrittura che si fa testo nel senso proprio di “tessuto”, del «valore di legge» che, almeno nella “lettera”, è rimasto incorrotto e che quelle lettere hanno agito sul testo che le ha accolte e il testo ha retroagito su quelle nel tempo. Le possibilità discorsive e significanti del valore di legge dipendono, cioè, strutturalmente, dal reticolo di dati interrelati e interdipendenti che lo legano seguendo la logica interna al testo costituzionale. Va da sé che la valorizzazione della (lettera della) Legge presupponga, all’origine, un sottinteso ebraico e, quindi, la lotta alla polemica paolina contro il formalismo conservatore della legge (ebraica). È una polemica simile all’accusa di conservatorismo dell’originalismo testualista. A difesa, il testualismo è conservatore o meno a seconda del testo che serve e della relazione tra il testo dell’origine e le interpretazioni che ne sono seguite. Ma, contro l’originalismo, contro la conversione del testo costituzionale in Sacra Scrittura, la lettura che qui si esperisce si apre al commento – che quel reticolo sappia analizzare – del testo, alla sua significatività mai esaurita, che annulla la concepibilità di un testo originario inteso quale testo “autentico”.
