Building Better Beings: A Theory of Moral Responsibility argues that the normative basis of moral responsibility is anchored in the effects of responsibility practices. Further, the capacities required for moral responsibility are socially scaffolded. This article considers criticisms of this account that have been recently raised by John Doris, Victoria McGeer, and Michael Robinson. Robinson argues against Building Better Beings’s rejection of libertarianism about free will, and the account of desert at stake in the theory. considers methodological questions that arise (...) from the account of desert, providing some additional resources for thinking about these issues within the framework of the account. Der Mensch sei von Natur aus politisch, sagt Aristoteles, nur im geordneten Gemeinwesen der Polis finde er seine Bestimmung. Seit der Antike dient die menschliche Natur zur Legitimierung sehr verschiedener, keineswegs 'natürlicher' politischer Ordnungen. In historischen Fallstudien vom Alten Orient bis zur Frühen Neuzeit untersuchen die Beiträge, wie das Verhältnis von Menschennatur und politischer Ordnung gedacht und dargestellt wurde, welche normative Kraft es entfaltete, welche Hierarchien, Machtverhältnisse und Herrschaftsformen es stützte und wo es an seine Grenzen stieß. Denn nicht allein (...) Ordnung, sondern auch ihr Gegenteil kann als naturhaft identifiziert werden. In der Geschichte der politischen Anthropologie zeigt sich der Rekurs auf Natur als ebenso wirkmächtig wie ambivalent. Gerade ihre Bruchlinien und Widersprüche machen vormoderne Auseinandersetzungen um das Verhältnis von Menschennatur und politischer Ordnung für heutige Diskussionen interessant. (shrink)

Conceptual atomism of this type is incompatible with many other semantic approaches. One of these approaches is justificationist semantics. This book assumes conceptual atomism.

This essay characterizes a version of internal realism. In §1 I will argue that for semantical reasons we should be realists of a strong kind. In §2 I plead for an internalistic setting of realism starting from the thesis that truth is, at least, not a non-epistemic concept. We have to bear the consequences of this in form of a more complicated concept of truth. The ‘internal’ of ‘internal realism’ points to the justification aspect of truth. The ‘realism’ of ‘internal (...) realism’ points to the correspondence aspect. A thesis concerning the irreducibility of the two aspects will be established in §3. (shrink)

Within the philosophy of logic there has been an old debate about strengths and weaknesses of so-called “deviant” logics, as compared to standard logic (i.e. First Order Logic with Identity). With the development of a multitude of many-valued and modal logical systems and the various ways they can be employed in various fields of philosophy, linguistics and computer science, former “deviant” logics have become well accepted. Nowadays we seem to have a new and almost contrary debate about whether there is (...) any universal logic at all or only a multitude of systems: logical pluralism. En el presente escrito busco esclarecer las dificultades a las que se enfrenta la metafísica de Spinoza, a la luz de su contexto histórico intelectual. En particular, exploro cómo el desarrollo del concepto de grados de perfección en la escolástica tardía ejerce una fuerte influencia en el pensamiento espinosista, hasta el punto de arrojarlo a una serie de dificultades, en las que el horizonte cualitativo de la realidad se confunde con el cuantitativo. De este modo, el proyecto de naturalización de (...) Dios de Spinoza no parece solventar completamente el problema del abismo relacional que hay entre una entidad absolutamente infinita y los compuestos finitos procedentes de ella. (shrink)

La desaparición de la idea de progreso en el pensamiento postilustrado constituye uno de los convencimientos centrales del entramado de tópicos que forman el imaginario social contemporáneo. Pero dicho convencimiento, en cierto modo presente desde los orígenes de la propia tradición ilustrada, da lugar a efectos discursivos de considerable importancia, a una particular modalidad de efectos perversos en materia de pensamiento, no siempre suficientemente aquilatados al certificar dicha desaparición.

This article explores how citizen participation was methodologically devised and materially articulated in the postdisaster reconstruction of Constitución, one of the most affected cities after the earthquake and tsunami that battered south central Chile in 2010. I argue that the techniques deployed to engineer the participation were arranged as a policy experiment where a particular type of public was provoked—one characterized by its emotional detachment, political engagement, and social tolerance. The case of Constitución, however, also shows that this public ran (...) parallel to other forms of being a public not aligned with the experiment’s assumptions. More broadly, the article argues that while disaster studies need to acknowledge the generative capacities of public participation, science and technology studies should include disasters as a particular setting for participatory experiments. ¿De qué manera afecta el Antropoceno a la ética ecológica? Sabido es que el primero no solo da cuenta de la formidable transformación de origen antropogénico experimentada por los sistemas planetarios, sino que de paso constata que el impacto humano sobre la Tierra es menos un accidente o contingencia que la consecuencia inevitable del modo de ser de la especie. Este artículo explorará las consecuencias que la actual emergencia planetaria tiene para la ética ecológica, arguyendo que la ausencia del sujeto (...) político "humanidad" incrementa la importancia de un comportamiento individual que está, agregación mediante, en la raíz del cambio climático y demás manifestaciones del Antropoceno. Se defenderá la idea de que la virtud más importante para el ciudadano ecológico es la virtud epistémica de la reflexividad o autoconciencia, cuyo resultado habrá de ser la formación de una subjetividad planetaria orientada a la sostenibilidad y, idealmente, a la reparación de las relaciones de la humanidad con el mundo natural. En contra de una interpretación separatista, este artículo aboga por la existencia de una unidad entre la filosofía teórica y la filosofía práctica del bien en Aristóteles; al mismo tiempo, sugiere que su investigación se realice teniendo en cuenta la manera como se corresponden dos principios del pensamiento aristotélico: por un lado, el bien y la justicia no son cualidades necesarias , que es la tesis de los escritos teóricos; y, por otro, no hay manera de adquirir el bien para (...) el hombre, sino a través de la virtud, que es un hábito selectivo de lo bueno conforme a la razón –que es la tesis de los escritos prácticos. En el análisis de estos principios y su relación se descubre un tema más de fondo en la filosofía aristotélica: el concepto formal de bien es insuficiente para hacer bueno a un hombre, aunque no pueda ser suprimido en la explicación de su carácter moral. Against a separatist interpretation, this paper argues for the existence of a unity between Aristotle's theoretical and practical philosophy of goodness. At the same time, it suggests that this unity should be discovered in the correspondence of two principles: the goodness and justice are predicated according to more and less, which is the principle of his theoretical or logical writings and the principle saying that the only way to get a good end is through virtue, which is a selective habit of good things according to reason –which is the thesis of his practical treatises. The analysis of these two principles and their relations discovers a deeper issue in Aristotelian philosophy: the formal concept of goodness is insufficient to make good a man, although it cannot be suppressed in the explanation of the moral character of man. While applying general ethical principles and reasoning to the dilemmas presented by the development of nanotechnology is often useful and always legitimate, we also need to find a way to bridge the gap between general principles and the specific issues that arise from the development of individual nanotechnologies. Drawing inspiration from pragmatist thinking, a useful strategy is to focus on the links between the epistemological, political and social representations of a particular case. Using the example of a nanotechnological house, this (...) paper analyzes the problematic connections between scientific knowledge, technical expertise, decision-making and public engagement in nanotechnology representational networks. El derecho a la privacidad está en el centro de muchos de los debates públicos actuales. Sin embargo, a pesar de la extensa literatura filosófica y jurídica sobre el tema, no contamos con una explicación adecuada del sentido y del valor de la privacidad. Esta falta de acuerdo sobre cuestiones conceptuales y normativas ha llevado a algún autor a hablar del ‘caos de la privacidad’. Este artículo se centra en la exploración conceptual de la privacidad. Para ello, en primer lugar, (...) consideraré cómo el derecho a la privacidad fue formulado por primera vez en el célebre artículo de Warren y Brandeis. Segundo, en la medida en que el derecho a la privacidad es sistemáticamente traducido en español como ‘derecho a la intimidad’, resulta crucial analizar con cuidado la confusa relación entre intimidad y privacidad. Con este fin, en las dos últimas secciones del trabajo discutiré algunas explicaciones de cómo trazar la distinción entre ambas nociones y cómo entender su intrincada relación. (shrink)

Saint Bonaventure did not write specifically on the natural law; nevertheless, interesting contributions on the issue can be derived from his theological reflection. The natural law, understood in the context of his doctrine of exemplarism, is a characterization of the interior experience, where “synderesis” appears as a fundamental faculty. Within this context, the Franciscan teacher derives a conception wherein the subject-object dialectic is overcome at several levels: epistemological, anthropological, metaphysical and moral.

Esta investigación pretende reanudar la indagación sobre el sentido. Es predominantemente teórica y cualitativa. Su objetivo, describir el fenómeno referido mediante el sentido, a partir de la usanza comunicativa. Con base en lo cual se ha querido explicar la relación que existe entre sentido y comunicación. Metodológicamente analizó la doctrina mediante lo que Peirce denominó método retroductivo, es decir, buscando la estructura lógica de sus postulados. También analizó algunos actos de habla en que se emplea la expresión sentido, y lo (...) confrontó con la doctrina sobre el sentido. El resultado es que fue definido mediante sinónimos sin un fundamento satisfactorio. Mientras que a partir del uso del sentido puede empezar a plantearse que tiene relación con la experiencia de los hablantes que los predispone a actuar de una cierta forma. Como conclusión, la comunicación es el mecanismo mediante el cual los hablantes circulan su sentido y, es mediante ella que se hace posible un cierto tipo de acción social e individual. (shrink)

Attention to the details of putatively obvious examples of philosophy-as-worldview within Latin America give us reasons to be skeptical about the taxonomy that gives us the category of philosophy-as-worldview. Among the examples that suggest difficulties for this way of thinking about the philosophical enterprise are 19th century Mexican ethnolinguistics, contemporary efforts to reconstruct historical and contemporary Indigenous thought, and 20th century efforts to articulate regional ontologies within Latin America. However, reflection on these cases also point to a different project worth (...) considering, namely, a taxonomy of wisdom- and knowledge-focused practices that might allow a different way of drawing distinctions between kinds of “philosophies”. It is sometimes instructive to reflect on a problem as it appeared before our current philosophical presumptions became ingrained. In this context, Maurice Mandelbaum’s “Determinism and Moral Responsibility” is of particular interest. Published in 1960, it appeared only a few years before the wave of work that gave us much of our contemporary understanding of moral responsibility, free will, and determinism. Mandelbaum’s account repays reconsideration. Mandelbaum argues that (1) there is an underappreciated threat to “determinist” or compatibilist accounts of responsibility, (...) and (2) this threat can be met with a suitable compatibilist account of the etiology of action. En este artículo se entremezclan las construcciones clásicas de la analogía con estructuras jurídico-positivas que se hacen hoy presentes en la interpretación y aplicación del derecho. El marco de referencia de estos vínculos no puede ser otro que el de una ontología de la relación. Una vez esclarecidas las diferentes elaboraciones doctrinales, se pretende justificar, en primer lugar, que la “analogía de proporcionalidad intrínseca”, cuyo origen se encuentra en la tradición tomista, constituye el fundamento filosófico de la “analogia iuris”, tal (...) como hoy se concibe esta figura en el ámbito de la Teoría del derecho. En segundo lugar, en este trabajo se sostiene que la “analogía de atribución intrínseca”, cuyo origen se encuentra en el genio creador del pensamiento de Suárez, constituye el fundamento filosófico de la analogía legis, tal como se encuentra actualmente regulada esta figura en el Código Civil español.
