A philosopher, rabbi, religious historian, and Gnostic, Jacob Taubes was for many years a correspondent and interlocutor of Carl Schmitt (1888-1985), a German jurist, philosopher, political theorist, law professor--and self-professed Nazi. Despite their unlikely association, Taubes and Schmitt shared an abiding interest in the fundamental problems of political theology, believing the great challenges of modern political theory were ancient in pedigree and, in many cases, anticipated the works of Judeo-Christian eschatologists. In this collection of Taubes's writings on Schmitt, the (...) two intellectuals work through ideas of the apocalypse and other central concepts of political theology. Taubes acknowledges Schmitt's reservations about the weakness of liberal democracy yet distances himself from his prescription to rectify it, arguing the apocalyptic worldview requires less of a rigid hierarchical social ordering than a community committed to the importance of decision making. In these writings, a sharper and more nuanced portrait of Schmitt's thought emerges, as well as a more complicated understanding of Taubes, who has shaped the work of Giorgio Agamben, Peter Sloterdijk, and other major twentieth-century theorists. ZusammenfassungAusgangspunkt dieses Beitrags ist die Frage, wie die vier ethischen Prinzipien äztlichen Handelns – Respekt vor der Autonomie, Wohlergehen des Patienten, Schadensvermeidung und Gleichbehandlung – in der Berufspraxis realisiert werden können. Am Arzt-Patienten-Verhältnis wird die ethische Grundlegung jedes medizinischen Handelns erläutert, die auch das Lernen aus negativen Behandlungsverläufen umfasst. Um die Möglichkeiten für solche Lernprozesse untersuchen zu können, wird vorab eine Unterscheidung zwischen Fehler und Misserfolg vorgenommen. Als Handlungsansatz zur Aufarbeitung zahnärztlicher Misserfolge wird anhand einer empirischen Studie die Methodik des (...) Triadengesprächs vorgestellt. In diesen Gesprächen wurden 21 Misserfolge aus der Praxis reflektiert und rekonstruiert. Es wird aufgezeigt, ob und wie mit der Methode ein verändertes Verständnis des zahnärztlichen Misserfolgs ermöglicht wurde. Schließlich wird das Verfahren aus der Sicht aller an der Studie beteiligten Zahnärzte evaluiert. Die Ergebnisse der Studie zeigen, dass das Triadengespräch als Möglichkeit des expansiven Lernens eine exponierte Stellung erlangen kann. Das daraus resultierende Erfahrungskapital zahnmedizinischer Praktiker hat sodann Einfluss auf das Professionswissen und lässt gleichzeitig eine offene Kultur zum Lernen aus Misserfolgen entstehen. Abschließend werden die ethischen Implikationen des Umgangs mit Misserfolgen im Kontrast zum Umgang mit Fehlern erörtert. (shrink)

ZusammenfassungDer Begriff „Ethik“ wurde vor kurzem sowohl in die zahnmedizinische Musterberufsordnung 2014 als auch in den aktuellen „Nationalen Kompetenzbasierten Lernzielkatalog Zahnmedizin“ aufgenommen. Die hier vorgelegte Studie widmet sich der Frage, welche Bedeutung dies für die zahnmedizinische Profession und die Gesellschaft hat. Zu diesem Zweck werden die gesellschaftlichen Prozesse erörtert, die durch den autonom handhabbaren Handlungsspielraum der zahnmedizinischen Profession bedingt sind. Die sozialwissenschaftlichen Diskursfelder Profession, Vertrauen, Bildung, Expertise, Handlungspraxis und Sanktion werden hierzu in ihrer Anschlussfähigkeit zueinander und als struktureller Bedeutungsrahmen professionsethisch (...) reflektierten Handelns aufgearbeitet. Basis des professionellen Handlungsspielraums ist ein gesellschaftlicher Vertrauensvorschuss, der dem professionell Handelnden seitens der Gesellschaft und seitens des einzelnen Patienten entgegengebracht wird. Die Studie kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass das jahrzehntelange Fehlen einer institutionell etablierten Vermittlung der ethischen Grundlagen des zahnmedizinischen Handelns ein schweres Versäumnis darstellt, da junge Zahnärzte nicht angeleitet werden, ihre fachliche Expertise in Bezug auf die zu lösenden Problemstellungen permanent zu reflektieren. Dieses Defizit ist nunmehr benannt worden. Eine institutionell getragene Struktur zur Bearbeitung ethischer Fragen im Rahmen der Zahnheilkunde ist hiernach zu fordern und sollte nunmehr dringend implementiert und umgesetzt werden. (shrink)

We take up the challenge of developing an international network with capacity to survey the world's scientists on an ongoing basis, providing rich datasets regarding the opinions of scientists and scientific sub-communities, both at a time and also over time. The novel methodology employed sees local coordinators, at each institution in the network, sending survey invitation emails internally to scientists at their home institution. The emails link to a ‘10 second survey’, where the participant is presented with a single statement (...) to consider, and a standard five point Likert scale. In June 2023, a group of 30 philosophers and social scientists invited 20,085 scientists across 30 institutions in 12 countries to participate, gathering 6,807 responses to the statement 'Science has put it beyond reasonable doubt that COVID-19 is caused by a virus'. The study demonstrates that it is possible to establish a global network to quickly ascertain scientific opinion on a large international scale, with high response rate, low opt-out rate, and in a way that allows for significant (perhaps indefinite) repeatability. Measuring scientific opinion in this new way would be a valuable complement to currently available approaches, potentially informing policy decisions and public understanding across diverse fields. Medical nihilism is the view that we should have little confidence in the effectiveness of medical interventions. Jacob Stegenga argues persuasively that this is how we should see modern medicine, and suggests that medical research must be modified, clinical practice should be less aggressive, and regulatory standards should be enhanced.

Robustness is a common platitude: hypotheses are better supported with evidence generated by multiple techniques that rely on different background assumptions. Robustness has been put to numerous epistemic tasks, including the demarcation of artifacts from real entities, countering the “experimenter’s regress,” and resolving evidential discordance. Despite the frequency of appeals to robustness, the notion itself has received scant critique. Arguments based on robustness can give incorrect conclusions. In the 1980s, a number of philosophers argued that perception is analog. In the ensuing years, these arguments were forcefully criticized, leaving the thesis in doubt. This paper draws on Weber’s Law, a well-entrenched finding from psychophysics, to advance a new argument that perception is analog. This new argument is an adaptation of an argument that cognitive scientists have leveraged in support of the contention that primitive numerical representations are analog. But the argument here is extended to the representation of (...) non-numerical magnitudes, such as luminance and distance, and shown to apply to perception and not just cognition. The relevant sense of ‘analog’ is also clarified, and two powerful objections are addressed. Finally, the question whether perception’s analog vehicles are located in conscious experience is explored and related to a well-known controversy within psychophysics. (shrink)

This volume is a study of the relationship between philosophy and faith in Søren Kierkegaard's Philosophical Fragments. It is also the first book to examine the role of Socrates in this body of writings, illuminating the significance of Socrates for Kierkegaard's thought. Jacob Howland argues that in the Fragments, philosophy and faith are closely related passions. A careful examination of the role of Socrates demonstrates that Socratic, philosophical eros opens up a path to faith. At the same time, the (...) work of faith - which holds the self together with that which transcends it - is essentially erotic in the Socratic sense of the term. Kant said that logic had not had to take a single step forward since Aristotle, but German Idealists in the following generation made concerted efforts to re-think the logical foundations of philosophy. In this book, Jacob McNulty offers a new interpretation of Hegel's Logic, the key work of his philosophical system. Many science teachers are presented with the challenge of characterizing science as a dynamic, human endeavour. Perspectivism, as a hermeneutic philosophy of science, has the potential to be a learning tool for teachers as they elucidate the complex nature of science. Developed earlier by Nietzsche and others, perspectivism has recently re-emerged in the context of the philosophy of science in the work of Ronald Giere. Giere presents a compelling case that scientific theories and scientific observation are perspectival by using science (...) itself. There are many tangible examples already present in science textbooks which, when approached in a certain way, offer an exciting opportunity for a realistic incorporation of philosophy of science into the classroom. Furthermore, introducing perspectivism to students necessitates an engagement with notions such as truth, reality, perception and experimentation, through a familiar medium, while painting a nuanced conception of the nature of science. This paper examines the influences which shape the tone and character of Sallie McFague’s ecotheology, while also suggesting that her theology holds immense socially transformative potential even while departing from many of the basic assumptions of traditional Christian theism. Contrary to the beliefs of majority Christianity, which most often assume the adequacy of supernatural and interventionist images of God, McFague contends that these outdated images seriously debilitate Christian agency and place our planet in peril. Changing Christian habits of thought about (...) God, therefore, may yet prove to be a necessary, though not sufficient, prerequisite to resolve our environmental plight. Ultimately, I suggest that McFague’s reconstructive theology is a significant part of a larger blossoming of immanentalist sensibilities within North American religious culture at large, and in relation to which Christian churches will have to adjust in order to survive. Part of understanding the meaning and power of algorithms means asking what new demands they might make of ethical frameworks, and how they might be held accountable to ethical standards. I develop a definition of networked information algorithms as assemblages of institutionally situated code, practices, and norms with the power to create, sustain, and signify relationships among people and data through minimally observable, semiautonomous action. Starting from Merrill’s prompt to see ethics as the study of “what we ought to do,” (...) I examine ethical dimensions of contemporary NIAs. Specifically, in an effort to sketch an empirically grounded, pragmatic ethics of algorithms, I trace an algorithmic assemblage’s power to convene constituents, suggest actions based on perceived similarity and probability, and govern the timing and timeframes of ethical action.
