Trying Out the Wheelchair: The Mutual Shaping of People and Devices through Adjustment.Myriam Winance - 2006 - Science, Technology, and Human Values 31 (1):52-72.
Focusing on the interactions between people suffering from neuromuscular diseases and their wheelchairs, the author raises the question of action: how is action made possible for people suffering from neuromuscular diseases? Starting with actor-network theory, the author shows that action not only results from distribution and delegation to heterogeneous entities but emerges from hard and lengthy work that makes the relation between them possible and transforms the entities involved. The author describes this work, called the process of adjustment, as work (...)

Breaking the Cyber-Security Dilemma: Aligning Security Needs and Removing Vulnerabilities.Myriam Dunn Cavelty - 2014 - Science and Engineering Ethics 20 (3):701-715.
Current approaches to cyber-security are not working. Rather than producing more security, we seem to be facing less and less. The reason for this is a multi-dimensional and multi-faceted security dilemma that extends beyond the state and its interaction with other states. It will be shown how the focus on the state and “its” security crowds out consideration for the security of the individual citizen, with detrimental effects on the security of the whole system. The threat arising from cyberspace to (...)

Hegel Und Die Logische Frage.Myriam Gerhard - 2015 - Boston: De Gruyter.

Music is a stimulus capable of triggering an array of basic and complex emotions. We investigated whether and how individuals employ music to induce specific emotional states in everyday situations for the purpose of emotion regulation. Furthermore, we wanted to examine whether specific emotion-regulation styles influence music selection in specific situations. Participants indicated how likely it would be that they would want to listen to various pieces of music (which are known to elicit specific emotions) in various emotional situations. Data (...)

Cancer survivors are at risk for poor subjective well-being, but the potential beneficial effect of daily spiritual experiences is unknown. Using data from the second and third wave of the Midlife in the United States study, we examined the extent to which daily spiritual experiences at baseline moderate the association between subjective well-being at baseline and approximately 10 years later in cancer survivors. Regression analyses, controlled for age, educational attainment, and religious/spiritual coping, showed that daily spiritual experiences moderated the association (...)

    A “questão social” no interc'mbio cultural francês-alemão: Gans, Marx e a recepção de Saint-Simon.Myriam Bienenstock & Hernandez Vivan Eichenberger - 2024 - Cadernos de Filosofia Alemã 29 (2):123-141.
The article reconstructs the reception of Sansimonism in Germany. To this end, it shows how Hegelianism and Sansimonism were initially confused. Carové and Gans, however, immediately sought to mark the differences between the two. In Gans' case, however, the problem of the plebs, present within Hegel's thought, led him to positively re-evaluate Sansimonism and outline an autonomous understanding of the problem of poverty. Gans' reading is characterized in contrast to Marx's.

What Eye Movements Reveal About Later Comprehension of Long Connected Texts.Rosy Southwell, Julie Gregg, Robert Bixler & Sidney K. D'Mello - 2020 - Cognitive Science 44 (10):e12905.
We know that reading involves coordination between textual characteristics and visual attention, but research linking eye movements during reading and comprehension assessed after reading is surprisingly limited, especially for reading long connected texts. We tested two competing possibilities: (a) the weak association hypothesis: Links between eye movements and comprehension are weak and short‐lived, versus (b) the strong association hypothesis: The two are robustly linked, even after a delay. Using a predictive modeling approach, we trained regression models to predict comprehension scores (...)

Most teams try to get through these admissions with as few interactions as possible.
