In the context of the end of life, many authors point out how the experience of identity is crucial for the well-being of patients with advanced disease. They define this identity in terms of autonomy, control, or dependence, associating these concepts with the sense of personal dignity. From the perspective of the phenomenology of embodiment, Kay Toombs and other authors have investigated the ways disease can impact on the subjective world of patients and have stressed that a consideration of this (...) personal world can promote understanding and recognition of their experience. Based on the findings of qualitative studies of the perception of dignity and autonomy in patients at the end of life, this analysis assesses concepts such as being-in-the-world in illness, embodiment, lived body versus objective body or the gaze of the other from a Toombsian phenomenological perspective. Although Leibniz's writing forms an enormous corpus, no single work stands as a canonical expression of his whole philosophy. In addition, the wide range of Leibniz's work--letters, published papers, and fragments on a variety of philosophical, religious, mathematical, and scientific questions over a fifty-year period--heightens the challenge of preparing an edition of his writings in English translation from the French and Latin.

This paper investigates the consequences for our understanding of physical theories as a result of the development of the renormalization group. Kadanoff's assessment of these consequences is discussed. What he called the ``extended singularity theorem'' poses serious difficulties for philosophical interpretation of theories. Several responses are discussed. The resolution demands a philosophical rethinking of the role of mathematics in physical theorizing.

The subject of this study is the special theory of relativity (SRT) by A. Einstein, the debate about which has been going on for more than a hundred years. The aim of the study is to evaluate SRT from the side of whether everything that is discussed in this theory and thus in the new, relativistic physics is possible in nature itself. At the same time, the author pays special attention to three issues: the principle of relativity, the necessary condition (...) for the objectivity of the content of scientific theories and the Einstein style of scientific thinking, which predetermined the ideological component of SRT and all relativistic physics. But such issues as relativistic reductions of lengths and durations, the relativity of simultaneity and a single space-time do not remain without attention. The study revealed the fallacy of a long-standing and widespread opinion about the relativity of properties. The necessary condition for the objectivity of scientific theories is revealed. The natural form of expression of quantities is revealed and the non-relative nature of all natural quantities is shown. The hidden form of relativity inherent in the SRT postulate about the constancy of the speed of light in all inertial reference frames and extended in SRT to the magnitude of all lengths and durations considered in it is revealed. It is shown that such relativity is based on the dependence of the quantities on the choice of their reflection systems. It is shown that such dependence is impossible in nature itself. It is concluded that the SRT is erroneous. At the same time, the factors that served as favorable ground for the emergence and spread of this erroneous theory are listed. (shrink)

The writings of the later Mohists are generally taken to contain several updates to the consequentialist ethical view held by the Mohist school. In this paper, I defend one interpretation of those updates and how they may have served, within the Mohists’ argumentative context, to make their views more defensible. I argue that we should reject A.C. Graham’s prominent interpretation, on which the later Mohists’ argumentative strategy is to develop a conception of the a priori and to ground their ethical (...) view in a form of a priori rationalism. I contend, instead, that the strength of the later Mohists’ ethical view comes largely from their adoption of a subjective criterion for identifying what counts as a benefit within their consequentialist view. I show how the adoption of this subjective criterion fits within a larger trend in later Mohist thought of coming to terms with the diversity of people’s evaluative standpoints, and further show how it equips the later Mohists with worthwhile responses to their philosophical rivals. The period of the end of the twentieth — the beginning of the twenty-first century can be called the heyday of human rights movements that advocate the inclusion of new agencies in the political, ethical, social and other fields. Among them arose the animal rights movement, which later developed into a philosophical turn called animal turn, which is now one of the most popular in the Western philosophical and anthropological discourse. Being mostly a media and popular science project, (...) animal turn has been little studied and criticized from an academic point of view. In this article, it is proposed to explore the history of the turn, its development and, most importantly, how the ideas about man, animal and their relationships changed within the framework of animal turn. The new anthropology, which also includes the turn under discussion, inextricably links the concept of man with the concept of boundary, stating it as a necessary element for the constitution of the human self. As a part of a general philosophical trend to expand the discourse of the Other, animal turn suggests to consider the animal as a universal example of Otherness, which can not only coexist with a human, but also be an integral part of his self-perception. The article proposes to consider how the transition from the recognition of animals as "also feeling" was gradually made to the idea of maximum inclusiveness, openness and hospitality. It is also proposed to critically comprehend the new concept of man as a being who strives for maximum positive harmony with himself and the material world. As examples, the texts of the most famous representatives of animal turn are analyzed: P. Singer, T. Regan, J. Derrida, B. Massumi, P. Godfrey-Smith and V. Despre. (shrink)

The article is devoted to the revision of the validity of opposing the concepts of social integration as a consensus and social disintegration as a conflict. The methodological basis is the rethinking of the back-ground assumptions of influential socio-philosophical theories proposed by T. J. Bernard. It is shown that along with the understanding of social integration as order and consolidation, and disintegration as conflict and deviation, there are also other interpretations in the structure of socio-philosophical thought. In some (...) of these interpretations, social integration characterizes ideal, not real, societies and is not related to social practice, while in others, social integration immanently includes a disintegration process. 원통한 감정은 억울함과 분함을 풀지 못해 한이 된 고통이다. 복수를 부정적인 것으로 보는 현대 철학의 전통에서, 원한의 대상을 갖는 원통함은 바람직하지 못한 것으로 취급되어왔다. 원통함이 맹목적이고 파괴적인 감정으로 평가되기에, 원통한 이는 용서함으로써 원한을 풀 것을 요구받는다. 억울하고 분한 일을 참고 견딜 수밖에 없는 상황이 맺은 원한의 감정은 사회적으로 취약한 위치에 있는 이들의 감정이라고도 할 수 있다. 이것은 원한에 관한 속담이나 설화, 소설이 주로 여성을 주인공으로 한다는 점에서도 확인된다. 이 글은 원통함이 파괴적이고 맹목적일 수 있다는 점을 부정하지 않으면서도, 동시에 그것의 건설적이고 (...) 합당한 측면이 그동안 일방적으로 무시되어 왔음에 주목한다. 따라서 이 글에서는 원통한 감정이 갖는 특징에 주목하면서, 원통함을 부정적인 것으로 보는 시선은 원통함이 전하고자 하는 진실의 주요한 측면을 외면하는 것일 수도 있음을 밝히고자 한다. 이것은 원통해하는 이들을 외면하거나 비난하기 보다는 공감으로써 이해하고자 해야 할 윤리적 책임에 관한 탐구이다. À l’aide d’une autobiographie professionnelle de soixante ans de recherche en formation continue des adultes, l’article explicite les références qui ont ancré philosophiquement la construction d’une problématique rythmoformatrice des apprentissages adultes tout au long et dans tous les secteurs de la vie. Cette construction s’est opérée sur trois périodes transatlantiques : une période initiale en Europe (1959-1969) d’entrée dans la vie adulte (20-30 ans) en recherche-formation laborieuse de sens à la vie ; une seconde au Québec (1969-1985) de conception, construction (...) et conduite de programmes de recherche en éducation permanente à la Faculté de l’éducation permanente de l’Université de Montréal (30-45 ans) ; et enfin une troisième comme professeur-chercheur à l’Université de Tours (1985-2007) en co-création de diplômes et de groupes de recherche-formation universitaire pour adultes (45- 67 ans). Deux ancrages philosophiques préscolaires – la caverne de Platon et l’Émile de Rousseau – et un ancrage postscolaire et transdisciplinaire d’une épistémologie dialectique systémique, apparaissent progressivement contribuer de façon dominante à la conceptualisation d’une problématique rythmoformatrice du cours de la vie adulte, en deux temps (expérientiel/formel) et trois mouvements (auto, socio et écoformation). The transhumanist movement has existed since the end of the 20th century and espouses the use of technology for enhancing the human condition. Due to a certain level of similarity to posthumanism, this overview of transhumanism begins with an analysis of basic terminology: transhumanism, posthumanism, the transhuman being and the posthuman being. After that, transhumanism is studied from the perspectives of different disciplines. Theatricality, as a methodological basis of Deleuze’s theory, insinuates a new thought of Being/beings by emancipating philosophy from its anthropological orientation. Despite the fact that the phenomenological methodologies attempted to link the transcendental with the empirical domain, the source of reflexivity was still the subject. Deleuze’s ontological repetition maintains the infinite reflection of the transcendental and the empirical domains into each other, yet it posits the symbolic order as the third order where the infinite reflexive expansion between concept and matter (...) becomes immanently transcended. By taking this formulation as its point of departure, this article analyzes how Deleuze’s notion of theatricality operates as the self-reflexive and excessive origin of thought. (shrink)

20세기 초 등장한 상대성 이론은 혁신적인 물리학 이론으로서, 물리학의 발전뿐만 아 니라 철학적 사유의 발전을 그 배경으로 삼고 있다. 실제로 뉴턴이 17세기 말 고전역학을 제시한 이후 시간과 공간의 본성에 관한 철학적 문제가 본격적으로 제기되었다. 흄은 시 간과 공간에 대해 인간의 지각에 기초한 경험주의적인 해석을, 칸트는 시간과 공간이 외 부 세계에 존재하는 실체가 아니라 인간의 감각 경험을 가능하게 하는 일종의 인식 형식 이라는 해석을 제시했다. 19세기 전반기에 발견되어 체계적으로 개발된 비유클리드 기하 학은 시간과 공간의 본성에 대한 인간의 이해에 중요한 변화를 가져왔다. (...) 리만과 헬름홀 츠는 기하학의 기초가 되는 가정들이 칸트가 말하는 선험적 종합 명제가 아닌 일종의 경 험적 가설들이며, 물리 세계에 적용되는 기하학의 핵심에는 길이 단위를 측정하는 도구 가 공간 속을 이동하면서 보이는 행태에 대한 가설이 놓여 있다고 보았다. 푸앵카레는 리 만과 헬름홀츠가 제시한 논의의 연장선상에서, 물리학에서 사용되는 기하학과 물리학의 가장 기초적인 법칙들은 필연적 법칙도 아니고 경험적 사실도 아닌 일종의 규약이라는 관점을 제시했다. 마흐는 뉴턴이 제시한 절대적 시간 및 공간 개념을 경험주의적 관점에 서 강하게 비판하고 관계론적 관점에 기반하여 뉴턴에 대항하는 사고 실험을 제시함으로 써, 향후 경험적 사실들에 기초한 관계론적 물리학이 발전할 수 있는 방향을 제시했다. 아인슈타인의 상대성 이론은 전자기학의 발달 및 전자기적 관점과 역학적 관점 사이의 모순이라는 물리학적 맥락뿐만 아니라, 이상과 같은 시간과 공간에 관한 철학적 논의의 맥락 속에서 등장할 수 있었던 물리학 이론이었다. 따라서 상대성 이론의 철학적 의의를 이해하기 위해서는 이상과 같은 이 이론의 철학적 배경을 정확하게 점검할 필요가 있다. The article examines the ethical and socio-political rationales behind France’s decision to sign the armistice with Nazi Germany in June 1940. Subsequent to the defeat, France confronted a binary choice: capitulation or armistice. Capitulation would have entailed responsibility falling on the military; in contrast, in the case of the armistice, it fell on civilian authority. Unlike capitulation, which did not bind civilian governance and remained an exclusively military action, the armistice extended the suspension of hostilities across territories under French sovereignty. (...) In practical terms, capitulation would have allowed France’s legal government to continue the war from other locations, whereas the armistice strictly prohibited such actions. Despite these constraints, France chose the armistice in an attempt to shield its populace from Nazi atrocities. However, this protection ultimately proved illusory. The article contends that the subsequent delegation of full constituent powers to Marshal Pétain deepened societal divisions between collaborationists and members of the Resistance. Contrary to popular belief, General de Gaulle mythologized the Resistance after the war not merely to glorify it but also to alleviate national tensions and position France among the victors of World War II. Reflecting upon the experience of French history, the article concludes on the political and social consequences of decisions regarding war and peace, contingent upon whether political or military leadership assumes the responsibility. In a recent article, Fabian Freyenhagen argues that we should understand first-generation Frankfurt School critical theory (in particular, the work of Adorno and Horkheimer) as being defined by a kind of ‘linguistic turn’ analogous to one present in the later Wittgenstein. Here, I elaborate on this hypothesis – initially by calling it into question, by detailing Herbert Marcuse’s extensive criticisms of Wittgenstein (and other analytic philosophers of language) in One-Dimensional Man. While Marcuse is harshly critical of analytic ordinary language philosophy, (...) he is much more sympathetic to a different sort of ordinary language philosophy, which he unpacks with reference to Karl Kraus. I show how, by getting Marcuse’s criticisms of Wittgenstein and other analytic philosophers, and lauding of Kraus, into view, we can better understand the first generation of the Frankfurt School as having practised a sort of ‘non-quietistic’ philosophical therapy (that may or may not have been the sort of thing that Wittgenstein himself had in mind). The dissertation analyzes the ontological and epistemological arguments that motivate Plato's theory of Forms.

Various studies have shown that philosophizing with children at school can have a positive effect on cognitive, language and social skills. However, previous studies have not considered how the quality of the dialogue influences these outcomes. Addressing this gap, our article introduces a high-inference rating instrument to assess the quality of philosophical dialogue. This instrument features four quality dimensions: Philosophical Richness, Co-construction, Focus, and Restrained Facilitation. It was applied to evaluate 63 class dialogues from a Swiss study involving (...) secondary-school students. The article presents the instrument using excerpts from the study, along with initial validation information, showing its reliability in measuring philosophical dialogue quality. The significance of this research lies in its focus on the quality of philosophical dialogue, an aspect often overlooked in educational settings. By providing a tool to assess this quality, we open up new pathways for analyzing the effectiveness of philosophical dialogues in schools. This is especially relevant as educational systems increasingly recognize the importance of developing students' critical thinking and discussion skills. The findings highlight the potential of high-quality philosophical dialogues to enrich students' educational experiences and offer insights for educators and researchers into enhancing these interactions. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of how philosophical dialogue can be used as a powerful educational tool, not just for engaging students but for fostering meaningful and impactful learning. A discussion of how making a decision about religious belief places this kind of belief in a category which distinguishes it from 'belief in other minds' or 'belief in an external world'. This has important consequences for a philosophical approach to religious belief.

Judgment, as a word, means a critical evaluation of a person, situation or object, judgment, by resorting to ways such as comprehension, comparison, evaluation. As a philosophical concept, judgment is accepted as the ability to make good, sound and correct decisions as the product of an intellectual activity that determines the true or falsehood of any proposition. In Ancient Ancient Greece, the subject of judgment regarding the subject of absolute truth or truth without being subject to time and space (...) caused fierce debates among sophists, skeptics, Socrates/Plato and Aristotle. While the basis of judgments was determined by "dogmas" in the Middle Ages, in Descartes, who is accepted as the founder of the modern period, judgment corresponds to a thinking activity that establishes relations between the data in question based on observable data. The important issue that manifests in the understanding of judgment in the modern period is that it is necessary to take into account that judgments are always given in a mode/state. The concept of judgment is reconsidered by Kant and given a different form. The concept of judgment, which continued to be the subject of discussion after Kant, is seen to be handled in a pluralistic manner, in the form of a judgment free from ideas, origins and representations, and suitable for each event, which requires the inability to reach any definite judgment or avoid definite judgments in the postmodern period. In this study, we will discuss the meanings attributed to the concept of judgment as a philosophical concept in its journey in the history of thought and the discussions on the subject. In the introduction, we will include the concept of judgment, Aristotle's approach to the concept of judgment and the religious judgments of the Middle Ages. In the modern era, Kant's approach to judgment and postmoderns' understanding of judgment will constitute our main subject. (shrink)

In her first book, _Cross-Cultural Existentialism: On the Meaning of Life in Asian and Western Thought_, Leah Kalmanson draws on a wide range of Asian ritual and philosophical repertoires in making a case for the role of practical exercises of self-cultivation in the work of existential inquiry.
