Liking and respect are postulated as two dimensions of interpersonal attitudes. Liking-disliking is an idiosyncratic response which depends mostly on how target persons influence interests and well-being of the attitude holder and is accompanied by beliefs in their communal traits. Respect-disrespect is a socially shared response which depends mostly on the social status of target persons and is accompanied by beliefs in their agency. This Self-interest /status Model of differences between liking and respect was tested in two studies. Research has shown that cheating is perceived as immoral when it serves the cheater’s interests, though it can be seen as moral when it serves the interests of the perceiver. However, are such biased moral judgments real, or are they merely lip service? To answer the question of whether biased moral judgments actually inform behavior, the authors asked participants to observe a confederate who either cheated for money or did not cheat, which benefited either the confederate alone or both the (...) confederate and the participating observer. Then, participants evaluated the confederate and, finally, played a one shot trust game with her. Cheating influenced moral judgments and decreased behavioral trust, but this only occurred when self-interest was not involved. When self-interest was involved, participants showed no significant differences in trust levels, independent of whether the confederate had cheated or not. Implications for the dual process theory in moral psychology are discussed. (shrink)

Saying is experiencing: Affective consequences of complaining and affirmation In four experiments mood was measured before and after complaining or affirmation. Participants complained or affirmed either themselves or listened to such communications of another person. Mood decreased after complaining and increased after affirmation — a "saying is experiencing" effect. This effect was found also in the cognitive load condition suggesting that automatic mood contagion underlies the SIE effect rather than mechanisms based on self-perception or self-awareness. Appropriateness of a topic for (...) complaining appeared a boundary condition of the SIE effect: When a topic was considered by participants the most appropriate for complaining, the act of showing dissatisfaction with the topic led to mood improvement. An interview with Wiesław Chrzanowski, a member of the Home Army’s “Gustaw” unit. Chrzanowski recounts the political situation in Europe at the time and the Soviet Union’s and Allies’ stance towards the Warsaw Uprising. He is also critical towards the uprising’s commanders, who launched it without adequate preparation.

First, we prove that the lattice of all structural strengthenings of a given strongly finite consequence operation is both atomic and coatomic, it has finitely many atoms and coatoms, each coatom is strongly finite but atoms are not of this kind — we settle this by constructing a suitable counterexample. Second, we deal with the notions of hereditary: algebraicness, strong finitisticity and finite approximability of a strongly finite consequence operation. Third, we formulate some conditions which tell us when the lattice (...) of all structural strengthenings of a given strongly finite consequence operation is finite, and subsequently we give some applications of them. Research on natural and artificial brains is proceeding at a rapid pace. However, the understanding of the essence of consciousness has changed slightly over the millennia, and only the last decade has brought some progress to the area. Scientific ideas emerged that the soul could be a product of the material body and that calculating machines could imitate brain processes. This article shows the organization of distance learning, particularly the idea of b-learning, combining the accomplishment of classes carried on in the traditional way and via computers. The authors present learning activities related to complementary education herein. Some of these course types may be successfully adapted to an e-learning background. The models and structure of the university virtual environment for distance learning are described. These illustrate a new approach to creating a virtual space for medical and technical studies where e-learning (...) courses are created to be used for distance education, which allows students to be taught more effectively. The projected virtual courses for different groups of students ensure individualization of students’ work, which could be a relevant element for creating the shortest path of development of professional competencies. This paper further includes a brief overview of technologies used to build interactive elements into learning mate- rials. The authors present the use of interactive elements in medical education based on examples of certain selected games and animations. (shrink)

We investigate the existence of perfect homogeneous sets for analytic colorings. An analytic coloring of X is an analytic subset of [X]N, where N>1 is a natural number. We define an absolute rank function on trees representing analytic colorings, which gives an upper bound for possible cardinalities of homogeneous sets and which decides whether there exists a perfect homogeneous set. We construct universal σ-compact colorings of any prescribed rank γ<ω1. These colorings consistently contain homogeneous sets of cardinality γ but they (...) do not contain perfect homogeneous sets. As an application, we discuss the so-called defectedness coloring of subsets of Polish linear spaces. (shrink)

El resultado de este proceso es la reducción de la democracia a meros procedimientos. Esto puede llevar a la tiranía de la mayoría democrática. Los procedimientos democráticos requieren valores fundamentales que son la base del consenso social, el acuerdo y la cooperación (...) para el bien común. El Cristianismo es una fuente importante de estos valores. The purpose of this paper is to present some of the findings (which were reported on more extensively in earlier work) regarding the visibility of gender issues in the literature on selected information and communication technologies (ICTs) with a view to make predictions about potential ethical issues that the application of these ICTs may bring about in the future. On the basis of the analysis of around 100 published sources, which dealt with various aspects of selected ICTs, conclusions have been (...) drawn regarding gender issues and concerns that the applications of these ICTs may cause. The authors' analysis is theoretically informed by critical discourse analysis (CDA) which assumes that texts, both written and spoken, as well as other forms of symbolic representations, are indicative of social practices. Of particular methodological relevance was the survey of methods of text and discourse analysis presented in Titscher et al and especially the application of keyword search as a way to measure the prominence of each investigated method. This approach to literature surveying proved very useful in selecting analytic material: only those published sources on the selected four ICTs have been included in the survey, for which the analysis of keywords, abstracts and indexes of terms indicated authors' interest in gender issues. Findings - First, ICTs such as affective computing, ambient intelligence, and artificial intelligence, have been found to have the potential of positively affecting gender power relations and thus positively affecting gender balance in the areas of labour market related to ICT across EU countries and worldwide. Second, more research on the relationship between gender and ICT design, application and representation is needed, so as to enhance a better understanding of ethical issues resulting from unequal participation of women and men in all aspects of ICT production and implementation, which in itself is an ethical dilemma with which both the ICT business and legislators have to grapple. The paper offers insight into the relationship between the level of attention devoted to particular ICTs by ICT researchers, as evidenced in the reviewed literature, and the likelihood of the application of a particular ICT in the future, which is looked at and assessed from a gender perspective. The categorical dualities presented are: (first) for the category of bi-algebraic lattices that belong to the variety generated by the smallest non-modular lattice with complete (0,1)-lattice homomorphisms as morphisms, and (second) for the category of non-trivial (0,1)-lattices belonging to the same variety with (0,1)-lattice homomorphisms as morphisms. Although the two categories coincide on their finite objects, the presented dualities essentially differ mostly but not only by the fact that the duality for the second category uses topology. Using the presented dualities (...) and some known in the literature results we prove that the Q-lattice of any non-trivial variety of (0,1)-lattices is either a 2-element chain or is uncountable and non-distributive. The aim of this paper is to propose a criterion of finite detachment-substitutional formalization for normal modal systems. The criterion will comprise only those normal modal systems which are finitely axiomatizable by means of the substitution, detachment for material implication and Gödel rules.

We prove that each intermediate or normal modal logic is strongly complete with respect to a class of finite Kripke frames iff it is tabular, i.e. the respective variety of pseudo-Boolean or modal algebras, corresponding to it, is generated by a finite algebra.

W historii filozofii występują dwa przeciwstawne ujęcia ludzkiego istnienia. 1. Filizofie esencjalistyczne, które upatrują istotę człowieka w spójności i harmonii Jego bytu, równowadze zewnętrznej i wewnętrznej, w zgodności jednostki ze sobą i otoczeniem. Od czasów Platona postulowały one utożsamienie się jednostki z funkcją pełnioną przez nią w społeczeństwie i państwie. Dla myśli filozoficzno-politycznej, określającej warunki harmonijnego współżycia ludzi w społeczeństwie było ważne wyodrębnienie przede wszystkim stałych składników istnienia tworzących tożsamość bytu człowieka oraz regularność i przewidywalność jego zachowań. 2. W innym (...) nurcie filozoficznej refleksji nad człowiekiem widzi się swoistość istnienia w egzystencjalnym ruchu samotworzenia się jednostki, w jej nieustającym stawaniu się człowiekiem w procesie stałego przezwyciężania nieodłącznych od egzystencji napięć. Myśl egzystencjalna (np. Pascal, egzystencjaliści, ale podobne intuicje można też spotkać u innych filozofów) traktuje istnienie człowieka jako strukturalne "transcendowanie" - przekraczanie przez wolny wybór jednostki przedmiotowo-tożsamościowego składnika egzystencji, jej harmonii i równowagi. Tożsamość jednostki (także jej roli społecznej) jawi się w tej optyce jako zjawisko ontologicznie względne, wtórne w stosunku do swobodnego określania przez jednostkę globalnego sensu swego życia. Z kolei, na płaszczyźnie ontycznej człowiek istnieje, wedle koncepcji egzystencjalnej, w dwóch równoległych niesprowadzalnych do siebie sposobach istnienia. Uwzględnienie tego faktu wymaga dualnego patrzenia na człowieka zarówno jako na tożsamość (określonej osobowości i roli społeczno-zawodowej) i jako na transcendencję - egzystencjalny proces samotworzenia się jednostki. Filozofia polityczna uważa za najważniejszy tożsamościowy aspekt istnienia, zaś filozof-moralista interesuje się przede wszystkim aspektem transcendencji, wolności jednostki do ustanawiania sensu swego istnienia. Każdy z tych punktów widzenia powinien akceptować dwoistość egzystencjalnej sytuacji człowieka i nie rościć pretensji do posiadania globalnej wiedzy o człowieku i jego obowiązkach. Zarówno polityk-ustawodawca mający na uwadze harmonię i stabilność społeczną (tożsamość ról społecznych, stałość zachowań jednostki, przewidywalność jej działań), jak i filozof-moralista ma swoje dobrze uzasadnione racje. Rozwojowi kultury służy utrzymanie na zasadzie komplementarności obu odmiennych poglądów na człowieka i zachowanie między nimi pewnych napięć, które nigdy całkowicie usunąć się nie dadzą. (shrink)

We present three examples of countable homogeneous structures whose automorphism groups are not universal, namely, fail to contain isomorphic copies of all automorphism groups of their substructures.Our first example is a particular case of a rather general construction on Fraïssé classes, which we call diversification, leading to automorphism groups containing copies of all finite groups. Our second example is a special case of another general construction on Fraïssé classes, the mixed sums, leading to a Fraïssé class with all finite symmetric (...) groups appearing as automorphism groups and at the same time with a torsion-free automorphism group of its Fraïssé limit. Our last example is a Fraïssé class of finite models with arbitrarily large finite abelian automorphism groups, such that the automorphism group of its Fraïssé limit is again torsion-free. (shrink)
