The Weighting of CSR Dimensions: One Size Does Not Fit All.Aurélien Petit & Gunther Capelle-Blancard - 2017 - Business and Society 56 (6):919-943.
Although the concept of corporate social responsibility is fundamentally multidimensional, most studies use composite scores to assess corporate social performance. How relevant are such composite scores? How the CSR dimensions are weighted? Should the weighting scheme be the same across sectors? This article proposes an original weighting scheme of CSR strengths and concerns, at the sector level, which is proportional to media and nongovernmental organizations scrutiny. The authors show that previous CSP assessments underweight environmental and corporate governance concerns. Moreover, findings (...)

  11. Program Size Complexity for Possibly Infinite Computations.Verónica Becher, Santiago Figueira, André Nies & Silvana Picchi - 2005 - Notre Dame Journal of Formal Logic 46 (1):51-64.
We define a program size complexity function $H^\infty$ as a variant of the prefix-free Kolmogorov complexity, based on Turing monotone machines performing possibly unending computations. We consider definitions of randomness and triviality for sequences in ${\{0,1\}}^\omega$ relative to the $H^\infty$ complexity. We prove that the classes of Martin-Löf random sequences and $H^\infty$-random sequences coincide and that the $H^\infty$-trivial sequences are exactly the recursive ones. We also study some properties of $H^\infty$ and compare it with other complexity functions. In particular, (...)

Academic Integrity in Higher Education: the Case of a Medium-Size College in the Galilee, Israel.Jonathan Kasler, Meirav Hen & Adi Sharabi-Nov - 2019 - Journal of Academic Ethics 17 (2):151-167.
An important measure of the success of an academic institution is evaluation of its moral health. In order to investigate academic integrity in our institution, we administered the Academic Integrity Survey to a representative sample of 384 students from different departments. In addition we performed content analysis on 24 disciplinary hearing files from the previous academic year in order to ascertain which students were brought before the committee and why. Results show that the majority of students perceived academic misconduct as (...)

    Cell size control - a mechanism for maintaining fitness and function.Teemu P. Miettinen, Matias J. Caldez, Philipp Kaldis & Mikael Björklund - 2017 - Bioessays 39 (9):1700058.
The maintenance of cell size homeostasis has been studied for years in different cellular systems. With the focus on ‘what regulates cell size’, the question ‘why cell size needs to be maintained’ has been largely overlooked. Recent evidence indicates that animal cells exhibit nonlinear cell size dependent growth rates and mitochondrial metabolism, which are maximal in intermediate sized cells within each cell population. Increases in intracellular distances and changes in the relative cell surface area impose biophysical (...)

Sexual Size Dimorphism, Canine Dimorphism, and Male-Male Competition in Primates.J. Michael Plavcan - 2012 - Human Nature 23 (1):45-67.
Sexual size dimorphism is generally associated with sexual selection via agonistic male competition in nonhuman primates. These primate models play an important role in understanding the origins and evolution of human behavior. Human size dimorphism is often hypothesized to be associated with high rates of male violence and polygyny. This raises the question of whether human dimorphism and patterns of male violence are inherited from a common ancestor with chimpanzees or are uniquely derived. Here I review patterns of, (...)

Are there different sizes of infinity? That is, are there infinite sets of different sizes? This is one of the most natural questions that one can ask about the infinite. But it is of course generally taken to be settled by mathematical results, such as Cantor’s theorem, to the effect that there are infinite sets without bijections between them. These results settle the question, given an almost universally accepted principle relating size to the existence of functions. The principle is: (...)

Coevolution of neocortical size, group size and language in humans.R. I. M. Dunbar - 1993 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 16 (4):681-694.
Group size is a function of relative neocortical volume in nonhuman primates. Extrapolation from this regression equation yields a predicted group size for modern humans very similar to that of certain hunter-gatherer and traditional horticulturalist societies. Groups of similar size are also found in other large-scale forms of contemporary and historical society. Among primates, the cohesion of groups is maintained by social grooming; the time devoted to social grooming is linearly related to group size among the (...)

In the presence of conflicting gaze cues, fearful expression and eye-size guide attention.Joshua M. Carlson & Jacob Aday - 2017 - Cognition and Emotion 32 (6):1178-1188.
ABSTRACTHumans are social beings that often interact in multi-individual environments. As such, we are frequently confronted with nonverbal social signals, including eye-gaze direction, from multiple individuals. Yet, the factors that allow for the prioritisation of certain gaze cues over others are poorly understood. Using a modified conflicting gaze paradigm, we tested the hypothesis that fearful gaze would be favoured amongst competing gaze cues. We further hypothesised that this effect is related to the increased sclera exposure, which is characteristic of fearful (...)

Background Informed consent is a requirement for all research. It is not, however, clear how much information is sufficient to make an informed decision about participation in research. Information on an online questionnaire about childhood development was provided through an unfolding electronic participant sheet in three levels of information. Methods 552 participants, who completed the web-based survey, accessed and spent time reading the participant information sheet (PIS) between July 2008 and November 2009. The information behaviour of the participants was investigated. (...)

The usual objections to infinite numbers, and classes, and series, and the notion that the infinite as such is self-contradictory, may... be dismissed as groundless. There remains, however, a very grave difficulty, connected with the contradiction [of the class of all classes not members of themselves]. This difficulty does not concern the infinite as such, but only certain very large infinite classes.
