“The revolution will not be supervised”: Consent and open secrets in data science.Abibat Rahman-Davies, Madison W. Green & Coleen Carrigan - 2021 - Big Data and Society 8 (2).
The social impacts of computer technology are often glorified in public discourse, but there is growing concern about its actual effects on society. In this article, we ask: how does “consent” as an analytical framework make visible the social dynamics and power relations in the capture, extraction, and labor of data science knowledge production? We hypothesize that a form of boundary violation in data science workplaces—gender harassment—may correlate with the ways humans’ lived experiences are extracted to produce Big Data. The (...)

The making and breaking of paternity secrets in donor insemination.L. Turney - 2010 - Journal of Medical Ethics 36 (7):401-406.
This paper analyses the complex issues faced by regulators of the infertility treatment industry in response to the social and technological changes that heralded a new openness in knowledge about genetics, paternity and the concomitant need for donor offspring to know their genetic origins. The imperative for full information about their donor and biological father, who contributed to their creation and half of their genome, was an outcome unanticipated by the architects of the donor insemination programme. Genetic paternity testing realised (...)

    Drosophila chorion genes: Cracking the eggshell's secrets.Terry L. Orr-Weaver - 1991 - Bioessays 13 (3):97-105.
The chorion genes of Drosophila are amplified in response to developmental signals in the follicle cells of the ovary prior to their transcription. Their expression is regulated both temporally and spatially within this tissue. They thus serve as models both for the regulation of DNA replication and of developmental transcription. The regulatory elements for DNA amplification have been delineated. Their analysis reveals that amplification is mediated by several regulatory regions and initiates at defined origins within the chorion cluster. Proteins involved (...)

The secret life of secrets: how they shape our relationships, our well-being, and who we are.Michael Slepian - 2022 - New York: Crown.
Think of a secret that you're keeping from others. It shouldn't take long; behavioral scientist Michael Slepian finds that on average, we are keeping as many as thirteen secrets at any given time. His research involving more than 50,000 participants from around the globe shows that the most common secrets include: lies we've told, addiction or mental health challenges, a hidden relationship, financial struggles, and more. Our secrets can weigh heavily upon us. Yet the burden of secrecy, (...)

Lean forward: Genetic analysis of temperature‐sensitive mutants unfolds the secrets of oligomeric protein complex assembly.Michael McMurray - 2014 - Bioessays 36 (9):836-846.
Multisubunit protein complexes are essential for cellular function. Genetic analysis of essential processes requires special tools, among which temperature‐sensitive (Ts) mutants have historically been crucial. Many researchers assume that the effect of temperature on such mutants is to drive their proteolytic destruction. In fact, degradation‐mediated elimination of mutant proteins likely explains only a fraction of the phenotypes associated with Ts mutants. Here I discuss insights gained from analysis of Ts mutants in oligomeric proteins, with particular focus on the study of (...)

Geneses, Genealogies, Genres, and Genius: The Secrets of the Archive.Jacques Derrida - 2006 - Columbia University Press.
Jacques Derrida argues that the feminist and intellectual Hélène Cixous is the most important writer working within the French idiom today. To prove this, he elucidates the epistemological and historical interconnectedness of four terms: genesis, genealogy, genre, and genius, and how they pertain to or are implicated in Cixous's work. Derrida explores Cixous's genius (a masculine term in French, he is quick to point out) and the inspiration that guides and informs her writing. He marvels at her skillful working within (...)

The secret and the neuter: On Heidegger and Blanchot.Pascal Massie - 2007 - Research in Phenomenology 37 (1):32-55.
Blanchot's thought has often been understood as a critique and a reversal of Heidegger's. Indeed, many formulas of the former are construed as mere inversions of the latter. Yet, the philosophical problem raised by the encounter between Blanchot and Heidegger cannot be suffciently accounted for in terms of 'inversion' or 'reversal'. Focusing on the question of the secret in its relation to Geheimnis , this essay starts with a discussion of the notion of secrecy in relation to mysticism and argues (...)

The universe speaks in numbers: how modern math reveals nature's deepest secrets.Graham Farmelo - 2019 - New York: Basic Books.
How math helps us solve the universe's deepest mysteries You must be able to test any physical theory in the real world. To most physicists, this is obvious. But since the 1980s, experimental physics has yielded vanishingly little insight into the fundamental physics of the universe. Meanwhile, some physicists have begun to probe the universe not with proton beams, but with pure math. They're less concerned with testable theories than with the drive to explain nature with mathematical beauty. This approach (...)

Colloque entre sept scavans qui sont de differens sentimens: des secrets cachez, des choses relevées.Jean Bodin - 1984 - Genève: Droz. Edited by F. Berriot.

The Journey of The Mind: Zen Meditation and Contemplative Prayer in the Korean Buddhist and Franciscan Traditions; with Special Reference to "Secrets on Cultivating the Mind" (修心訣 수심결, su shim gyol ) by Pojo Chinul (知訥, 1158–1210) and "The Journey of the Mind into God" ( itinerarium mentis in deum ) by Bonaventure of Bagnoregio (1217–1274). [REVIEW]S. abstract: This essay explores the parallels in the life and teaching of the Korean Zen master Pojo Chinul (1158–1210) and the Franciscan saint and theologian Bonaventure of Bagnoregio (ca. 1217–1274). Living during the same thirteenth century but on opposite sides of the world, both men committed their lives to reforming the religious life and to attaining the experience of awakening in their respective traditions. To this end, both encouraged the study of their foundational texts, together with the earnest practice of (...)
