En su escrito “Acerca de la pregunta: ¿Qué significa ilustrar?”, Moses Mendelssohn considera que, en casos donde la ilustración del ser humano comprometiese la estabilidad del Estado, la filosofía debería guardar silencio. Para justificarlo, apela a las palabras de un “escritor hebreo”, pero sin mencionarlo. El presente trabajo ofrecerá un detenido análisis de las referencias contenidas en dicha cita, facilitando la tarea de los lectores interesados. Partiendo de ella, se propondrá una interpretación alternativa del artículo, haciendo una lectura entre líneas (...) inspirada en la filosofía de Leo Strauss. Con especial énfasis en las condiciones de ciudadanía de Mendelssohn y los judíos, se considerará la comprensión filosófica y política que un filósofo judío ilustrado pudiera hacerse del texto. Despite the many differing perspectives possible regarding the concept of a property right, one central aspect is, arguably, the primal exclusionary impulse and its special connection to a particular form of subjectivity, especially in terms of how people feel about space, enclosed space and any subsequent property rules applicable. Such aspects limit speculative thought concerning the enactment of challenging housing reforms. This essay therefore asks: Why is exclusion so relevant to spatial ethics, and is it only a particular form of (...) subjectivity that is involved in the phenomena of exclusionary impulses? As a response, new speculative thoughts are proposed that aim at challenging such specialised subjectivity, exclusionary impulses and spatial engagement: re-sanctification of enclosed space, de-objectification of being and a call to develop new or alternative subjectivities and modes of somatic thought. In about 700, a century after his death, the Life of Columba was written by Adomnán, ninth abbot of Iona. It has long been valued as the major primary source on the subject, for the light it throws on (...) early medieval Scotland and Ireland, and as an important work of literature. The 1961 edition of the Life, by Alan and Marjorie Anderson, has long been unavailable. Marjorie Anderson has now revised both the Latin text and the English translation, provided new historical notes, and rewritten the Introduction to take account of recent work in the area. This new edition of a source indispensable for the study of the early medieval church meets a major scholarly need. (shrink)

Considers how Hegel could both accept the starting point of social contract theory and reject what contractarians take to be an obvious implication of that starting point. It also explores the alternative account of social and political legitimacy that Hegel draws from the principle of freedom. A major theme of the chapter is the importance that Hegel attaches to the ways in which the major institutions of the modern community work to develop and sustain individual free agency. Through an exploration of Hegel's theory of recognition, the chapter shows that Hegel's own alternative theory of political legitimacy involves determining what a community must be like if it is to be successful in fulfilling this function.
