Insurgent Universality offers a novel attempt to access history through a problematisation of the notion of universalism. Its main argument is based on three notions articulated in revolutionary events: temporalities, universality and insurgency. In this article we review their theoretical aspects, comment on their limitations, and outline potential reformulations.

In this paper, we challenge the vision of creating a giant knowledge graph of reusable research data from multiple projects and platforms, based on Semantic Web technologies and a shared conceptualisation in the form of a commonly used ontology ecosystem, promoted by the Semantic Data for Humanities and Social Sciences project (SDHSS). Three main issues are raised: the difficulty of proposing a cross-disciplinary ontology for humanities and social sciences given the different research agendas and constructivist approaches; the difficulty of interlinking (...) the objects present in the different information systems, due to different notions of identity; the challenge of dealing with uncertainty, inconsistencies and contradictions in information sources, when the aim is to produce ‘factual’ information. First, I propose an epistemological analysis of information, as distinct from data and knowledge, then I develop a conceptualisation of information in humanities and social sciences, based on the OntoClean methodology, and the foundational ontologies DOLCE and Descriptions and Situations, and show how it can ground a cross-disciplinary ontology ecosystem based on the CIDOC CRM and its SDHSS integration. Finally, I apply these principles to a detailed analysis of the information production process and show how the proposed conceptualisation provides possible solutions to the three challenges raised. La polémique contre les oracles développée par Œnomaos de Gadara n’a jamais été reconstituée. Nous nous proposons de la reconstruire et de montrer que cette polémique et celle contre le fatalisme développée par le même Œnomaos sont intriquées et se soutiennent réciproquement. Notre analyse se divise en deux parties : dans la première, nous reconstituons les principes exégétiques de la critique des oracles, tels qu’ils apparaissent dans les chapitres 19-36 du livre V de la Praeparatio evangelica d’Eusèbe ; dans la (...) seconde, nous reconstituons les arguments qu’élabore Œnomaos dans le long chapitre 7 du livre VI du même ouvrage pour reduire à néant la prétention des oracles à être, avant même que véridiques, significatifs, apophantiques, doués de sens. Cet article se propose de mettre en lumière la centralité du thème de la vie, et du rapport entre vie et pensée, dans la philosophie de Socrate. Ce thème est étroitement lié chez Socrate à la justification du sens de sa propre philosophie, qui repose non pas sur un certain « mode de vie », mais sur une série de principes théoriques forts et clairement définis. Or ces principes ne peuvent se réaliser que lorsqu’ils trouvent leur matière d’actualisation et leur (...) instrument de contrôle dans la réalité de la vie. Cela implique l’élaboration d’un nouveau concept de « vie », ainsi que du concept fondamental de « vivre en philosophant » : ce dernier indique une sorte de déplacement continu du plan de la pensée au plan de la vie, et vice versa, du particulier à l’universel, et vice versa, car seul, chacun des deux est insuffisant. El presente trabajo analiza algunas tensiones claves en el estudio de las imágenes de la educación inclusiva. Su dimensión estética encuentra una alta fertilidad analítica a través del sintagma ‘estética del disenso’. Esta etiqueta desempeña un papel central en el pensamiento de Rancière, cuyos significantes sobre lo estético se juegan en los dispositivos de reorganización de la experiencia sensible, explorando la naturaleza de los gestos, las miradas y los susurros de las palabras y de los registros imagéticos con los que (...) entramos en contacto al interactuar con un determinado fenómeno. Entre sus principales conclusiones, destaca la necesidad de asumir el estudio estético de la educación inclusiva es, desplegar un proceso de reconsideración y/o traducción del atributo ‘político’ en lo más profundo de nuestro aparato imaginativo y/o perceptivo. Se observa, además, educación inclusiva construye un código intelectual que tienden a desestabilizar su orden de dominación o aparato de ficcionalización que ha subyugado la comprensión auténtica de sus signos. Se trata que aprendamos a develar el régimen de pensamiento específico que ella construye, a objeto de poder ingresar en él, para desplegar otras formas de ver y modos de pensar sobre algo. (shrink)

O artigo aborda o ensino e a aprendizagem de filosofia a partir da noção de criação de conceitos, conforme o entendimento de Deleuze. Para isso, discute o que significa criar conceitos em filosofia, associando essa concepção a uma nova imagem do pensamento que entende a criação de conceitos como o dizer do acontecimento, o sentido incorporal produzido pelo efeito do encontro dos corpos. Depois estabelece os vínculos entre o sentido e o acontecimento com uma nova imagem sobre ensinar e aprender (...) filosofia e conclui com a figura do teatro para compreender esses vínculos. Questo lavoro si pone sulla via della questione dell’origine attraverso un confronto tra Hegel e Derrida. In particolare, abbiamo individuato nella Scienza della logica il punto centrale a partire dal quale le istanze teoretiche dei due filosofi esibiscono la loro vicinanza e la loro distanza; sollecitando a questo modo la trama del testo metafisico che con Hegel si compie, ci siamo posti con Derrida ai suoi margini frequentandone l'apertura ed il rilancio come consegna a un pensiero in agguato sulla soglia (...) dell'avvenire. Così avanzando, la questione dell’origine non si è innanzitutto configurata come un problema temporale: il tempo stesso e il suo ritardo sull’origine hanno lasciato il campo a una questione logico-semiotica. There is, on the one hand, need to restate clearly the precise sense of my interpretation of the condemnation of Galilee and of its magisterial value, by showing that the main thesis which has been attributed to me - that of an infallible character of the declaration of heresy contained in the abjuration of Galileo - is not found in (...) my writings. On the other hand, it must be shown that the objections put forward against my real theses have no historical foundation, due to an insufficient knowledge of the style of the Roman Holy Office on the part of the authors of the article mentioned. One of the most challenging tasks when adopting Bayesian networks is the one of learning their structure from data. This task is complicated by the huge search space of possible solutions and by the fact that the problem isNP-hard. Hence, a full enumeration of all the possible solutions is not always feasible and approximations are often required. However, to the best of our knowledge, a quantitative analysis of the performance and characteristics of the different heuristics to solve this problem has (...) never been done before. For this reason, in this work, we provide a detailed comparison of many different state-of-the-art methods for structural learning on simulated data considering both BNs with discrete and continuous variables and with different rates of noise in the data. In particular, we investigate the performance of different widespread scores and algorithmic approaches proposed for the inference and the statistical pitfalls within them. (shrink)

Through this book Gargani demonstrates how Wittgensteins thinking can be used a truly efficient toolbox. On the basis of a significant number of unpublished documents, here published for the first time, the article reconstructs the historical and scientific origins of Lavoisier's Mémoires de physique et de chimie. Because of the paucity of primary sources available so far, this work has previously received little attention and its 'publication' is commonly attributed to Madame Lavoisier's effort to revive the memory of her husband. In contrast with this image, this article suggests that Madame Lavoisier had only a subsidiary (...) role and that Armand Séguin's contribution to both the editing and the scientific organization of the Mémoires needs a historical reassessment. Lavoisier's collaboration with Séguin, dating from 1792, resulted in a work the aim of which was far more ambitious than that of collecting already published memoirs. Furthermore, it is argued that the contents of the first volume of the Mémoires indicate an important evolution in Lavoisier's chemical theory. (shrink)

This paper has two parts: Part I is a continuation of the work [10] and as well as this it deals mainly with the logic of an auxiliary (semantical) theory, ST , in effect generally considered (by textbooks) within the semantics for a typical theory T of general relativity; and especially the modal features of this auxiliary theory are studied. Part II deals with the influence had by relativistic theories and especially by the new notion of space-time on pragmatic languages (...) Certain results, most famously in classical statistical mechanics and complex systems, but also in quantum mechanics and high-energy physics, yield a coarse-grained stable statistical pattern in the long run. The explanation of these results shares a common structure: the results hold for a 'typical' dynamics, that is, for most of the underlying dynamics. In this paper I argue that the structure of the explanation of these results might shed some light --a different light-- on philosophical debates on the laws of (...) nature. In the explanation of such patterns, the specific form of the underlying dynamics is almost irrelevant. The conditions required, given a free state-space evolution, suffice to account for the coarse-grained lawful behaviour. An analysis of such conditions might thus provide a different account of how regular behaviour can occur. This paper focuses on drawing attention to this type of explanation, outlining it in the diverse areas of physics in which it appears, and discussing its limitations and significance in the tractable setting of classical statistical mechanics. In this paper we examine the contributions of the Italian geometrical school to the Foundations of Projective Geometry. Starting from De Paolis' work we discuss some papers by Segre, Peano, Veronese, Fano and Pieri. In particular we try to show how a totally abstract and general point of view was clearly adopted by the Italian scholars many years before the publication of Hilbert's Grundlagen.We are particularly interested in the interrelations between the Italian and the German schools (mainly the influence of (...) This essay focuses on an unknown Latin translation of Georg Ernst Stahl's treatise on the nature of sulfur (Zufällige Gedancken und Nützliche Bedencken über den Streit von dem so genannten Sulfure). The original edition, published in 1718, laid the foundation for the phlogiston theory, which dominated European chemistry until the early 1770s. However, the dissemination of the treatise on sulfur outside the German states remained limited. Its Latin translation proposes a different scenario as it was owned by three prominent French (...) chemists: Étienne-François Geoffroy, Jean Hellot and Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier. Geoffroy's early interest in Stahl's chemistry has been evidenced and it is suggested that the acquisition of the manuscript might be linked to his connection with Stahl through Caspar Neumann, a chemist from Berlin. When he entered in the possession of the manuscript Jean Hellot wrote a long excerpt of Stahl’s work. Lavoisier acquired the manuscript in 1766, and his critical reading of Stahl's work significantly influenced his own effort to outline a new theory of combustion. This manuscript represents a significant historical connection between Stahl’s phlogiston theory and Lavoisier's revolutionary ideas. (shrink)
