A reflection on the challenge of protecting confidentiality of participants while disseminating research results locally.Anne-Marie Turcotte-Tremblay & Esther Mc Sween-Cadieux - 2018 - BMC Medical Ethics 19 (S1):45.
Researchers studying health systems in low-income countries face a myriad of ethical challenges throughout the entire research process. In this article, we discuss one of the greatest ethical challenges that we encountered during our fieldwork in West Africa: the difficulty of protecting the confidentiality of participants while locally disseminating results of health systems research to stakeholders. This reflection is based on experiences of authors involved in conducting evaluative research of interventions aimed at improving health systems in West Africa. Our observation (...)

The DING family of proteins: ubiquitous in eukaryotes, but where are the genes?Anne Berna, Ken Scott, Eric Chabrière & François Bernier - 2009 - Bioessays 31 (5):570-580.
PstS and DING proteins are members of a superfamily of secreted, high‐affinity phosphate‐binding proteins. Whereas microbial PstS have a well‐defined role in phosphate ABC transporters, the physiological function of DING proteins, named after their DINGGG N termini, still needs to be determined. PstS and DING proteins co‐exist in some Pseudomonas strains, to which they confer a highly adhesive and virulent phenotype. More than 30 DING proteins have now been purified, mostly from eukaryotes. They are often associated with infections or with (...)

A still, small voice: Letter‐writing, testimony and the project of address in Etty Hillesum's letters from Westerbork.Anne Whitehead - 2001 - Cultural Values 5 (1):79-96.
This paper derives from an exploration of the ways in which the letters of Holocaust writer Etty Hillesum, which are seemingly resistant to many of the interests of current trauma theory, can be read in relation to contemporary writing on testimonial. In particular, the three theorists I shall discuss here, Derrida, Caruth and Irigaray, directly address Freud's Beyond the Pleasure Principle, a central text in the current refiguring of trauma. This paper traces the ways in which Hillesum's letters can be (...)

The meaning of dignity for older adults: A meta-synthesis.Anne Clancy, Nina Simonsen, Johanne Lind, Anne Liveng & Aud Johannessen - 2021 - Nursing Ethics 28 (6):878-894.
Dignified care is a central issue in the nursing care of older adults. Nurses are expected to treat older adults with dignity, and older adults wish to be treated in a dignified manner. Researchers have recommended investigating the concept of dignity based on specific contexts and population groups. This meta-synthesis study aims to explore the understandings of dignity from the perspective of older adults in the Nordic countries. Synthesising findings from qualitative studies on older adults’ experiences of dignity has provided (...)

The second wave: Toward responsible inclusion of pregnant women in research.Anne Drapkin Lyerly, Margaret Olivia Little & Ruth Faden - 2008 - International Journal of Feminist Approaches to Bioethics 1 (2):5-22.
Though much progress has been made on inclusion of non-pregnant women in research, thoughtful discussion about including pregnant women has lagged behind. We outline resulting knowledge gaps and their costs and then highlight four reasons why ethically we are obliged to confront the challenges of including pregnant women in clinical research. These are: the need for effective treatment for women during pregnancy, fetal safety, harm from the reticence to prescribe potentially beneficial medication, and the broader issues of justice and access (...)

Background: In accordance with ethical guidelines for nurses, leaders for nurse services in general are responsible for facilitating professional development and ethical reflection and to use ethical guidelines as a management tool. Research describes a gap between employees’ and nurse leaders’ perceptions of priorities. Objective: The purpose of this article is to gain deeper insight into how nurses as leaders in somatic hospitals describe ethical challenges. Design and method: We conducted individual, quality interview with 10 nurse leaders, nine females and (...)

  31. God and Morality.Anne Jeffrey - 2019 - Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.
This Element has two aims. The first is to discuss arguments philosophers have made about the difference God's existence might make to questions of general interest in metaethics. The second is to argue that it is a mistake to think we can get very far in answering these questions by assuming a thin conception of God, and to suggest that exploring the implications of thick theisms for metaethics would be more fruitful.

Long-term partial reinforcement extinction effect and long-term partial punishment effect in a one-trial-a-day paradigm.Anne Shemer & Joram Feldon - 1984 - Bulletin of the Psychonomic Society 22 (3):221-224.
Two experiments were run to demonstrate the presence of a partial reinforcement extinction effect (PREE) and a partial punishment effect (PPE) 4 weeks after training in a 1-trial/day procedure. In the PREE paradigm, two groups of animals were trained to run a straight alley for food reward; one group was rewarded on every trial (CRF), whereas the other was rewarded on only 50% of the trials (PRF). In the test phase, extinction, no reward was present on any trial. Four weeks (...)

Background: Empathy and moral courage are important virtues in nursing and nursing ethics. Hence, it is of great importance that nursing students and nurses develop their ability to empathize and their willingness to demonstrate moral courage. Research aim: The aim of this article is to explore third-year undergraduate nursing students’ perceptions and experiences in developing empathy and moral courage. Research design: This study employed a longitudinal qualitative design based on individual interviews. Participants and research context: Seven undergraduate nursing students were (...)

From painful busyness to emotional immunization: Nurses’ experiences of ethical challenges.Anne Storaker, Dagfinn Nåden & Berit Sæteren - 2017 - Nursing Ethics 24 (5):556-568.
Background: The professional values presented in ethical guidelines of the Norwegian Nurses Organisation and International Council of Nurses describe nurses’ professional ethics and the obligations that pertain to good nursing practice. The foundation of all nursing shall be respect for life and the inherent dignity of the individual. Research proposes that nurses lack insight in ethical competence and that ethical issues are rarely discussed on the wards. Furthermore, research has for some time confirmed that nurses experience moral distress in their (...)

Developing Ethical Confidence: The Impact of Action-Oriented Ethics Instruction in an Accounting Curriculum.Anne Christensen, Jane Cote & Claire Kamm Latham - 2018 - Journal of Business Ethics 153 (4):1157-1175.
While there is considerable support for integrating ethics education in accounting curricula, research presents conflicting evidence on how best to incorporate it. A review of accounting ethics scholarship highlights criticisms of the literature, including limited research into actual behavior and a lack of theory. We report the results of a study that is theory based, captures behaviors rather than attitudes, and explores the effect of repeated practice to develop voice efficacy. We examine the impact of two types of ethics instructions. (...)

Does Kantian Virtue Amount to More than Continence?Anne Margaret Baxley - 2003 - Review of Metaphysics 56 (3):559 - 586.
This account of the good will has struck many readers as counterintuitive. Whereas Kant seems to think that the person in whom a sense of duty must overcome indifference or contrary inclination can and does display a good will, our intuitions about human goodness suggest that there is something deficient or lacking in the grudging agent. Aristotle, for example, would think that the grudging moralist displays continence, rather than virtue, because he thinks it is the mark of the virtuous person (...)

    Plato's Socrates as Narrator: A Philosophical Muse.Anne-Marie Schultz - 2013 - Lanham: Lexington Books.
This book explores five Platonic dialogues: Lysis, Charmides, Protagoras, Euthydemus, and the Republic. This book uses Socrates’ narrative commentary as its primary interpretive framework. No one has engaged in a sustained attempt to explore the Platonic dialogues from this angle. As a result, it offers a unique contribution to Plato scholarship. The portrait of Socrates that emerges challenges the traditional view of Socrates as an intellectualist and offers a holistic vision of philosophical practice.

The digital shift leads to increasing changes. Employees can deal with changes through informal learning that enables needs-based development. For successful informal learning, self-regulated learning is crucial, i.e., to set goals, plan, apply strategies, monitor, and regulate learning for example by applying resource strategies. However, existing SRL models all refer to formal learning settings. Because informal learning differs from formal learning, this study investigates whether SRL models can be transferred from formal learning environments into informal work settings. More precisely, are (...)
