To push or not to push? Affective influences on moral judgment depend on decision frame.Bernhard Pastötter, Sabine Gleixner, Theresa Neuhauser & Karl-Heinz T. Bäuml - 2013 - Cognition 126 (3):373-377.
  4. Bodily experience between selfhood and otherness.Bernhard Waldenfels - 2004 - Phenomenology and the Cognitive Sciences 3 (3):235-248.
In opposition to traditional forms of dualism and monism, the author holds that our bodily self includes certain aspects of otherness. This is shown concerning the phenomenological issues of intentionality, of self-awareness and of intersubjectivity, by emphasizing the dimension of pathos. We are affected by what happens to us before being able to respond to it by acts or actions. Every sense, myself and others are born out of pathos. The original alienness of our own body, including neurological processes, creates (...)

How to Frame a Mathematician.Bernhard Schröder, Martin Schmitt, Deniz Sarikaya & Bernhard Fisseni - 2019 - In Stefania Centrone, Deborah Kant & Deniz Sarikaya (eds.), Reflections on the Foundations of Mathematics: Univalent Foundations, Set Theory and General Thoughts. Springer Verlag. pp. 417-436.
Frames are a concept in knowledge representation that explains how the receiver, using background information, completes the information conveyed by the sender. This concept is used in different disciplines, most notably in cognitive linguistics and artificial intelligence. This paper argues that frames can serve as the basis for describing mathematical proofs. The usefulness of the concept is illustrated by giving a partial formalisation of proof frames, specifically focusing on induction proofs, and relevant parts of the mathematical theory within which the (...)

Semantic types of legal norms in German laws: classification and analysis using local linear explanations.Bernhard Waltl, Georg Bonczek, Elena Scepankova & Florian Matthes - 2019 - Artificial Intelligence and Law 27 (1):43-71.
This paper describes the automated classification of legal norms in German statutes with regard to their semantic type. We propose a semantic type taxonomy for norms in the German civil law domain consisting of nine different types focusing on functional aspects, such as Duties, Prohibitions, Permissions, etc. We performed four iterations in classifying legal norms with a rule-based approach using a manually labeled dataset, i.e., tenancy law, of the German Civil Code ). During this experiment the \ score continuously improved (...)

Translation and the paradox of analysis: a reflection on Wiredu's notion of tongue dependency.Bernhard Weiss - forthcoming - Inquiry: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Philosophy.
Wiredu argues intriguingly that some philosophical questions only arise in certain linguistic settings. So philosophical questions are, on occasion, linguistically relative or, more vividly, Tongue Dependent. The phenomenon however does not rest on expressive differences between languages, or, better, on failures of translation. Though rejecting his example, I endorse the general possibility he constructs. I do so provided that there is a solution to the Paradox of Analysis. Indeed I point out that the possibility of Tongue Dependency is both necessary (...)

No Self-Reference, No Ownership?Bernhard Ritter - forthcoming - European Journal of Philosophy.
A 'no-ownership' or 'no-self theory' holds that there is no proper subject of experience; the ownership of experience can only be accounted for by invoking a sub-personal entity. In the recent self-versus-no-self debate, it is widely assumed that the no- referent view of 'I', which is closely associated with Wittgenstein and G. E. M. Anscombe, implies a no-ownership theory of experience. I spell out this assumption with regard to both non-reflective and reflective consciousness and show that it is false. If (...)

Responsive Ethik zwischen Antwort und Verantwortung.Bernhard Waldenfels - 2010 - Deutsche Zeitschrift für Philosophie 58 (1):71-81.
Responsive ethics stands out against every sort of communicative ethics merely orientated towards common aims, general norms, and utility calculation. It is based on a clear contrast between being responsible for what one has done and responding to the Other′s appeal and claim. The logic of response includes aspects like temporal delay, inevitability, gifts and freedom arising from elsewhere. Both – being responsible for and responding to – meet through the Third Party which intervenes in terms of habits and rules, (...)

    Doing truth.Bernhard Kleeberg - 2014 - Zeitschrift für Kulturphilosophie 2014 (2):7-22.
The article delineates the program of a praxeology of truth that allows for studying the dynamics and variability of truth in the sense of situated doing truth. It proposes a heuristic differentiation between »truth scenes« and »truth figures« that helps to analyze the emergence of theories of truth as well as that of specific truth cultures.

Is there a Relation Between Ecological Practices and Spirituality? The Case of Benedictine Monasteries.Bernhard Freyer, Valentina Aversano-Dearborn, Georg Winkler, Sina Leipold, Harald Haidl, Karl Werner Brand, Michael Rosenberger & Thomas Wallnig - 2018 - Journal of Agricultural and Environmental Ethics 31 (5):559-582.
For decades there has been a controversial debate over how far religious faith communities are specifically engaged in ecological practices (EP). Therefore we studied four Austrian and two German Benedictine monasteries religious ethics and spirituality as a means of a driving force for initiating EP. We draw upon theories of organizational learning processes and capacity-building of sustainability to interpret our empirical findings. The majority of monasteries are highly engaged in EP, initiated either as an outcome of individual activities or through (...)

  20. Processes in the interpretation of generics and CP-Laws.Bernhard Nickel - manuscript
Ceteris Paribus (cp-)laws may be said to hold only ``other things equal,'' signaling that their truth is compatible with a range of exceptions. Several theorists have taken this feature to introduce the presumption that cp-laws are trivial, one that needs to be countered if we are to appeal to cp-laws in the course of scientific investigation or our philosophical theorizing about it. I argue that the triviality worry is misplaced by pointing out that cp-laws are just a subset of uncontroversially (...)

The Minimax, the Minimin, and the Hurwicz Adjustment Principle.Bernhard F. Arnold, Ingrid Größl & Peter Stahlecker - 2002 - Theory and Decision 52 (3):233-260.
In this paper the Hurwicz decision rule is applied to an adjustment problem concerning the decision whether a given action should be improved in the light of some knowledge on the states of nature or on other actors' behaviour. In comparison with the minimax and the minimin adjustment principles the general Hurwicz rule reduces to these specific classes whenever the underlying loss function is quadratic and knowledge is given by an ellipsoidal set. In the framework of the adjustment model discussed (...)

Religionsunterricht als Werteerziehung?: Eine Problemanzeige.Bernhard Dressler - 2002 - Zeitschrift Für Evangelische Ethik 46 (1):256-269.
Instructing values is being increasingly regarded as an educational goal of religious teaching. However, the concept of value, which forms the basis of this opinion, is problematic from a sociological, philosophical and a theological point of view, and is last, but not least from an educational perspective, equally problematic. It is only partially possible to target attitudes and opinions towards values and define them as educationally intended. Attitudes and opinions towards values are more likely side-etlects of the educational process. Religious (...)

Toward the end of the 18th century, the Scottish geologist James Hall carried out a series of experiments. They were designed to explore the genesis of rock formations in connection with the controversy between “neptunism” and “volcanism”. These experiments are documented in a museum collection that is located today in the British Geological Survey headquarters in Keyworth near Nottingham. The collection consists of ca. 250–300 individual items and includes samples of Hall's experiments and experimental equipment, as well as several of (...)

    Reconstructing the Social Space of Culture.Bernhard Giesen - 2004 - Thesis Eleven 79 (1):31-36.
This paper retraces the conceptual development of Jeffrey Alexander’s cultural sociology. It centres on three major conceptual achievements: first, the distinction between inside and outside and its more peculiar variants (like system and environment or friend and foe); second, the elaboration of the temporal axis as a distinct dimension of cultural analysis; and finally, the close focus on performativity that took centre-stage in cultural analysis during the last years.

The function of baroque opera libretti is illustrated by comparing different versions of two operatic plots. The close links between musical and spoken drama in the baroque period, as well as the (...)
