“Do Something Simple for the Climate”: How Collective Counter-Conduct Reproduces Consumer Responsibilization.Friederike Döbbe & Emilia Cederberg - 2024 - Journal of Business Ethics 192 (1):21-37.
This paper studies consumers’ reactions and resistance to being responsibilized for making climate-friendly food choices. While resistance to consumer responsibilization has been studied from an individual experiential perspective, we examine its collective characteristics. We do this by tracing the controversial marketing campaign of a Swedish poultry producer, encouraging consumers to “do something simple for the climate” by eating chicken rather than beef. In our analysis of social media comments and formal complaints to the consumer protection authority, we mobilize Foucault’s notion (...)

Remembering the Singing of Silenced Voices: Brundibár and Problems of Pedagogy.Teryl L. Dobbs - 2013 - Philosophy of Music Education Review 21 (2):156.
In this essay I explore problems of pedagogy related to Hans Krása’s Brundibár by drawing heavily upon the thinking of two divergent theoretical perspectives regarding Holocaust testimony as advanced by Giorgio Agamben (2002) and Shoshana Felman (1992). I theorize that lodged within a space of difficult knowledge coalesced through violence, trauma, complicity, memory, and music lies a rupture at the heart of the Brundibár experience. This space is created yet not altogether embraced by contemporary musical experiences of Brundibár in the (...)

Maimonides and St. Thomas on the Limits of Reason.Idit Dobbs-Weinstein - 1995 - Suny Press.
This book shows that Maimonides and St. Thomas reached strikingly similar conclusions regarding the limits of reason and that these limits, in turn, show the dimensions of philosophical understanding.

Spinoza's Critique of Religion and its Heirs: Marx, Benjamin, Adorno.Idit Dobbs-Weinstein - 2015 - New York, NY: Cambridge University Press.
Spinoza's heritage has been occluded by his incorporation into the single, western, philosophical canon formed and enforced by theologico-political condemnation, and his heritage is further occluded by controversies whose secular garb shields their religious origins. By situating Spinoza's thought in a materialist Aristotelian tradition, this book sheds new light on those who inherit Spinoza's thought and its consequences materially and historically rather than metaphysically. By focusing on Marx, Benjamin, and Adorno, Idit Dobbs-Weinstein explores the manner in which Spinoza's radical (...)

The Virtue Ethics of Levi Gersonides by Alexander Green.Idit Dobbs-Weinstein - 2018 - Journal of the History of Philosophy 56 (2):368-369.
The works of Gersonides encompass science, philosophy, and biblical exegesis. The majority of the philosophical writings are constituted by supercommentaries on Averroes’s commentaries on Aristotle’s works, whereas his magnum opus, The Wars of the Lord, encompasses all three genres. Since these works engage his preeminent predecessors, Maimonides and Averroes, and since Gersonides explains the motivation to composing the Wars as a concern for human flourishing, the absence of a supercommentary on the Nicomachean Ethics is striking. The Virtue Ethics of Levi Gersonides (...)

Theories of Value and Distribution Since Adam Smith: Ideology and Economic Theory.Maurice Dobb (ed.) - 1975 - Cambridge University Press.
Mr Dobb examines the history of economic thought in the light of the modern controversy over capital theory and, more particularly, the appearance of Sraffa's book The Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities, which was a watershed in the critical discussions constituted a crucial turning-point in the history of economics: an estimate not unconnected with his reinterpretation of nineteenth-century economic thought as consisting of two streams or traditions commonly confused under the generic title of 'the classical tradition' against which (...)
  24. Whose History? Spinoza’s Critique of Religion As an Other Modernity.Idit Dobbs-Weinstein - 2003 - Idealistic Studies 33 (2-3):219-235.
This paper discusses Spinoza's critique of religion as a visible moment of a radically occluded materialist Judeo-Arabic Aristotelian philosophical tradition. While the prevailing (Christo-Platonic) tradition begins with the familiar gesture to metaphysics as first philosophy, Spinoza's thought (and thus, this Other Tradition) takes politics as its point of departure with its concrete emphasis on a critique of dogma. This paper will show-by way of differing readings of Spinoza-how this materialist tradition becomes occluded by the prevailing tradition, even in the work (...)

Jumping into the artistic deep end: building the catalogue raisonné.Todd Dobbs, Aileen Benedict & Zbigniew Ras - 2022 - AI and Society 37 (3):873-889.
The catalogue raisonné compiled by art scholars holds information about an artist’s work such as a painting’s image, medium, provenance, and title. The catalogue raisonné as a tangible asset suffers from the challenges of art authentication and impermanence. As the catalogue raisonné is born digital, the impermanence challenge abates, but the authentication challenge persists. With the popularity of artificial intelligence and its deep learning architectures of computer vision, we propose to address the authentication challenge by creating a new artefact for (...)

Toward Sociotechnical AI: Mapping Vulnerabilities for Machine Learning in Context.Roel Dobbe & Anouk Wolters - 2024 - Minds and Machines 34 (2):1-51.
This paper provides an empirical and conceptual account on seeing machine learning models as part of a sociotechnical system to identify relevant vulnerabilities emerging in the context of use. As ML is increasingly adopted in socially sensitive and safety-critical domains, many ML applications end up not delivering on their promises, and contributing to new forms of algorithmic harm. There is still a lack of empirical insights as well as conceptual tools and frameworks to properly understand and design for the impact (...)

A Praxis Oriented by the Debt to the Past.Idit Dobbs-Weinstein - 2012 - Epoché: A Journal for the History of Philosophy 16 (2):443-461.
This paper explores Benjamin’s and Adorno’s materialist critique of the philosophy of history as a metaphysical fiction which harbors and shields the barbarism at the heart of culture. Each undertakes a radical critique of ontological, future-oriented notions of temporality and history, proposing instead a political understanding oriented to the past for the sake of the present or, more precisely, for the sake of actively resisting the persistent barbarism. The more culture insists on its progress beyond barbarism, the more it claims (...)

In this short essay, I report results from a representative national dataset from the Cooperative Institutional Research Program that shows that significantly more men than women intend to major in philosophy at the high-school and pre-university level. This lends credence to pre-university effects hypotheses of women's underrepresentation in philosophy and successfully replicates a smaller analysis performed by Cheshire Calhoun at Colby College in 2009. I also defend my analysis against an objection that claims that intention to major is not a (...)

    Maimonidean Aspects in Spinoza’s Thought.Idit Dobbs-Weinstein - 1994 - Graduate Faculty Philosophy Journal 17 (1-2):153-174.
A cursory review of studies of Spinoza’s thought discloses that diverse and often opposed religious, philosophical, historical, even literary traditions have claimed and disclaimed his debt to them as well as theirs to him. A Jewish, Christian, pantheist, and atheist Spinoza vies with a rationalist and a mystic, a realist and a nominalist, an analytic and a continental, an historicist and an a-historical one. And this list is far from exhaustive of the dazzling array of further, nuanced debates and interpretations (...)

  47. The Concept of Providence in the Thought of Moses Maimonides and St. Thomas Aquinas.Idit Dobbs-Weinstein - 1987 - Dissertation, University of Toronto (Canada)
The thesis investigates the philosophical dimension of providence as the manifestation of human perfection in the thought of Moses Maimonides and St. Thomas Aquinas. In contrast to most studies of providence, which question the possibility of affirming human freedom in the light of divine knowledge, the thesis examines the function of providence in human existence. I argue that principally the concept becomes intelligible only if God is understood as providens rather than praevidens, since, for both Maimonides and Aquinas, understanding the (...)

The Delight of Beauty and Song of Songs 4:1–7.F. W. Dobbs-Allsopp - 2005 - Interpretation: A Journal of Bible and Theology 59 (3):260-277.
Beauty has not figured prominently in contemporary notions of human flourishing. This essay seeks to reclaim a notion of beauty that the Church and the academy can find valuable again. The question is engaged here specifically from the perspective of a biblical scholar using a biblical text-the poem in Song 4:1–7 — to focus and source the discussion.
