How Aristotle gets by in Metaphysics Zeta.Frank A. Lewis - 2013 - Oxford: Oxford University Press.
Frank A. Lewis presents a close study of book Zeta of Aristotle's Metaphysics, one of his most dense and controversial texts, commonly understood to contain his deepest thoughts on the definition of substance and related metaphysical issues. Lewis argues that Aristotle returns to the causal view of primary substance from his Posterior Analytics.

Subjectivity, realism, and postmodernism: the recovery of the world.Frank B. Farrell - 1994 - New York: Cambridge University Press.
This unusually accessible account of recent Anglo-American philosophy focuses on how that philosophy has challenged deeply held notions of subjectivity, mind, and language. The book is designed on a broad canvas in which recent arguments are placed in a historical context (in particular they are related to medieval philosophy and German idealism). The author then explores such topics as mental content, moral realism, realism and antirealism, and the character of subjectivity. Much of the book is devoted to an investigation of (...)

Moral Philosophers as Ethical Engineers: Limits of Moral Philosophy and a Pragmatist Alternative.Frank Martela - 2017 - Metaphilosophy 48 (1-2):58-78.
Ever since Kant, moral philosophers have been more or less animated by the mission of discovering inescapable law-like rules that would provide a binding justification for morality. Recently, however, many have started to question whether this is possible and what, after all, this project could achieve. An alternative vision of the task of moral philosophy starts from the pragmatist idea that philosophizing begins and ends in human experiencing. It leads to a view where morality is seen as a “social technology” (...)

    Historicism: an attempt at synthesis.Frank R. Ankersmit - 1995 - History and Theory 34 (3):143-161.
According to German theorists historicism was the result of a dynamization of the static world-view of the Enlightenment. According to contemporary Anglo-Saxon theorists historicism resulted from a de-rhetoricization of Enlightenment historical writing. It is argued that, contrary to appearances, these two views do not exclude but support each other. This can be explained if the account of change implicit in Enlightenment historical writing is compared to that suggested by historicism and, more specifically, by the historicist notion of the "historical idea." (...)

    The dialectics of Jameson's dialectics.Frank Ankersmit - 2012 - History and Theory 51 (1):84-106.
ABSTRACTThis review essay attempts to understand the book under review against the background of Jameson's previous writings. Failing to do so would invite misunderstanding since there are few contemporary theorists whose writing forms so much of a unity. Jameson's book can be divided into three parts. The first and most important part deals with dialectics, the second with politics, and the third with philosophy of history. In the first part Jameson argues that dialectics best captures our relationship to the sociocultural (...)

Representation and Reference.Frank Ankersmit - 2010 - Journal of the Philosophy of History 4 (3-4):375-409.
This essay focuses on the historical text as a whole. It does so by conceiving of the historical text as representation - in the way the we may say of a photo or a painting that it represents the person depicted on it. It is argued that representation cannot be properly understood by modelling it on true description. So all the central questions asked since the days of Frege with regard to how the true statement relates to the world must (...)

Seduction, Community, Speech: A Festschrift for Herman Parret.Frank Brisard, Herman Parret, Michael Meeuwis & Bart Vandenabeele - 2004 - John Benjamins.
This volume unites various contributions reflecting the intellectual interests exhibited by Professor Herman Parret (Institute of Philosophy, Leuven), who has continued to observe, and often critically assess, ongoing developments in pragmatics throughout his career. In fact, Parret's contributions to philosophical and empirical/linguistic pragmatics present substantive proposals in the epistemics of communication, while simultaneously offering meta-comments on the ideological premises of extant pragmatic analyses. In a lengthy introduction, an overview is provided of his achievements in promoting an integrated, "maximalist" pragmatics, as (...)

Adel Und Volk in Nietzsches Lateinischer Schrift „de Theognide Megarensi“.Frank Schweizer - 2007 - Nietzsche Studien 36 (1):367-379.

  35. The calibration question.Frank Lad - 1984 - British Journal for the Philosophy of Science 35 (3):213-221.
Recent discussion of the calibration of probability assessments is related to the earlier influential attitudes of Fréchet. The limiting frequency criterion of good calibration is criticised as being of no relevance to the evaluation of the probability of any event. An operational definition of good calibration is proposed which treats calibration properties as characteristics of the assessor's entire body of opinion, not of opinion about some particular event or events. In these terms a result is shown which says that every (...)

Congenital Transcendentalism and 'the loneliness which is the truth about things'.Frank Cioffi - 1992 - Royal Institute of Philosophy Supplement 33:125-138.
I take the phrase ‘congenital transcendentalism’ from Santayana who defined it as ‘the spontaneous feeling that life is a dream’. ‘The loneliness which is the truth about things’ is a phrase of Virginia Woolf's. The thesis I will advance is that many expressions of doubt or denial of the shareable world are self-misunderstood manifestations of the state indicated by Woolf's expression. But the loneliness of which Woolf speaks must not be construed as the kind of loneliness which can be assuaged (...)
