(Re)defining Masculinity and Femininity in Villeneuve's Dune.Edwardo Pérez - 2022-10-17 - In Kevin S. Decker (ed.), Dune and Philosophy. Wiley. pp. 46–54.
This is an interesting reinterpretation of masculine and feminine that speaks to contemporary perspectives on to what extent gender is a spectrum, especially when we consider the fates of all the so‐called "masculine" men in Dune. On one level, in Denis Villeneuve's Dune women become empowered, while the men become emasculated. Examining gender in Dune would be incomplete without a look at Baron Harkonnen, who, in both Frank Herbert's book and in David Lynch's 1984 film, is clearly depicted (...)

    Meanings and authorships in Dune.Tony Todd - 2009 - Film-Philosophy 13 (1):68-90.
Dune, released in 1984 and directed by David Lynch, from his own adaptedscreenplay of Frank Herbert’s epic science-fiction novel, provides a rich examplefor a reception study on ideas of authorship. On the one hand, Herbert’s 1960scult bestseller has evolved into a franchise and is thus regarded by Duneenthusiasts as a sacrosanct text. From a Lynch perspective, though, the film isusually seen as his least personal work – an event movie no less – and as such itholds the (...)

    The Emperor's Nightingale: Some Aspects of Mimesis.Frank Anderson Trapp - 1977 - Critical Inquiry 4 (1):85-103.
One of Hans Christian Andersen's most beautiful tales is "The Emperor's Nightingale." Its message—an exceptionally sobering one in the present context—is that nature is altogether finer and more enduring than art. It tells how a Chinese emperor, beguiled by a precious imitation bird that had been given him, forsook a natural songster he had once favored. But when that glittering counterfeit broke down, its clockwork sound silenced, the now aged ruler found welcome solace in the real bird's return, in its (...)

The Schoolhouse Door: Segregation's Last Stand at the University of Alabama.E. Culpepper Clark - 1993 - Oxford University Press USA.
On June 11, 1963, in a dramatic gesture that caught the nation's attention, Governor George Wallace physically blocked the entrance to Foster Auditorium on the University of Alabama's campus. His intent was to defy Attorney General Nicholas Katzenbach, sent on behalf of the Kennedy administration to force Alabama to accept court-ordered desegregation. After a tense confrontation, President Kennedy federalized the Alabama National Guard and Wallace backed down, allowing Vivian Malone and James Hood to become the first African Americans to enroll (...)

  12. On the Synthesis of Historical Linguistics and Cognate Disciplines.Frank Cabrera - forthcoming - In Aviezer Tucker & David Černín (eds.), The Bloomsbury Handbook of Big History: The Philosophy of the Historical Sciences. Bloomsbury Academic.
The empirical and theoretical resources of different disciplines are often combined to shed light on questions that concern the deep history of humanity, such as the geographic origin of people groups, patterns of migration, and the diffusion of culture. In this article, I discuss three ways in which other disciplines, such as biology and archaeology, are integrated with historical linguistics to enhance our understanding of the past. First, other disciplines provide background knowledge that helps to constrain and assess competing historical (...)

The process of inductive inference.Frank Thilly - 1904 - [Columbia, Mo.]: The University of Missouri.
In this classic work of philosophy, Thilly provides a comprehensive overview of inductive reasoning and its role in scientific inquiry. With clear examples and lucid prose, Thilly's text remains an essential resource for anyone seeking to understand the nature of knowledge and the scientific method. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. This work is in the "public domain in the United States of (...)

The Personal Temperaments of William James and Josiah Royce.Frank M. Oppenheim - 1999 - International Philosophical Quarterly 39 (3):291-303.
Using six decades of researches unknown to Perry, I here aim to survey carefully the various factors affecting the personal temperaments of William James and Josiah Royce. Such a survey creates a background against which later one can better examine their philosophical interactions. Initially, a comparison-contrast of their temperaments symbolizes James as an "eye" and Royce as an "ear". Then a more detailed study explores their differences in age and health, personal gifts, the "significant others" in their lives, educational opportunities, (...)

Critical thinking in social and psychological inquiry.Frank C. Richardson & Brent D. Slife - 2011 - Journal of Theoretical and Philosophical Psychology 31 (3):165-172.
Yanchar, Slife, and their colleagues have described how mainstream psychology's notion of critical thinking has largely been conceived of as “scientific analytic reasoning” or “method-centered critical thinking.” We extend here their analysis and critique, arguing that some version of the one-sided instrumentalism and confusion about tacit values that characterize scientistic approaches to inquiry also color phenomenological, critical theoretical, and social constructionist viewpoints. We suggest that hermeneutic/dialogical conceptions of inquiry, including the idea of social theory as itself a form of ethically (...)

Language and Deed: Rediscovering Politics Through Heidegger's Encounter with German Idealism.Frank Schalow (ed.) - 1998 - Rodopi.
This book examines Heidegger's controversial relation to politics as it grows out of his understanding of his predecessors in German Idealism, most notably, Hegel. This way of developing a dialogue between Heidegger and Hegel on the issue of politics provides an important context for questioning the former's link with National Socialism. Yet the book does not simply condemn Heidegger for his Nazi involvement nor claim that his thinking is free from dangerous political implications. On the contrary, a second level of (...)

McColl and Minimization.Frank Markham Brown - 2010 - History and Philosophy of Logic 31 (4):337-348.
In 1952, Quine showed that the problem of reducing a propositional formula to a simplest normal equivalent can be solved in two steps, viz., (i) express the given formula, Φ, equivalently as the disjunction of all its prime implicants, and (ii) find all non-redundant disjunctions of the latter that are equivalent to Φ (Quine 1952). However, it seems not generally known that an ingenious form of the same two-step process was published by Hugh McColl in 1878.

Political Writings of Friedrich Nietzsche is an anthology that gathers together, for the first time, the political commentary and writings found throughout Nietzsche's corpus. Included is an historical introduction which demonstrates that Nietzsche was an observer of and responded to the political events which defined the Bismarckian era.

The EU 's role in income redistribution and insurance: Support, norm‐setter or provider? A review of justice‐based arguments.Frank Vandenbroucke - 2022 - European Journal of Philosophy 30 (2):471-487.
Income redistribution and insurance are core functions of welfare states. What role should the EU play in this domain? I examine the purchase of normative theorizing on social justice on this question, focusing on the contrast between three models of EU involvement: the EU as Support, which implies the sharing of resources through intergovernmental transfers; the EU as Provider, which implies EU cross‐border transfers towards individual citizens; the EU as Norm‐setter, which implies that the EU formulates normative policy ideals. I (...)

We show that a stable groupG satisfying certain commutator conditions is nilpotent. Furthermore, a soluble stable group with generically splitting automorphism of prime order is nilpotent-by-finite. In particular, a soluble stable group with a generic element of prime order is nilpotent-by-finite.

In addition, reasons for the current difference in AMS use on organic dairy farms between both countries were explored. To answer above mentioned aims, farmers and advisors in both countries were interviewed using a focus group approach. Questions of the interviews were based on a literature review on sustainability issues (...)

On the structure of stable groups.Frank O. Wagner - 1997 - Annals of Pure and Applied Logic 89 (1):85-92.
In this paper, we shall survey results about the group-theoretic properties of stable groups. These can be classified into three main categories, according to the strength of the assumptions needed: chain conditions, generic types, and some form of rank. Each category has its typical application: Chain conditions often allow us to deduce global properties from local ones, generic properties are used to get definable groups from undefinable ones, and rank is necessary to interpret fields in certain group actions. While originally (...)

Soldier enhancement: ethical risks and opportunities.M. Beard, J. Galliott & Sandra Lynch - unknown
Over the past decade, interest in human enhancement has waxed and waned. The initial surge of interest and funding, driven by the US Army’s desire for a ‘Future Force Warrior’ has partly given way to the challenges of meeting operational demands abroad. However the ethical opportunities provided by soldier enhancement demand that investigation of its possibilities continue. Benefits include enhanced decision-making, improved force capability, reduced force size and lower casualty rates. These benefits — and enhancement itself — carry concomitant risks, (...)
