On May 14, 1940, Otto Neurath and Marie Reidemeister fled from the harbour of Scheveningen in The Hague to England. It was the last boat that could escape from Holland before the German occupiers took the city. Years earlier, in 1934, they had fled the same danger from Vienna to Holland. Otto Neurath can be seen as the godfather of today's infographics. In the Gesellschafts- und Wirtschaftsmuseum (Social & Economic Museum) that he founded in Vienna, developments in various (...) areas of society were shown by means of pictorial statistics to a broad audience - rich and poor, literate and illiterate. At the Museum, Otto Neurath acted as the scientific director and inspirer, Marie Reidemeister as the 'Transformer' of data into sketches, and Gerd Arntz as the head of the graphics department which designed pictograms and layouts. These three continued that work in Holland under the acronym Isotype (International System Of TYpographic Picture Education). After internment as 'enemy aliens' on the Isle of Man, Neurath & Reidemeister were able to continue their work in the UK. Through Wolfgang Foges and his book packaging firm Adprint, they were commissioned to design Isotype charts for books supported by the Ministry of Information during the war - what might be called 'soft propaganda'. From 1942, Isotypes were supplied for information about the embryonic welfare state (Beveridge Plan), for illustrated books about Britain's allies (USA and USSR), and on what British democracy should look like after the war. This book illustrates around 250 Isotypes from these publications and provides information about the producers, authors, editors, and designers, and not least about the working relationship between the Isotype Institute and Adprint. The examples presented show the remarkable quality of the graphics, produced under less than ideal circumstances during wartime. (shrink)

What counts as human rationality: reasoning processes that embody content-independent formal theories, such as propositional logic, or reasoning processes that are well designed for solving important adaptive problems? Most theories of human reasoning have been based on content-independent formal rationality, whereas adaptive reasoning, ecological or evolutionary, has been little explored. We elaborate and test an evolutionary approach, Cosmides' social contract theory, using the Wason selection task. In the first part, we disentangle the theoretical concept of a “social contract” from that (...) of a “cheater-detection algorithm”. We demonstrate that the fact that a rule is perceived as a social contract — or a conditional permission or obligation, as Cheng and Holyoak proposed — is not sufficient to elicit Cosmides' striking results, which we replicated. The crucial issue is not semantic, but pragmatic: whether a person is cued into the perspective of a party who can be cheated. In the second part, we distinguish between social contracts with bilateral and unilateral cheating options. Perspective change in contracts with bilateral cheating options turns P & not-Q responses into not-P & Q responses. The results strongly support social contract theory, contradict availability theory, and cannot be accounted for by pragmatic reasoning schema theory, which lacks the pragmatic concepts of perspectives and cheating detection. In contrast, the authors consider heuristics to be adaptive strategies that evolved in tandem with fundamental psychological mechanisms. The recognition heuristic, arguably the most frugal of all heuristics, makes inferences from patterns of missing knowledge. This heuristic exploits a fundamental adaptation of many organisms: the vast, sensitive, and reliable capacity for recognition. The authors specify the conditions under which the recognition heuristic is successful and when it leads to the counter-intuitive less-is-more effect in which less knowledge is better than more for making accurate inferences. Morphogenetische Untersuchungen ermöglichen eine zuverlässige Ermittlung der homologen Elemente in der Lobenlinie der Ammonoidea. Umgekehrt lehrt eine Analyse hypothetischer Vorstellungen, die man sich über die phylogenetischen Zusammenhänge gewisser Ammoneen-Gruppen gebildet hatte, daß sich daraus die Homologie-Beziehungen nicht herleiten lassen. Es besteht keine Konkordanz zwischen den morphologischen Tatbeständen und den stammesgeschichtlichen Konstruktionen, die sich in diesen Fällen als falsch erweisen. Daraus wird der Schluß gezogen, daß der Homologie-Begriff nur unvoreingenommen morphologisch definiert und interpretiert werden kann. Die auf morphologischer Grundlage ermittelten Homologien (...) entscheiden über die Möglichkeit stammesgeschichtlicher Verknüpfungen, nicht aber umgekehrt phylogenetische Deutungen über die Homologie. Ebenso kann die stets unsichere Phylogenie nicht zur Grundlage der Systematik gemacht werden. Auch da liegen die logisch-methodischen Zusammenhänge umgekehrt: Die im System ausgedrückte Formverwandtschaft ist die Basis der Phylogenie und nicht die Phylogenie die der Morphologie. Die Theorie eines Phylogenetischen Systems der Organismen wird abgelehnt.Morphogenetic investigations provide a firm basis for an exact identification of homologous elements in the suture line of ammonoids. On the other hand an analysis of current phylogenetic connections of certain ammonoid groups demonstrates that they give no clue for tracing homologies. There is no agreement between the morphological facts and the phylogenetic fictions, the latter in these cases being definitely wrong. Therefrom it is concluded that the concept of homology can only be defined and interpreted on a morphological basis. The established homologies are decisive for the admissibility of phylogenetic connections and not phylogenetic inferences for the recognition of homologies. In the same manner systematics cannot be based on the always unsafe phylogeny, but only on the actual facts of morphology. The concept of a phylogenetic classification of organisms is rejected. The three books presented in this volume, _Integral Humanism_, _Freedom in the Modern World_, and _A Letter on Independence_, were all written in the early 1930s, a time of dire trouble for France. France was then surrounded by enemies preparing for war and was itself so violently split between parties of Left and Right that it seemed on the verge of Civil War. In this collection, Jacques Maritain accepts the responsibility of a Christian philosopher to actively address the agonizing practical (...) problems of the time. Maritain discusses major political issues such as the relation of freedom and religion, the opposition of democracy to any form of totalitarianism, the relation of the spiritual and the temporal, the need for an integral and Christian humanism, and the prospects for a new Christian civilization, all in opposition to the materialism of both communism and capitalism. Against the fierce antagonism of the parties of the political Left and Right, Maritain declares a plague on both their houses and strongly affirms the need for independence from both of them. He does so by distinguishing between two senses of the terms Left and Right, one denoting a temperamental or physiological disposition, the other a definite political position. In the latter sense, Maritain asserts that he is an independent, while acknowledging that he is, by temperament, a man of the Left. (shrink)
