Frontoparietal connectivity has been suggested to be important in conscious processing and its interruption is thought to be one mechanism of general anesthesia. Data in animals demonstrate that feedforward processing of information may persist during the anesthetized state, while feedback processing is inhibited. We investigated the directionality and functional organization of frontoparietal connectivity in 10 human subjects anesthetized with propofol on two separate occasions. Multichannel electroencephalography and a computational method of assessing directed functional connectivity were employed. We demonstrate that directed (...) feedback connectivity is diminished with loss of consciousness and returns with responsiveness to verbal command. We also applied the Dendrogram classification method to assess the global organization of directed functional connectivity during consciousness and anesthesia. We demonstrate a state-specific hierarchy and subject-specific subhierarchy in functional organization. These data support the hypothesis that specific states of human consciousness are defined by specific states of frontoparietal connectivity. (shrink)

Because robots are physically embodied agents, touch is one of the important modalities through which robots communicate with humans. Among the several factors that affect human-robot interaction, this research focuses on the effect of a user’s personality traits on tactile interactions with a robot. Participants interacted freely with a robot and their tactile interaction patterns were analyzed. Several classifiers were used to examine the effect of a participant’s degree of extroversion on tactile communication patterns with the robot and our results (...) showed that a user’s personality traits affected the way in which they interacted with the robot. Specifically, important features of Bayesian networks, such as the Markov blanket and what-if/goal-seeking power were tested and showed the effect of personality on tactile interaction with respect to where and how participants touched the robot. We also found that, by using Bayesian network classifiers, a user’s personality traits can be inferred based on tactile communication patterns. (shrink)

This study examines a deep-seated anti-missionary sentiment of Korean theologians and church historians. Chai-Choon Kim and Jong-Sung Rhee were arguably most responsible for popularizing anti-missionary sentiment among Korean Christians. The main reason for the criticisms of both Kim and Rhee against the American Presbyterian Korea missionaries was the supposedly fundamentalist schisms of the Presbyterian Church of Korea in the 1950s, which both Kim and Rhee reasoned to have been originated from their Old Princeton theology. The theological rationale of both Kim (...) and Rhee was the Barthian triumph frame that the Reformed Orthodoxy including the Old Princeton theology, which had been suspected of having a fundamentalist tendency, was overcome by Karl Barth’s Neo-Orthodoxy. These theological anti-missionary criticisms facilitated some younger Korean church historians, especially both Kyung-Bae Min and Man-Yul Lee, to view Korean church history from an anti-missionary, Korean ethnic nationalist perspective. Min emphasizes some seemingly good but anecdotal works of individual Korean native Christians, hence resulting in depreciation of the works of the missionaries and their Korean coworkers. Following Min, Lee goes even further, praising what some individual Korean Christians did for socio-political (anti-establishment) purposes and ignoring what the missionaries and their Korean coworkers did cooperatively for their Korean churches. Those Korean theologians and church historians with quite a strong anti-missionary sentiment might have succeeded in arousing Korean Christians’ ethnic nationalism, but in so doing, they have quite surely deprived Korean Christians of their critically significant and rich ecclesiastical and theological elements which have been originated from the missionaries. Yi Hwang is Korean giant Bo of Neo-Confucianism, Zhu Xi as their study to cases. He was the author severely criticized Wang Yangming. Lee Hwang and odd peak on the "four-terminal impassioned" debate, both sides quoted Zhu's literature as an argument, and from that perspective loyal to Zhu. However, in essence is, Yi Hwang on Mencius' four-terminal, "said Zhu interpretation presupposes a set of different teachings of Confucianism system architecture, though Mencius in line with the text, but (...) out of Zhu Xi's basic position. This is one of the most crucial question is: "truth" can activities? In Zhu's of Science, the reason why is gas, there are not only activities. Based on the literature that: Yi Hwang in the interpretation of Zhu Xi's theory of qi, intentionally or unintentionally give reasons when an activity, while escaping the structure of Zhu Xi of Science. As a leading representative of Korean Confucianism, Yi T'oegye generally adhered to Zhu Xi's philosophical viewpoint, also writing several essays criticizing Wang Yang-ming's differences with Zhu Xi. In the debate between Yi T'oegye and his contemporary, Ki Kobong on the "Four Buddings" and the "Seven Emotions," both sides appealed to Zhu Xi's texts in the belief that they were being faithful to Zhu Xi's standpoint. But in fact, Yi's interpretation of "Four Buddings" presupposes a philosophical framework that differs from that of Zhu Xi. In this Yi deviates from Zhu Xi's standpoint, although he remains faithful to Mencius' texts. The key point of this debate lies in the question of whether "li" can be active. In Zhu Xi's philosophical framework, "li" as the ontological ground for "qi" has mere being but not activity. In this paper I demonstrate that in his interpretation of Zhu Xi's doctrine of "li" and "qi," Yi unconsciously ascribes a kind of activity to "li "and hence deviates from Zhu Xi's original philosophical position. 이황과 이이의 성리학에 대한 기존의 연구는 주로 이론의 논리적 정합성 여부를 판단하고 또한 이론상의 차이점을 설명하는데 주안점을 둔 측면이 강하다. 그 결과 그들은 한국 성리학사에서 대립과 갈등을 상징하는 대표적인 인물로 손꼽힌다. 그들이 서로 다른 성리학 체계를 형성하는 가장 큰 이유는 리기(理氣) 개념의 이해와 상호 기능에 대한 해석의 차이 때문이다. 아울러 그들이 경험한 시대상황과도 직접적인 연관이 있다. 이러한 종합적인 요인들로 인해 그들은 서로 다른 성리학 체계를 형성하게 되는 것이다. 그 대표적인 예가 사단칠정의 리기론적(理氣論的) 해석인데, 이황은 ‘리기호발(理氣互發)’을, 이이는 ‘기발리승(氣發理乘)’을 주장한다. 그리고 그들의 (...) 의견에 동조하는 이들이 논쟁에 가담 하면서 길고 긴 대립이 시작된다. 하지만 길게 이어질 것만 같던 대립도 결국 최종목표에서는 합의를 이룬다. 그들이 지향하는 것은 일신(一身)을 주재하는 마음을 잘 다스려 성인에 도달하는 것이다. 그리고 성인에 도달하기 위한 방법으로 그들 공히 ‘경(敬)’과 ‘성(誠)’을 제시함으로써 합의를 이룰 수 있는 계기를 마련한다. 따라서 필자는 이황과 이이 성리학을 중심으로 그들의 대립과 갈등의 원인, 그리고 대립을 종식하고 합의를 이루는 일련을 과정을 살펴봄으로써, 경(敬), 성(誠)의 마음수양을 통한 성인지향이 그들 성리학의 대립을 극복할 수 있는 계기를 마련하고 있음을 살펴보려 한다. 결국 필자의 본 논문은 이황과 이이 성리학의 정합성을 묻고자 하는 것이 아니라 그들 성리학의 차이 극복을 위해 새로운 방안을 모색하려는 것이다. 미발수행법은 마음이 지각하기 이전의 상태에서 욕망의 고리를 끊기 위한 수양의 방편 이다. 이황의 ‘미발수행법’은 현대 자본주의 사회에서 인간이 어떻게 욕망을 제어하고 조 절하고 절제하여 사회적 갈등의 원인을 제거하는가에 깊은 성찰이 녹아있다. 이황은 마음이 미발 상태에 있을 때는 기가 힘쓰지 않은 때이며, 오로지 리가 있을 뿐 이어서 악이 존재하지 않을 때임을 말한다. 미발의 상태에서 현실로 넘어오는 그 찰나에 마음은 리와 기라는 결합체이지만, 이 때 기가 용사하지 않으므로 리의 순선함이 그대로 발현될 수 있다. 이황은 인간의 욕망을 제거하는 방법으로 그 보이지 않는 곳에서도 (...) 삼가 조심하며, 그 듣지 않는 곳에서도 두려워해야 함을 역설한다. 희노애락이 아직 발하지 않 은 곳, 곧 보이지도 듣지도 않는 곳이 감정이 아직 싹트지 않은 곳이다. 이 지점에서 경계 하고 두려워하는 자세로 수행처를 삼으라는 것이다. 이황은 미발의 때에 천리의 본연을 함양하고 이발의 때에 인욕의 기가 용사하지 못하도 록 경계한다. 이것은 마음이 수양의 주체임을 강조한 대목이다. 본원의 함양이라는 것은 리의 함양인데, 리의 본체가 발현한 사단 혹은 도심을 일컫는다. 이때의 리는 태극이므로 마음속에 천리가 내재해 있기에 미발의 때에 존양과 성찰이 선제 조건으로 자리 잡을 수 있다. 이황은 인간 본성이 발하여 감정으로 드러나는 과정에는 경을 가지고 수양을 거듭하 면 천리와 이욕에 어둡지 않게 된다는 입장이다. 경(敬)으로서 중(中)을 가진 사람의 마음은 천리와 융화하여 흔적이 없게 되므로 마음 은 바름을 얻게 된다. 밝은 거울이나 고요한 물이 되기 위해서는 일회적인 경의 자세로는 이루어질 수 없다. 고요할 때는 천리의 본연에 젖어 들고 활동할 때는 인욕을 기미에서 끊어야만 한다 이렇게 하여 진실함이 쌓이고. 오래도록 힘써서 순수하고 익숙함에 이르게 된 다. 개체 안에 내재된 생명의 리를 잘 보존하고 함양해서 거울과 같이 밝게 비추고 물과 같이 고요함을 유지한다면, 개체의 본체는 언제나 맑아서 모든 사태에서도 굴절되지 않고 비출 수 있다. 우리 삶의 미시적 영역까지 침투한 신자유주의는 세계의 모든 영역을 시장처럼 조직될 필요가 있는 경쟁 공간으로 구성한다. 또한 시민들에게 자립성과 경쟁력을 갖춘 기업가적 주체가 될 것을 요구하며 자기 자신에 대한 책임을 강조한다. 신자유주의는 제도적으로 인 간의 욕망을 부추겨서 경쟁의 공간에서 탐욕으로 치닫게 하는 경우가 발생한다. 이는 타자 의 욕망을 욕망하게 하는 구조로 만들고 욕망을 따라가기 위해 자칫 인간의 기본적인 욕구 를 넘어서는 사태로 번질 가능성이 있다. 우리는 신자유주의라는 미명하에 무한경쟁으로 내몰리고 경쟁의식에 대한 압박감으로 순조로운 일상이 깨지는 경우가 생긴다. 신경증, 무 기력증, 번 아웃, 공항장애 등의 질환이 급증하는 원인의 하나가 이런 경쟁의식의 대한 긴 장감이다. 이런 긴장감이 절제되지 못할 경우 사회적 갈등이 유발하게 된다. 이황은 성리학적 체계의 완성을 실천을 통해서 완성하고자 한다. 실천은 내면의 수양을 통해 천리체인을 이루고 체득하는 것을 말하는데, 이것이 미발수행법으로 나타난다. 미발 수행을 통해 인욕이 제거되고 리의 존재성을 발견하며 참된 자아를 완성해간다. 이황의 미발수행법이 우리사회에 만연하고 있는 사회적 갈등을 해결하는데 하나의 방편이 될 것으로 보인다. I argue that naturalistic pictures provide a guide and a justification for our concept of colour. The crucial relation between pictures and colours is to be brought out, not by reference to the ‘internal’ relations between colours (for example, what differentiates green from red), but by considering how colours are differentiated from the wider range of visually discriminable qualities. Naturalistic pictures effect such a differentiation by simulating colour-like qualities such as gold, amber, and blond, while requiring nothing beyond the three-dimensional (...) manifold of colour space. The seeming simplicity and salience of colour in our visual experience should be recognized as depending on our familiarity with this reductive power of naturalistic pictures. While some sense of these issues has been given expression by many thinkers, the idea is significantly articulated in remarks of Wittgenstein's that were prompted by his reading of a letter the painter Runge wrote to Goethe. No exact definition of an “organic” substance has been agreed upon by the chemical community and textbook definitions vary substantially. The question of what exactly constitutes an “organic” substance is explored in this paper. Various carbon-containing substances that have been by some considered to be “inorganic” are examined in an attempt to ascertain whether carbon in these compounds display different chemical behavior than what is expected of carbon in an “organic” substance. Types of substances considered are carbon allotropes, carbides, carbonates (...) and bicarbonates, cyanide and cyanate ions, carbido clusters, carbon oxides, and compounds without hydrogen.Graphic abstract. A solution to the problem of “overcriminalization” appears to be decriminalization of certain crimes. This Essay focuses on a group of crimes that has been labeled “proxy crimes” as a candidate to be eliminated. What are proxy crimes? Douglas Husak defines them as “offenses designed to achieve a purpose other than to prevent the conduct they explicitly proscribe.” Michael Moore describes them as involving situations where we “use one morally innocuous act as a proxy for another, morally wrongful act or (...) mental state.” Put that way, proxy crimes seem highly problematic, and Larry Alexander and Kimberly Ferzan bluntly put it, “We reject proxy crimes.” This Essay asks whether we should reject proxy crimes by presenting and evaluating Alexander and Ferzan’s treatment of the subject. After describing several different types of crimes that may be characterized as proxy crimes and Alexander and Ferzan’s rejection of most of them and their arguments for doing so, this Essay argues that their rejection of proxy crimes is incomplete, which leaves their theory open to a range of possibilities regarding the proper place of proxy crimes in criminal law. This Essay concludes that getting a handle on the problem of proxy crimes and overcriminalization requires a theory of the state and an articulation of the proper relationship between the state and its citizens that can give guidance on when the state can demand obedience from citizens to support the state and when failures to comply with such demands render one criminally culpable. Without such a theory, proposals to address overcriminalization cannot travel very far. (shrink)

The article provides journalists with an ethical rationale for covering political character while acknowledging the human need for privacy and then outlines a set of characterrelated issues that journalists should explore. It concludes with the suggestion that journalists should once again begin to cover the public record of political figures in-depth and that this public record be linked (...) with deeper, psychologically based explorations of character. ABSTRACT Doxxing is a form of online abuse where doxxers deliberately seek and publish their targets’ personal information without consent, often with malicious intent such as ruining their reputation. Despite its prevalence, doxxing has received little scholarly attention compared to other forms of online aggression, and almost no study has approached doxxing from a language and discourse perspective. This exploratory study analyzes 464 online forum posts and comments related to doxxing during the on-going pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong, addressing the (...) overarching question: In what ways is doxxing a discursive action? More specifically, how is doxxing realized intertextually? What are the discourse strategies that forum participants employ to legitimize doxxing? Informed by Critical Discourse Analysis, the analysis begins by illustrating doxxing as an intertextual and recontextualized social practice, focusing on a forum thread that discloses a police officer’s personal information. The core part of the paper discusses four key legitimation strategies of doxxing identified in the data, rationalization, definition, construction of negative-Other, and victimizing ‘Us’. The paper concludes by considering the role of doxxing in the Hong Kong social movement, and outlining some directions for future research. (shrink)

Drawing on conservation of resources theory, this study examined the moderating role of ethical leader behavior in the effects of daily perceived job insecurity on work outcomes the next day (i.e., work engagement and customer-directed helping) through occupational regret the next morning among frontline service employees working in adverse work situations (i.e., the coronavirus disease pandemic). Using experience sampling method, data were collected from 135 frontline service employees across five consecutive workdays. The results showed that daily perceived job insecurity had (...) a negative indirect effect on work engagement and customer-directed helping the next day through (increased) occupational regret the next day in the morning. In addition, ethical leader behavior moderated the negative indirect effect of daily perceived job insecurity on next-day work engagement and customer-directed helping through next-morning occupational regret. Specifically, these negative effects were especially stronger among employees who had observed low levels of ethical leader behavior the previous day. The theoretical implications of the present findings for researchers and their practical implications for managers are discussed. (shrink)

Eric Voegelin’s Asian Political Thought brings together scholars from both Asia and the West to reflect upon the political philosopher’s thought about China, Japan, Korea, Central Asia, and India, showing how Voegelin’s approach can illuminate the region but also what are the possibilities that Asia offers in the twentieth-first century.

What aspects of philosophical style really count? What aspects of philosophical writing count only as matters of style? Some features of philosophical writing and talking do seem to be of merely ornamental significance, worthy subjects only of gossip or banter. We are familiar with the academic sneer with which poor Professor Kluck is charged with having “somehow managed to confuse” one thing with another. A more serious stylistic matter, of course, would be Professor Kluck’s own willingness to use the apparatus (...) of modal logic in his pathetic endeavors. Or is that a matter of style? If so, does the same concept apply to such amusing and affective phenomena as accent and cadence? We have heard Professor Chisholm’s rising terminal voice inflection, if only because it is so widely imitated. One thinks of Professor Earle’s favorite condemnation “boring” pronounced with an “o” which seems to touch base on every vowel sound known to man. We are impressed by Goodman’s pithiness, and we register his penchant for alliterative triples. We compare Bergmann’s Laocöonian baroque prose with Quine’s soothing urbanity. It is an interesting fact that these are the features which come to mind when we begin to consider the whole question of philosophical style. Have we so internalized the parts that really count that they seem “white,” neutral, style-free? There might well be historical factors which encourage such blindness. Varying degrees of lingering transcendentalism about philosophical method would not be easily reconciled with the awful idea that one is merely speaking a local dialect. Of course the transcendentalism itself is rarely owned up to as such, as if it is assumed that it is Reason which speaks but that it is in poor taste to say so. Alternative methods, when confronted, generate distaste, horror, or the head-shaking sort of wonderment of the Eighteenth Century Parisian who wondered how on earth anyone could be a Persian. 인간에 대한 과학적 묘사로 인간들 사이의 관계를 인지하는 것과는 반대로, 본 논문은 Emmanuel Levinas와 Iris Murdoch이 제시한 상상적이고 비논리적 형식을 통해 인지 가능한 인간관계를 살펴본다. 레비나스와 머독은 형이상학적 사유를 옹호함으로써 인간의 관계를 연구하면서, 통찰력을 가지고 이 관계를 이야기처럼 전개한다. 동시대 인물인 머독과 레비나스는 서로 다른 공간에 존재하며 피차의 존재를 알지 못하였으나 윤리 문제, 얼굴에 대한 생각, 셰익스피어 등에 대한 이해에 대해 흥미로운 유사점이 있다. 이 논문은 이 두인물이 형이상학에 대한 독서 측면에서 공유하는 윤리에 대한 비교 인식을 제시한다.
