  1. Examining the Effect of Transcranial Electrical Stimulation and Cognitive Training on Processing Speed in Pediatric Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: A Pilot Study.Ornella Dakwar-Kawar, Itai Berger, Snir Barzilay, Ephraim S. Grossman, Roi Cohen Kadosh & Mor Nahum - 2022 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 16.
ObjectiveProcessing Speed, the ability to perceive and react fast to stimuli in the environment, has been shown to be impaired in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. However, it is unclear whether PS can be improved following targeted treatments for ADHD. Here we examined potential changes in PS following application of transcranial electric stimulation combined with cognitive training in children with ADHD. Specifically, we examined changes in PS in the presence of different conditions of mental fatigue.MethodsWe used a randomized double-blind (...)

Negation Generates Nonliteral Interpretations by Default.Rachel Giora, Elad Livnat, Ofer Fein, Anat Barnea, Rakefet Zeiman & Iddo Berger - 2013 - Metaphor and Symbol 28 (2):89-115.
Four experiments and 2 corpus-based studies demonstrate that negation is a determinant factor affecting novel nonliteral utterance-interpretation by default. For a nonliteral utterance-interpretation to be favored by default, utterances should be potentially ambiguous between literal and nonliteral interpretations. They should therefore be (a) unfamiliar, (b) free of semantic anomaly or any kind of internal incongruity, and (c) unbiased by contextual information. Experiments 1–3 demonstrate that negative utterances, meeting these 3 conditions, were interpreted metaphorically (This is not a safe) or sarcastically (...)

Educational Leadership with an Ethics of Plurality and Natality.Iris Berger - 2014 - Studies in Philosophy and Education 34 (5):475-487.
This paper aims to impregnate the concept of educational leadership with new meanings and new possibilities. I draw on Hannah Arendt’s political thought, particularly, her concepts of plurality and natality alongside the distinction she made between who and what we are, to propose a new ethics for educational leadership. An ethics of plurality and natality resists a dominant understanding of education as developing a what, namely, producing persons with particular qualities and talents. I include a research story from the field (...)

Gender, race, and political empowerment:: South african Canning workers, 1940-1960.Iris Berger - 1990 - Gender and Society 4 (3):398-420.
Based on a case study of the South African food and canning industry at the Cape from 1940 to 1960, this article examines the conditions that fostered women's high level of involvement both in the trade union and in local and national political organizations concerned with gender and racial issues. Particularly important were women's prevalence in seasonal labor, which gave them few individual options for improving their situation at work; a progressive, nonracial trade union that encouraged close ties between family, (...)

Sweet but sour: Impaired attention functioning in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus.Hayley M. Lancrei, Yonatan Yeshayahu, Ephraim S. Grossman & Itai Berger - 2022 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 16:895835.
Children diagnosed with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) are at risk for neurocognitive sequelae, including impaired attention functioning. The specific nature of the cognitive deficit varies; current literature underscores early age of diabetes diagnosis and increased disease duration as primary risk factors for this neurocognitive decline. Forty-three children with T1DM were evaluated for Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) symptomatology using the MOXO continuous performance test (MOXO-CPT) performed during a routine outpatient evaluation. The study cohort demonstrated a significant decline in all four (...)

Light it up: Highly efficient multigene delivery in mammalian cells.Simon Trowitzsch, Martin Klumpp, Ralf Thoma, Jean-Philippe Carralot & Imre Berger - 2011 - Bioessays 33 (12):946-955.
Multigene delivery and expression systems are emerging as key technologies for many applications in contemporary biology. We have developed new methods for multigene delivery and expression in eukaryotic hosts for a variety of applications, including production of protein complexes for structural biology and drug development, provision of multicomponent protein biologics, and cell‐based assays. We implemented tandem recombineering to facilitate rapid generation of multicomponent gene expression constructs for efficient transformation of mammalian cells, resulting in homogenous cell populations. Analysis of multiple parameters (...)
