Article en hommage à Jacques English dans lequel je propose une réflexion générale sur le thème des objets intentionnels en examinant un aspect de la solution proposée par Husserl dans son manuscrit de 1894 sur les objets intentionnels qui concerne le statut ontologique des objets de pensée et leur temporalité. J’aborde cette question par le biais de l’individuation des contenus intentionnels et leur temporalité dans les manuscrits de Bernau publiés dans le volume XXXIII des Husserliana . Je m’intéresse en (...) particulier au sens que prend le principium individuationis dans la cinquième partie de ces manuscrits de Husserl qui s'intitule «De la phénoménologie de l’individuation : la temporalité des objets d’expérience, des objets imaginaires et des objets idéaux». In this series of dialogues, Derrida discusses and elaborates on some of the central themes of his work, such as the problems of genesis, justice, authorship and death. Combining autobiographical reflection with philosophical enquiry, Derrida illuminates the ideas that have characterized his thought from its beginning to the present day. If there is one feature that links these contributions, it is the theme of singularity - the uniqueness of the individual, the resistance of existence to philosophy, the temporality of the (...) singular and exceptional moment, and the problem of exemplarity. The second half of this book contains an essay by Maurizio Ferraris, in which he explores the questions of indication, time and the inscription of the transcendental in the empirical. A work of outstanding philosophy and scholarship, the essay is developed in close proximity to Derrida and in dialogue with figures such as Plato, Aristotle, Plotinus, Kant, Hegel and Heidegger. It thereby provides a useful introduction to the philosophy of one of Italy's most prominent philosophers as well as an excellent complement to Derrida's own ideas. A Taste for the Secret consists of material that has never before appeared in English. Derrida is one of the few Continental philosopher-critics as esteemed for his writings about visual topics as for his attention to more textually based subjects. This volume collects key and scarce writings about the making and apprehension of "visual objects," though the chief focus is on drawing, painting, and photography (with sorties into video and film). What preoccupied Derrida when it came to the visual arts is visibility: what does a pencil actually trace-make visible- when someone is making a drawing? (...) What aspect of the drawing documents the artist's thought and what part documents an external object? What comes from painting other than a painting? The writings collected range from essays originally published in small magazines and journals to never-before translated talks and interviews. There are 19 pieces in all, of which seven have been previously published in English.. The rest have been translated into English for the first time. None is included in the Press's already substantial inventory of works by Derrida. The collection comprises three thematic sections: (1) "The Traces of the Visible" is attuned to the field's preoccupation with the "trace," what is an "image," visibility, and space. (2) "Rhetoric of the Line: Painting, Drawing" engages nearly every register in which one can experience art: the materiality of line and text, the eros of aesthetic experience, the politics of color, and the components of painting, writing and drawing taken together. (3) "Spectralities of the Image: Photography, Video, Cinema and Theatre" explores the media we most readily associate with modern and contemporary art practices. (shrink)

According to foundationalism, mathematical propositions form a complex objective structure we have to discover and in which each proposition depends for its truth on the propositions that precede and ground it. Proofs that only establish the truth of their conclusions are contrasted with proofs that give also the objective reason of that truth. Foundationalism claims that the cognitive resources required by these proofs are universally available. This paper tries to undermine that claim and to show that foundationalism is a dead (...) end. On peut, en reprenant la distinction importante que fait Paul Boghossian dans _La_ _Peur du savoir _, distinguer deux formes de constructivisme social. Selon la première, il n’y a pas de faits qui soient indépendants du genre de théorie que nous choisissons pour les décrire. Selon la deuxième, moins radicale et à première vue plus plausible, ce sont seulement les faits d’une certaine catégorie, ceux qui ont trait à ce qui constitue une croyance justifiée ou rationnelle, qui sont socialement dépendants (...) et, par conséquent, relatifs : nos croyances peuvent être justifiées par des données qui ne sont pas nécessairement le résultat d’une construction, mais ce qui constitue ou ne constitue pas une donnée pertinente et probante pour l’adoption d’une croyance l’est forcément. Among the main reactions to scepticism, fallibilism is certainly the most popular nowadays. However, fallibilism faces a very strong and well-known objection. It has to grant that concessive knowledge attributions—assertions of the form “I know that p but it might be that not p”—can be true. Yet, these assertions plainly sound incoherent. Fallibilists have proposed to explain this incoherence pragmatically. The main proponents of this approach appeal to Gricean implicatures (Rysiew in Noûs 35(4):477514, 2001; Dougherty and Rysiew in Philos Phenomenol (...) Res 78(1):123132, 2009; Dougherty and Rysiew in Synthese 181(3):395403, 2011). Very recently, some philosophers have observed that fallibilists can also explain this apparent incoherence pragmatically if they embrace a (context-sensitive) certainty norm for assertion (Petersen in Synthese 196(11):4691–4710, 2019; Beddor in Philos Impr 20(8), 2020; Vollet in Dialectica 74:3, 2020). In this paper, I argue for the superiority of this latter explanation over its older rivals. (shrink)

Maurits Cornelis Escher’s 1938 lithograph, Cycle, illustrates what mathematical physicist Roger Penrose calls ‘impossible objects’. The illusion of three-dimensionality, the innovative use of tessellation, and the incorporation of traditionally figurative elements induce the viewer to perceive the lithographic print as depicting a visually plausible reality built on the deconstructive metamorphosis of man into cube. It is Escher’s ability to paradoxically combine the radical oppositions of man and cube, landscape and geometric abstraction into an apparently harmonious composition where shapes repeat with (...) subtle variation and almost imperceptibly transition into radically different shapes that I want to use as a visual paradigm for conceptualizing the shifts in human consciousness in the digital age. Roger Penrose, path-breaking theorist of consciousness as a physical but non-computational process, was inspired by and inspired Escher. Penrose’s provisional concepts of consciousness, time and space can be visually compared to Escher’s earlier man-cube renderings, where each of these individual design elements allows the transition to another shape. In other words, Penrose’s theories, like Escher’s design concepts, illustrate a moment of transition in consciousness theory. As in Escher’s Cycle, the individual elements are being continually redefined, reshaped and revealed. Each may be a unique distortion of the previous, but this does not mean that it is disconnected or independent of the final outcome. These distortions are transitional elements that lead us visually to the other side of the composition. Radical transformations and developing connectedness in the boundaries between art, technology and science function like the individual elements in Escher’s Cycle. As we try to define the shifts in human consciousness occurring in the digital age, visually speaking, we are focusing on only one element right in the middle of an Escher metamorphosis, unable to see exactly how this element will be part of the completed design. This thought can be both frightening and liberating: frightening because we humans are used to relying on boundaries and predictable outcomes to feel a sense of control, liberating because anything and everything is possible and the changes will occur naturally as part of the transition. If Escher teaches us anything, it is that each piece in the meta-morphosis is needed to complete the big picture. (shrink)

This prize-winning book, first published in France in 1982 and now available in an English translation, investigates the question of human subjectivity.

Beaucoup de surprises attendent le lecteur de ce livre. D'abord celle de l'existence d'une alliance objective entre les deux géants du siècle passé, ayant pu aller jusqu'au pacte tacite, mais constamment renouvelé entre la psychanalyse et la philosophie, anti-hegélienne, bien sûr. Ensuite, celle de la connaissance approfondie des textes de Freud, dès les années 20-30, que pouvait avoir Bataille, et bien avant que Lacan ne s'en empreigne, si l'on veut bien prendre enfin en compte ses écrits du tome II de (...) ses Œuvres Complètes, publiés seulement en 1970. Mais surtout, il devient évident que ce savoir qui est à légitimer, car il est celui d'un analysant, a permis à un écrivain portant ce nom de mener un triple combat : celui, évidemment contre la pusillanimité des plumes surréalistes et toutes les positions qu'il qualifie d'icariennes au regard de l'indécence du sexe ; donc, par là même, l'ouverture d'un autre front : celui d'une réhabilitation de Sade, qui sera présenté dans ces pages comme l'ancêtre le plus direct de Freud, celui-ci offrant enfin à sa " valeur d'usage " une " valeur d'échange " ; enfin la prise en compte effective, non seulement des dangers, mais de la réelle fascination que peut exercer le fascisme sur l'esprit rendu mélanco-lique par tous les progrès d'une science qui évacue la dimension du sujet, le privant de toute attache à sa terre et son histoire. Après la mort du Roi et la mort de Dieu, l'oeuvre relue de Bataille offre ainsi l'occasion de devoir surtout se convaincre de la mort de l'Un. Il importera de bannir l'univocité du sens et d'affirmer la prise en compte, chaque fois que s'énonce un désir, de la contradiction qu'il abrite en son sein entre l'excrétion qu'il permet et la réappropriation qu'il réclame.
