Background The allocation of scarce deceased donor kidneys is a complex process. Transplant providers are increasingly relying on constructs such as frailty and cognitive function to guide kidney transplant (KT) candidate selection. Patient views of the ethical issues surrounding the use of such constructs are unclear. We sought to assess KT candidates’ attitudes and beliefs about the use of frailty and cognitive function to guide waitlist selection.Methods KT candidates were randomly recruited from an ongoing single-center cohort study of frailty and (...) cognitive function. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, and thematic analysis was performed. Inductively derived themes were mapped onto bioethics principles.Results Twenty interviews were conducted (65% contact rate, 100% participation rate) (60% male; 70% White). With respect to the use of frailty and cognitive function in waitlisting decisions, four themes emerged in which participants: (1) valued maximizing a scarce resource (utility); (2) prioritized equal access to all patients (equity); (3) appreciated a proportional approach to the use of equity and utility (precautionary utility); and (4) sought to weigh utility- and equity-based concerns regarding social support. While some participants believed frailty and cognitive function were useful constructs to maximize utility, others believed their use would jeopardize equity. Patients were uncomfortable with using single factors such as frailty or cognitive impairment to deny someone access to transplantation; participants instead encouraged using the constructs to identify opportunities for intervention to improve frailty and cognitive function prior to KT.Conclusions KT candidates’ values mirrored the current allocation strategy, seeking to balance equity and utility in a just manner, albeit with conflicting viewpoints on the appropriate use of frailty and cognitive impairment in waitlisting decisions. 정암 조광조는 性理學 이념을 바탕으로 道德政治가 구현되는 이상사회를 이룩하고자 노력하였던 사상가이며, 그가 행하고자 한 정치를 至治라고 부른다. 정암에게 있어서 政治란 단순히 지배하고 통치하는 권력유지의 차원이 아니라 修養과 感化의 정치 곧 德治主義의 관점에서 풀이된다. 그리고 덕치의 시작은 지도자인 임금에게 달려있다. 어떠한 인물이 정치지도자가 되느냐에 따라서 국가의 미래가 결정된다고 볼 수 있다. 중종은 1510년 직접 謁聖試를 실시하여 策題를 출제하는데, 여기서 정암은 을과 제1인자로 합격한다. 이것이 「謁聖試策」으로 정암 도학사상의 핵심을 담고 있는 매우 중요한 저술이다. 「알성시책」에서 정암은 나라의 기강이 바로 서고 법도가 정해지기 위해서는 (...) 오직 임금의 마음에 달려있다고 전한다. 정암이 말하는 지도자의 요건은 4가지로 말할 수 있다. 첫째, 정치지도자는 자신이 지향할 가치적 목표와 정치이념을 확립하여 정치적 목표를 분명하게 제시해야 한다. 정암이 중종에게 이념적 지향처로 내세운 것이 至治主義였다. 둘째, 지치의 구현원리는 공자의 道로써 仁이다. 임금이나 지도자가 되었을 때 仁의 마음에 처하여서 백성들과 한마음이 되어야 함을 말한다. 셋째, 백성들과 한마음이 되기 위해서는 먼저 임금인 자신을 수양해야 한다. 스스로를 끊임없이 성찰하고 닦음으로써 표면적으로는 왕의 자리에 있지만 내면은 聖人의 모습을 갖추어야 한다. 넷째, 지치를 이루기 위해서는 군주가 獨治를 하지 않고 반드시 대신을 임명하고 그에게 정사를 위임한 연후에야 다스림의 道가 선다고 하여 군신간의 신뢰를 바탕으로 군주가 재상에게 政事를 위임하는 宰相政治의 필요성을 강력하게 주청한다. 정암은 도덕적 인격을 갖춘 군주의 마음을 국가 통치의 근본으로 보고 이상적인 정치의 출발점은 군주의 마음을 바르게 하는 것이라 여겼다. 정암의 정치 지도자론은 당시의 최고지도자인 임금에게 요청 된 것이었지만, 그 내용은 현대의 정치지도자들에게도 여전히 모범이 되는 내용이며, 마땅히 적용되어져야 한다는 데서 중요한 의의를 가진다고 볼 수 있다. 조선 유학이 독자적 사상 체계를 형성하고 주자학을 심화해가는 사상사의 흐름 한가운데서 정암은 실천성을 담보하여 도학파의 역사의식을 계승하고자 하였다. 이런 입장에서 정암은 ‘어떻게 실천성을 확보할 수 있는가’ 하는 문제의식을 가졌으며, 주자학의 실천성을 확보하기 위해 ‘도덕 주체 확립’을 강조하였다. 정암은 공부의 가능성과 목적, 그리고 공부의 주체를 ‘리’에 입각하여 밝히고, 실제 공부의 실천은 ‘기’에 중점을 두는 방법을 통해 공부의 지향점과 실행 방안을 구조화함으로써 내성외왕(內聖外王)의 목표에 다가서고자 하였다. 공부의 실제에 있어 기(氣)에 주목하는 정암은 기질변화(氣質變化)의 맥락과 존천리알인욕(存天理遏人欲)의 맥락에서 각각 성(誠)과 경(敬)의 공부방법론을 제시하였다. 이어 성(誠)의 (...) 실천성을 경(敬)으로 더 구체화하면서, 마음을 지키는 방법으로 경 공부의 중요성을 제시하였다. 이어서 정암은 성(誠) 공부와 경 공부를 구체적으로 실천하는 방안들을 별도로 제시하는데, 물망물조장(勿忘勿助長), 신독(愼獨), 심강(心剛) 공부의 세 가지를 특히 강조하고 있다. 공부의 실제에 있어서 정암은 『소학』과 『근사록』을 중시하였고 특히 일용동정(日用動靜) 간에 『소학』에서 제시하는 심신의 검속을 철저히 실천하였다. 또한 정암 공부의 실제에서는 정좌(靜坐)가 두드러진다. 지치(至治)로 대표되는 경세론이 정암 사상의 핵심이라고 여기기 쉽다. 그러나 정암을 정암이도록 하는 것은 이론이나 사상이 아니다. 끊임없는 성찰과 심신의 수양을 통해 순선한 본성을 자각하고 함양하고자 했던 노력, 그것이 정암 사상의 중핵(中核)이며 정암 지치론(至治論)의 근간이다. 조선 도학파의 역사의식과 실천정신이 여실히 투영된 정암 공부론의 이 같은 정신은 이후 조선 유학을 지탱하는 기둥이 되었으므로, 정암은 결코 실패하지 않았다. McCullough, Kilpatrick, Emmons, and Larson (2001) posited that gratitude prompts individuals to behave prosocially. However, research supporting the prosocial effect of gratitude has relied on scenario and self-report methodology. To address limitations of previous research, this experiment utilised a laboratory induction of gratitude, a method that is potentially more covert than scenarios and that elicits actual grateful emotion. Prosocial responses to gratitude—operationalised as the distribution of resources to another—were paired with a self-report measure of gratitude to test the prosocial effect (...) of gratitude. To investigate positive mood as an alternative explanation, this experiment compared responses of individuals receiving a favour to responses of individuals receiving a positive outcome by chance. A total of 40 participants were randomly assigned to either a Favour or Chance condition. Participants receiving a favour helped more and reported more gratitude compared to participants in the Chance condition. (shrink)

Entrepreneurship education has a lot of research on influencing factors of entrepreneurial intention but rarely studies the influence mechanism of emotional competences on entrepreneurial intention from the perspective of social entrepreneurship. This article takes college students’ social entrepreneurs as research objects, drawing on Krueger’s model, theory of planned behavior, social cognitive theory, and triadic reciprocal determinism theory. This paper constructs a conceptual model with emotional ability, entrepreneurial self-efficacy, and entrepreneurial intention, to further study their relationship. The 312 students from China (...) College Students’ Social Entrepreneurship Project engaged in early entrepreneurship practice, conducted a questionnaire survey and used the empirical test of the structural equation model to analyze the relationship between college students’ emotional competences, entrepreneurial self-efficacy, and entrepreneurial intention. The result show: First, social–emotional competence had a positive effect on entrepreneurial intention, and the positive effect of personal affective competence on entrepreneurial intention was not supported or only partially supported. Second, all the dimensions of entrepreneurial self-efficacy were significantly and positively correlated with entrepreneurial intention. Third, emotional competence has a significant positive impact on entrepreneurial self-efficacy. Fourth, entrepreneurial self-efficacy mediated the relationship between emotional competence and entrepreneurial intention. (shrink)

The target article by Locke & Bogin (L&B) focuses on the evolution of language as a communicative tool. They neglect, however, that from infancy onwards humans have the ability to go beyond successful behaviour and to reflect upon language (and other domains of knowledge) as a problem space in its own right. This ability is not found in other species and may well be what makes humans unique.

Psychiatric diagnoses such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are primarily attributed on the basis of behavioral criteria. The aim of most of the biomedical research on ASD is to uncover the underlying mechanisms that lead to or even cause pathological behavior. However, in the philosophical and sociological literature, it has been suggested that autism is also to some extent a ‘social construct’ that cannot merely be reduced to its biological explanation. We show that a one-sided adherence to either a biological (...) or a social explanation leads to a moral dilemma, a Catch-22, for autistics and for those living with them. Such explanations close the space for self-identifying as autistic and at the same time being considered to be in good mental health. They foreclose the possibility of making sense of the lived experience of (and with) autistics. In this paper we argue that such lack of space for moral imagination inherently leads to scientific stalemate. We propose that one can only go beyond this stalemate by taking an ethical stance in theorizing, one that enables better intersubjective understanding. Only on such a view can behavior and biology be linked without either disconnecting them or reducing the one to the other. (shrink)
