Place Geography and the Ethics of Care: Introductory Remarks on the Geographies of Ethics, Responsibility and Care.Cheryl McEwan & Michael K. Goodman - 2010 - Ethics, Place and Environment 13 (2):103-112.
In a recent review article, Jeff Popke (2006, p. 510) calls for a ‘more direct engagement with theories of ethics and responsibility’ on the part of human geographers, and for a reinscription of the social as a site of ethics and responsibility. This requires that we also continue to develop ways of thinking through our responsibilities toward unseen others—both unseen neighbours and distant others—and to cultivate a renewed sense of social interconnectedness. Popke suggests that a feminist-inspired ethic of care might (...)

    Politeia as Focal Reference in Aristotles’s Taxonomy of Regimes.Micheal B. Ewbank - 2005 - Review of Metaphysics 58 (4):815-841.
THE NATURE OF POLITEIA AND ITS CANDIDACY FOR STATUS as the best regime in the doctrine of Aristotle remains a disputable question. Some scholars insist that whatever the best regime may be, it must be a kind of polity. Others, however, firmly contend that the best must be a variety of aristocracy, with a significant number arguing that the best may be a monarchy should a suitable candidate be available. Moreover, it has been argued that since the ancients did not (...)

The impact of corporate governance on financial leverage: evidence from Egypt.Rimon Micheal, K. Sandar Kyaw & Kwami H. Quao - 2025 - International Journal of Business Governance and Ethics 19 (1):1-29.
This study examines the effect of corporate governance on financial leverage of emerging market firms. This study shows the effects of corporate governance by estimating empirical model in which firms' financial leverage is dependent variable, while board size, blockholder ownership, independent directorship, and duality are independent variables. The study employs the panel dataset of 50 listed non-financial firms in Egypt in the period 2008-2019 and the econometric method for panel data, which is multiple regression model. The study suggests a significant (...)

    An Emendation in Calpurnius Flaccus.Micheal Winterbottom - 1999 - Classical Quarterly 49 (01):338-339.
The theme of the second declamation of Calpurnius Flaccus is ‘Matrona Aethiopem peperit. Arguitur adulterii’. In one of the excerpts , the accuser is arguing that for a white woman with a white husband to produce a black child is certain proof of adultery, for individual races have fixed physical characteristics to distinguish them. I give the text as argued for by W. S. Watt.

The following is a reflection on the possibility of teaching by example, and especially as the idea of teaching by example is developed in the work of Jean-Jacques Rousseau. My thesis is that Rousseau created a literary version of himself in his writings as an embodiment of his philosophy, rather in the same way and with the same purpose that Plato created a version of Socrates. This figure of Rousseau—a sort of philosophical portrait of the man of nature—is represented as (...)

Identical but not interchangeable: Preschoolers view owned objects as non-fungible.Stephanie McEwan, Madison L. Pesowski & Ori Friedman - 2016 - Cognition 146:16-21.
Owned objects are typically viewed as non-fungible-they cannot be freely interchanged. We report three experiments (total N=312) demonstrating this intuition in preschool-aged children. In Experiment 1, children considered an agent who takes one of two identical objects and leaves the other for a peer. Children viewed this as acceptable when the agent took his own item, but not when he took his peer's item. In Experiment 2, children considered scenarios where one agent took property from another. Children said the victim (...)

An exploration of empowerment in manufacturing enterprises.Anne Marie McEwan & Peter J. Sackett - 2001 - AI and Society 15 (1):40-57.
This paper investigates empowerment within manufacturing production. Empowerment is multidimensional. Understanding the implications of operationalising empowerment requires an appreciation of all its dimensions. These dimensions are captured in Empowerment Profiles, which are incorporated within a conceptual framework. A sample of the Empowerment Profiles is validated using case studies. The Empowerment Profiles appear to have potential as a tool to assist in preparing to implement empowered work strategies, focusing attention on issues to be considered.

Potent kings and antisocial heroes: lion symbolism and elite masculinity in ancient Mesopotamia and Greece.Micheál Geoghegan - 2021 - Journal of Ancient History 9 (1):1-18.
In the great kingdoms of ancient Mesopotamia, the king’s power was often evoked by means of lion symbolism. This has led scholars to conclude that lion motifs, and especially that of the lion-slaying hero, in early Greek art and literature were cultural borrowings from the more populous and urbanised civilisations to the east. Yet it is also notable that the Greek tradition, at least from the time of the Homeric poems, tended to problematise the ethics of the leonine man. This (...)

Exploring the role of the church as a ‘reformation agency’ in enhancing a socially transformative agenda in South Africa.Micheal M. Van Wyk - 2017 - HTS Theological Studies 73 (3):1-10.
International political, social, economic and religious developments influence how local communities operate. The South African church society is influenced by such developments taking place globally and which clearly influence how local churches function. This article explores the role of the contemporary church as a ‘reformation agency’ in enhancing a socially transformative agenda in South Africa. A qualitative research approach – an interpretative phenomenology design – was employed to negotiate a shared understanding through conversation and intersubjective meaning-making with church ministers, with (...)

The Gamer’s Dilemma challenges us to justify the moral difference between enacting virtual murder and virtual child molestation in video games. The Dilemma relies for its argumentative force on the claim that there is an intuitive moral difference between these acts, with the former intuited as morally acceptable and the latter as morally unacceptable. However, there has been no empirical investigation of these claims. To explore these issues, we developed an experimental survey study in which participants were asked to reflect (...)

English teaching and the weight of theory.Hunter McEwan - 1991 - Studies in Philosophy and Education 11 (2):113-121.
The division between theory and pedagogy is an example of the more traditional division between theory and practice. The paper deals with the artificiality inherent in the institutional separation of those scholars who study within a subject area and those who study the pedagogy of the subject. The paper discusses various theoretical accounts of the nature of English to make the case that theory is imbued with pedagogy. That is, theory is not neutral about teaching. How we teach is driven (...)

    A complex formulation of generalized Hamiltonian (Birkhoffian) theory.J. McEwan - 1993 - Foundations of Physics 23 (2):313-327.
Fundamental analytic, algebraic, and geometric properties of generalized Hamiltonian (Birkhoffian) theory are compared with the properties of a covering unitary phase-space formulation based on complex variables of the form (p+iq). Technical advantages in the unitary phase-space formulation are illustrated by a detailed discussion of the one-dimensional extended damped harmonic oscillator. One advantage is the ability to fully describe nonconservative constraint forces within a globally conservative system. Another advantage is that wider classes of gauge transformations are available to simplify the construction (...)

The art historian Fritz Saxl, Aby Warburg’s librarian and trusted friend, researched apart from art historical topics images of gods of late antiquity, Oriental and Greek mystery cults and the pictorial presentation of dialogue in early Christian art. This research led him to Mithraism, the images and practices of this mystery cult and in particular how Oriental thought flowed into Occidental thought. Saxl was engaged in this work for many years. In this article I touch upon Saxl’s extended correspondence with (...)
