The extended exhortation of Tyrtaeus fr. 11 W urges the audience to take up their shield and spears and fight in a defensive fashion, ‘placing foot against foot, leaning chest on chest’. The overt message of the poem is clear: do not shirk nor run away, but rather stand firm and fight. Within the poem, Tyrtaeus weaves a more subtle message, describing a hoplite group which derives its defining characteristics through possession of a stalwart, ‘passive’ courage and a shield with (...) a ‘belly’. The cohesion that this poem calls for and reproduces through its use of the second person plural and description of close, hoplite fighting, however, is disrupted by the last four lines of the poem, which form a jarring address that sit uneasily alongside the remainder of the poem. In West's text they read: ὑμεῖς δ', ὦ γυμνῆτες, ὑπ' ἀσπίδος ἄλλοθεν ἄλλοςπτώσσοντες μεγάλοις βάλλετε χερμαδίοιςδούρασί τε ξεστοῖσιν ἀκοντίζοντες ἐς αὐτούς,τοῖσι πανόπλοισιν πλησίον ἱστάμενοι. But you, light-armoured men, throw your great boulders, cowering here and there under a shield and hurling your polished spears against the enemy, as you stand near to the fully armoured men. A reanalysis of Atran's data is presented in which the comparison between Itzaj and Michigan animal names is represented in spatial rather than taxonomic form. Similarity among all subjects is also represented in spatial terms. Finally, culturally shared knowledge between the two cultures is shown to be about ten times larger than the culture-specific component unique to each culture.

It is common to think of warfare as a setting in which emotion can lead combatants to engage in unethical behavior. On this view, it is natural to conceptualize the aim of military ethics training as quelling the influence of emotion in combat in order to reduce the risk that military personnel are vulnerable to its influence. Recent research, however, indicates that what is called “emotion processing” is connected in important ways with moral judgment and behavior. In this view, acting (...) ethically is not simply a matter of subordinating emotion to reason, but of responding with appropriate rather than inappropriate emotion. In this respect, such research challenges the powerful “rationalist” account of moral judgment and behavior. More fundamentally, it calls into question the distinction between reason and emotion as a way to understand our moral sensibilities. This article describes this research and discusses work on naturalistic decision-making and neuroscience that provide support for its insights. It then suggests ways in which such research is consistent with Aristotelian notions of character and virtue. Finally, it identifies ways in which some military training implicitly draws on lessons from this body of research, and suggests how it might do so more deliberately. (shrink)

In this paper, the difficulties inherent in the debate between moral nativists and antinativists, who differ in their beliefs on the nature of systems of morality, are shown to exemplify the need for philosophers to support their views with empirical data. Furthermore, it proposes that an empirical study of first-generation immigrant populations has the potential to resolve the debate over moral nativism, as it would allow researchers to observe the moral “critical period.” Based on the recent philosophical advances made through (...) experimental evidence, this paper goes on to argue that empirical data is a valuable source of information from which philosophers ought to draw. The trend toward the “humanization” of international law reflects a greater emphasis on individuals rather than simply states as objects of concern. The advance of human rights law (HRL) has been an important impetus for this trend. Some observers suggest that humanization can be furthered even more by applying HRL rather than international humanitarian law (IHL) to hostilities between states and nonstate armed groups, unless a state explicitly declares that it is engaged in an armed conflict. This essay argues, however, (...) that a court should not defer to a state's characterization of hostilities, but should base its analysis on whether hostilities meet the criteria for an armed conflict. Applying HRL to hostilities that effectively are an armed conflict but not acknowledged as such risks diluting the legitimacy and normative force of HRL. On the one hand, if a court applies conventional stringent HRL standards, this body of law may be seen as unrealistic and is likely to be ignored. On the other hand, a court that adapts HRL standards to armed conflict may need to take a consequentialist approach at odds with HRL's deontological foundations. Clearly differentiating between HRL and IHL may thus best promote the humanization of warfare. (shrink)

In this paper, we distinguish between different sorts of assessments of algorithmic systems, describe our process of assessing such systems for ethical risk, and share some key challenges and lessons for future algorithm assessments and audits. Given the distinctive nature and function of a third-party audit, and the uncertain and shifting regulatory landscape, we suggest that second-party assessments are currently the primary mechanisms for analyzing the social impacts of systems that incorporate artificial intelligence. We then discuss two kinds of as-sessments: (...) an ethical risk assessment and a narrower, technical algo-rithmic bias assessment. We explain how the two assessments depend on each other, highlight the importance of situating the algorithm within its particular socio-technical context, and discuss a number of lessons and challenges for algorithm assessments and, potentially, for algorithm audits. The discussion builds on our team’s experience of advising and conducting ethical risk assessments for clients across dif-ferent industries in the last four years. Our main goal is to reflect on the key factors that are potentially ethically relevant in the use of algo-rithms, and draw lessons for the nascent algorithm assessment and audit industry, in the hope of helping all parties minimize the risk of harm from their use. Dazu wird sich als notwendig erweisen, auf den kontroversen Zusammenhang von geschichtsphilosophischer und religionsphilosophischer Sichtweise, insbesondere auf Fichtes Deutung des Christentums, einzugehen. In einem dritten Teil soll wenigstens knapp auf die zeitdiagnostischen Aktualität dieser Geschichtskonstruktion gerade für unsere Gegenwart eingegangen werden. Die politische Ideengeschichte hat seit dem Ende der Systemkonkurrenz zwischen Ost und West, der Transformation der Gesellschaften Mittel- und Osteuropas, aber auch mit den seit dem Wegfall des klassischen Gegenbildes dringender gewordenen Fragen nach Werten und Zielen der westlichen Demokratien, nach der Möglichkeit von Gemeinwohlorientierungen usw. neue Bedeutung gewonnen. Gibt es in dem zunehmend differenzierten und segmentierten Fach Politikwissenschaft einen Bereich, in dem die verschiedenen Fragestellungen und Ansätze zusammengeführt werden, so ist dies die Geschichte der politischen Ideen sowie die politische (...) Theorie. Insbesondere die politische Ideengeschichte erweist sich dabei als das Laboratorium, in dem gegenwärtige politische Konstellationen gleichsam experimentell an den Theoriegebäuden vergangener Zeiten überprüft, durchdacht und intellektuell bearbeitet werden können. Eine so verstandene politische Ideengeschichte ist gegenwartsbezogen, auch wenn sie sich den aktuellen politischen Problemen nur mittelbar zuzuwenden scheint. Platons Werk legt im Netz der verschiedenen Dialoge Fragen frei, die fur die europaische Philosophie bis heute massgeblichen Charakter haben: die Unterscheidung von Wissen und Meinung, das Problem einer situationsinvarianten Wahrheit und die Verknupfung von Idee und erscheinender Wirklichkeit. Nicht zuletzt begrundete Platon die Dialektik als Grundverfahren der Trennung und Beziehung von Begriffen. Diese Denkbewegung steht in vielfachen komplexen Lebenszusammenhangen: der Typik des Philosophen als des gerechtesten Mannes in der Stadt mit dem Lebensbeispiel des Sokrates, der Auseinandersetzung mit der Sophistik, (...) mit Mythologie und Kunst. Den Tauschungen versucht Platon eine wahre Rhetorik und Politik entgegenzusetzen. Ist sie, mit Karl Popper, tendenziell "totalitar" oder lasst sie sich als freie Sorge um die Seele neu zur Geltung bringen? Die Monographie ist als Gesamtdarstellung platonischer Philosophie angelegt. Im Einzelnen spannt sie den Bogen von den fruhen aporetischen Sokratesdialogen bis zu den dialektischen Spatdialogen, der Kosmogonie des 'Timaios' und der Naturphilosophie des 'Philebos'. Sie ist gleichermassen als grundlegende Ubersicht wie auch als differenzierte Explikation von Kernproblemen platonischen Denkens in seinen Kontexten zu lesen. Sie geht dabei von dem Diktum Schleiermachers aus, dass das Exoterische der Dialoge das Esoterische einer Tiefengrammatik Platons erschliesst. In diesem Licht werden auch die Uberlegungen zu "Platons ungeschriebener Lehre" aufgenommen. (shrink)

In the history of science, the alterations of laboratorial working conditions during a defined period of time and the processes leading to substitution of one instrument by another are not well reconstructed. With respect to electrophysiology between 1845 and 1910, the present article attempts to call attention to the relationship between the use of instruments in a laboratory, the change in these instruments and the change of local environments in which the laboratory was situated.

Die philosophische Selbstergründung läuft als roter Faden durch das Gesamtwerk Wiebke Schraders. Aus der anthropologischen Auflösung der Gottesfrage folgte nicht die erwartete Aufwertung, sondern die Entwertung des Individuums mit katastrophalen politischen Konsequenzen. Gott als Problem ist systematisch nicht von der Selbstergründung der Vernunft, dem Fundament der Menschenwürde, zu trennen. Beide Problemkomplexe arbeitete W. Schrader in spekulativer Absicht denkgeschichtlich heraus. So erstreckt sich die Spannweite ihrer Studien u.a. von der Ideologiediskussion bei Mannheim, Marx und Comte über Kants Vernunftkritik, der Welt- und (...)
