    A SUMO and ubiquitin code coordinates protein traffic at replication factories.Emilio Lecona & Oscar Fernandez-Capetillo - 2016 - Bioessays 38 (12):1209-1217.
Post‐translational modifications regulate each step of DNA replication to ensure the faithful transmission of genetic information. In this context, we recently showed that deubiquitination of SUMO2/3 and SUMOylated proteins by USP7 helps to create a SUMO‐rich and ubiquitin‐low environment around replisomes that is necessary to maintain the activity of replication forks and for new origin firing. We propose that a two‐flag system mediates the collective concentration of factors at sites of DNA replication, whereby SUMO and Ubiquitinated‐SUMO would constitute “stay” or (...)

Contract and confederation: notes on the role of international relations in Jean-Jacques Rousseau's political thought.José Oscar de Almeida Marques - 2010 - Trans/Form/Ação 33 (1):19-30.
When we read Rousseau's Social Contract, we tend to focus on its explicit goal, which is to investigate and establish a safe and legitimate rule of administration for a single political community. In accordance with the abstract character of the work, we tend to see this community as something pre-existing and isolated, without asking what those individuals who decide to submit to the rule of his general will had initially in common, and how the political body thus formed is related (...)

  5. Can Hinge Epistemology Close the Door on Epistemic Relativism?Oscar A. Piedrahita - 2021 - Synthese (1-2):1-27.
I argue that a standard formulation of hinge epistemology is host to epistemic relativism and show that two leading hinge approaches (Coliva’s acceptance account and Pritchard’s nondoxastic account) are vulnerable to a form of incommensurability that leads to relativism. Building on both accounts, I introduce a new, minimally epistemic conception of hinges that avoids epistemic relativism and rationally resolves hinge disagreements. According to my proposed account, putative cases of epistemic incommensurability are rationally resolvable: hinges are propositions that are the objects (...)

  6. Lucky Ignorance, Modality and Lack of Knowledge.Oscar A. Piedrahita - 2021 - Pacific Philosophical Quarterly (3).
I argue against the Standard View of ignorance, according to which ignorance is defined as equivalent to lack of knowledge, that cases of environmental epistemic luck, though entailing lack of knowledge, do not necessarily entail ignorance. In support of my argument, I contend that in cases of environmental luck an agent retains what I call epistemic access to the relevant fact by successfully exercising her epistemic agency and that ignorance and non-ignorance, contrary to what the Standard View predicts, are not (...)

Membership, Neighborhood Social Identification, Well-Being, and Health for the Elderly in Chile.Emilio Moyano-Díaz & Rodolfo Mendoza-Llanos - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 11.
The world’s elderly population is growing, and in Chile they represent 16.2% of the total population. In Chile, old age is marked by retirement, with a dramatic decrease in income that brings precariousness. Older adults are economically, socially, and psychologically vulnerable populations. This condition increases their likelihood of disengaging from their usual social environment, facilitating their isolation, sadness, and discomfort. From the perspective of social identity, well-being can be explained by two principles: social groups’ importance for health and people’s psychological (...)

An Article “Somewhat Abusive”: William Warburton and the First Review of Hume’s Treatise.Angela Coventry, Emilio Mazza & Gianluca Mori - 2024 - Hume Studies 49 (2):279-314.
In this paper, we examine the authorship of the first review of Hume’s _Treatise of Human Nature_ (1739–40), published anonymously in the _History of the Works of the Learned_ in late 1739. We believe that William Warburton is the author of the review, as attested by various clues, partly dependent on the testimony of the editor of the _History of the Works of the Learned_, Jacob Robinson. Robinson states in 1742 that the author of Hume’s review is the same as (...)

Four Epistemological Gaps in Alloanimal Episodic Memory Studies.Oscar S. Miyamoto Gómez - forthcoming - Biosemiotics:1-19.
Experimental studies show that some corvids, apes, and rodents possess a common long-term memory system that allows them to take goal-directed actions on the basis of absent spatiotemporal contexts. In other words, evidence supports the hypothesis that Episodic Memory —far from being uniquely human— has evolved as a cross-species meaning making system. However, within this zoosemiotic breakthrough, neurocognitive studies now struggle characterizing the relations between teleological factors and phenomenological factors that would account for the episodic behavior displayed by these living (...)

The relation between the general maxim of causality and the principle of uniformity in Hume's theory of knowledge.José Oscar de Almeida Marques - 2012 - Manuscrito 35 (1):85-98.
ABSTRACT When Hume, in the Treatise on Human Nature, began his examination of the relation of cause and effect, in particular, of the idea of necessary connection which is its essential constituent, he identified two preliminary questions that should guide his research: For what reason we pronounce it necessary that every thing whose existence has a beginning should also have a cause and Why we conclude that such particular causes must necessarily have such particular effects? Hume observes that our belief (...)

Motion as a Concept, an Insufficient Element in the Kantian Philosophy.Diego Emilio Salazar Gómez & Francisco Luis Giraldo Gutiérrez - 2022 - Axiomathes 32 (1):63-82.
This article examines the Kantian ideas on motion in his work Metaphysical Foundations of Natural Science. In that essay, Kant holds that motion as a concept—from its connotation as elemental and fundamental predicament of the material reality—mobilises in matter all the characteristics of its essence as a property. Nevertheless conceiving motion as a concept does not enable us to confirm the existence of motion itself in the natural world because ‘the possibility of specific natural things can’t be discovered from their (...)

Infinitos y filosofía natural en Leibniz.Oscar M. Esquisabel & Federico Raffo Quintana - 2020 - Anales Del Seminario de Historia de la Filosofía 37 (3):425-435.
In this paper, we will consider the theoretical aspects of Leibniz’s thought on infinitely small and infinite quantities in the context of the natural philosophy developed by him in the Parisian period. We will hold that in the texts of this period an attempt of problematizing concepts of infinitary mathematics is found, which is not in the strictly mathematical texts. In this perspective, we also propose that there is in Leibniz a “double methodological record” concerning the question of the infinity (...)

    Technocracy, Governmentality, and Post-Structuralism.Oscar L. Larsson - 2020 - Critical Review: A Journal of Politics and Society 32 (1-3):103-123.
ABSTRACT The technocratic dimension of government—its reliance upon knowledge claims, usually in scientific guise—is of great importance if we wish to understand modern power and governance. In Power Without Knowledge: A Critique of Technocracy, Jeffrey Friedman investigates the often-overlooked question of the relationship between technocratic knowledge/power and ideas. Friedman’s contribution to our understanding of technocracy can therefore be read as a contribution to governmentality studies, one that introduces the possibility of adding normative solutions to this critical tradition.

A flexible logic-based approach to closeness using order of magnitude qualitative reasoning.Alfredo Burrieza, Emilio MuÑoz-Velasco & Manuel Ojeda-Aciego - forthcoming - Logic Journal of the IGPL.
In this paper, we focus on a logical approach to the important notion of closeness, which has not received much attention in the literature. Our notion of closeness is based on the so-called proximity intervals, which will be used to decide the elements that are close to each other. Some of the intuitions of this definition are explained on the basis of examples. We prove the decidability of the recently introduced multimodal logic for closeness and, then, we show some capabilities (...)

Fear to contamination is an easy-to-provoke, intense, hard-to-control, and extraordinarily persistent fear. A worsening of preexisting psychiatric disorders was observed during the COVID-19 outbreak, and several studies suggest that those with obsessive–compulsive disorder may be more affected than any other group of people. In the face of worsening OCD symptoms, there is a need for mental health professionals to provide the support needed not only to treat patients who still report symptoms, but also to improve relapse prevention. In this line, (...)

Avoiding unproductive proclamations, this volume unites new materialist critical thinking with a commitment to fundamental principles.

Althusser, the Infinite Farewell.Emilio De Ipola - 2018 - Durham: Duke University Press. Edited by Gavin Arnall & Étienne Balibar.
In _Althusser, The Infinite Farewell_—originally published in Spanish and appearing here in English for the first time—Emilio de Ípola contends that Althusser’s oeuvre is divided between two fundamentally different and at times contradictory projects. The first is the familiar Althusser, that of _For Marx_ and _Reading Capital_. Symptomatically reading these canonical texts alongside Althusser’s lesser-known writings, de Ípola reveals a second, subterranean current of thought that flows throughout Althusser’s classic formulations and which only gains explicit expression in his later (...)

The present work aims to study the knot formed between ontology, normativity and subjetivation in order to tackle the problem of materiality of domination relations. Along these lines, a materialist aproach will explore the movements, relationships and multiple implications among these dimensions. This method seeks to dismantle the tendency of philosophical idealism that appeals to the suture, blocking and closure of the plurality of events through some normative principle of a, let´s say, a priori trascendental or empirical character. As a (...)
