The present paper argues for a more complete integration between recent “genealogical” approaches to the problem of knowledge and evolutionary accounts of the development of human cognitive capacities and practices. A structural tension is pointed out between, on the one hand, the fact that theexplicandumof genealogical stories is a specifically human trait and, on the other hand, the tacit acknowledgment, shared by all contributors to the debate, that human beings have evolved from non-human beings. Since humans differ from their predecessors (...)

Axel Pichler & Marcus Andreas Born (eds.) - 2013 - Germany: De Gruyter.
Nietzsche s writings cannot be truly understood without examining their specific representational forms and complex textual stagings. In this volume, an international group of scholars consider how form and content are interrelated in Nietzsche s Beyond Good and Evil. The volume includes important new essays on stylistics, rhetoric, history of philosophy, and history of editions.".

  19. Climate Scepticism, Epistemic Dissonance, and the Ethics of Uncertainty.Axel Gelfert - 2013 - Philosophy and Public Issues - Filosofia E Questioni Pubbliche 3 (1):167-208.
When it comes to the public debate about the challenge of global climate change, moral questions are inextricably intertwined with epistemological ones. This manifests itself in at least two distinct ways. First, for a fixed set of epistemic standards, it may be irresponsible to delay policy-making until everyone agrees that such standards have been met. This has been extensively discussed in the literature on the precautionary principle. Second, key actors in the public debate may – for strategic reasons, or out (...)

  22. Introduction.Axel Gosseries - 2011 - Ethical Perspectives 18 (3):309-311.
Competition – more specifically economic competition – is relevant to ethical reflection in different ways. Some of its features exacerbate the intensity of moral problems we may otherwise come across in a context of scarcity. For instance, when competition is especially tough – think about winner-takes-all cases – one agent is likely to lose significantly if he or she acts ethically, to the benefit of others who act in ways that seem ethically questionable. Whenever ‘ethics does not pay’ and competition (...)

The present paper focuses on a particular class of models intended to describe and explain the physical behaviour of systems that consist of a large number of interacting particles. Such many-body models are characterized by a specific Hamiltonian (energy operator) and are frequently employed in condensed matter physics in order to account for such phenomena as magnetism, superconductivity, and other phase transitions. Because of the dual role of many-body models as models of physical sys-tems (with specific physical phenomena as their (...)

  27. Capitalismo e riconoscimento (pdf: introduzione, prefazione, capitolo I).Axel Honneth & Marco Solinas - 2010 - Firenze University Press.

Axel Hutter - 2006 - Bochumer Philosophisches Jahrbuch Fur Antike Und Mittelalter 11 (1):3-24.
A specifically rational understanding of the philosophical tradition, which addresses the question of truth, is opposed to a purely historical understanding of philosophy. Nevertheless this rational understanding of philosophy remains critically related to history: It frees the philosophy of the past from solidification into an antiquity, while it integrates earlier thought into an autonomous re-thinking, and it frees the thinking of the present from its prejudices, while it confronts its comfortable ways of understanding with the unsatisfied truth of the tradition.

The Puzzle of Ineffective Election Campaigning in Japan.Axel Klein - 2011 - Japanese Journal of Political Science 12 (1):57-74.
In Japan, electoral campaigning in plurality districts often appears strangely ineffective to observers. In their explanations, political scientists have so far fallen back on the proximate cause, namely the strict Public Office Election Law (K), claiming that it is this law that prohibits different and more effective campaigning. This study, however, is based on the assumption that such an explanation could be insufficient since even those campaign tactics legally allowed are often executed and/or selected in an apparently ineffective way in (...)
