    The Asymmetry of Causality: A Realist Solution.Bernard McBreen - 2017 - Philosophical Investigations 41 (1):3-21.
How do we distinguish between cause and effect? The main argument of this paper is that if a realist account of the meaning of causal statements is adopted, then two clear distinctions between cause and effect emerge. By realist account is meant conceiving a cause as something with a power to act. Since a realist approach to causality is not widely accepted among philosophers, two arguments against a realist approach to causality are countered. The asymmetry of causality is defended against (...)

    Realism and empiricism in Hume's account of causality.Bernard McBreen - 2007 - Philosophy 82 (3):421-436.
Hume's empirical approach seems to drain the concept of causality of all content, so that causality in objects is reduced to constant conjunction. His use of language of causality, which is necessarily realist, is undermined by his account of causality, which is not realist. The realist intepretation of Hume, by philosophers such as Galen Strawson, is rejected because it is incompatible with empiricism. However, if Hume's view that we do not have any sensory experience of causing is challenged, then the (...)

  10. Self‐Knowledge, Responsibility, and the Third Person.Bernard Reginster - 2004 - Philosophy and Phenomenological Research 69 (2):433-436.
Richard Moran's Authority and Estrangement offers a subtle and tantalizing exploration of asymmetries that arise between first‐person and third‐person self‐knowledge. According to Moran's central claim, the distinction of first‐person self‐knowledge is to engage the responsibility of the person. I will focus my remarks on this issue. I wish to raise some questions about the nature of the third‐person perspective, and about how assuming it affects the responsibility of the person. In this connection, I examine in some detail Moran's main examples (...)

    Foucault’s Keystone: Confessions of the Flesh.Bernard E. Harcourt - 2021 - Foucault Studies 29:48-70.
The fourth and final volume of The History of Sexuality offers the keystone to Michel Foucault’s critique of Western neoliberal societies. Confessions of the Flesh provides the heretofore missing link that ties Foucault’s late writings on subjectivity to his earlier critique of power. Foucault identifies in Augustine’s treatment of marital sexual relations the moment of birth of the modern legal actor and of the legalization of social relations. With the appearance of the modern legal subject, Foucault’s critique of modern Western (...)

Paul Ricoeur: The Promise and Risk of Politics.Bernard P. Dauenhauer - 1998 - Rowman & Littlefield Publishers.
Paul Ricœur, with Rawls, Walzer, and Habermas as some of his main interlocuters, has developed a substantial and distinctive body of political thought. On the one hand, it articulates a rich conception of the paradoxical character of the domain of politics. On the other, it provides a fresh approach to such major topics as the relationship among politics, economics, and ethics and between concern for universal human rights and respect for cultural plurality. His work, rooted as it is in Aristotle, (...)

Lefort.Bernard Flynn - 1998 - In Simon Critchley & William Ralph Schroeder (eds.), A Companion to Continental Philosophy. Malden, Mass.: Wiley-Blackwell. pp. 484–491.
This essay will present an outline of the concept of the empty place which plays a central role in the political philosophy of Claude Lefort. The notion of the place of the political in contemporary political theory might serve as a point of demarcation by which one can indicate Lefort's relation to, and his distance from, various strands of modern political discourse. I shall begin by evoking two “ideal types,” and referring to actual theories only insofar as they illustrate these (...)

To speak of patients' choices is to obscure the distinction between request and refusal of treatment. The distinction is particularly crucial for questions of killing or letting die.
