This study investigates how filler-gap dependencies associated with subject position are formed in online sentence comprehension. Since Crain and Fodor, “filled-gap” studies have provided evidence that the parser actively seeks to associate a wh-filler with a gap in direct object position of a sentence wherever possible; the evidence that this same process applies for subject position, is, however, more limited. We examine the processing of complement clauses, finding that wh dependency formation is actively attempted at embedded subject position, unless, however, (...) the embedded clause contains a complementizer. The absence of the dependency formation in the latter case demonstrates that the complementizer-trace effect is, like syntactic island constraints, immediately operative in online structure building. With its recognition of the combined effects of the social categories of race, class and gender intersectionality has risen to the rank of feminism’s most important contribution to date. Though the first intersectional research (American and British) gave visibility to the social locus of women who self-identified as "black" or "of colour", current research goes beyond the confines of the English-speaking world and aims increasingly to develop an intersectional instrument to deal with discrimination. This project gives rise to two kinds (...) of debate: one related to producing intersectional information and to ways of carrying out research in this area, the other to do with the use of this information in the political struggle for equality. The current paper, which is confined to the first debate, attempts to bring out the main tension points in present theorizations of intersectionality. Its objective is twofold: to demonstrate certain limits to the explanatory power of intersectionality, and to suggest ways forward in the light of discussions already in train. In order to do so four points are tackled: intersectionality as a research paradigm, the issue of levels of analysis, the theoretical difference of opinion on the ontological status of categories of difference and the issue of widening the theoretical scope of intersectionality. Much research on color representation and categorization has assumed that relations among color terms can be proxies for relations among color percepts. We test this assumption by comparing the mapping of color words with color appearances among different observer groups performing cognitive tasks: an invariance of naming task; and triad similarity judgments of color term and color appearance stimuli within and across color categories. Observer subgroups were defined by perceptual phenotype and photopigment opsin genotype analyses. Results suggest that individuals rely (...) on at least two different representational models of color experience: one lexical, conforming to the culture's normative linguistic representation, and another individual perceptual representation organizing each observer's color sensation experiences. Additional observer subgroup analyses suggest that perceptual phenotype variation within a language group may play a greater role in the shared color naming system than previously thought. A reexamination of color naming data in view of these findings may reveal influences on color naming important to current theories. (shrink)

This essay engages with several themes from Michel Foucault’s texts in order to examine the intricate connection between the normalizing power of medical discourse and its implicit ontological and epistemological commitments. I argue that medical discourse is inherently a medico-ethical discourse and its normalizing power is sustained through its being situated within a discourse on truth that allegedly establishes medical discourse as objective and scientific. In this context, in order to account for the non-coercive normalizing power of the medical sciences, (...) I claim that medical sciences can authorize themselves as objective only on the basis of a metabody, rather than real bodies. Through an appeal to the metabody, normal and abnormal are instituted as objective evaluations, and medical scientific discourse renders ethical normativity and epistemological normativity virtually indistinguishable. The objective of my comments is to draw attention to the complex relationship between the juridico-political model of sovereignty and disciplinary power in Foucault's work. I suggest that Elden's reading of Foucault and Shakespeare opens up new ways to understand contemporary forms of governmentality through a genealogy of political ceremony and theatricality. More specifically, my comments seek to show that an examination of the ceremoniality of coup d'État in connection with what Foucault calls the “democratization of sovereignty” is potentially fruitful (...) for examining modern forms of the government of civil society and counter-conduct. Some recent studies in computational linguistics have aimed to take advantage of various cues presented by punctuation marks. This short survey is intended to summarise these research efforts and additionally, to outline a current perspective for the usage and functions of punctuation marks. We conclude by presenting an information-based framework for punctuation, influenced by treatments of several related phenomena in computational linguistics.

Punctuation has so far attracted attention within the linguistics community mostly from a syntactic perspective. In this paper, we give a preliminary account of the information-based aspects of punctuation, drawing our points from assorted, naturally occurring sentences. We present our formal models of these sentences and the semantic contributions of punctuation marks. Our formalism is a simplified analogue of an extension --- due to Nicholas Asher --- of Discourse Representation Theory.

One of the most important topics in current work on consciousness is what relationship it has to attention. Recently, one of the focuses of this debate has been on the phenomenon of identity crowding. Ned Block has claimed that identity crowding involves conscious perception of an object that we are unable to pay attention to. In this article, we draw upon a range of empirical findings to argue against Block's interpretation of the data. We take em-dash as our sample punctuation mark and examine its usage from a discourse perspective, using sentences from well-known corpora. We particularly comment on how dashes can give hints on information structure, focus, and anaphora. Throughout the paper Discourse Representation Theory is used as a framework.

This dissertation engages critically with the metaphysical implications of the respective transcendentalisms of Husserl, Deleuze, and Kant in an attempt to disclose their largely untapped resources for a renewed consideration of the ability of science to grasp reality as it is in-itself. Chapter 1 examines the metaphysical implications of Husserl’s critique of natural scientific objectivity in his later transcendental philosophy in connection to his early formulations of phenomenological objectivity around the axis of the distinction between metaphysics as the science of (...) real Being and formal ontology as the science of Being in the most universal sense. I argue that Husserl’s phenomenological metaphysics constitutes a framework in which the ideal Being of the transcendental dimension of experience operates as the condition for the possibility of natural scientific objectivity. Chapter 2 scrutinizes Deleuze’s characterization of intensity as a transcendental concept rather than a scientific one against the background of his metaphysics of difference and his critique of the shortcomings of Kant’s transcendental idealism for addressing the transcendental conditions for the genesis of real experience. Through a reading of Deleuze’s metaphysics of difference and intensity in connection to his confinement of the creative productivity of scientific thought to a plane of reference, I argue that the creativity apropos to the scientific engagement with material reality necessitates that such creativity is conditioned by the same transcendental considerations operative in a metaphysics of difference at a broad scale. Against the backdrop of Husserl’s and Deleuze’s respective criticisms of the inadequacy of Kant’s transcendental idealism for articulating the material component of experience, Chapter 3 studies Kant’s later iv conception of ether as the simultaneously empirical and transcendental condition for the possibility and unity of experience. Through an examination of Kant’s renewed understanding of materiality as the necessary and sufficient condition for scientific objectivity in connection with the problematic objectivity of the transcendental ideas created by pure reason in Kant’s Critical philosophy, I suggest that Kant’s later articulation of materiality on transcendental grounds simultaneously addresses the objectivity and the creativity pertinent to the encounter of scientific Thought with material/physical reality. Some have claimed that identity crowding is a case where we consciously see an object to which we are unable to pay attention. Opponents of this view offer alternative explanations, which emphasise the importance of prior knowledge, amongst other factors. We review new empirical evidence showing that prior knowledge has a profound effect on identity crowding. We argue that this is problematic for the “conscious seeing without attention” view, and supports an opposing view.

In this paper we provide the first comprehensive insight into corporate community involvement activities of companies in Turkey. Drawing upon an extensive database compiled from corporate websites and archive documents in addition to a primary survey of 77 of Turkey’s largest companies, we examine the pattern of corporate community activities in Turkey and juxtapose these against existing evidence for other countries and distinctive elements of Turkey’s institutional environment. Our analysis highlights the historical role played by leading philanthropists in stimulating corporate (...) community involvement activities in Turkey and shows that overall giving is very heavily concentrated among the largest givers. We also highlight the concentration of giving among consumer good producers, suggesting a clear strategic rationale for the majority of CCI activity in Turkey, the very low levels of giving by foreign owned and controlled companies, and the strong orientation of CCI in Turkey to projects concerned with education, healthcare and the arts. Prior research has tended to focus on the influences upon how much organizations contribute to charitable or community cases paying relatively little attentionto the recipients of these donations or how firms develop preferences in respect of them. This study, in order to fill these gaps in the literature, focuses on two main aspects of CCI within 500 biggest companies situated in Turkey. Firstly, it aims to explore how companies manage their CCI activities. The type and level of the managers who (...) are the decision makers and the departments from which CCI decisions are taken will be examined. This helps to understand the potential objectives and strategic importance of giving. Also it shows whether a firm has a stable orientation to CCI, or a more ad hoc orientation. Secondly, it aims to analyze the preferences of companies in respect of the area of priorities and exclusions. We argue that institutional environments can shape the CCI activities. Exploring the local conditions of the countries can give reasons for investment in specific areas. (shrink)

Prior research that analyses the cross-firm variation in the prevalence of women on corporate boards has tended to emphasise the importance of firm and industry-level factors, such as firm size, the quality of corporate governance, and the proximity to final consumers. In contrast, very little research has explored the role of national institutional factors for this important phenomenon. In this study, we explore the relative importance of country, industry, and firm-level factors in explaining the cross-firm variation in the proportion of (...) directorships occupied by female directors. Findings indicate that while all levels of influence are significant, country-level effects are a highly-important and under-researched antecedent of the presence of women on corporate boards. Alexithymia is characterised by difficulties in identifying, recognising, and describing emotions. We studied alexithymia in the context of speech comprehension, specifically investigating the incongruent condition between prosody and the literal meaning of words in emotion-based discourse. In two experiments, participants were categorised as having high or low alexithymia scores based on the TAS-20 scale and listened to three-sentence narratives where the emotional prosody of a key phrase or a keyword was congruent or incongruent with its literal meaning. The incongruent condition (...) resulted in slower reaction times and lower accuracy in recognition of emotions. This incongruence effect was also evident for individuals with high alexithymia, except for anger. They recognised anger as accurately in both congruent and incongruent conditions. Contrary to our hypothesis, however, individuals with high alexithymia did not show an overall difference in emotion recognition compared to the low alexithymia group. These findings highlight the nuanced relationship between emotional prosody and literal meaning, offering insights into how individuals with varying levels of alexithymia process emotional discourse. Understanding these dynamics has implications for both cognitive research and clinical practice, providing valuable perspectives on speech comprehension, especially in situations involving incongruence between prosody and word meaning. This paper involves a critical evaluation of a conceptualization of guilt and shame, which guides a number of research mainly in social psychology. In the contemporary literature, conceptualization of guilt and shame shows variation. In one of the leading approaches, guilt is regarded as an experience that targets behavior in evaluative thought and shame as targeting the self. According to this distinction, guilt has a constructive nature and it motivates the individual to take reparative actions, since it targets the behavior, (...) whereas shame has a destructive quality and is linked with problem behaviors, since it targets the self. The claim that guilt and shame are adaptive and maladaptive feelings respectively by their very nature, has been challenged by theory and research. Researchers from non-Western cultures also criticized compartmentalization of guilt and shame as constructive and destructive emotions by emphasizing cultural variation in the experience of self-conscious emotions. In this regard, the present paper argues that features of constructiveness and destructiveness do not necessarily follow from the definitions of guilt and shame and that this dichotomous conceptualization of guilt and shame, and the research findings based on this dichotomy need reconsideration. In everyday interactions, humans naturally exhibit behavioral cues, such as gaze and head movements, that signal their intentions while interpreting the behavioral cues of others to predict their intentions. Such intention prediction enables each partner to adapt their behaviors to the intent of others, serving a critical role in joint action where parties work together to achieve a common goal. Among behavioral cues, eye gaze is particularly important in understanding a person's attention and intention. In this work, we seek to (...) quantify how gaze patterns may indicate a person's intention. Our investigation was contextualized in a dyadic sandwich-making scenario in which a “worker” prepared a sandwich by adding ingredients requested by a “customer.” In this context, we investigated the extent to which the customers' gaze cues serve as predictors of which ingredients they intend to request. Predictive features were derived to represent characteristics of the customers' gaze patterns. We developed a support vector machine-based (SVM-based) model that achieved 76% accuracy in predicting the customers' intended requests based solely on gaze features. Moreover, the predictor made correct predictions approximately 1.8 s before the spoken request from the customer. We further analyzed several episodes of interactions from our data to develop a deeper understanding of the scenarios where our predictor succeeded and failed in making correct predictions. These analyses revealed additional gaze patterns that may be leveraged to improve intention prediction. This work highlights gaze cues as a significant resource for understanding human intentions and informs the design of real-time recognizers of user intention for intelligent systems, such as assistive robots and ubiquitous devices, that may enable more complex capabilities and improved user experience. When conversing and collaborating in everyday situations, people naturally and interactively align their behaviors with each other across various communication channels, including speech, gesture, posture, and gaze. Having access to a partner's referential gaze behavior has been shown to be particularly important in achieving collaborative outcomes, but the process in which people's gaze behaviors unfold over the course of an interaction and become tightly coordinated is not well understood. In this paper, we present work to develop a deeper and more (...) nuanced understanding of coordinated referential gaze in collaborating dyads. We recruited 13 dyads to participate in a collaborative sandwich-making task and used dual mobile eye tracking to synchronously record each participant's gaze behavior. We used a relatively new analysis technique—epistemic network analysis—to jointly model the gaze behaviors of both conversational participants. In this analysis, network nodes represent gaze targets for each participant, and edge strengths convey the likelihood of simultaneous gaze to the connected target nodes during a given time-slice. We divided collaborative task sequences into discrete phases to examine how the networks of shared gaze evolved over longer time windows. We conducted three separate analyses of the data to reveal (1) properties and patterns of how gaze coordination unfolds throughout an interaction sequence, (2) optimal time lags of gaze alignment within a dyad at different phases of the interaction, and (3) differences in gaze coordination patterns for interaction sequences that lead to breakdowns and repairs. In addition to contributing to the growing body of knowledge on the coordination of gaze behaviors in joint activities, this work has implications for the design of future technologies that engage in situated interactions with human users. People routinely use facial expressions to communicate successfully and to regulate other’s behaviour, yet modelling the form and meaning of these facial behaviours has proven surprisingly complex. One reason for this difficulty may lie in an over-reliance on the assumptions inherent in existing theories of facial expression – specifically that (1) there is a putative set of facial expressions that signal an internal state of emotion, (2) patterns of facial movement have been empirically linked to the prototypical emotions in this (...) set, and (3) static, non-social, posed images from convenience samples are adequate to validate the first two assumptions. These assumptions have guided the creation of datasets, which are then used to train unrepresentative computational models of facial expression. In this article, we discuss existing theories of facial expression and review how they have shaped current facial expression recognition tools. We then discuss the resources that are available to help researchers build a more ecologically valid model of facial expressions. (shrink)

Çalışmamızda Platon’un felsefesinde önemli yer tutan bilge ve filozof kavramlarını ele alacağız. Bu iki kavramı birbiriyle irtibatı açısından değerlendirerek, Platon’un felsefe tanımına ulaşacağız. Fikriyat tarihinde Platon’un felsefesini ve bu itibarla da bilge ve filozof kavramlarını Fârâbî’nin nasıl ele aldığını sorunsallaştıracağız. Bu bağlamda Fârâbî’nin Platon okumasının ne kadar isabetli olduğunu sorgulayarak onun nübüvvet kuramının bilge ve filozof arasındaki irtibatın mahiyetini yakalayıp yakalayamadığına cevap arayacağız. Daha sonra Platon’un filozof kavramıyla ilahi kelamın mübelliği olan nebi arasında ne gibi farklılıkların olduğu (...) üzerinde durarak akademik dünyamızda neredeyse yer edinmiş filozof ve nebi benzerliğinin yanlış olduğunu göstereceğiz. Bu yanlışın nereden kaynaklandığını irdeleyerek nebinin filozofla değil bilgeyle benzerliğinin kurulabileceğine vurgu yapacağız. Ancak bu benzerliğin aynılık olup olmadığına, asıl tekilliğin ve asıl hadisenin bilgeyle mi yoksa nebiyle mi alakalı olduğu sorusuna verilecek cevap üzerinden ulaşacağız. Yani Platon’un bilgeye verdiği merkeziliği Fârâbî’nin nebiye verdiğini ileri sürmek mümkün müdür? Fârâbî’nin felsefesinde nebi, siyaset sahnesini kuran ve bu anlamda toplumsallaşmayı sağlayan bir figür olmakla birlikte ontolojisini nebiyi merkeze alarak mı inşa etmiş? Platon’un sadece ontolojisini değil bütün bir metafizik sistemini bilgeyi merkeze alarak geliştirdiğini dikkate alırsak, nebiyi esas alarak yeni bir metafizik sistemin geliştirilmesi Fârâbî’nin felsefesinin de içerilerek aşılması anlamına mı gelir? İşbu soruları yanıtlamaya çalışacak olan çalışmamızın akademiye katkı sağlayacağı kanaatindeyiz. (shrink)

Bu çalışmada modern bireyin kendini var etme çabası bağlamında çağ getirisi olarak karşılaştığı problemler, zorunluluklar ve değer yargıları ele alınmıştır. Türkiye özelinde bireyin kendisiyle çatışması, aidiyeti, yaşam biçimi, ahlâkî problemleri ve modern dönemde oluşan dikotomilerden olan kent-taşra ve gelenek-modernite ilişkisi incelenmiştir. Aşırı bireycilik, modernite ile birlikte geleneksel değerlerin önemsizleşmesi ve tüketim odaklı anlık yaşam tarzına geçilmesinin neticesinde oluşan ait olma hissinin kaybı, vicdan ve ahlâk kavramlarının bireylerdeki karşılığı ile birlikte işlenmiştir. Bu çerçevede ahlâk meselesi odak noktayı teşkil etmektedir. Modern iletişim (...) çağında sinema, yaşamın gerçeklerini yansıtma konusunda önemli bir araç haline gelmiştir. Film odaklı sosyal hayat incelemeleri bu doğrultuda önemlidir. Makalede Türkiye’de temelde yaşanan değişim ve dönüşümlerin bireydeki etkileri, modern çağda sosyal hayat, eğitim, din, meslek ve aile mevzuları, Ahlat Ağacı filmi üzerinden irdelenmiştir. Film senaryosu, senaristlerinden biri ve Nuri Bilge Ceylan’ın amcasının oğlu olan Akın Aksu’nun hikayesi üzerine yazılmıştır. Nuri Bilge Ceylan, filmlerinde insan doğasını ve toplumsal sorunları derinlemesine işlemektedir. Gerçekliği filmlerinde doğrudan, birçok yön ve detayıyla göstermeye çalışmaktadır. Ceylan’ın filmleri üst-kurguya sahip eleştirel filmlerdir. Ahlat Ağacı da tüketim toplumunu, kapitalist yaşam biçimini ve bireydeki yansımalarını ince bir alay ve ironi ile sergilediği uzun soluklu yapıtlarındandır. Film, Sinan’ın kendini arama serüveninde karşılaştığı karakterler ile kurduğu ilişkiler doğrultusunda analiz edilmiştir. Nuri Bilge Ceylan’ın filmde yalnızca modernitenin izlerine değil, post-modernitenin sorunlarına da cesurca değindiği ve eleştirilerini de diyaloglarla apaçık şekilde sunduğu görülmüştür. Yapıt, post-modern dönemde çekilmiş ve Türkiye’nin toplumsal sorunlarıyla birlikte çağa ait problemlere de değinmiştir. Bireylerin moderniteyle birlikte kendilik süreçlerinde bağsız, süreksiz ve parçalı yaşam biçimine sürüklenmesi kimlik bunalımlarına sebep olmuştur. Bu durum kişisel olmakla birlikte toplumsal hafızaya müdahaleyi de ifade etmektedir. Taşradan kente geçişte izleri zamanla bulanıklaşsa da gelenek ve modernite ikiliği göze çarpmaktadır. Çalışmada bu bireysel değişimle birlikte aile ve toplumda gerçekleşen değişiklikler de incelenmiştir. Modernite ile artan hızlı yaşam zorunluluğu ve güncelden geri kalmanın oluşturduğu bunalımlar ele alınmıştır. Bireyin davranışlarında kararsız, sıkışmış ve yalnız hissetmesi son yüzyılda belirginleşmiştir. Bu bağlamda Ahlat Ağacı’nda başkarakter Sinan’ın yalnızlığı, taşra ve kent, hayalleri ve hayat şartları arasında sıkışmışlığı da taşradan kaçmasıyla başlamış ve taşrada kendini bulmasıyla sonuçlanmıştır. Kendi gerçekliğinden kaçarak tekrar taşraya babasının kaldığı yere dönen Sinan karakterinde değişim içinde süreklilik perspektifi görülmektedir. (shrink)

Genel anlamıyla, ilâhîlik makamının insanoğluyla iletişimi olarak da ifade edilebilecek olan vahiy kavramının değişik din, kültür ve hatta düşünürlerdeki yankısı farklı olmuştur. Bu farklılık, entelektüel dünyaya sıradanlığın ötesinde izler bırakacak türdendir. Zira bazı kavramlar vardır ki, onlara yüklenen manalar algıları yönlendirir ve anlamayı büsbütün şekillendirir. Vahiy de bunlardan birisi olup özellikle dinlerin, kendi hakikatleri çerçevesinde doğru algılanabilmelerinde anahtar bir kavramdır. Bu makalede, kaynağı yönüyle Hindu kutsal metinleri Vedalara yüklenen anlamlardan hareketle Hinduizm’deki vahiy algısı ve ıstılahî anlamından hareketle Kur’ân vahyi konu (...) edilecektir. Mevcut literatürde daha çok Hinduizm’de vahy diye ifade edilen şeyin nasıllığı üzerinde durulmakta ama bu kavramın ıstılâhî menşei olan İslam dinindeki kullanımı açısından ayrıntılı bir mahiyet karşılaştırmasına rastlanmamaktadır. Mecazî anlamına vurgu yapılmadan Hindu kutsal metinleri Vedalar için kullanılan Tanrı’nın vahyi ifadesinin ise bu dinin hakikatini anlamada/kutsallarını anlamlandırmada çeşitli algı sorunlarına sebebiyet verdiği müşahede edilmektedir. Söz konusu eksikliği giderme ve yaşanan algılama sorunlarının çözümüne katkı amacı taşıyan bu çalışmada, öncelikle insanın anlama çabasında kavramlara yüklenen anlamların önemine vurgu yapılmış ve bir disiplini doğru algılamada ilgili disiplinde kullanılan kavramların terim/(ıstılâhî) anlamlarını bilmenin ehemmiyetine kısaca değinilmiştir. Ardından vahiy kavramının ve konuyla alakalı keşf, ilhâm, şruti ve revelation kavramlarının kısa semantik tahliline yer verilmiş, böylece daha sonra Hinduizm’de vahiy konusu işlenirken aslında hangi kavramın tercih edilmesinin daha yerinde olacağının alt yapısı hazırlanmıştır. Vahyin; inzâl ve tenzîl özelliğine sahip olması, Arapça ve kelamî nitelikte okunan bir şey olması, seçilmiş bir elçi ile mukayyet kılınıp bunun vahyi alanın değil gönderenin kendi iradî tasarrufunda bir konu olması gibi niteliklerine dikkat çekilerek bu kavramın mahiyet boyutunun ana çerçevesi çizilmeye çalışılmıştır. Daha sonra Hint düşüncesinde Vedaların kaynağı ve tanrı ile ilintisi üzerinde durularak Hinduizm’de vahiy anlayışının anlamsal iz düşümü çıkarılmıştır. Böylece, Hindu kutsal metinleri Vedaların kaynağı veya tanrı ile ilintisi konusunda Hindular arasında bir fikir birliğinin olmadığı; bunların rişi adı verilen bilge kişiler tarafından kişisel riyâzet neticesinde keşf ve müşâhede yoluyla elde edildiği; dolayısıyla bu durumun haricî bir olay olmayıp ancak saf tabiat, güzel amel ve çok gayretle elde edilebilen batınî/içsel bir olay olduğu saptanmıştır. Bu bağlamda, vahyin ancak tanrı-âlem ayrışmasını esas alan teist tanrı tasavvuruna sahip dinlerde söz konusu olabileceği, dolayısıyla tanrı-âlem bütünleşmesini ifade eden panteist tanrı tasavvuruna sahip Hinduizm’de vahiy yerine keşf ve ilhâm kavramlarının kullanımının daha yerinde olacağına dikkat çekilmiştir. Resumo: O artigo discute a conexão entre a interseccionalidade e a justiça social nas pesquisas educacionais. Parte da apresentação da interseccionalidade como lente analítica multifocal para interpretação social, passa por sua articulação ao pensamento bidimensional de justiça social, como alternativa frente às perspectivas investigativas unidimensionais, para discutir acerca das coletividades interseccionais e de uma justiça integradora. Conclui que investigações educacionais para a justiça social precisam estar vinculadas aos estudos interseccionais e, a interseccionalidade ao seu compromisso com a justiça social. It begins with the presentation of intersectionality as a multifocal analytical lens for social interpretation, and goes through its articulation to two-dimensional social justice thinking, as an alternative to one-dimensional investigative perspectives, to discuss intersectional collectivities and integrative justice. It is a hermeneutic study of works by Nancy Fraser and intersectionality intellectuals - such as, Patricia Hill Collins, Sirma Bilge, Angela Davis, Kimberlé Crenshaw, Lélia González, and Heleieth Saffioti. O presente trabalho pretende apresentar, em um primeiro momento, uma noção de interseccionalidade a partir da obra Interseccionalidade (2021), de Patricia Hill Collins e Sirma Bilge. Para tanto, em um primeiro momento consideraremos o percurso histórico de tal noção, bem como sua estreita relação com o feminismo negro a partir da ancoragem que esta noção fornece à tradição feminista negra no Brasil. É possível compreender a interseccionalidade sob diversas óticas, como um conceito, uma teoria, uma prática ou, a forma (...) mais aceita, como uma ferramenta analítica cujo objetivo é apresentar diagnósticos e respostas para problemas sociais. Essa noção torna possível ler os diversos marcadores sociais como a classe, a raça, o gênero, entre outros, ligados a cada indivíduo e não excludentes entre si. Com efeito, esses diversos marcadores sociais se sobrepõem e se interconectam de tal maneira que operam unificadamente e interferem na nossa experiência em sociedade, fato este que joga luz à necessidade de se considerar o que Collins chama de Bases das relações interseccionais de poder, que são o domínio cultural, estrutural, disciplinar e interpessoal de poder, que englobam a relação entre o processo histórico do país e contexto cultural analisado. É nesse sentido que, a despeito da heterogeneidade do termo, é possível não apenas extrair um entendimento geral, mas também assimilar essa heterogeneidade como uma vantagem em relação a outras propostas de leitura crítica do social, o que destaca a coerência que uma teoria feminista de construção participativa exige. Dito isso, propomos expor, em um segundo momento, a partir da obra Bem mais que ideias: a interseccionalidade como teoria social crítica (2022), como se tornou um desafio para a autora explicar o objeto teórico da interseccionalidade, pois se trata-se de uma disputa epistemológica para indicar o que caberia nesse “guarda-chuva” conceitual no campo da teoria crítica. Nessa proposta, Collins nos apresenta provocações sobre o que há de crítico em teorias sociais, para destacar os espaços possíveis nos quais a interseccionalidade se torna uma alternativa de teorias de transformação do social, adicionando dispositivos de leitura do social negligenciados por outras teorias. Türk ve İslam tarihinin kırılma noktalarından birisi 1040 yılında Selçuklular ile Gazneliler arasında cereyan eden Dandanakan Savaşı’dır. Savaşın ardından Selçuklular hızlı bir yükselişle özellikle Sünnî İslam coğrafyasında etkin ve belirleyici güç haline gelmiştir. Göçebe kültürden gelen ve bir oba hüviyetinde iken çok kısa bir sürede önlenemez bir şekilde hâkimiyet alanını Türkistan coğrafyasından Anadolu içlerine kadar genişleten Büyük Selçuklu Devleti, kurumsal olarak da olgunlaşmaya başlamıştır. Bu noktada hem merkezi yönetimde hem de vilayetlerde ortaya çıkan yetişmiş eleman ihtiyacını birçoğu daha önce Gazneli (...) devlet teşkilatında görev yapmış Fars asıllı devlet adamları karşılamıştır. Bu isimlerden birisi de ileride Nizâmülmülk adıyla şöhret bulacak ve namı isminin önüne geçecek olan Hasan b. Alî b. İshâk et-Tûsî’dir. Nizâmülmülk, devlet gücünün askeri alanda elde edilen zaferlere endekslendiği bir dönemde askerî, idarî, ilmî ve ekonomik alanda attığı adımlar ve aldığı tedbirlerle Büyük Selçuklu Devleti’nin kurumsallaşmasında son derece etkin bir isim olmuştur. Bu etkinlik neticesinde hem halk hem de devlet adamları nezdinde saygın bir yer edinmiştir. Bu çalışma çerçevesinde Nizâmülmülk’ün devlet bürokrasisi içerisindeki konumuna, hükümdar ve hanedan üyeleri ile olan ilişkilerine ve vezirlik sürecinde attığı adımların Selçuklu tarihine yansımalarına değinilecektir. Özet: Devlet kademesinde görev almaya Gazneliler Devleti’nin Horasan Valisi Ebü’l-Fazl Sûrî’nin yanında başlayan Nizâmülmülk, Horasan Bölgesi’nin Selçukluların kontrolüne geçmesiyle birlikte hizmetlerine Selçuklu Devleti’nde devam etmiştir. Çağrı Bey’in hizmetinde rüştünü ispat eden Nizâmülmülk, Çağrı Bey’in en güvendiği isimlerden biri haline gelmiştir. Öyle ki, Çağrı Bey ileride önce Horasan’ın sonrasında tüm Selçuklu yurdunun yönetimini üstlenecek olan oğlu Alparslan’ı Nizâmülmülk’e emanet etmiş, oğluna da Nizâmülmülk’ü bir baba olarak kabul etmesini, ona muhalefet etmemesini öğütlemiştir. Alparslan, babasının tavsiyeleri ve üvey kardeşi Süleyman ile giriştiği taht mücadelesinde gösterdiği yararlılık münasebetiyle devletin en önemli idari görevi olan vezirlik makamını Nizâmülmülk’e tevdi etmiştir. Bu dönemden itibaren vefatına kadar, yaklaşık 30 yıl kesintisiz bir süreyle Büyük Selçuklu Devleti’nin vezirliğini yapmış ve V./XI. yy.’ın ikinci yarısından itibaren Büyük Selçuklu siyasetinin en etkin figürü haline gelmiştir. Melikşah’ın tahta geçebilmesinin Nizâmülmülk ile ilişkilendirilmesi, onun döneminde elde edilen başarıların ve devlet sisteminin düzenlenmesi, şehirlerin imarı, ekonominin güçlenmesi gibi ülke içerisinde yaşanan olumlu gelişmelerin Nizâmülmülk’ün marifetiyle gerçekleştirildiğinin dillendirilmesi, Tanrı tarafından yeryüzünü yönetmek ve inşa etmek için seçildiği düşünülen bir sultan varken bir vezirin devlet için nimet olarak gösterilmesi sultanın vezirine bakışını etkilemiştir. Bu noktada üzerinde durulması gereken hususlardan birisi de Nizâmülmülk’ün kendisini nasıl gördüğü ve devlet içerisinde kendini nerede konumlandırdığıdır. Nizâmülmülk’ün Sultan Melikşah’a verdiği bir cevapta devletin geldiği noktayı ve sultanın mevcudiyetini kendi varlığıyla eşleştirmesi, tarihinin gördüğü en yetenekli vezirlerden biri olan Nizâmülmülk’ün özgüveninin son derece yüksek ve kendisini kudret sahibi olarak gördüğüne işaret etmektedir. Bu anlamlandırma halk nezdinde herhangi bir kutsiyeti bulunmayan vezirlik makamındaki bir kişinin, toplum nezdinde Allah tarafından seçildiğine inanılan kutlu kişiye meydan okutan gücü kendisinde hissetmesinin kaynağını sorgulatmaktadır. Aranan cevap Nizâmülmülk’ün vezirlik sürecinin çeşitli başlıklar altında ve bu başlıklara dair verilecek örneklerle incelenmesi neticesinde onun devletin iç işleyişine etkisinin tespitinde ve farklı kesimlerle kurduğu ilişkide saklıdır. Nizâmülmülk, Selçuklu tahtına karşı sıkı bir bağlılık göstermiştir. Bu bağlılığını lüzumu halinde savaş meydanında göğüs göğüse çarpışarak sergilemiş, gerekli olduğunda kıvrak zekâsı ile sorunları devlet için tehlikeli boyuta gelmeden çözmüş, siyasi öngörüsü ile aldığı tedbirler sayesinde devletin büyümesine katkı sağlamıştır. Onun bu sadakati ve samimiyeti, Selçuklu sultanları tarafından karşılık bırakılmamış, Alparslan vezirinin fikirlerine büyük önem verip tercihlerini bu doğrultuda şekillendirirken, aleyhine söylenen sözlerin hiçbirine kulak asmamıştır. Melikşah da, bir anlamda kendisine Selçuklu tahtını veren Nizâmülmülk’e gerekli hürmeti göstererek bütün devlet işlerinin yürütülmesini ona tevdi etmiş ve kendisini bir “baba” gibi gördüğünü ifade etmiştir. İlaveten Selçuklu tarihinde bir ilk olmak üzere Melikşah, Nizâmülmülk’e atabeg (el-emîrü’l-vâlid) unvanını vermiştir. Melikşah, Büyük Selçuklu tahtındaki ilk yıllarını, gençliğin etkisiyle, polo oynayıp, büyük av partileri düzenlemekle geçirmiş ve bundan dolayı devlet içerisinde bütün güç Nizâmülmülk’ün eline geçmiştir. Ortaya çıkan bu durum da “ülke resmen ve ismen sultanın olmakla birlikte gerçekte ‘Nizam’ına kavuştu.” ifadesiyle açıklanmıştır. Ayrıca Melikşah’ın saltanatı döneminde elde edilen askerî, siyasî ve ekonomik başarılar Nizâmülmülk’ün yeteneği ve devlet işlerinde attığı adımlara bağlanmıştır. Nizâmülmülk, hanedan ile kurduğu ilişkinin yanı sıra devlet kademesinde görev alan farklı zümrelerle de güven üzerine dayalı yakın bir ilişki biçimi geliştirmiştir. Örneğin, Nizâmülmülk’ün katıldığı askerî seferlerde bir nefer gibi askerlerin içerisinde savaşa katılması ordu içerisinde kendisine saygı duyulmasına yol açmıştır. Ayrıca, Melikşah ile Kirman Hâkimi Kavurd Bey arasındaki taht mücadelesinde Melikşah’ın safında yer almakla birlikte Kavurd Bey’i destekleyen bazı isimlerin yazdıkları destek mektuplarının ortaya çıkmasına engel olarak hem emirlerin korkularını yatıştırırmış hem de itibarını artırmıştır. Nizâmülmülk’ün yakın ilişki içerisinde olduğu bir diğer grup ilmiye sınıfı olmuştur. Bilge vezir, Tuğrul Bey döneminde Amidülmülk Kündürî tarafından takibata uğrayan ve baskılara maruz kalan ilim adamlarının yurtlarına dönebilmelerine imkân sağlamıştır. Bu ilim adamları da yurtlarına dönüşlerini sağlayan isme zihinlerinde ve gönüllerinde her zaman özel bir yer ayırmışlardır. Birçok âlimin çalışmalarını Nizâmülmülk’e ithaf etmesi, diğer saiklerle birlikte, bunun bir göstergesidir. Nizâmülmülk bir adım daha atarak, Sultan Alparslan ve Melikşah’ın müsaadeleriyle, bu ilim adamları için hâkim olunan coğrafyanın her tarafında ilimle iştigal edebilecekleri medreseler inşa etmiştir. Nizâmülmülk’ün adına nispetle Nizamiye Medreseleri olarak isimlendirilen bu medreselerde hem eğitim-öğretim kadrosuna hem de öğrenim süresi boyunca ve de mezun olduktan sonra öğrencilere sunulan imkânlar, insanların medreselere olan ilgisini arttırıyordu. Medreseler eliyle bir taraftan önceki dönemde yerlerinden edilen ve baskıya maruz kalan ilim adamlarına bir borç ödenip iade-i itibar sağlanırken diğer taraftan da Büyük Selçuklu Devleti’nin idari ve adli sisteminin ihtiyaç duyduğu yetişmiş insan gücü inşa edilmiştir. Nizâmülmülk, toplum lehine attığı adımlar ve sorunların çözümüne verdiği önem ile halkın desteğini sağlamıştır. Öyle ki insanların hayatları boyunca ona minnettar kaldığı vurgulanmıştır. Nizâmülmülk halkın sorunlarının çözümüne önem göstermiş ve onlarla yakından ilgilenmiştir. Nizâmülmülk’ün verdiği güven duygusu halkın hoşuna gitmiş ve toplum içerisinde kabul görmesine vesile olmuştur. Nizâmülmülk’ün bir diğer hasleti de fakirlere sofrasını açmasıdır. Böylece onlarla diyalog kurmuş ve gönüllerini kazanmıştır. Her yönüyle eksiksiz bir devlet adamı olan Nizâmülmülk, toplumun her türlü ihtiyacının çözümünü düşünmüş ve bu yönde adımlar atmıştır. Nizâmülmülk’ün toplumun her kesimi ile kurduğu samimi ve yakın ilişki o kadar büyük bir takdir ve beğeni toplamıştır ki bu durum Nizâmülmülk’ün toplum nezdinde sultan itibarı görmesine sebep olmuştur. İlaveten Selçuklu coğrafyasının her yerinden ve toplumun her kesiminden insanın kendisine yönelmesi hasebiyle Kâbe’ye benzetilmiştir. Nizâmülmülk, devlet kademesinde görev alan aile bireyleri, ilişki içerisinde olduğu âlimler, kendi ordusu ve emirleri ile bir güç odağı haline gelmiştir. Bunun sonucunda Nizâmülmülk, 11. yüzyılın son çeyreğinde rakipsiz bir şekilde Büyük Selçuklu siyasetinin en etkin figürü, Selçuklu yönetimini ve politikalarını belirleyen isim ve Selçuklu tarihinin en önemli olaylarında karar mercii olmuş ve sonuçta Selçuklu tarihine damga vurmuştur. İbnü’l-Esîr, Fatımî veziri Bedr el-Cemalî’nin kendisi için kullandığı sayısız lakabı kaydettikten sonra sadece Mısır’a hâkim olan bir devletin veziri bu kadar lakap kullanıyorsa Nizâmülmülk’ün “ilah”lık iddiasında bulunması gerekirdi diyerek hem Selçuklunun azametini hem de Selçuklu devletinde Nizâmülmülk’ün yerini göstermektedir. This article attempts a critical conversation between Kafka's _Der Prozess_ (posthumously published in 1925, translated into English as _The Trial_ in 1937) and two novels from the Mediterranean Basin. The Turkish author Bilge Karasu's _Gece_ (1985, translated into English as _Night_ by Güneli Gün in 1994) responds to the national conflicts intensified by the military coup in Türkiye (Turkey) in the 1980s with its dark portrayal of political conspiracies and unhinged violence. Almost thirty years later, Aziz conveys a similar (...) sense of social chaos and political disillusionment: her novel _Al-Ṭābūr_ (2013, translated into English as _The Queue_ Elisabeth Jaquette in 2016) addresses the aftermath of the 2011 Egypt uprising. In addition to the social critique that shapes the dystopian allegories of the novels, Kayı_ş_cı Akkoyun examines the discursive conflicts and gaps through which Kafka, Karasu, and Aziz expose the constructed nature of oppressive structures and the arbitrariness of authority. She argues that the disjointed dystopian narratives of Kafka, Karasu, and Aziz not only portray the horrors witnessed at a particular place and time but also share a common utopian vision that extends to the future through the authors' imaginative struggle against totalizing forces of uneven modernization.
