Experimental evidence of the last decades has made the status of ``collapses of the wave function'' even more shaky than it already was on conceptual grounds: interference effects turn out to be detectable even when collapses are typically expected to occur. Non-collapse interpretations should consequently be taken seriously. In this paper we argue that such interpretations suggest a perspectivalism according to which quantum objects are not characterized by monadic properties, but by relations to other systems. Accordingly, physical systems may possess (...) different properties with respect to different ``reference systems''. We discuss some of the relevant arguments, and argue that perspectivalism both evades recent arguments that single-world interpretations are inconsistent and eliminates the need for a privileged rest frame in the relativistic case. This article examines and assesses Bernard Hodgson’s critique of the Neoclassical concept of rationality and its place in the literature. It is argued that Hodgson’s Trojan horse critique is superior to the others because it addresses the role of empiricist epistemology in reducing reason to instrumental rationality and consequent disappearance of the human subject of political economy. The second phase of the empiricist level of analysis reintroduces the capacities for ethical deliberation, self-determination, and the socio-historical conditions and institutional setting of (...) the economic agent. Because Hodgson’s solutions presuppose empiricist terrain, they are arbitrary. This occurs because the fundamental problem of Neoclassical rationality is its ontology. Yet by introducing the human subject into economic theory, Hodgson’s solutions move onto an ontological terrain adequate for economic analysis of human subjects. (shrink)

The impulse behind this paper is the conviction that Heidegger‘s turn to the Greeks is, for the most part, best understood as driven by the effort to arrive at a different, non-metaphysical, ethical sensibility. In his brief »Űber den Humanismus » Heidegger speaks of the need to arrive at an «original ethics,» that is, an ethics of sources which is not defined by the imperatives driving ethics as we know it today. I am sure that this is what Heidegger finds (...) in the Greeks–Greek thinkers who he regards as quite apart from the canonical views dominating philosophy today–and that this is especially the case with Heidegger›s treatment of the pre-Socratic thinkers. Heidegger›s turn to Anaximander›s fragment, which he takes as the «oldest» document of the Western world regarding justice, is, along with some issues that emerge in Homer, the central text for my own efforts to develop this ethical sensibility in Heidegger. In The Elm and the Expert, Jerry Fodor tries to reconcile three philosophical positions he is presently committed to: a computational theory of mind, intentional realism and a denotational theory of meaning. One problem he faces is this: a denotational semantics, according to which the meaning of a singular term like a name is exhausted by its referent, seems to rule out there being true intentional generalizations, or generalizations which advert to the contents of a subject's mental states. That there (...) are such true generalizations is a major element in Fodor's intentional realism. Accordingly, Fodor is forced to find a way of dissolving this apparent incompatibility. This paper looks at his attempts to do so and concludes that they fail. (shrink)

This study proposes a conceptual model to explain persistent, accepted-as-normal corporate wrongdoing (hereafter banality of wrongdoing), particularly for high performance organizations. The model describes five explanatory variables: the culture of competition, ends-biased leadership, missionary zeal, legitimizing myth, and the corporate cocoon. Our thesis is that the nature of competition drives both legitimate and illegitimate goal-seeking to adopt an iconoclastic (rule-breaking) orientation. High performance organizations are favorable hosts for wrongdoing because high performance requires aggressive behavior at the ethical margins of what (...) is acceptable. The way leadership reacts to competition sets the stage for ethical or unethical cultures to develop. Ends-biased leadership will project strong vision, using ideology and legitimizing myth as tools to inspire and motivate. The resulting missionary zeal justifies using questionable means because of the perceived value of the end. One critical method for building strong culture is creating a sense of being separate and apart from the ordinary. This cocoon effect may create a self-referential value system that is significantly at odds with mainstream culture and in which wrongdoing is banal. We intend an empirical study of the variables described in this model. (shrink)

This paper investigates the link between (radical) evil and the existence of God. Arguing with contemporary atheist thinkers, such as Richard Dawkins and Victor Stenger, I hold that one can take the existence of evil as a sign of the existence of God rather than its opposite. The work of Immanuel Kant, especially his thought on evil, is a fertile source to enliven this intuition. sThe salience of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novels for philosophical reflection is undeniable. By providing a myriad of often dialectically mediating perspectives on certain subjects, he can serve as a rich fount for philosophical polemic. Many readers have been prone to confine the philosophical import of Dostoevsky’s prose to such a polyphony of dialectically interacting perspectives. In this article, this topic is taken up with a focus on the differing points of view on human salvation espoused by the protagonists of The Brothers (...) Karamazov. It will be argued that Dostoevsky held to a view that only through certain existential struggles the human agent can attain a full-blooded experience of redemption. This argument will be made from the dialectical development of predominantly Ivan and Alyosha Karamazov. (shrink)

A wide-ranging attempt to develop a theory of ethical life from a hermeneutic understanding of language.

Schopenhauer’s bifurcation between optimistic and pessimistic religions is made, so I argue here, by means of five criteria: to perceive of existence as punishment, to believe that salvation is not attained through ‘works’, to preach compassion so as to lead towards ascetics, to manifest an aura of mystery around religious doctrines and to, at some deep level, admit to the allegorical nature of religious creeds. By clearly showing what makes up the ‘pessimism’ of a ‘pessimistic religion’, Schopenhauer’s own philosophical pessimism (...) can be clarified since he posits a strict correlation between the truth of philosophy and religion. Accordingly, Schopenhauer’s pessimism is by means of this process clarified as non-radical and providing a genuine ‘highest good’ that is more than absolute denial. (shrink)

El siguiente artículo examina la noción de resistencia elaborando un análisis que problematiza el lugar de la representación en política y en democracia. En un primer momento, se plantea el problema a partir de un relato que narra un episodio y un gesto especiales de algunos prisioneros liberados de un campo de concentración. Desde esta cuestión, se revisan las aportaciones de Michel Foucault relativas a la resistencia que dan como resultado, en definitiva, un desacople de las relaciones entre poder y (...) política. Así, la resistencia sugiere un vínculo con la política que no se restringe a las formas ni a los códigos de la política convencional. No obstante, las mismas aportaciones de Foucault plantean la cuestión de la libertad como una suerte de mandato para el sujeto, frente al cual la resistencia corre el riesgo de quedar atrapada. La figura de Bartleby (Melville) ofrecerá la ocasión para sugerir una hipótesis que permita indagar en torno a una resistencia radical que no se vea coaccionada por el privilegio de la representación. Posteriormente, se examinan las aportaciones de Jacques Derrida y su lectura del inquietante personaje de Melville, que posibilitan una puesta en cuestión de la publicidad irrestricta supuesta en los dominios de lo político, la política y la democracia como democracia representativa, e incluso una interrogación exigente de tales conceptos heredados. Frente al canon, Derrida permitirá pensar justamente una resistencia radical a la manera de cierto secreto que, diciéndose, no obstante, se sustrae de la representación, y que entonces será irreductible a los dominios de lo público-político, lo que no querrá decir que ese secreto se restrinja a lo privado y posibilite replantear la cuestión democrática. Finalmente, se presentan algunas conclusiones tentativas y una síntesis de aquellos desafíos que quedan anunciados. (shrink)

The largest purpose of this paper is to ask about how it is that life is re-presented by us. The argument is that life should be considered as a matter not of a collection of objects, but of a movement, of time. Furthermore, the claim is that the conceptual language of philosophy has the liability of ossifying this movement of life but that music, which is time and movement above all, is able to keep pace with this movement of life.

In this article I respond to Sacha Golob's critique of my stance on Kantian nonconceptualism, objectivity, and animal perception of spatial particulars.
