Implementing corporate social responsibility (CSR) in supply chains is not a trivial task. In fact, many firms in recent years have publicly proclaimed that in order to keep their CSR commitments, they had to reduce reliance on external suppliers by vertically integrating their operations. Our aim in this article is to examine whether there is truly a relationship between a firm’s CSR performance and its level of vertical integration. Drawing on a multi-industry sample of 2,715 firm-year observations, and after addressing (...) endogeneity concerns, we demonstrate that firms with higher CSR performance tend to vertically integrate more (or, outsource less). We also demonstrate that this tendency is weaker for firms that have higher degrees of asset specificity or international diversification. Our core conclusion is that CSR performance and outsourcing are at odds, but firms can reconcile this tension by deepening their collaborations with suppliers. (shrink)

En este artículo se comparan los análisis hechos por Aristóteles y Peirce dela inferencia analógica desde un punto de vista formal, es decir, sin prestaratención a su uso retórico o argumentativo. Desde este punto de vista formal,ambos filósofos coinciden en que la analogía es una inferencia compuesta,pero no concuerdan en los elementos simples que la componen. Aristótelesafirma que la analogía es compuesta sólo por la inducción y la deducción,en cambio Peirce, en su última explicación, incluye como tercer elementoa la abducción. (...) In this work, it is argued that one of the foundations of NiklasLuhmann’s theory of social systems, namely that it has no ontology, would prevent the elaboration of explanations in sociology. Because the theory has a formal-logical foundation, which does not presuppose ontology, there are insurmountable obstacles to achieving this objective. For this reason, it is valid to wonder about the merit of a theory that, after 20 years, insists on not aligning itself with ontological premises in a robust way (...) and suggests, therefore, a refusal to integrate sociology within the set of factual sciences. However, we think that the richness of Luhmann’s work allows a dialogue with the mainstream of contemporary theoretical practice. Three rules about what “should not be done” are revalidated from this analysis to philosophically base a theory in sociology and a key suggestion to overcome the problem of explanation in Luhmann’s sociology: social science seeks and directs its activity towards discovery and the use of substantive, real distinctions that also enrich the factual content of statements about social reality. The article departs from empirical data about how poverty affects electoral participation and the so-called “other forms of participation”. This serves to criticize the dichotomy between participation and representation, and to normatively defend representative democracy.

El poema épico de Ovidio -una historia universal mítico-etiológica- se abre con un relato acerca del origen del mundo, seguido por la creación del hombre. La transformación del caos en cosmos es, por ende, la primera metamorfosis. El texto continúa con una descripción de las Edades decrecientes, puesto que la instauración de un orden armonioso siempre está seguida por su disolución (HOLZBERG 2002: 120). Este trabajo se propone estudiar la cosmogonía y antropogonía ovidianas a partir de las categorías específicas enunciadas (...) por W. BURKERT (1999: 87-106) y explorar las relaciones entre lo que se ha denominado carácter 'tecnomórfico' de dicha cosmogonía y la figura del poeta en cuanto tal. Ovid's epic poem, a mythical and etiologic world history, starts with a story about the origin of the world, followed by the creation of man. Thus, the first metamorphosis is the transformation of chaos into cosmos. The text continues with a description of the decreasing Ages, since the establishment of a harmonious order is always followed by its dissolution (HOLZBERG 2002: 120). This work intends to study ovidian cosmogony and anthropogony starting from specific categories set out by W. BURKERT (1999: 87-106) and explore the relationship between what has been termed technomorphic character of cosmogony and the figure of the poet itself. (shrink)

I claim that the increase in complexity in the trace of Paleolithic stone tools can be parsimoniously explained by postulating the emergence of effective mechanisms for the social transmission of representations. I propose that Paleolithic tools, similar to more contemporary tools, were subject to a process of evolution by artificial selection based on functionality.
