Prokaryotes growing at high temperatures have a high proportion of charged residues in their proteins to stabilize their 3D structure. By mining 175 disparate bacterial and archaeal proteomes we found that, against the general trend for charged residues, the frequency of aspartic acid residues decreases strongly as natural growth temperature increases. In search of the explanation, we hypothesized that the reason for such unusual correlation is the deleterious consequences of spontaneous chemical transformations of aspartate at high temperatures. Our subsequent statistical (...) analysis supported this hypothesis. Les thèses dites de la “croissance endogène” mettent fort justement en avant le rôle clef d’un certain nombre de secteurs économiques dans le phénomène de croissance des revenus. Cependant, la modélisation qui s’y rattache conduit parallèlement à émettre un certain nombre de jugements normatifs erronés quant au rôle légitime de la puissance publique.En particulier, la structure même des modèles de croissance endogène interdit de rendre compte du caractère subjectif de la valeur et néglige les aspects profondément individuels de l’accumulation (...) de capital. Par conséquent, elle ne s’intéresse qu’aux aspects matériels de cette dernière.Loin de justifier l’intervention publique en vue d’augmenter statistiquement le PIB, les connaissances apportées par la théorie autrichienne conduisent à préférer la propriété naturelle et la liberté de contracter qui en découle comme véritable moyen de faire croître, à un rythme soutenu, les capitaux matériels et immatériels des individus.The so-called theories of “endogeneous growth” rightfully emphasize the key role of some particular economic sectors in the process of income growth. However, their modelling leads to erroneous normative judgements in the rightful role of the government authorities.The very structure of endogeneous growth models makes it impossible to account for the subjective character of value and disregards the deeply individual aspects of capital accumulation. Consequently, it only takes an interest in its material aspects.Far from justifying public intervention in order to statistically increase the GDP, the basic tenets of the Austrian theory rather lead to prefer natural property and the freedom to contract that goes with it, as real means to have the tangible and intangible individual assets grow at a steady rythm. L’ambiguïté qui existe entre l’interprétation du principe de différence par le maximin ou par le leximin est reconsidérée. Le maximin satisfait seulement le principe de Pareto-faible (x>y ssi chaque composante de x > la composante correspondante de y), tandis que le leximin satisfait le principe de Pareto-fort. À la différence du maximin, le leximin n’est pas représentable par des courbes d’indifférence. Dans la position originelle, le choix leximin l’emporterait sur le choix maximin ((2, 4) > (2,3)), qui semble plus (...) proche des formulations de Rawls. Plusieurs solutions de l’ambiguïté sont évoquées, notamment celle que propose Alain Boyer, qui consiste à distinguer le maximin et le principe de différence en précisant que le second est le premier couplé à une règle tierce, la minimisation de l’inégalité. Cette solution, qui s’appuie par ailleurs sur un raisonnement suspect de Rawls sur la possibilité de trouver un troisième vecteur en enlevant n au plus riche, ce qui semble présupposer, comme le fait Boyer, que l’existence du fisc redistributeur est reconnue comme une possibilité dans la position originelle, est jugée insuffisante, en ce qu’elle ne vaut que pour le cas de deux individus (même si Rawls parle de deux classes). On suggère d’utiliser, pour les cas où le nombre des individus ou des classes est >2, un critère tel que la variance. Mais cela s’avère toujours insuffisant, et non justifiable dans la position originelle, et l’on fait appel à la théorie de la décision proposée par Gilboa et Schmeidler (1989 ; 1997) pour suggérer, par exemple, que le choix juste à faire entre (1, 2, 3) et (0, 3, 3) se porte sur le second état (où le plus pauvre a moins que dans l’autre cas). Cette règle demeure cependant plus proche du maximin (généralisé) que du leximin, peut être rapprochée de ce que l’on appelle le prioritarisme, et peut donc conserver une coloration appréciablement rawlsienne. Jusqu'au IXe siècle, en Orient où l'Empire romain perdure comme en Occident où il n'existe plus, « l'Église » se pense et se vit sur le mode synodal, avec les nuances qu'apporte, ici, l'idéologie eusébienne, donnant le primat au « palais royal » sur le « siège apostolique », et, là, l'augustinienne, qui soutient l'inverse. Deux siècles plus tard, alors que l'Empire byzantin a cessé de prétendre à l'universalité romaine, la chrétienté latine occidentale ne rêve que de renovatio romani imperii, (...) à son bénéfice. Entre ces deux moments, il y a l'éphémère aventure de Gerbert d'Aurillac qui, après avoir défendu à Reims la cause des évêques contre le pape, devint, par la grâce d'Otton III, le pape de l'An Mil, Sylvestre II : c'était le nom que portait le pontife du temps de Constantin, auquel le nouvel empereur ne cesse de se référer, en souhaitant un empire moins germanique qu'universel. Ce dut être une grande joie, pour le pape, d'entendre Otton dire en 1001 : « Nous proclamons Rome capitale du monde et nous reconnaissons l'Église romaine comme mère de toutes les Églises. » Désormais, la communion n'est plus réglée par la lex communis ecclesiae catholicae, mais par 1'unius arbitrium et Sylvestre II parlera en « père universel », conscient d'exercer seul le ministère de Pierre. C'est dans ces fortes convictions que l'Église romaine affrontera la crise de la chrétienté des XIIIe-XIVe siècles. Up until the ninth century, when the Roman Empire continued in the East but ceased to exist in the West, « the Church » thought and lived in the synodal mode. The slight difference was that Eusebien ideology prevailed in the East, which gave primacy to the « royal palace » over the « apostolic seat », while Augustinien ideology held the contrary in the West. Two centuries later, when the Byzantine Empire ceased to pretend to Roman universality, western Latin Christianity dreamed only of the renewal of the Roman Empire, to its own advantage. Between these two moments, there was the ephemeral adventure of Gerbert of Aurillac who, after having defended the cause of the bishops against the pope at Reims, became pope Sylvester II in the year 1000, thanks to Otto III. Sylvester was the name of the pontiff at the time of Constantine, to whom the new emperor didn’t cease to compare himself in wishing an empire less Germanic than universal. It must have been a great joy for the pope to hear Otto say in 1001 : « We proclaim Rome the capital of the world and we recognize the Roman Church as mother of all the Churches. » In the future, communion was no longer regulated by the Catholic Church's common law, but by the unius arbitrium, and Sylvester II will speak as « universal father », conscious of exercising alone the ministry of Peter. It is with these strong convictions that the Roman Church would face the crisis of Christianity in the XIII and XIV centuries. (shrink)

Le présent essai tente d'élucider la théorie de la Justice selon Proudhon. Ce penseur est si connu que sa notoriété masque sa pensée. D'ailleurs peut-on, à bon droit parler de la pensée de Proudhon? L'autodidacte écrase chez lui le philosophe et lui fait écrire de telles absurdités, en apparence savantes, que le lecteur cherche en vain à comprendre la cohérence du tout. Célèbre pour avoir écrit que la propriété était le vol, pour avoir polémiqué avec Marx, il exerça une influence (...) énorme au XIXe siècle, tant au titre de théoricien des mutuelles ouvrières que comme fédéraliste libertaire, maître à penser des anarchistes. Il est beaucoup moins connu comme apologiste de la Force. Celle-ci selon lui s'exprime par la guerre, divine en ce qu'elle recèle la vérité donc la Justice. La Force est encore celle que les hommes sentent en eux lorsqu'ils ont fait taire le Souverain, l'Hétéronome qu'incarne au plus haut degré la religion, obstacle à leur sentiment inné du juste. C'est l'équilibre économique, selon cet adversaire déclaré du conflit entre capital et travail, qui permet aux hommes de se connaître pour ce qu'ils sont, justes et forts, tels enfin que la Révolution les a fait. La relation entre la philosophie et la mystique forme une question " à la limite ", que la fatalité a le plus souvent déclinée en une suite d'oppositions frontales : entre le rationnel et l'émotionnel, le logique et le pathologique, le discours et l'indicible... Depuis quelques années cependant, plusieurs motifs portent à reconsidérer cette relation singulière. Une somme d'informations sans précédent sur les diverses traditions mystiques, sur leurs variabilités historiques et géographiques est désormais accessible. En outre, la mystique est devenue (...) un objet œcuménique et interreligieux de premier plan qui invite à reposer la question de l'essence du religieux dans la traversée herméneutique des différences confessionnelles. Enfin, on enregistre une forte demande de redressement spéculatif face à l'essor actuel des sectes et au développement des syncrétismes religieux. Mais le philosophe est-il qualifié pour comprendre la mystique? A quelles conditions? De son côté, le mystique n'a-t-il point tendance à cacher sa dette à l'égard de l'expérience de la pensée, voire des concepts philosophiques? Plus profondément encore, faut-il lier la mystique au seul " religieux "? La philosophie n'est-elle pas un exercice spirituel, une expérience? C'est justement par cette entrée " expérientielle " dans la question que le présent ouvrage trouve son originalité. Grâce aux contributions de spécialistes qu'il réunit, il répond à trois tâches précises : redéfinir le concept d'expérience dès lors qu'il est assigné à la philosophie et au religieux ; évoquer dans une perspective critique les grands figures historiques, témoins et acteurs de l'intersection des deux champs, philosophique et mystique ; mettre à l'épreuve, selon une perspective systématique et au voisinage des œuvres majeures de Simone Weil, Franz Rosenzweig, Emmanuel Lévinas, Éric Weil et Maurice Blondel, les différentes théorisations d'une relation finalement plus présente qu'on ne le dit, dans la structuration du pensable contemporain. L'affirmation selon laquelle le pouvoir, pour Michel Foucault, serait "sans dehors", n'est pas aussi évidente qu'il y paraît. Le pouvoir a en effet un fort degré d'élaboration : il requiert pour s'exercer un minimum de continuité, de stabilité, de prévisibilité. Il laisse donc hors champ un domaine des relations humaines où la continuité est brisée, la stabilité défaite, la prévisibilité impossible. En parcourant les dits et écrits de Foucault de 1969 à 1984, cet ouvrage approche de cet autre domaine, (...) ici nommé "bataille". Cette scission entre deux objets de l'étude historique nous renvoie à une autre scission qui concerne l'écriture même de l'histoire, toujours prise entre la recherche de continuités et l'affrontement au discontinu, entre l'intelligibilité de l'événement et son irréductible singularité. Il y a là non seulement une certaine manière d'écrire l'histoire, mais également une certaine manière de se tenir devant l'histoire. (shrink)

Petites absences, décrochages, distractions : notre relation au monde visible est ponctuée de ces éclipses infimes. Face à ce qui réclame sans cesse notre attention - écrans d'ordinateur ou de télévision, signaux, spectacles -, nous vivons dans l'intermittence du regard et de l'écoute. Confrontés aux histoires les plus intenses, aux images les plus fortes, nous ne cessons de perdre le fil de ce qui semble essentiel. Que manifestent ces brèves pannes du sens? Une pesanteur et une aliénation? Ou une insaisissable (...) liberté Ce sont ces alternances de présence et d'absence, de plein et de vide, de net et de flou, que tente de recueillir ce livre, comme un voyage à la fois drôle et grave dans les minuscules fuites de la perception. À rebours de ses transpositions modernes, l’hagiographie médiévale semble bien être « la sœur de l’art barbare et charmant des enlumineurs et des verriers » (Huysmans). Le mépris du corps qui peut en effet s’y rencontrer manifeste en vérité un intérêt phénoménologique pour le principe de résistance de ce même corps, support certes parfois paradoxal d’une chair abandonnée mais réceptacle fort opérant d’une advenue de la transcendance. L’œuvre hagiographique d’Alcuin, en une remarquable rhétorique de la pudeur, nous enseigne ici (...) que le corps relève bien de la pesanteur mais permet aussi à l’être de se comprendre (la conscience que possède un sujet de devoir s’élever vers Dieu n’étant possible qu’à condition que le corps lui ait d’abord patiemment enseigné ce qu’il en est de la spatialité). La propre composition littéraire de la Vita Richarii se sert ainsi de la notion même de distance, forme spatio-temporelle du sentir, pour le mettre en scène. (shrink)

O episcopado francês e a lei de Separação - Reflexão sobre um processo de reconhecimento ( The French episcopate and the Law of Separation -Reflection on a process of recognition - L`épiscopat français et la loi de Séparation - Retour sur un processus de reconnaissance). O “princípio da modernidade” – introduzido pela Revolução Francesa e ratificado por um conjunto de leis durante o século XIX – rompe com o tradicional “princípio do Estado confessional católico” e estabelece o regime de separação (...) entre a Igreja Católica e o Estado francês. Como a Igreja recebeu o regime de separação entre Igreja e Estado, constituído à sua revelia e, geralmente, contra ela? O artigo propõe-se a responder a pergunta, destacando dois pontos de vista: a) o da ruptura, segundo o qual a instituição católica, marcada pelo princípio do Estado cristão, nutre forte hostilidade contra o regime laico, ainda que estabelecendo com ele acordos práticos; b) e o da continuidade, sob o qual a Igreja acolhe e defende o princípio da “sã laicidade” e justifica a liberdade pública de consciência. Baseado em minuciosa leitura de documentos oficiais da Igreja e do episcopado francês, o artigo dialoga com os dois pontos de vista evocados, analisando seus termos e interpretando criticamente seus pressupostos e suas teses. Palavras-chave: Estado confessional; Estado laico; Laicidade; Episcopado francês.The "principle of modernity" - introduced by the French Revolution and ratified by a set of laws during the nineteenth century - breaks with the traditional "principle of the Catholic confessional state" and establishes the separation between the Catholic Church and the French State. How did the Church receive the system of separation of church and state, made in absentia and generally against the church? This paper seeks to answer that question, highlighting two points of view: a) the break, according to which the Catholic institution, marked by the principle of the Christian State, nourishes strong hostility against the secular regime, although establishing practical agreements with such regime b) the point of view of continuity, under which the Church welcomes and embraces the principle of "healthy secularism" and justifies the public liberty of conscience. Based on careful reading of official documents of the Church and of the French episcopate, this article dialogues with the two mentioned points of view , analyses and interprets in a critical way their terms, assumptions and theses. Résumé Le “principe de la modernité” – introduit par la Révolution française et ratifié par un ensemble de lois durant le XIXème siècle – rompt avec le traditionnel “principe de l’État confessionnel catholique” et établit le régime de séparation entre l’Église catholique et l’État français. Comment l’Église a-t-elle reçu le régime de séparation entre Église et État, institué malgré elle, et, généralement, contre elle? L’article se propose de répondre à cette question en soulignant deux points de vue: a) celui de la rupture qui fait que l’institution catholique, marquée par le principe de l’État chrétien, nourrit une forte hostilité envers le régime laïque, bien qu’elle passe des accords pratiques avec lui; b) celui de la continuité, qui fait que l’Église accueille et défend le principe de la “saine laïcité” et justifie la liberté publique de conscience. L'avancement des idées, en sciences, ne s'effectue pas en champs disciplinaires isolés, cloisonnés : il est au contraire, entre domaines et disciplines, par-delà les frontières institutionnelles, une circulation de concepts, par importations, par exportations - des jeux en nombre de transferts, par glissements métaphoriques ou par construction de rapports analogiques. Ces processus, à forte valeur heuristique, mais également à risque, sont examinés en cet ouvrage, étudiant les modes d'appropriation en sciences de gestion, en sciences politiques, sciences juridiques et sciences économiques, (...) de concepts issus d'autres sciences - ingénierique, physique et astrophysique, biologie, écologie : concepts d'attraction, d'attracteur étrange, de vie, de cycle de vie, de survie, concepts de système et d'automate, etc. Par-delà ces premières études, sur la circulation des concepts scientifiques, il s'agit aussi d'interroger la façon dont les univers métaphoriques dans lesquels puisent les acteurs sociaux peuvent éclairer l'histoire d'un champ social. This volume collects and translates Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe’s studies of Heidegger, written and revised between 1990 and 2002. All deal with Heidegger’s relation to politics, specifically through Heidegger’s interpretations of the poetry of Hölderlin. Lacoue-Labarthe argues that it is through Hölderlin that Heidegger expresses most explicitly his ideas on politics, his nationalism, and the importance of myth in his thinking, all of which point to substantial affinities with National Socialism. Lacoue-Labarthe not only examines the intellectual background--including Romanticism and "German ideology"--of (...) Heidegger's uses and abuses of poetry, he also attempts to reestablish the vexed relationship between poetry and philosophy outside the bounds of the Heideggerian reading. He turns to Walter Benjamin and Theodor Adorno, as well as Paul Celan, arguing for the necessity of poetry as an engagement with history. While Heidegger's readings of Hölderlin attempt to appropriate poetry for mythic and political ends, Lacoue-Labarthe insists that poetry and thought can, and must, converge in another way. Jeff Fort provides a precise translation capturing the spirit and clarity of Lacoue-Labarthe’s writing, as well as an introduction clearly situating the debates addressed in these essays. (shrink)

The recent publication of André Bazin's Écrits complets (2018), an enormous two-volume edition of 3000 pages which increases ten-fold Bazin's available corpus, provides opportunities for renewed reflection on, and possibly for substantial revisions of, this key figure in film theory. On the basis of several essays, I propose a drastic rereading of Bazin's most explicitly philosophical notion of “ontology.” This all too familiar notion, long settled into a rather dust-laden couple (“Bazin and ontology”) nonetheless retains its fascination. Rather than attempting (...) to provide a systematic reworking of this couple along well established lines, particularly those defined by realism and indexicality, this article proposes to shift the notion of ontology in Bazin from its determination as actual existence toward a more radical concept of ontology based on the notion of mimesis, particularly as articulated, in a Heideggerian mode, by Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe. This more properly ontological concept, also paradoxically and radically improper, is shown to be at work already in Bazin's texts, and it allows us to see that far from simplistically naturalizing photographic technology, Bazin does the contrary: he technicizes nature. If Bazin says that the photograph is a flower or a snowflake, he also implies that, like photographs, these are likewise a kind of technical artifact, an auto-mimetic reproduction of nature. Bazin likewise refers to film as a kind of skin falling away from the body of History, an accumulating pellicule in which nature and history disturbingly merge. This shifted perspective on Bazin's thinking is extended further in reference to Georges Didi-Huberman on the highly mimetic creatures known as phasmids, insects that mimic their environement. I extend this into the dynamic notion of eternal return, an implicit dimension of Bazin's thinking, clarified here in reference to Giorgio Agamben and the “immemorial image” which, like Bazin's “Death Every Afternoon,” presents an eminently repeatable deathly image, an animated corpse-world that can be likened to hell. Este trabalho versará especificamente sobre um ponto de vista recorrente na obra de Guimarães Rosa: o infantil. Para tanto, Miguilim e Dito, as crianças-poetas, nos proporcionarão ensinamentos que transcendem as dicotomias dos homens velhos, ilustrando o potencial poético da experiência da morte, seja a própria ou de outrem. Recorreremos aos estudos rosianos de Melo e Souza (2008) e a diversos pensadores da morte, (...) como Michel de Montaigne (2016) e Philippe Ariès (2017), além de pensadores da vida, como Miguel de Unamuno (2013), para analisar a experiência da morte não mais como um nefasto acontecimento, mas como parte essencial da vida que não cessa de brotar.Palavras-chave: Morte. Le grand mérite de cette traduction est de finalement mettre à la disposition des lecteurs, en français, un certain nombre d’essais éclairant le fil conducteur d’une œuvre complexe et diversifiée. Philippe de Lara souligne à juste titre qu’il faut trouver le sens de cette œuvre dans la critique de ce que Taylor désigne comme «la tradition épistémologique», et que cette entreprise procède par un mode d’enquête particulier, les arguments transcendantaux, articulation à la fois conceptuelle et historique de l’identité moderne. (...) Cette critique de la tradition épistémologique vise principalement la compréhension particulière de la faculté d’agir qu’elle véhicule ; elle s’adresse à l’imaginaire moderne que ces philosophies, issues de l’empirisme et du cartésianisme, ont contribué à forger. Trois thèmes de l’anthropologie philosophique de Taylor sont présentés comme particulièrement centraux, ici: la «philosophie de l’expression», la notion d’interprétation, et la notion d’évaluation forte. L’objectivité des valeurs et l’affirmation de la commensurabilité des fins impliquent que la pratique herméneutique des sciences humaines ne nous condamne pas au relativisme, danger contre lequel Taylor nous met régulièrement en garde. Le Descartes de Cassirer est un livre profondément original, tant par ses thèmes, qui touchent à la fois au fondement de la métaphysique cartésienne qu'aux rapports avec Corneille ou Christine de Suède, que par sa méthode, laquelle emprunte autant à Goethe qu'à Cohen et entretient une discussion de fond avec Dilthey. Ce livre appartient ainsi à la fois à une série d'études sur l'idéalisme propre à l'école de Marbourg, série en laquelle il côtoie par exemple le Descartes'Erkenntisstheorie de Natorp, et (...) à des études biographiques plus proprement cassirerienne telles par exemple son Kant's Lebel' und Lehre, ou encore ses études sur Rousseau. En dépit de la limpidité du propos et de l'écriture, ici magistralement rendus par la remarquable traduction de Philippe Guilbert, c'est un principe herméneutique très novateur qui commande le travail biographique. Il s'agit de concevoir l'unité dynamique de la vie et de l'œuvre en la reconduisant à la personnalité vivante dont la racine transcendantale est la spontanéité. Si donc Cassirer s'efforce ici de restituer l'unité de la vie et de l'œuvre de Descartes et renvoie à un principe exégétique goethéen, c'est néanmoins sur fond d'une philosophie proprement transcendantale, et donc en se distinguant de Dilthey. Car cette herméneutique, que Cassirer applique notamment à Rousseau, Kant, Goethe, Schiller et Cohen, n'est rendue possible que par l'unité synthétique et productive du sujet que fonde la philosophie des formes symboliques. La structure même de l'ouvrage qui, partant des "Problèmes fondamentaux du cartésianisme", inscrit ensuite cette œuvre dans l'ensemble de son époque, marque bien les niveaux historiographiques ici au travail : on s'élève progressivement de l'histoire vivante d'une œuvre à la Geistesgeschichte, à l'histoire de l'esprit à laquelle elle contribue et en laquelle elle trouve sa pleine signification. Ce livre est donc tout aussi bien une passionnante étude sur Descartes, dont les traductions partielles et fort "libres" ne donnaient jusqu'à aujourd'hui qu'une médiocre idée, qu'un maillon essentiel de la reconstitution de la modernité philosophique. This book argues that ethical business behavior can be enhanced by taking fuller account of human nature, particularly with respect to the need for creating relatively small communities within the corporation. Timothy Fort discusses this premise in relation to the three predominant theories of business ethics--stakeholder, virtue, and contract. Drawing heavily from philosophy, he analyzes traditional business ethics and legal theory. This paper argues that business can be helpfully conceived of as a mediating institution. Drawing upon neo-conservative theology, the author argues that mediating institutions serve a vital function in a free society to provide social justice out of an expanded civil society and provide a framework for a flourishing free market. Such institutions also nourish the attitudinal orientation of solidarity in applying the principle of subsidiarity by which self-interest becomes fulfilled through concern for others.The author further argues that businesses also (...) be conceived of as mediating institutions and thereby be held to criteria of meeting associationalneeds. In addition to normative reasons for revising the social contract so that businesses do serve the role of mediating institutions, contemporary management theories demonstrate that businesses can also meet their social obligations of creating wealth while meeting associational needs. This paper is a response to a recent colloquy among Professors David Messick, Donna Wold, and Edwin Harman. I defend Messick’s naturalist methodology, which suggests that people inherently categorize others and act altruistically toward certain people in a given person’s in-group. This paper suggests that an anthropological reason for this grouping tendency is a limited human neural ability to process large numbers of relationships. But because human beings also have the ability to modify, to some extent, their nature, corporate law (...) can organize small mediating institutions within large corporations in order to take ethical advantage of this groupingtendency. Within a corporate law taking seriously a mediating institution’s formulation of business communities, a virtue ethicsapproach can be integrated with a naturalist approach in a way that fosters ethical business behavior while mitigating the dangers of ingrouping tendencies. Blanchot often evoked the silence required for literary writing, a silence which he says must “be imposed” on a pre-existing and indistinct murmur of language. Likewise, he evokes this murmur itself as an originary ground of all speech, including literary speech. Less often recognized are the ways in which he also locates this murmur in the realm of public speech and everyday language, the rumor of speech spoken by no one and by everyone, a realm which he in turn links (...) with the exigencies of publication and publicity that bear on the literary work within modern societies marked by mass media and technically mediated communication. Blanchot himself thus points to an unexpected convergence, in these sonic images of impersonal murmuring flows of language, between literary language per se, and a language that is traditionally considered inauthentic, empty, superficial, a chattering nullity. This essay attempts to press on this border by showing Blanchot’s anxious, and probably futile, attempts to maintain the distinction he so profoundly and rigorously effaces. As literature is threatened by the indistinction of language from which it originates, it reveals an unexpected convergence with the leveling modes of language marked by mass media and by technicity in general. Bill Frederick’s work calls on business ethicists to consider religion as well as nature. Because there are naturally wired religious impulses in human beings and because of the fairness of including normative approaches meaningful for business people, Frederick suggests that the “R” in CSR4 should represent religion. This article takes up the theme in terms of the emerging field of naturalist theology, particularly (although embryonically) as stated by theologian Paul Tillich. Doing so creates (a) connections between “God as Life” and (...) nature and (b) linkages of the notions of symbol, culture, and transcendence. In addition to avoiding the socalled “naturalistic fallacy,” this integration can foster ethical business behavior. (shrink)

Advaitins emphasize that dreams spring from waking experiences, But are also imaginative reconstructions of them. Both waking and dream seduce us into thinking appearances are real, But both ultimately only point to the non-Dual reality, Brahman.

Just as Michael Porter's five forces provided a practical analytical tool for describing the forces that shape competitive strategy, so business ethicists ought to provide business leaders with a workable framework for understanding the sources of ethical obligations. The forces that shape competitive strategy vary according to time and industry, but are anchored in an ultimate criteria of profitability. Similarily, ethics can use a set of analytical categories that identify the relevant forces to business ethics on the basis of relationality.This (...) paper first argues that relationality based on naturalism is the primary, plausible value for ethics. Second, it adapts a tripartite dialectic from scholars William Frederick and Michael Novak to describe the relational categories with which business must contend. Third, it uses these forces in a way similar to Porter's competitive forces to offer an analytical language familiar to managers in order to characterize business ethics. (shrink)

In this response to Paul Lawrence’s Ruffin Lecture, I assess the benefits of integrating biology into business ethics including the way in which biology counteracts conventional economic descriptions of human nature. Section II looks at the dangers of the project and offers the notion of Multilevel Selection Theory as a way to address the notion of how one balances various biological drives. Section III concludes by suggesting that in order to optimally integrate biology, one should attend to contractual notions (the (...) deal) as well as a Sisyphean quest to engage in the task of integration. In doing so, we should also remember to draw upon the dolphin in each of us, that part that takes pleasure in doing moral acts. (shrink)

Utilizando como metodologia a Análise de Discurso, nos moldes propostos por Eni Orlandi (1999) e Kleber Mendonça (2007), analisamos reportagens, veiculadas entre 2010 e 2015, sobre as remoções no Morro da Providência. A construção discursiva do consenso sobre o projeto neoliberal de cidade que prometia transformar o Rio de Janeiro em cidade global, silenciou e ou normalizou o agravamento de problemas sociais, (...) como a remoção de moradores pobres e de maioria negra. Os discursos do Porto Maravilha se entrelaçaram aos dos megaeventos esportivos internacionais, visto que a legitimação dessa grande intervenção urbana se apoiou, em grande medida, na preparação da cidade para os Jogos Olímpicos de 2016. This book makes available for the first time in English—and for the first time in its entirety in any language—an important yet little-known interview on the topic of photography that Jacques Derrida granted in 1992 to the German theorist of photography Hubertus von Amelunxen and the German literary and media theorist Michael Wetzel. Their conversation addresses, among other things, questions of presence and its manufacture, the technicity of presentation, the volatility of the authorial subject, and the concept of memory. Derrida (...) offers a penetrating intervention with regard to the distinctive nature of photography vis-à-vis related technologies such as cinema, television, and video. FortContemplative Studies—meaning both standard “third-person” study of contemplative traditions in history and various cultures as well as actual “first-person” practice of contemplative exercises as part of coursework—is a new field in academia, and aspects have been controversial in some quarters, seen as not completely compatible with the rigorous “critical inquiry” of liberal arts study. While there are agendas within contemplative studies (CS) (...) that go beyond the traditional questions and issues of liberal education, I want to argue that CS has, for a number of reasons, a place right at the heart of such inquiry. CS can be approached from many disciplines, including psychology, medicine, and neuroscience, as well as literature and visual, fine, and performing arts, but here I will focus on its place in liberal arts generally, and in religious studies specifically.1Given my specific focus, I will skip defining some broad terms frequently used in and beyond CS (such as “religion,” “spirituality,” or “meditation”), but, in view of my topic, I do need to say a few words about what I mean by “contemplation” and “liberal arts.” “Contemplation” refers to ways of knowing and focusing attention, often but certainly not always part of a religious tradition. It includes a wide variety of practices: sitting or walking meditation, various other kinds of “mindfulness” practices, yogic postures, visualizations, silent prayer and group chanting, reflective self-inquiry, observing nature, and many others. “Liberal arts” or “liberal education” has many qualities and purposes, but the ones most relevant here include (1) reflective self-awareness, recognizing and critiquing one’s beliefs and assumptions; (2) respectful and empathetic understanding of others (what I call “mental migration” into other worldviews); (3) understanding that humans are socially and culturally conditioned, existing in and shaped by historical contexts; and (4) learning about various ways of thinking or modes of inquiry.Contemplative studies clearly has the goals of enhancing both self-awareness and “mental migration” into other worldviews, and an expected outcome would be ongoing critical reflection on such learning. CS should and does value the analytic study of contemplative states and traditions: scientifically, historically, culturally, and personally. While few would disagree that scientific inquiry, historical study, and knowledge of sociocultural context are significant when learning about contemplative traditions, [End Page 23] there is more dispute about the value of actual “first-person” contemplative practice, both for scholars and for students in academic courses, either during or outside class. Some of my fellow essayists in this volume and many others have argued eloquently that firsthand personal experience is an important way of illumining these traditions as well as alternative ways of knowing and valuing more generally.I will begin by offering a series of connected reasons why the latter view should resonate for a liberal arts teacher, then raise some issues that focus on the practice of contemplative teaching in the classroom.1. There are a variety of ways of knowing oneself or consciousness and the world, and it is important to investigate these various ways, to better understand human existence. In fact, recognizing that there are different kinds of knowing increases one’s capacity for critical analysis.2. Contemplative reflection is one of the ways people come to know themselves and the world, and come to understand the nature of contemplative practice itself.3. Contemplative inquiry has been important to many people in a large number of cultures, so it should be understood through both external study and direct experience, to gain a more accurate (and “lived”) understanding of others’ worldviews and practices.4. Given this broad and long-standing interest, there are, naturally, diverse contemplative traditions and experiences. We should learn how this variety is understood and explained by practitioners (i.e., their personal significance) as well as by scientists (their observable characteristics). Both kinds of study facilitate “mental migration” into others’ worldviews.5. Those within contemplative traditions have a long history of critical analysis and argument about various introspective states, so we should learn about and attend to both the states and the arguments.6.
